Author J.E. Taylor Interview and Contest
PLEASE NOTE: The J.E. Taylor contest is now closed. The winner will be chosen at a later date and contacted via email.
BBB: Can you please share with us how old you were when you wrote your first story?
J.E.T: I wrote my first story for my father when I was in sixth grade - entitled Tony the German Shepherd and I did the illustrations for it as well. My father still has that tucked away with the other special items he collected from me and my siblings over the years. The next story I wrote was in eighth grade called Goodbye Doesn’t Mean Forever and from that point on - writing became my release - my escape from life just as much as reading was.
BBB: Besides being a writer, what other types of jobs have you held?
J.E.T: I’ve been a waitress, a grocery store clerk, a telephone solicitor for Solar Energy panels, a hostess, a master-control operator (television), a film editor, a camera operator, a teleprompter operator, a news desk coordinator, a reporter, a producer, a director, an insurance call center representative, a collections agent, a commission processor, a new business processor, a marketing desk representative, a pampered chef, a business analyst and a project manager - oh and the most important one of all - a mom.
I’ve done a lot of colorful things in my career and only been let go from one job - which was my first. I was a waitress and got fired because I couldn’t scoop ice cream fast enough. Mind you - I was probably 4’6” at the time and couldn’t reach the ice cream unless I was balanced on my thighs with the majority of my upper body in the ice cream case and my legs sticking straight out. My boss said he’d give me a great recommendation - I worked hard - but that job just wasn’t cut out for me.
After college I worked at a local television station and took dirty words out of movies. I also had a gopher job for the news crew - if they needed to get somewhere quick - they’d grab me because I drove like a bat out of hell (I still drive fast but not as fast as I did then). The funniest fill in job I did there was when I was sent to get a sound bite from a woman who had been shot in the ass through her livingroom wall.
As a Pampered Chef - I proved you CAN start a fire on their stoneware. I torched chicken nuggets in a toaster oven. At least that was at MY home and not during a demo at someone else’s house.
It has been a long time since something that bizarre has come my way on the work front. I’m now a business analyst specializing in financial services - specifically the broker dealer realm and instituting process improvements for the business folks.
BBB: Please tell us more about Dark Reckoning and the storyline that drives it.
J.E.T: My main character - Steve Williams - is an FBI agent that’s planted at the university to find out who’s responsible for the disappearances and violent deaths surrounding the small town of Brooksfield, New Hampshire. He’s young enough to be a convincing college student but experienced enough as an undercover agent to do the leg work. The greatest challenge he faces is the acceptance of supernatural events - which for someone so black and white, the shades of gray are unnerving.
And his biggest shade of gray is Jennifer Curtis. A self acclaimed clairvoyant, she is a curve ball he didn’t see coming. From their first meeting he is enamored with her — drawn to an electrical current between them pulling him closer and closer- even though he suspects she is in some way connected to the mystery surrounding Mirror Lake.
“I loved DARK RECKONING - always had a soft spot for demon type horror/thrillers and this is fabulous. Just the right mix of terror and calm so I didn’t have a heart attack while reading but came close! Excellent read for anyone who loves horror and a good love story.” - Cat Connor author of killerbyte and terrorbyte
“J.E. Taylor has penned a tale of terror worthy of Lovecraft. The strong characters, edgy atmosphere and unflinching narrative hooked me from the first word and kept me riveted all the way through to DARK RECKONING’s horrifying conclusion - a solid piece of storytelling!” - Ty Drago, Editor of Allegory and author of PHOBOS
Let me preface this by saying that this isn’t my type of book, however it was a page turner. For those who like dark horror/ paranormal with scary scenes that run right along the sexy bedroom scenes this book is for you. - Romance Book Scene (4 heart review)
BBB: Do you classify Dark Reckoning as horror or urban fantasy or a combination of both?
J.E.T: I actually classify it as a paranormal thriller as opposed to a horror - but it definitely runs along the roots of horror.
BBB: Can you tell us more about your work with Allegory and what the organization does?
J.E.T: Allegory http://www.allegoryezine.com, is an online venue for Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror. It’s really a labor of love for all of us, including the editor - Ty Drago. As an assistant editor, my job along with the other assistant and associate editors is to vet the submissions and pass on the best of the best to Ty. He then weeds through our recommendations and chooses the final stories for the next e-zine edition. Ty balances the publication from a content basis between science fiction, fantasy and horror as well as interviews and some staff submissions. I’ve had the honor of helping him choose the entries before and I’ll tell you - sometimes that feels like an impossible feat when you have forty or more “best of the best” and have to narrow it down.
