Author Louise Delamore Interview and Contest
PLEASE NOTE: The Louise Delamore contest is now over. A winner will be chosen at a later date and contacted via email.
BBB: Can you please share with us how old you were when you wrote your
first story?
LD: I’m knee deep in boxes at the moment as we’re in the process of moving house. While I was packing one of the boxes in my study I came across an old file containing some stories I’d written as a kid. One was from when I was about seven. It was a weird mash-up of Little Orphan Annie & Cinderella, even back then every heroine had to have her hero
So I guess I’ve been writing, with greater or lesser discipline, for as long as I can remember. When I’m not writing, stories still play around in my head. This is my first book, and I’m so glad of the chance to share with readers this (and hopefully more in the future) of the stories that clutter my head.
BBB: Besides being a writer, what other types of jobs have you held?
LD: I’ve had a number of jobs, doing a wide range of things. Working in a men’s clothing store, in an air-conditioner manufacturing plant, and as a barista in a coffee shop. I’ve been a librarian, an editor for children’s books, a business analyst, and right now I work as a the commercial planning manager for a multi-national. The range of jobs has allowed me to meet different kinds of people, cultures, religions, weirdos (oddest question ever: while working in a men’s clothing store (all we sold was men’s clothes) was “do you sell clothes?” not even men’s clothes, which was a more common question than you would think, but just clothes). But every person is fertilizer for an author’s mind. The job were I met some of the most interesting people was also the one with the most exotic name, barista. It was actually a lot less exciting than it sounded - I made coffee
How about you? Strange questions you’ve been asked? Exotic/crazy/strange jobs you’ve had that were a lot more mundane than they sounded?
BBB: Please tell us more about the Human With a Twist and the storyline that drives it.
LD: Betrayal and a broken heart have made Zaralyn determined to avoid romance at all costs. One night she is grabbed by men with nasty things on their minds and dragged into in a dark alley. She’s rescued by Gideon; meeting this mysterious man challenges her resolution and her heart.
Gideon is attracted to Zaralyn from the moment he sees her. He wants the chance to get to know her better, but she clearly has issues with men. How can he prove he’s worth trusting when he has so much to hide?
Hide what you ask?… Well, Gideon isn’t what he seems. He is a human with a twist – one of those who for centuries have been misunderstood and labelled ‘Vampyre’. Can Zara trust him when she finds out he’s been hiding this strange truth? Basically Zaralyn is a woman struggling with trust, and Gideon is a living lie. A lie told not just to her, but the whole world. On top of everything else, a situation that starts out as simple attraction spirals out of control when it becomes clear their lives are in danger. How can they even consider falling in love when a killer is marking them for death?
BBB: How old is the oldest living ‘vampire’?
LD: Vampires in my world are a little different from those you’ll find in most paranormals. One day I was wondering about the genesis of the idea of vampires and came up with a world where vampirism is a disease. A very odd disease where a deficiency in their own blood is solved by drinking the blood of normal people. This odd problem meant that through history they kept themselves secret, supported by a society of willing donors. This kept them alive & safe from persecution, it also gave rise to the myths with which we are all familiar - the most obvious being that vampires are immortal.
So in answer to your question, in my world vampires aren’t immortal, but the do live long lives (about 150 years). It is easy to see how that sort of lifespan could be mistaken for immortality, especially in years gone by when people died a lot younger than they do now. I had fun turning myths into misconceptions ![]()
What about you, what are some of the myths that you’d like to see twisted/changed/ or turned on their heads?
BBB: How often does this gene pop up? Once every generation? Twice?
LD: It’s passed on through the mother’s line, and in the same way that colour blindness effects some children and not others, this will only be picked up by some children. It’s more prevalent in men but the gene is dominant enough that the vampire community is about 60/40.
BBB: Is the gene more likely to occur if two vampires have a child together?
LD: Yes, much more likely since both parents carry the gene. That’s one of the reasons the condition hasn’t died out. Because vampires tend to associate with each other, that’s also where they usually fall in love.
BBB: Do any of the regular donors have any medical problems like low iron?
