Interview:
Hi Nalini!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Nalini’s NEW release Angels’ Blood.
BBB: What do you find the most challenging aspect of writing?
NS: Probably the first draft stage, when you’re starting from scratch. But at the same time, I also love that stage, because there’s so much freedom.
BBB: What is the most rewarding aspect of writing for you?
NS: Pretty much everything! I love the writing itself, hearing from readers who love a book, seeing my book on the shelves…the list goes on!
BBB: What inspired the creation of the Psy race?
NS: I’ve always been fascinated by psychic abilities. One day, I remember thinking: What if psychic powers weren’t simply a wonderful extension of the mind, the senses? What if they led to insanity of the worst kind? Then I simply sat down and wrote.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader
to the environment?
NS: Obviously, they lead to less consumption of paper, but it’s important to note that discarded readers/batteries need to be recycled or they’ll end up creating a negative impact.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
NS: At the moment, with so many different readers and formats, a lot of people aren’t comfortable with shelling out the cash for an expensive device that may soon be obsolete. So e-sales are still very low in comparison with other sales. If and when there is a universal format, I think that’s when things will take off.
BBB: How many books do you plan to write in the Psy/Changeling series?
NS: As many as it takes to tell the story. And there’s a lot of story left to tell!
BBB: Which race is the most fun to write about?
NS: I can’t compare - I enjoy writing all of them. The Psy are coldly logical, the changelings affectionate, possessive and sexy, the angels so powerful that they’re nowhere near human–they all take me on different journeys in terms of my writing.
BBB: Can you tell us what your next release (s) will be? And do you have stand alone titles forthcoming?
NS: My next release is Angels’ Blood (March 3rd), the first book of the Guild Hunter series. After that comes Branded by Fire
(July), part of the Psy/Changeling series. I’m currently focusing on these two series.
BBB: Hawke is such a dominant, sexy character. Will he ever get his HEA?
NS: He’s already pushing for his HEA, but certain factors need to be in place for his book to take place.
BBB: What is your all time favorite paranormal/urban fantasy book?
NS: I read voraciously, so I have difficulty with questions like these - I love so many writers, so many books. Some of my favorites are Anne Bishop, Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey (the latter two are more fantasy), Christine Feehan, Meljean Brook, Laurell K Hamilton, Ilona Andrews…the list goes on!
BBB: What do you like to do in between all the time you spend writing?
NS: I catch up on my reading, and I travel.
BBB: What did you do before you became a writer? Do you write full time?
NS: I write full time now, but before that, I taught English in Japan for three years. And before that, I practiced law in a commercial law firm.
BBB: There’s a trend in the romance genre to have the heroine thaw the heart of a cold, unfeeling man, but in your novels it’s often the woman who must learn how to feel. Was it difficult to tap into that mindset? Do you think it’s more challenging to write from the perspective of an emotionless man or an emotionless woman?
NS: No - each character is unique and I have to approach each from the perspective that works for that character. Male or female, it’s all about going to the heart of the individual character.
BBB: What is your favorite quote of all time?
NS: I really like the serenity prayer. On a more bookish note, I love this quote: “Many people hear voices when no-one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.” - Margaret Chittenden

I just finished Hostage to Pleasure and am definitely looking forward to the next Psy-Changeling book. I appreciate that you tie up each book’s primary story arc in that book instead of making them cliffhangers. (Hate hate hate cliffhangers.)

Add me to the list of having your books in the TBR. The concept sounded amazing and I can’t wait to get to them. Also, thanks for that great quote about writers. How true it is!

This is one of those books I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz about and really looking forward to.

I’ve been following your writing and your blog for some time now, and I have to say that you are one talented lady
I know you said that you were a lawyer, as well as an english teacher, but how did you decide that you were going to be a full-time writer? Did you have the general concept of the of the entire storyline for the series when you started to write “slave to sensation” or just the story for that individual book?
I’m very excited to read Angel’s Blood, and congratulations on the wonderful advanced reviews.
[Reply]
LOVE the writing quote. Isn’t that the truth?
I shamelessly got my best bud hooked on your books and she stayed up til 3am last night finishing your latest release off (which IS already in some bookstores).

