Interview:
Hi Stacey!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Stacey’s latest release You Are So Undead To Me.
BBB: What do you find the most challenging aspect of writing?
SJ: Letting go. I always find something I want to change. It’s so hard to just send those words out there into the world and know I’m done and there are no more corrections to be made.
BBB: What is the most rewarding aspect of writing for you?
SJ: That I made something. It’s like knitting a sweater except, instead of keeping someone warm, I provide them with entertainment. It’s almost as good. Better if you live in a warm climate where you wouldn’t use a sweater anyway.
BBB: What or who was your muse that got you started writing?
SJ: I’ve written since I knew how to make my letters. Really, five or six years old. I just loved books, all books, and wanted to make things for people to read.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle or Sony Digital Book Reader
to the environment?
SJ: Obvious, right? Decrease of paper waste. But then, we have to hope that Kindle and Sony Digital Book Reader
don’t keep updating their technology so that our present readers become obsolete and everyone dumps their 2009 reader in the landfill in a few years. I have an old iPod
that is as big as my hand and weighs at least a pound. It holds one third as many songs as my 14 year old’s new iPod
that is not much bigger than my pinkie finger, but I won’t throw it away. It still works and meets my music needs, so I feel obligated to use it. You know? It’s carbon footprint guilt.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
SJ: I have no idea. I try not to think about things that have numbers involved. Also, long term consequences make me gassy. No, not really, I never get gas, I’m a southern woman but…I don’t know. It’s hard to say how things will go down. I love ebooks, but I also NEED print books. I can’t take electronics into the bath.
BBB: Okay all of us here at BBB want to know how the new baby is doing!
SJ: He is a preshush little smushy cheeked piece of fabulous, of course! But he hasn’t slept through the night–or more than four hours at a stretch–since we brought him home from the hospital ten weeks ago. I’m running on caffeine and adrenaline at this point. Thank goodness Santa brought me lots of chocolate and a Wii fit to keep my endorphins pumping.
BBB: Rumor has it that you write under several pen names, is that true? What have you published under those other names?
SJ: I’ve published fairly graphic adult romance and slightly less graphic historical urban fantasy romance under two other pen names, neither of which pens things appropriate for the Young Adult audience. That’s why I keep my YA separate from my other writing. Not to be condescending to my teen readers, but I did a lot of soul searching and I decided this was the best way to handle my very different work. My fourteen year old would be freaked to read my other stuff right now. In five years, she might feel differently, but for now the other stuff isn’t appropriate for her. That’s my decision as a mom and as a writer.
BBB: Can you tell us what your next release (s) will be? And do you have stand alone titles forthcoming?
SJ: I’ve got “Undead Much” coming in early 2010 from Razorbill. It’s the sequel to You Are So Undead To Me and is even scarier and romancier than the first book. I’m so excited to see what readers think about it! Then, I’ve got an untitled stand alone book releasing with Flux, also in early 2010. That book has a zombie as a heroine. She goes to zombie school, has to eat brains in the cafeteria, solves a murder her first week at school–lots of fun stuff. It’s been a blast to write.
BBB: Word on the street says you have a theatre background, is that true and if so what is your most memorable or favorite role that you have ever played?
SJ: It is true. I graduated with honors from Ithaca College with a B.F.A. in Acting. Probably my favorite role was Rita in “Prelude to a Kiss” at Santa Clarita Rep. It was such a fun script and so sweet. I wasn’t a big fan of the movie, but the stage version is one of the most wonderfully romantic things I’ve ever read.
BBB: Would you ever consider returning to the stage and is there a dream part that you have always wanted to play?
SJ: I don’t know if I’ll ever make it back to the stage. I’m so busy and theater takes a lot of time, especially at night when I like to be sleeping now that I have young children. But I do miss it (though I don’t miss eating Ramen noodles every day because I can’t afford anything else, lol). As far as a dream role, I’d love to play the lead in “How I learned to Drive” by Paula Vogel. It’s a funny, moving, disturbing, Pulitzer Prize winning play. Challenging and meaningful stuff.
BBB: What led to your interest in zombies?
SJ: They have always creeped me out, but also given me the giggles, ever since I was tiny and caught part of Night of the Living Dead on television. When I decided I wanted to write something funny, scary, and romantic, I knew zombies had to be involved.
BBB: How do you keep track of your characters and world building?
SJ: When I’m building a world it becomes so real in my mind that I usually don’t need a ton of notes. I just live there while I’m writing that book. That said, I do read and reread my first draft several times before I send it to my editor, just to make sure I’ve sewn up all the holes.
BBB: What is your favorite paranormal fiction book of all time?
SJ: Ugh! I only get to choose one. Geez…I guess the early Anita Blake novels by Laurel K. Hamilton. It was the first urban fantasy I ever read and hooked me on the genre immediately.
BBB: What do you like to do in between all the time you spend writing?
SJ: I love to work out and drink red wine. Not at the same time, of course. (Both are good for the heart, however, so it might not be a bad idea if someone wanted to give it a try.) I also love traveling with my husband and my kids, watching 30Rock reruns on Netflix, photographing my family, and scrapbooking–badly. (I am the world’s worst scrapbooker but I am weirdly addicted to it all the same. Stickers..ooo..so sticky they are.)
BBB: What did you do before you became a writer? Do you write full time?
SJ: I was an actor, then a full time mom. Now I write full time and mom full time…at the same time.
BBB: How do you find the time to write with four children?
SJ: Um…blergh…ugh…I don’t know. I just make it happen somehow. This interview is being typed frantically in the fifteen minutes before I have to go make supper and my four year old has already asked me ten times how much longer it is until he gets to eat pizza and the baby is crying because he likes Mama to hold him and walk him around the house instead of Dad. (Today anyway. Yesterday Dad was the favorite. He is so playing us in his conniving infant fashion!).
BBB: Do you have any pearls of wisdom you would like to share with our readers here today?
SJ: Don’t put off until tomorrow what you could do today…unless it is cleaning the toilet.
Thanks BBB! You rock, hope to be back soon!!