BBB: Do you prefer to write novels or short stories? Which do you find more satisfying.
J.E.T: I like writing novels better because you have the latitude to intertwine complex story lines together and really explore the depths of your characters that you can’t necessarily do in a short story. Although a successful short story is a feat in itself.
BBB: From what I understand there were some pretty violent acts committed in Dark Reckoning against the heroine that were very graphically detailed. Do you put a warning in your books to readers who might be sensitive to this or just leave it for them to find on their own? Do you feel books yours or others should have any kind of warning label so to speak?
J.E.T: I believe you’re referring to Survival Games - which absolutely is graphic and violent to the extreme. That book is categorized as an erotic thriller and distributed by eXcessica with a warning as to the content. It’s also only available to those that are eighteen and over. The weird thing is this book has gotten 4 star reviews despite the graphic content. One reviewer actually stated that Survival Games was the most graphic thriller she ever read. I have to admit - that comment got me a bit jazzed.
On my website - I do state that my books are not for the faint of heart and that is true of certain scenes in all my books, even the YA that I mentioned below. My short stories carry the same stigma as well. For instance, Grayson House that was printed by Allegory last September is one that has a pretty graphic description of violence and a definite creepy factor. Enough so that one of the father’s at my son’s jukido class couldn’t sleep for two days and kept having to check the locks on his doors and windows.
In Dark Reckoning there is a disturbing scene that my FBI agent witnesses - gang rape - and it’s almost entirely recounted from his point of view. There is no warning as to graphic or violent content on this book like there is on the erotic series.
Should there be? I don’t know. I’ve read some pretty graphic depictions of violence without a warning label and I guess from a horror perspective, I kind of expect that.
BBB: What would you like your readers to come away with after finishing one of your books?
J.E.T: I want my reader’s hearts to still be knocking at the walls of their chest when they close the book. I want my readers to realize they’ve been holding their breath through the last few pages and to slowly exhale as they stare at the cover. And I want my readers to want the next installment in my character’s lives.
If you’re talking insight here as opposed to visceral reactions - I guess my message is this:
Bad things happen, but a strong resolve can overcome almost any obstacle.
BBB: Can you share a few of your absolute favorite lines from your books with us?
J.E.T: From Dark Reckoning: “Next time you kiss me, you better make it last a hell of a lot longer than that.”
From Suvival Games: “Game on.” and “Dude you got issues.”
From Mind Games (which comes out in November) “Gives a whole new meaning to being inside me, doesn’t
it?”
From End Game (which comes out in February of 2011) “Smoldering.”
BBB: Are you a plotser or a panster? or a Planster (a combo of both - lol)
J.E.T: Actually - I’m a fly by my seat kind of girl - so I guess I fall into the combo category? I have a general idea - a couple characters in my head and I go from there.
BBB: Do you prefer writing Horror over Sci-Fi?
J.E.T: Yes, very much so. I don’t do well writing science fiction. I’m really more of an urban fantasy girl as opposed to sci-fi. My science is flawed.
Just ask my critique group. I do have a superhero fantasy that I’m in the process of editing that’s geared to a young adult audience - and like most of my writing - it has some nifty supernatural elements in it.
BBB: Who are your writing influences?
J.E.T: Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Sidney Sheldon
BBB: Do your children read your books?
J.E.T: Not the erotica - at least not till they’re 18, then they are free to read it.
My kids have read most of my short stories and my fifteen year old has a copy of Dark Reckoning. She watches Criminal Minds and CSI NY along with joining me to get my Supernatural fix. She’s into “horror” movies too, so I figure she can handle the subject matter.
BBB: Do you have any upcoming appearances? If so where can our readers find you?
J.E.T: I don’t have a personal appearance schedule at this time but when I do, I’ll put it up on the calendar page of my website http://www.jetaylor75.com. I’ve got a bit of a web presence too with facebook, myspace and goodreads pages. If folks you buy a paperback, they can contact me and I can send them a signed bookplate to stick on the inside of the cover.
As a closing note - in the interviews I conduct on my blog http://jetaylor75.blogspot.com - I ask my guests what I call “the quick ten.”
Can you tell me which quick ten question you’d most like me to answer?
How about one of my characters - what question for which character?
Do you have a question you’d like to see in the “quick ten” list?
Thank you again for coming by and chatting with me at my interview here on Bitten By Books.