I’m a huge fan of yours Nalini, I’ve been lucky enough to review your books for ParaNormal Romance, and you have become one of my all time favorite authors. Your worlds are so incredibly well written that you feel like you are there. I was lucky enough to be raised in the area that the Psy/Changeling series takes place and I love that feeling of it being home, yet slightly changed.
I do have a question, will you be branching into more wolves in the future, I know Hawke gets and book and I’m dying for it, but I wondered if you have many more plans for the wolves ahead or if you will focus mainly on the leopards?
Best wishes to both you and Rachel. Thank you, Nalini for many hours of reading enjoyment. Thank you, Rachel for providing us readers the opportunity to “meet” Nalini.
Hugs,
Steph

[Reply]
Hi Nalini,
I had one more question, though my other hasn’t seemed to have posted yet, hopefully I did it right!
As a devoted fan and avid reviewer of yours, I was wondering how many books a year you are planning for each series now? The Angel’s Blood books and the Psy Changelings world?
I’ve gone out and joined everything that I was not already a member of for you and Rachel, though alas, I was already on many of these and already own most of the books except Angel’s Blood, though if I don’t win, it’s on my list of books to buy on pay day tomorrow. I did just pick up Pawn, but I had to get a pdf version as I don’t have Kindle, I wasn’t able to participate at Amazon, sorry!
Take Care,
Steph
[Reply]
I liked the quote at the end, I’ve never heard it before. It makes me chuckle a little.
I don’t mean to be critical at all, but you said Anne McCaffrey is more fantasy, but she’s actually said herself that she doesn’t write fantasy, but science-fiction. She’s very specific about that and says that because she uses science to explain everything, not even her Dragonriders of Pern series is considered fantasy. I just figured I’d point it out. She’s one of my favorite authors, too, and I used to browse her website all the time.
People have begun recommending your work to me more, and I’m DYING for a copy of Angels’ Blood. Really looking forward to adding your books to my TBR shelf!