LD: Sure, as any blood donation organisation organisation will tell you, you need to take care of yourself if you donate often, and everyone’s experience will be different. The first time I gave blood I hallucinated and passed out! In my story the difference are there too. For instance, a donor will only get a sexual high while helping a vampire if they are already attracted to the vampire. During the war Gideon has a buddy who helps in a purely platonic way, with Zara the experience is totally different!
BBB: What does the blood taste like to the vampires?
LD: Well, like blood. To which the instinctive response is eeeewwww - in fact that’s pretty much Zaralyn’s response. So I’ll add to 2 caveats…
1. As Gideon explains to Zara when she takes him up on, not just the blood, but why on earth he would even have thought of biting someone, “Because for us the urge to bite isn’t unnatural, it’s natural. It’s instinctive. It’s almost like you can smell it.” He paused a moment. “It’s like when you’re really hungry and you smell freshly baked bread. Your mouth craves it, you want to eat it. Even if no one ever told you the bread you smell is good to eat – you know it is – instinct tells you it’s good. When the craving is on me for blood, it’s the hungry persons craving for that fresh bread.
2. After the first moment it’s not just the blood he tastes, it’s the pleasure rushing through her body.
I tried to make Zaralyn’s response to the idea of someone biting someone and drinking their blood as normal as possible.
What about you, how would you respond if someone you knew said ‘actually I’m a vampire & bite people & drink blood - Oh & I have an explanation?
BBB: Are you a plotser or a panster? or a Planster (a combo of both - lol)
LD: Love the word “planster”. It sounds like some kind of superhero. Never fear the Planster is here!
I’m mostly a plotter. When I first started writing I didn’t know there was more than one way, which sounds ridiculous in hindsight but there you go. So when I first started writing I just went at it panster style - and never finished anything. A few years ago I found out about plotting and a whole new world of writing opened up for me. By that I mean I finished my first book
I’m still taken by Planster
If you were a superhero, what would you call yourself?
BBB: Are you planning on continuing the series? Or with the other vampire/human couples?
LD: Once I start a story all the other characters clamour for their own story. I have to control myself or I would have such a plethoa of romances in one book that it would be complete clutter to read. So yes, I have plans for other couples set in this world. I’ve just had a short story accepted about Lauren, a French émigré & vampire friend of Gideon’s. She is attracted to a man who reminds her of a fallen angel. When she has the chance to take a donation from him she takes it, hoping to use it as a chance to get to know him better. Except, he goes into the situation uninformed. When he gets a bite instead of the kiss he’s expecting chaos ensures. So watch out for ‘Redemption’s Kiss’ later this year I think.
BBB: Who are your writing influences?
LD: I can’t pin it down to one or two writers. My parents read to me long before I could read myself. I grew up on Oscar Wilde, JRR Tolkien’s Hobbit, Enid Blyton & fairy tales galore. Those wonderful stories captured my imagination and fed my creativity. When I was 14 I read my first Mills & Boon and was hooked. All those writers have influenced me, from Oscar Wilde’s evocative language, to Tolkien’s wonderful world, to M&B’s HEAs. That combination has led me to paranormal romances like a month to a flame.
BBB: If Gideon were younger and had 100 years left to live would Zara have thought twice about being with him?
LD: I think whenever there’s a big age gap people think twice, but we see May-December relationships all the time. When people get together love drives them not the the inevitability of one persons’ death. It’s one of the reasons I wanted my vampires to be mortal, because I think choosing to love & be with someone who will get old & die (possibly before you), is one of the things that makes humans amazing. Knowing your partner will live forever removes the blessing that every moment together is when you know one day you will part.
What about you, would you take a chance on someone who is likely to live a lot longer than you?
BBB: Do you have any upcoming appearances? If so where can our readers find you?
LD: No events like this one scheduled at present, but I can be found on my blog every week http://www.louisewrites.blogspot.com, and I’ll be doing a give away there in the next few weeks.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Bitten by Books for a great review & the opportunity to do this interview. I’d also like to invite you to ask questions or leave comments, I’ll be around on & off all day to answer questions