The question for you Country or Rock and Roll?
- Definitely a Rock and Roll Girl - my hubby likes Country and for many years everytime I was in the car and he had the twangy stuff on - I’d get hostile.
The question for Jennifer Salty or Sweet?
Sweet tooth. She’s a sucker for chocolate covered anything.
I’m an animal person so maybe adding the question, Cat or Dog?
Cool - will add that to my aresenal. I’m a dog person - cats are beautiful creatures - but I’m allergic to them.
I’m also curious did you name Ty’s character in Survival Games after Ty Drago or was that a coincidence?
That, my friend, was an odd coincidence, one that I commented on when we first met - which is how I found out that Ty Drago’s first name is a nickname not his given name like it is for my character.
Thanks for taking the time to comment Rae!

Funny I so had the Drago part pegged as the nickname. Huh. Go figure!
And I completely understand about the whole country deal. My roommate back in college was a country fanatic. I could hang with a couple of songs but she listened to it all the time. She’s lucky we were such good friends otherwise her country collection would have had an “unfortunate accident”. As it is I think I’ve been traumatized for life!
Thanks again for being here!

Hello J.E.T.! You sound like a woman I would really want to get to know. I know that I will be picking up your first novel as soon as I go to Enid, Oklahoma. I will be calling up Hastings to make sure they have it or I will order it from them. They are all the time asking me how I hear about the new authors so quickly.
I don’t feel that you should have to put a warning lable on a book either. That is part of the fun of reading, to find out what makes everything tick.
I always let my girls watch horror flicks with me and they ate them up as much as I did. Granted they would ask questions about vamps, fairies, werewolves and the such but they wanted to learn. I’m all about learning!
On your quick ten “What’s been your most challenging hurdle on the road to publication?” I would want you to answer this one.
Steve Williams the FBI agent, why is there no grey in your world?, would be my question to him.
What do you sleep in, commando, nighty, nudie or what?
I did enjoy all of your quick ten questions.

Lisa - thanks for swinging by.
Most challenging hurdle - finding time to write and overcoming the rookie mistakes I made. As you said - it’s all about learning.
Steve’s response - it’s either black or white. There is no in the middle where justice is concerned. Either you did it or not. The why’s are for the psychiatrists to sort out, not for a field agent.
And as far as your edition to the quick ten - LOL. I’ll keep that in mind for my more risque interviews.
Thanks for swining in.

On your quick 10 questions, I’d like to know when did you know you wanted to take the plunge into the writing world? I’d also like to know if you have advice for aspiring writers?