Stacey - Do you happen to knit? (Based on your sweater comment near the beginning of the interview…)
[Reply]
I always wonder what makes an author chose to write for adults and YA, rather than one or the other. Why did you chose to? Also, besides the obvious (i.e. sex) what are the main differences between the two? How do you decide which story idea is going to be for which audience? I ask this because I have ideas that could go either way (adult or YA) and would like some ideas on how to sort them out!

Hi Stacey,
I think it’s wonderful that you can write and have such a great family. It must get crazy sometimes but I’m sure lots of fun as well.
I love that you write about zombies you don’t see many zombie stories.

I just read your book and absolutely loved it. (will post review today) I adored Megan and the world you created for her, maybe because of the buffy similarities(a show that I still love today). Where did you get your insipiration for Megan’s kick butt attitude
and how many books do you plan for the series?
Thank you

Hey Chris!
Yes I do knit. I used to have a bit of a problem. When I did regional theater I would knit backstage every night. It’s as addictive as scrapbooking, lol.

Hey Margay,
Great questions!
I decided to separate my YA and adult work mostly because of the sexy-time factor, but also because of the tone. My older work tends to be much darker and heavier in tone, especially my adult Urban Fantasy. When I write YA, I get to use a lighter tone and I really enjoy that. I’m a goofy dork in real life and my YA voice often feels a lot more authentic than my deep and dark adult voice. You know?
Stacey
[Reply]
Hey Cindi and Lisa!
Cindi-yes, I’m excited about the new President. I’m wearing a t-shirt with Obama riding a unicorn on it right now.
Thanks Lisa :). I try my best to juggle writing and family. I do love them both.
Stacey
[Reply]
Nancy!
Yeay, I’m so glad you liked the book!
I have to confess I’d never watched Buffy until after my book was finished. I’d caught a few episodes and thought they were lame so I stayed away. But then I started watching the series from the beginning and became completely hooked! Buffy and Spike forever, that’s all I”m saying.
I probably drew most of my inspiration from the adult UF I’ve read. I love strong heroines, but I also love a character who can laugh at herself. With Megan, I tried to incorporate both.
So far, there are two books completed in the series (”Undead Much”, book two will be out in early 2010.), but I’ve got the story plotted through at least four books. (It’s going to get very creepy. Much darker than book one.) I hope I get to write all of them. We’ll see!
Stacey