Dear Nalini,
A couple of months ago I emailed you introducing myself as a new fan who is in love with your Psy-Changeling series. Now here you are giving an interview. Small world. Laughs.
I can’t believe you read Mercedes Lackey and Anne McCaffrey. It’s the first time i see an author state this. I love Misty she is my 2nd fav author in the sci fi/fantasy genre. My first is Tamora Pierce who writes young adults female heroine books. I love Anne’s Pern series.
Ques: What series or books do you love by Mercedes lackey & Anne McCaffrey?
=0p
Thanks so much for being here. Great quote it made me laugh.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!! I apologize for my late appearance - my Internet connection keeps cutting out.
Fingers crossed it continues to work this time.
Qwill How do you decide whose story to write next?
It’s a very natural process for me. As I complete one book, I start to be pulled toward another character, begin
to hear their voice telling me their story. And it goes from there.
Linda AkOther than paranormal books, which authors and genres to you like to read?
I love fantasy - I mentioned Mercedes Lackey and Anne McCaffrey above, but also Andre Norton, Kristine Kathryn
Rusch and others.
And I enjoy thrillers/mystery - authors including Tess Gerritsen, John Sandford, Jonathan Kellerman.
Chris I’m so glad you’re enjoying the Psy/Changeling series!
Caridad Isn’t that quote so much fun?
[Reply]
Nicole What are your plans for the senient minds within the psy web? The childlike mind is so intriguing, how
did you come up with the idea?
My worlds tend to develop organically. The NetMind grew out of the story - it just seemed like a natural extension
of things. As for my plans…that you’ll have to wait and see
Margay - I hope you enjoy it!
Beet My off the wall question is what changeling ability would you most like to have for one day?
I think teleportation - I’d be able to visit all the places I want to but haven’t made it to yet (Peru, Rome,
India…just imagine!)
Eshani I know you said that you were a lawyer, as well as an english teacher, but how did you decide that you
were going to be a full-time writer? Did you have the general concept of the of the entire storyline for the
series when you started to write “slave to sensation” or just the story for that individual book?
I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but in terms of going full-time, it was a decision that had to be made with a
very clear mind. I had to be sure I could support myself on my writing. By the stage I decided to jump in and do
it, I had been published for four years and I felt I had a strong financial base.
With StS, I was focusing on that one book, but I always knew it had the potential to be a series. I started
writing Visions of Heat almost as soon as I finished Slave to Sensation.
[Reply]
Kimber Chin - thanks for introducing me to your friend!
Shelley Do you miss teaching or practicing law much?
I miss the occassional aspect, but to be honest, I adore writing - it’s my passion, so I’m very happy to be able
to do it full-time.
Christine : What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
I always say, write, just write. The best way to learn to write is to do it. Workshops/conferences are helpful,
but in the end, it’s about the words you put on the page. The more words you write, the more you learn.
Lisa W My question is do you listen to music when you write? If so what kind of music.
It depends on my mood, but I do often listen to it in the first draft stage. I tend to need silence once past that
stage. As to what - I have an eclectic playlist, with songs in English, Hindi and Japanese!
Alana I’d love to hear about writing two series in different worlds at once. Was it hard to switch to Angel’s
Blood when you have so much of the Psy/Shifter series left to tell?
I actually find it’s good to have a change - it keeps both my worlds fresh. By the time I’m finished writing in
one of them, I’m itching to return to the other!
[Reply]
Jackie BQ: Will the human alliance be playing a larger role in the future?
Yes, you’ll be seeing more of them and learning more about them in the upcoming books. (It’s funny, I had to stop and think for a moment as to which books were already out, as I’ve turned in two books that haven’t been released
yet!)
MarnieColetteIf you could choose an element from the world you created in your books to really exist in the
real world, what would it be?
I think the changelings’ pack structure - in terms of how they look after each other, is wonderful. It’d be nice
if all humans could care for each other that way.
Patricia I am especially intrigued by the powerful angels you have created. Would you discuss them more fully?
When I was writing them, I had to always keep in mind that they had lived hundreds, maybe thousands of years. That would change a being, especially a being of power.
Stephanie As a devoted fan and avid reviewer of yours, I was wondering how many books a year you are planning
for each series now? The Angel’s Blood books and the Psy Changelings world?
Currently, I’m writing two Psy/Changeling books a year, and one Guild Hunter. However, I also write novellas, so that schedule may shift slightly to accomodate those, but that’s the situation at the moment
Silverstein - I hadn’t heard that about Ms McCaffrey, so thanks for the heads-up. She’s really one of my most favorite writers. I hope you enjoy Angels’ Blood!

Hi Marina! What series or books do you love by Mercedes lackey & Anne McCaffrey?
My favorite series by Mercedes Lackey would have to be the Heralds of Valdemar. I cannot get enough! With Anne McCaffrey, it’s a toss up between the Pern series & the Tower and the Hive. Absolutel love both!
Thanks for the comment, Valorie

Hi! I just joined this community (user name Tasha) from a link in Nalini’s blog. Nalini - Your Psy-Changling series is wonderful! I love the dynamics within the different packs and how there is such a feeling of family and unity. My question is about Mercy’s character. She is such a warrior, being a sentinel… was tapping into her feminine side harder than your previous heroines?

And Rachel and I know each other from The Haunt! Hi Rachel, you are the best for hosting this event!). My question for you is… Out of all of your novellas, are there are any that are stand out fav’s or yours? Any, besides Angel’s Pawn which I’ve just purchased, that are paranormal?