[Reply]
Hi Krysten - when did I know I wanted to write? I got the notion that maybe this could be a career back when I was in middle school - that’s when the writing bug bit. It took close to thirty years before I decided to jump in with both feet and seriously pursue publication and for more than half that time I wasn’t writing fiction at all. At least I used the time to read everything I could get my hands on - from Stephen King to Jackie Collins to Tom Clancy.
Advice for aspiring writers - don’t make the same mistakes I made. You can read about them on earlier blogs of mine and over here at Randy Susan Meyer’s blog: http://www.randysusanmeyers.com/blog/?p=1430

Thank you for coming by and checking out my interview and blog. Zombies or demons - for me - that’s easy - Demons -they’re much more diabolical. Zombies are kind of boring. They lumber around and eat people who aren’t sensible enough to get away.
Steve’s response: Zombies don’t exist. They’re a figment of a creative mind, unless of course you’re talking about someone tripped out on drugs. Either way - they aren’t my thing so I guess it’s demon by default.
And as far as your question - I looove chocolate. For me though - I’d take dark chocolate over white chocolate any day except if it’s a Lendt white chocolate ball - that I’d walk a mile in the snow for.
And I hate the snow.

Quick ten: Coffee or tea? (Me: Coffee…but I drink more tea–I’m no de Sade, but doesn’t it sound just a little masochistic?)
Question for Jennifer: Salty or sweet? (Me: I love sweet…but no sugar in my coffee or tea.)

Coffee or Tea? Neither - never acquired the taste for it.
Jennifer is a sweets girl.
Ooh Leather or lace - interesting addition there. I’m thinking a little of both.
How do I pick my character’s names? I’ve really got no formula - the names just fit. I have the character’s traits in mind and the name is a natural progression. Kind of like naming your kids. I have names I adore and names not so much and names I find interesting and I try them out on my characters until it seems right.
Steve, Tracy and Bill were original names that graced the pages of Mirror Lake (former title of Dark Reckoning) but my female lead changed after I finished the book primarily because the Games series had the same name for the female lead and two Jessica’s just would be way too confusing.

Hi J.E.,
Good interview, thank you. I am going to have to go searching for these books now. They sound great.
I can’t think of ten at the moment but I do have three questions.
Do you generally set one large goal or many small ones?
What do you do to reward yourself when you reach you goals?
Do you keep track of random plot bunnies as they pop up or do you let them run free and grow until you need them?
[Reply]
Koren - thanks for swinging by and posing a really good question. One that I’ve never really analyzed. I guess I have a stretch goal - that brass ring one that’s in the form of a specific piece of realestate up here in York Maine. But as I type this, I realize that’s more motivational than an actual goal. I’ve set realistic goals and idealistic goals where my writing is concerned as well as some self imposed deadlines like I want to finish the backlog of submissions by X so I can then move onto Y.
Breathe and then focus on the next one.
I let my random plot bunnies run free and grow until I can focus on them. I like random plot bunnies - especially in abundance!

What inspired you to become a writer? I have been thinking about trying to write novels. I enjoy reading so much. I thought maybe I could write a book. What advise would you give me on how to begin? Please enter me in contest. I really want to read your book. Thanks again. Tore923@aol.com

Reading, listening to my grandfather tell stories about the depression, about he and my grandmother and the early days of strife, and reading some more. I’ve also got quite an imagination - almost Ally Mcbeal quality -equipped with the visuals and all, so writing just seemed like a natural form of expression for me.
Advice - just write. Get the story out and put duct tape over the mouth and wrists of the inner editor until it is done. Then you can go back and refine. I’d also suggest some fabulous writing resources - Donald Maas has some good books on how to write, as does Stephen King. I’d also suggest writing courses, online or at a local college. There’s also Nano writer month in November as well.
Good luck - it’s not easy to write an engaging story that carries the reader along - letting them experience what the main character experiences.
Thank you for swinging by!

Can you clarify what paranormal romance means to you? And then I’ll better be able to answer the question.
Dark Reckoning does have a romance thread intertwined in the thriller - so that’s why I’m asking the question here.

Wolves or Vamps is what I want to know, and why… except I’d have to add in shifter in general as a choise since other animals are pretty awesome:)
As far as warnings– I don’t know– it sounds like on the extreme story there are warnings and it’s for over 18. As far as your other books- I’m not sure it’s so much warnings as maybe the blurb on the back making it clear it’s dark, gritty if you will. Where do you start and stop with warnings? I read dark urban fantasy and horror a lot, and I just assume it’s going to have violence–hence the genre, you know?
My question is this- what has been the most emotionally difficult scene you’ve had to write?