Wow! Thank you so much for coming! I know kids are time demanding little….. angels. Lol, so its great for you to pop in and out! I tell mine their horns hold up their halos! Lol. My 13 year old is always after me to find her some paranormal books, and this looks absolutely wonderful! I see that it isn’t offered for Kindle yet. Will it be? And do you ask your 14 year old to preread your YA for her oppinion, since she is in that age group?
[Reply]
Hey Lindsay,
Thanks
I’ve actually written several plays. I wrote plays before I wrote books. I had a one woman show produced and wrote a couple full length angsty things that were–thankfully–never produced, lol.
But books are my first love.
Stacey
[Reply]
Hey Nicole,
Demanding is right. I just got back from running my four year old to school and having a mini mommy melt down because there was a kid in his class with bright red cheeks, glassy eyes, and a croup cough. Ergh! Why must parents bring sick kids to school? I have a tiny baby who will catch his brother’s germs and get sick! So I asked for my son to go to the other class today. Where the kids were not sick. Grr…
But yes, my 14 year old read the book and gave me her four cents before I turned in my final edit. She doesn’t read paranormal or romance (she’s a horse girl), but she liked it and said “it was actually funny” in a very surprised tone. I guess that means I’m not funny in real life.
Must be all the nagging

Welcome, Stacey.
So, what are the other names you have written under? I promise not to tell any of my students.

Hi Stacey!
Welcome to BBB! My questions. 1)why did your muse pick the paranormal genre?
2) if you could be any paranormal creature, what would it be and where would you reside for your time as that creature?
And Kudos to you for being able to write with 4 kids! I can only imagine!
[Reply]
Hey Carol
I won’t post that answer on the blog, but you can email me at stacey.jay.ya at gmail.com and I’ll send the answer to you personally. It’s not a deep dark secret and I’m sure anyone really committed could figure it out, but I’m just trying not to make it too easy. As I said, that just feels right to me as a parent.
Stacey
[Reply]
Hey Virginia,
I’ve always been fascinated by the paranormal, so it was the natural choice of genres for me.
And what paranormal creature? Wow, that’s hard…hmmm…
I’d have to be something that could fly because flying would be cool. Maybe a winged unicorn? And just spend my time flying around, granting wishes, and occasionally jabbing people I don’t like with my horn? (Not enough to cause real damage, just to make them think twice about pissing off unicorns.)
Stacey
[Reply]
What do you do when you have writer’s block? How do you get your muse churning again?
[Reply]
Hi Valorie,
Usually I just push through and make myself get my butt in my chair. Once I get started, I find the words start to come. But if the writer’s block gets really bad I’ll wait until after dinner, have a glass of wine, and let myself fun write for half an hour–anything I want to write. That usually perks me up and gets me ready to get back to my real project the next day.
Thanks for the question!
Stacey
[Reply]
Hi Stacey! *waves*
I’m just popping by to say hello, really, since I’m lucky enough to know Stacey a little in the writerly world and even got a Sneak Peek at the second Megan book!
And Stacey is telling the absolute truth when she says it’s darker and more romancier than the first. You guys are NOT going to want to miss it. They’re both fantastic books!

Aww, thanks Stacia! I know YASUTM is just now coming out, but I can’t wait to get a few ARCs of “Undead Much” to give away. I’m dying to see if readers will think of it. I’m having so much fun getting it ready to go.

And I collect Undead Dolls (so scary and gross yet cute). I think they would probably look great as decorations for your coffin, lol.

Hello again, Stacey.
I feel that the paranormal is such a great genre for teens, giving the feelings of “otherness” a more literal spin with which to explore them. The idea seems to be catching on, given the number being published. I am all for it!
Do you have any favorite YA authors — those you feel somewhat influenced/inspired by, or just think are great?

Hey marnicollette,
I prefer silence, but don’t get a whole lot of it, lol. Right now the kids are playing Wii Olympics and screaming in the other room, but at least the baby is napping so I can sort of concentrate. I definitely can’t write to music, I get too distracted.
I do love to brainstorm while walking the track and listening to my iPod, however. I have a soundtrack I made for my WIP that I love listening to. I feel inspired every time I turn it on.

Hey again Carol!
I have so many favorites, I almost don’t know where to start. I love Richelle Mead, a fellow Razorbill-er who wrote the Vampire Academy series. I also love Lili Saintcrow’s new book, “Strange Angels”. It’s not out until spring but it’s fabulous. Very dark and moody and atmospheric.

Yep Donna,
That’s my problem. I’m just waiting for my ipod to die so I have an excuse to get a new shiny one, lol.
And I’m not sure what drew me to the paranormal. I’ve just always been drawn to everything Halloween. It’s been my favorite holiday since I was too little to write my name and it was always more than just the dressing up or candy. I love the eerie feel of the world that time of year and I love to try to capture that in my books.