Tasha My question is about Mercy’s character. She is such a warrior, being a sentinel… was tapping into her feminine side harder than your previous heroines?
Mercy is a complex character and yes, she did give me a run for my money *grin* But in the end, it was about staying true to her. She might fall in love, but she’s still a warrior, still a sentinel.
Stephanie: ut of all of your novellas, are there are any that are stand out fav’s or yours? Any, besides Angel’s Pawn which I’ve just purchased, that are paranormal?
I can’t choose a favorite
Both Stroke of Enticement (in The Magical Christmas Cat), and Beat of Temptation (in An Enchanted Season), are both paranormal.
Rachael: I was wondering where she learned Japanese (school, or a family member or etc.)? I think that would be a great skill to have!
I studied Japanese at high school, and at University. It still took me 6 months in Japan before I truly understood things! It’s the speed - normal speed (of any language) is often too fast for a non-native speaker. It takes a while to acclimatize.

Hi Nalini. Thanks so much for joining us.
While I really enjoy the Psy-Changeling series, I have been enormously intrigued by the new one, based primarily on the short synopsis you gave on the B&N forum this past summer.
If you have already answered this question, I apologize for the repetition, but here goes: what inspired you to put angels and vampires together?
Good grief, I can’t wait for this book…
[Reply]
I can wholeheartedly recommend Beast of Temptation and Stroke of Enticement to anyone, it’s fantastic! Nalini, you are terrific.
Thanks for answering our questions!
Steph

I love your psy series and can’t wait to read Angels’ Blood. I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and interview as well.
Do you find that your reading helps inspire you to write or does it keep you away from the keyboard?
[Reply]
Virginia My question would be, if you had to choose any immortal creature to be, what would it be? And where would you choose to spend your immortality?
I’m going to have to think about this! But my first thought is that being an angel would be good - I could fly, go anywhere I wanted to!
Carol what inspired you to put angels and vampires together?
It just grew naturally out of the world - I started writing and that’s the way things were
I hope you enjoy Angels’ Blood!
Stephanie - thanks for the recommendation!
Slynne Do you find that your reading helps inspire you to write or does it keep you away from the keyboard?
Reading helps me relax, which I think can only be good for the writing. Sometimes, it is a little tempting to play hooky with a great book, but I like having a “reward” book waiting for me to read after I complete a project.

I love the quote at the end of the interview. I’ve read all the books so far, my copy of Angel’s Blood is ordered and on its way. Although my TBR stack is enormous, your books go directly to the Read Right Now stack.

I really can’t wait to read this book. Speaking of psychic abilities, if you could have one, What would it be?

Hi Nalini, I must say that I will be reading more of your books but have just picked up and read Mine to Possess so far and it was great. The review for Angels’ Blood and Vamp hunters chasing down arc angels sounds like it will be another good one. I noticed on facebook that you were in the New Zealand network….my son was reading over my shoulder and is a big All Blacks fan and a big rugby fanatic and wanted me to ask if you ever got to go watch a game.
Thanks

Another Pys fan here, can’t wait for the new release. Nalini, will we be seeing more of Ashwani and Janvier in the GH series? Liked these two together, and Janvier reminded me a bit of Lucas.
Friended Bitten and Nalini on Facebook, though different email there (pamreads@mail.com) and posted on Nalini’s Wall.

I kinda got stucked on the you having an ARC of Magic Strikes.
This is me. JEALOOOOOUS.
Can’t wait to read that, as I can’t wait read Angels’ Blood. OMG, I love the cover. Who’s the designer??

This was an awesome interview. i think it is so interesting that you were in law. I have never read any of your books but the thought of psychic abilities driving you to insanity would be an awesome read.
[Reply]
Great interview! Can I just say how much I’m looking forward to Hawke’s book? Do you want to reveal anything about his book or heroine?? Can’t wait for Branded by Fire - I’m very excited about a kick-ass heroine and how her story will unfold! Keep up the good work!

Hi Nalini. Great interview. Angel’s Blood sounds awesome. I can’t wait to read it. I am looking forward to Branded By Fire too.