Brenda -
Why am I partial to wolves / shapeshifters versus vampires.
While vampires are logically the more seductive of the two - who really wants to live forever and have to sustain themselves on drinking blood.
Wolves - I’ve always had a thing for wolves and when I was a kid I had a poster of a grey wolf on my wall above my bed. He was my protector, stoically watching over me as I slept. I think they are beautiful animals and that’s why I end up leaning that way.
The most emotionally difficult scene I’ve written is in the fourth book in the Steve Williams series. It’s also the scenario that actually gave me nightmares. I’m not sure if it will survive edits when I get back to that book - and you’ll notice I haven’t really elaborated on the scene itself and that’s because I’m not sure the book will go that way. Just think of a mother’s worst nightmare and times that by ten.
Thanks for the questions!

Can you tell me which quick ten question you’d most like me to answer?
I’d like to know more about the dirty words you took out of movies. Obviously there are offensive words, but not everyone might consider the same words ‘dirty’. Were you given a list or idea of what had to be removed?
What was the oddest (not a word you might consider dirty) that you had to remove?
How about one of my characters - what question for which character?
For Steve Williams: When undercover, do you feel that you have to let truly horrible things be perpetrated, so as not to be made?
Do you have a question you’d like to see in the “quick ten” list?
Longest ‘book relationship’? (author/character/series you’ve been reading for years) +40

Lillie -
The one I’d like you to answer: Horror or comedy?
As far as the dirty words - think George Carlin’s seven dirty words. I had a list - the top echleon was the absolute No-nos - the f-bomb - the “c” words and a few others.
The after eight pm list of allowable swears - shit and ass are the only ones I can remember falling into this arena - mind you this was close to tweny years ago too and the television was an indy not network - so a little more flexible - kind of like FX or TNT today.
Balls couldn’t be said until after 8pm too - that’s the oddest one.
Steve’s response - No. At least not to this point in my career and I hope to hell I don’t ever have to be in that position.
My undercover cases have been focused on catching the perps, first a serial rapist at Yale and now this viscious bastard in Brooksfield. It’s not like I’m an undercover DEA agent infultrating a drug ring. . .
Thanks Lillie - and that is certainly an interesting question to consider for my next interviewee.

Beach baby! I’d rather swim in a lake than the ocean - but I love - love the soothing sound of the water lapping the shore.
Steve’s response - Both. I own a house on a lake up in Brooksfield New Hampshire which is in the White Mountains but I also love the southern Maine shoreline.
Question 3 made me laugh and then scratch my head. I actually don’t know quite how to answer that. It’s like Original Star Wars or the Clone Wars? LOL - I’d end up siding on Star Wars just because of the compelling good versus evil theme as opposed to Star Trek which was more about the journey itself.

I joined the forum (for all you fledging writers out there - this is the best $40 a year you will spend toward making your dreams come true - http://www.bksp.org) - and he sent out a call for slush pile readers - I raised my hand. I was promoted to assistant editor from associate editor after the first issue I worked on. I guess I impressed Ty and our views on what is a good story are very similar. Although we are polar opposites in real life - in the physical sense - I’m short - oops - vertically challenged - and he’s as tall as I am short. But we are very like minded. We even both are business analysts in our day jobs - how weird is that?
Sweet question - Paper or digital - I toyed with this one as well especially with all the press lately.

Pam - Pepsi versus Coke is one near and dear to my heart. While I’ve never drank coffee in my life and tried tea when I was pregnant and didn’t like it - I was a Pepsi-holic in college. Between that and nicotine - I was a hyper dynamo. LOL - quit both since, but I always like the sweeter side - Pepsi.
As far as Stephen King books - The Stand is my favorite because that one actually made me look over my shoulder and stayed with me for a long time. Randall Flag is one bad ass antagonist. I liked how he weaved so many stories together and it seemed effortless. Which I know now it is anything but, so my appreciation of his craft has increased tenfold.
Thanks for the neat additions!

