Road Trip of the Living Dead Virtual Launch Party

Posted under Contests, Site News by Site Hostess on Tuesday 24 February 2009 at 9:00 am
*****

Wow. A year has gone by and what do I have to show for it? A new book that’s what! Road Trip of the Living Dead is officially out today!!!!! You know what that means, more zombie bitches, dirty sex and madcap hilarity. This is the part where you stop and applaud rather than cock your head and sigh.

Alright. You’ve got me. I’m definitely cheap and delusional enough to accept the sigh as a sign of your undying love and faithfulness…or not.

It’s been a year of big highs and some smaller highs–no real lows, I’m happy to say–but some pretty embarrassing moments. So since I have no shame (and have a weird idea of what constitutes launch party entertainment), I thought I’d take some time before we get to our first scavenger hunt (did I not mention, there’ll be three!) to share my top ten moments of the past year (not all of them are book related, or pleasant, but not everything in life is either). Shall we share?

My Year Between Books, in Sentence Fragments…

10. Bookstore staff announcing over the intercom, the author of Happy Hour of the DEAF would be signing books and answering questions. Followed by the inevitable woosh of air as people looked away in unison.

9. My first reading and signing with Caitlin Kittredge! I’ll be damned if it wasn’t well attended and we sold out. Plus! There was a brain jello shooter!

8. Signing the Powell’s author wall! That I did this with my fellow Team Seattle peeps made it all the more special.

7. The Great Brain Cake Debacle. This is a really drawn out story that if you’re prepared for my pottymouthed frustration, is detailed here, along with the time the bookseller told me that I was wasting my time asking her to stock my book because she only stocked bestsellers. That was fun.

6. Meeting great friends at various conferences and conventions. Michelle, Jaye, Dakota, Renee, Leah, Mario, Heather. Too many to even recount here.

5. My first foreign rights sale! Italy for the win! Grazie!

4. My panel at Seattle Crypticon was woefully unattended. As in…nobody came. No one. Well that’s not true. My wife Caroline took pictures of me and laughed.

3. Belizian jungle terror! One of the best vacations ever! Read about it here.

2. The publication of my first book,Happy Hour of the Damned! So exciting.

1. The publication of my second book, Road Trip of the Living Dead!!! Oddly, even more exciting. You think it would feel old hat, but no. Same old insecurity and fear and thrill of not knowing and ultimately hope. Hope that people like it and buy it and that it does well enough that I don’t have to get a day job.

Good times, people.

You know what else is good? Free shiz! So today I’m gonna be hangin’ out and giving away three sets of signed Amanda books to the winners of three scavenger hunts. Just read the question and either follow the link to figure out the answer or google your way to the conclusion. You’ll soon figure out that you’re on a tour of some of my favorite things and people. Some are inspirations (albeit weird ones) and some just crack me up. Leave your answers in a comment, along with any questions you have. I’ll draw the winner and announce the next contest at noon PST today.

Let’s get started…

Thierry Mugler is the name on all of the most fashionable vampire’s blood-stained lips.

You cannot throw a real trailer-trash party without a jello mold. I am particularly fond of the Nascar logo mold myself.

And the drag queen, Divine, was the inspiration for Ursula the sea witch.

Doesn’t everyone just know these things? ;)

While I’d love to participate, since I have a beautiful set of Amanda’s books sitting on my shelf (okay-I lie-amazon has yet to deliver Road Trip-but its on its way. I swear it is!), I’ll just sit here and laugh at the trailer trash party. I love it! How awesome!!! :)

Mark, I hope the questions get more difficult as the day wears on…I am off work with neck strain and I am bored to tears.

1.) Thierry Mugler, except I would think that at least some vampires have better fashion sense.

2.) Jello mold, although why anyone would want to eat moldy jello is beyond me, plus it moves which makes it alive in my book. I’d much rather see a pair of bib overalls on a jello-bellied man.

    3. ) Divine is, well, devine! And campy as hell.

The staple to any Trailer Trash Party is people to bring the food, and you can’t have a memorable party without “Bubba”.