What a great interview! I loved your favorite quote at the end, Nalini. It’s not only true, but it made me laugh because of how true it is. I have only recently been introduced to your Psy/Changeling series, but I already love them and can’t wait to catch up on all the books I missed the first time. Should I try and start with the first and work my way through them chronologically, or does it matter?
[Reply]
Nalini, we meet again. As I’ve told you before I’m looking forward to reading your Psi-Changeling series. Gouls and boys, take a look at the awards and kudos Nalini has for this series. Impressive.
Nalini’s already my friend in MySpace. I’ve done all the other stuff I usually do. *sigh*
The piles of books surrounding my coffin are getting high but I still have room for more!
Bites! D

I really liked your interview. I had previously not discovered you.
I just copied all your books for TBR and I ordered An Enchanted Season to whet my appetite. I did #1, #2, and #6.

Lexee - I read across the board. As for writing - romance always has a role to play in my work
Pam - yes, I have plans for those two!!
Wendy - *grin* Isn’t the cover fantastic? I would give you the designer’s name but my copy of the cover is in another country as I’m traveling at the moment!
Val - hope you try my books.
KEL - my lips are zipped on the details of Hawke’s book, but it’ll be an explosive book.
Crystal - hope you enjoy!
Karin - each book stands on its own, but the backstory does grow from book to book, so you’ll probably get more out of the series overall if you read in order.
Draculissa and Albert - hope you enjoy!
Natasha - I’m so glad to hear you’re liking my Psy books!
[Reply]
Thank you for the great books! I truly enjoy the Psy-Changeling series and am anxiously looking forward to future stories and your new Guild Hunter series.
How do you come up with the names and personalities for your characters; which usually comes first the name and you build a character around it or the character and then a name to fit them.
[Reply]
What a great intereview! Thank you!
Nalini - your characters are often on very emotional journeys (which I love). Do you ever feel like you’ve put yourself through the wringer after writing a scene? Is there one scene that was incredibly hard to write from an emotional POV?
Thank you and all the best on the release of Angels’ Blood!
[Reply]
Glad to hear we’ll be seeing more of Janvier and Ashwani, I was hoping.
For anyone new to the Psy series, this is one series I recommend reading in order. You’ll be satisifed with the romance aspects as standalones, but appreciate the series plotline so much more if you read from the beginning on.

[...] Nalini Singh’s Angels’ Blood at Bitten by Books Contest ends March [...]
Dear Nalini,
Favorite books my Misty (Mercedes Lackey) and Anne McCaffrey are; The Heralds of Valdemar series ALL OF THEM the Gryphon series and pre-Valdemar too. I am collecting them all (20+) and will re-read them in the future.
Recently read her newest book in that series “Foundations”. I loved it and am thrilled that its the first in a new series set in Valdemar. I’ve been waiting years for a new book from her. Grins.
The Dragonrider’s of Pern series is my #1 for Anne McCaffrey. I also love her son’s additions into that series. My 2nd and 3rd fav series from her is Powers/Petaybee and Acorna’s Adventures.
I also see your a fan of Andre Norton. Cool. I love her too. I try to read as many books by her as I can. My fav series be her is the Halfblood Chronicles written with Misty.
2nd Ques: What is your fav or loved series by Andre Norton?
[Reply]
Shari - sometimes the character and the name come together, while at other times, I spend literally HOURS trying to find the right name so that the character will be happy.
Orannia - oh yeah! I’ve been known to cry over a scene. I did that recently with BLAZE OF MEMORY - but I figure if I’m crying then it’s a good scene.
Pam P - hiya
Marina - you named it. The Halfblood Chronicles! I also loved Foundation. I can’t wait for more!
[Reply]
sorry to pop in late but when i saw you had a new release I HAD to be here!!!!
[Reply]
Thanks for the answer, Nalini. I love the Psy/Changeling world, and I’m looking forward to seeing your new one.