To add to the list how about top 10 best-seller or unknown back shelf find? classic silent film classics or cheesy b rated horror? comic books or anime? audiobooks or ebooks? 2012 mayan prophecy believer or ain’t gonna happen? kick ass name-taker or scream for help? sword wielding ninja or gun toting momma? Sorry, I could go on and on. I’ll stop now.

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required - depending on the position - certain degrees offer more incentive than others. Dovile - thanks for swinging by.
1 I don’t drink coffee or tea. I’m naturally energetic - so the introduction of caffeine in my system would probably make me bounce off the walls.
2. Jennifer’s response - the Pros are knowing what might be coming. The con is the same. If given enough advanced warning of a situation, then it falls into the pro column because the future can be altered by our actions. However, if the vision doesn’t give time for action - then it makes me feel helpless, and I hate that. Unfortunately, my visions land in the latter category and it’s frustrating to see such horrible things and know there isn’t a think I can do to stop it. I have been known to have flash backs too - and I’m not sure what triggers those. All I know is the visions I have relate to someone or something that will eventually intersect with my life in some way. They aren’t arbitrary. Hope this answers your question.
As far as the scenes I like to write - I like action sequences - the story climax or scene climax - those are my favorites to write because they flow fast and furious. The difficult ones sometimes are getting from point A to B - those are the ones that if I’m going to stall on - that’s where it falls. Those are also the parts of the books that I end up having to do extensive editing on to craft into a compelling read. It’s all about layering tension and the scenes with the least amount of tension are the hardest for me to write.
As far as the favorite book - is that of mine or another authors?
If I could take one thing with me to a uninhabited island - I’d have to say my husband. Life without him would be dull.

For the favorite book - if you’re talking mine - it has to be Hunting Season - which is the third book in the Steve Williams series and it brings together characters from both the Games series and the FBI series. I had a tremendous amount of fun with that book.
If you’re talking overall favorite book that I’ve read - that’s The Stand. And second to that is Executive Orders.

I like thrillers more than straight horror. Warnings, like in fanfic, are good. Rape is different than slasher fodder, for example. Yay Criminal Minds (I have Aori’s love of Morgan/Reid).

Thanks for swinging in. I agree on thriller versus straight horror as well. I want the tension ratcheted up with each page and not necessarily Jason jumping out of the shadows with a hatchet type reads.
Modern werewolf - much more complex these days.
I’m not a gum person - but if I have it - I like peppermint. Although the fruity flavor is an absolute turn on when kissing.
Considering I don’t have HBO - I can’t really answer that question. Twighlight (at least the book series) kind of pissed me off - especially the last installment. The build up was there - which was great - but the end fizzled out - I was expecting so much more. I’ve been told I NEED to see True Blood - so at some point I’ll check it out.
Have a great weekend!

JET, Do you have any new authors that you have read recently that you would recommend?
Cat Connor is a fairly new author and her books kick ass. Another one that isn’t necessarily new - but his book Patient Zero was a thrill ride from beginning to end. For young adults - Lisa McMahon, Heather Brewer and A.S. King write some killer stories as well. And I’m waiting on a urban fantasy to come out from my friend Allison Pang - I had the pleasure of reading that one while she was ironing it out. Great great writer.
Favorite meal? What I just had oh - about an hour ago - Filet minon and lobster. (We went to see Sunset Blvd at the Ogunquit Theater today).
Favorite vacation destination? Maine or the NH Lakes Region
Favorite music genre? Rock
E-book or printed book? Printed - but only because I haven’t invested in a kindle yet.
Favorite paranormal character? Right now nothing comes to mind - and my husband is building a campfire - so I’ll have to get back to you on this one. (The first thing that popped into my head is Sam Winchester - but he’s not necessarily “paranormal”.)
Favorite dessert? Marble cheesecake.