Harris “Divine” Milstead was the inspiration for Ursula.

Thierry Mugler is for every fashionable vamp.

Although I am a Gucci fan myself. And Angel in leather pants.

    2. What is a staple of the Trailer Trash Party?
    Jell-O. I hate Jell-O, but I must admit that I would eat a brain shaped jell-o shot.

3.What famous “actress” was the inspiration for Ursula the Sea Witch in the Disney classic, The Little Mermaid?

I will go against conventional wisdom and say that Divine is the fashion designer that all the fashionable vampires should be wearing.
(I live by Capital Hill, and a lot of the local undead are into cross dressing).

Also, Thierry Mugler should be a staple of the Trailer Trash Party, because that would be FABULOUS!

Finally, Jell-o-mold was the inspiration for Ursula the Sea Witch in the Disney classic, The Little Mermaid. She jiggles and wiggles (and not in a good way), so why not?

You guys are a riot! Well maybe that’s an overstatement, but I’m sure if I got you liquored up we could really tear this mother up!

Draculissa - Hells YEAH I’ve seen his movies. I can recite the lines like a midnight showing of Rocky. “For a quarter I will!”

Debi - We loves us some Divine!

Nancy - Thanks for taking time out of your busy being-fabulous schedule!

Carmen - OMFG, we totally should. I’ll roll out of bed hair all effed up, grab a cigarette and some Old E and we’ll be ready to go!

    1) Thierry Mugler - Quite frankly I am not sure even a Vamp would wear that but I will point out his fragrance Alien is hot.

    2) Jello Mold (that jiggles)

    3) Divine with a touch of Joan Collins I believe.

Patiently waiting to spread the word. Dennis Squalor and the Electric Church

And the suggestive dinner could be a mixture of the MacaWeenie & Cheese (for those of the trailer trash persuasion)and a lovely penis and boob pasta with a nice ragu

An External catheter after a while Mark will even smell like a zombie, but just think of all the extra time Mark can spend with the readers.

Pasta Boobs for a suggestive diner, at least I don’t think he would miss the point.

Brother Ajax wants us to join him.

    1. Stadium Pal Catheter (which would make a good rap name)

2.Brother Ajax would be happy to offer you salvation by putting your brain in an immortal cyborg body. However, with thousands of people joining the Church each day, he may not be able to answer your questions immediately. If you are having problems reaching a Church representative, please check back later.

    3. Boob Pasta, but only if you serve it with Human Breast Milk Cheese. Sure, that’s mixing Italian Pasta with French Cheese, but sometimes that’s how you have to roll.

After reading how booksignings go (bestsellers only? really?) I’d say you should skip the catheter and go with the “jaunty rope belt,” handy for manslaughter by strangulation (it would be an accident, of course) or auto-erotic asphyxiation, as needed.

    1. Stadium Pal Catheter - Words you just dont hear enough.

    2. Dennis Squalor with Brother Ajax should you ever get to talk to him…

    3. Penis & Boob pasta - with a nice cream sauce made with the human breast milk cheese. With a sweet lollipop from page 2 for dessert. You know what I am talking about, just making it dificult for anyone too underage to see.

Alright folks!!! It’s 8 and I’m nearly done with the opening of Fashion Disaster, the Amanda/Nina crossover original that starts tonight on my blog..

    http://www.markhenry.us/blog

…and continues tomorrow at Dakota Cassidy’s place, but since it’s 8 we need to wrap this party up! Thanks to everybody for playing and supporting the book, I hope you’ll pick up a copy of Road Trip as soon as you can.

    Now, for the winners (plural!)…

Kelly Barnes takes the 3rd scavenger hunt!

    And

Carmen R is one lucky random commenter (I’ve got a signed Road Trip for you too)!

I believe y’all will settle up with Rachel and she’ll get me your addresses. Thanks again y’all!

I got in on this to late to play, but I sure did have fun with the hunt anyway. It was a great way to pass the time while sitting in a hospital bed being bored.