[Reply]
Hey Willow,
Whew…the toughest lesson I think is…you have to let go and know you did the best you could at the time. I grow as a writer every year, honing my craft, learning new tricks I didn’t know before. So sometimes, I look back at something I wrote a year or two years ago and can only see the mistakes. That can be hard, but that’s where I was on my journey and I’ve gotta let that go and move on to the next thing and keep doing the very best job I can. That’s all I can do.
And advice for new writers? Read. A lot. And write every day. Simple advice, but it worked for me :).

Stacey! LOVE your book! I was wondering, when you’re building your world, do you outline all the rules first (at least in your head), or do you let your character take control and see how the world fit around her? I’ve noticed a lot of urban fantasies - or fantasies in general - seem to either feel distinctly one way or the other.
[Reply]
I know you don’t write to music (per above statement), but care to share some of your WIP soundtrack? I’m always looking for new tunes
Oh, and I know it’s totally inconsequential, but what’s your favorite Wii game? I’ve been meaning to get The Force Unleashed myself
Thanks for doing such a awesome interview, your books are so going on my wishlist
Eating brains in the cafeteria, lol

Hey, Stacey! Besides wondering how you keep enough synapses firing with an infant while writing (my answer: I didn’t, but wrote anyway!), I was wondering which of your characters — if popped into existence in the Real World — would hunt you down and hug you or hunt you down to smack you around?

I have Bitten by Books on my blogroll.

Hey E Kristin,
I’ve got to have the rules pretty much laid down before I start. At least the big rules. If I have that basic framework, the little touches come with the writing. But without a little structure, my characters and I flounder.

Hey Sarai!
I’ve got “Love Story” by Taylor Swift and that “Lovesick Romeo” song sung by the Indigo Girls on my current WIP soundtrack, along with a bunch of others…but I don’t want to give too much away. That project is still top secret ;).
And my favorite Wii game…hmm…a tie between Wii Fit and Raving Rabbits.

Hey Dawn,
Lol. Yep, I just keep writing despite the fact that my synapses are on new baby meltdown. Today, I’m feeling pretty sharp, however. I got 5 hours of straight sleep last night so my 2000 words came a lot easier today. (Shout out to my mom for watching the baby so I could write. Go mom!)
And which of my characters would hunt me down? Hmm…probably the one I kill off in “Undead Much”. Which one is it? I’m not telling :).

Hey Tez!
Nice to see you here! I read your livejournal often.
Only North American rights for now, but I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Hey Gayle!
Thanks :).
I actually don’t own a reader. I keep spending my money on kids and red wine before I get that much saved, lol. For now, I read ebooks on my computer in pdf form. I’ve always got my laptop plugged in by the bed, so it’s convenient.

Hey Candy,
Thanks again.
I’ve always written–poetry and plays and short stories–but it was only after my first son was born that I really buckled down and tried to get published. I was home with him and didn’t have many mommy friends at first and I was pretty lonely. Writing during his naps gave my mind something to keep it sharp and helped me feel less isolated. And luckily, it also led to me being able to make money from home while still being there for my family as it grew. I feel very, very lucky.

Hey Kimberly!
Hmmm…I totally still idolize Laurell K. Hamilton, even though she took the Anita series to a place I didn’t care to follow in the past few books. Still, her buildup to the Anita and Jean-Claude scene in the bathtub is the work of a master of paranormal romance, lol.
And I wish setting and sensory detail came a bit easier for me. Dialogue and action is second nature, but I really have to double check that I’ve set the scene and included the sights and sounds and smells of the moment I’m writing.

THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE!!!
But I’ve got to say good-bye now. I’ve got a ton to do this week and my babysitting Nana is about to turn into a pumpkin and head back to the retirement village.
But please, feel free to drop me an email or swing by my blog. I’d love to hear from you though I might not always have time for a response right away.
Can’t wait to find out who wins the contest :)!
Thanks Bitten by Books! Look forward to hanging out again soon.

An actor to a writer. With being a Mom a biggie.
How does writing feel to you after acting someone else words?

Hi Stacey
I just read your interview, ordered your book (You’re so Dead to Me) and can’t wait to read it.
Question: Do you ever have a problem making the dialogue believeable or flow between your characters?