Actually today has been pretty mild out heat wise. Inside or outside it is pretty comfortable. Earlier in the afternoon it looked like it wanted to rain. Nice change of pace than the smoldering mugginess we’ve been having.

Hi Louise, It’s hot and humid with a chance of thunderstorms.
My boyfriend is 17 years older than I am. I don’t really worry about the age difference because I know several people who married someone their own age and lost them in their 40s or 50s. I figure it’s more important to enjoy the time you do have together.

My thoughts exactly. You never know what the future holds, so make the most of love now - the future will take care of itself.
[Reply]
Well, let’s see… I can’t think of any truly strange questions I’ve been asked, unless you count someone asking me what my due date was when I wasn’t pregnant (can we say serious FAUX PAS? Yeah, I never, ever wore that dress again. lol).
Myths: I think I’d like to see a story with a mummy hero. I can only imagine the writing challenge that would be. How would somethng like that even be done?
If a friend told me he/she was a vampire and had an explanation, I’d be absolutely fascinated. I’d want to know every little detail.
My superhero name requires a brief explanation. It has been determined that my main superpower is this: whenever I need to set down a bag full of garbage, it will inevitably set down so that it’s unbalanced & will therefore fall over. Happens every time, even when I try to fool it, and even when I’m setting it against a wall or door. So my superhero name would be “TrashGirl” or something equally pathetic or ridiculous.
I would absolutely take a chance on someone with a longer life span than mine. Love is love, and when you find it, you grab it.
My questions: What’s in your TBR pile? What type of heroes or heroines do you NOT like to write? What is your favorite fragrance or type of fragrance? (I own http://www.ForYourNose.com)
I blogged this contest here:

Oh no, total faux pas! My mum had the same question asked her once & she was depressed for weeks I think (I was about 10 at the time so I remember). Thing is my mum’s actually a very slender woman, so if I were you I would absolutely blame the dress.
Mummy hero - love. “Don’t kiss me there dear, it might fall off.”
My to be read pile. Okay I knew the thing was too big, but when I started packing (I’m moving house at the moment) it filled whole box. A whole box! and not a small little box either. So what is the box? I read a lot of fantasy (so Carol Berg’s new one is the there), plenty of romance (Nalini’s new for example), I also love romantic-suspense, so there are a few of those & some historicals.
I don’t like heroes who are horrible. sounds like a contradiction I know, but I find them all the time. I guess they are just meant to be arrogant or something, but they just seem horrible. And really the only heroine who manage with them end up doormats (even if the characters don’t start that way).
As for fragrances, I avoid anything to floral as my nose often thinks it’s real and I end up with hayfever (stupid nose)
PS: thanks for sharing thins think.

LMAO @ “don’t kiss me there, dear” comment. Hilarious!
We just moved into a “new” house at the beginning of the year (actually moved into my in-laws’ house when they were moving into assisted living, so we’ve got 2 house-fulls packed into one house), so I absolutely feel your pain. I think my husband was a little stunned at how many boxes of books I have — some are my “keepers”, but a lot of them are TBR.

Hello!
Hmmm as for a legend to be twisted…werewolves is the most obvious choice. Hmm..what about the Greek gods?
My superhero name? I am not a superhero material xD
My question for you is, have you traveled anywhere? Also, where would you like to travel?
I am not out of high school yet, so I don’t have any exotic jobs.
If someone close to me said he/she was a vampire…well, he/she didn’t kill me right? Or..other people…I hope. So it’s all good.
If I loved the person who would live longer than me and he loved me back, I would definitely take that chance. “Love is.”

Well I live in New Zealand but I was born in Sth Africa, does immigration count as travel? I’ve also been to the US (traveled around a lot as a kid, since then San Fran as an adult), also been to Australia since it’s on our door step. Plans for Europe in the future?
What about everyone else - favourite travel spots?

Hi Louise - Thanks for coming. Wow, lots of Q’s to answer.
1. Can’t think of any strange questions I’ve been asked but I did work doing auto body one summer during college. That was my strangest job.
2. I’d like to debunk the vampire is a meanie head myth. And have them live among the general population happily. Also, that they can have children as you have them do.
3. If my “friend” told me he was a vampire I’d ask him if he only took from the willing. If he said yes, then I’d be cool with that.
4. Oh heaven am I a planner. I’d be the super hero - Master of Organization.
5. You know, my husband is 10 yrs older than me so he’s taking that chance everyday - I guess I would too.
So if you’re a planner does that mean you outline your books or are you a free flow writer?
I rsvp’d.
[Reply]
I come up with a general plan, then make quick plot cards for every scene I’m going to write. Then I… write
But before I start planning the book, I do write a bit free-flow. Ideas usually comes to me in one or two very vivid scenes so I write those first. It gives me an idea of the characters and general story.
PS: as superhero Master of Organization, how do the general population call for your help? because I sure could use a bit of that super-power
[Reply]
Instead of the Bat signal how about a huge ? glowing in the night sky as a call for help?

good idea, or maybe a !

- All the jobs I’ve had are pretty typical, the weirdest was when I worked for Abercrombie & Fitch and they actually told us in the interview that our job was to wear the clothes and look “cool” not to help the customers or anything of that nature. I thought it was the weirdest business philosophy, but apparently by hiring people as “branding representatives” the company can’t be sued for firing you if you show up to work with blue hair or 20 facial piercings.
- I’d take the chance on someone a lot older than me, but I’d feel bad for their side of things. It’d be a lot easier knowing you’ll probably die first then it would be knowing someone you love will go first.
Thanks! The book looks like a fun read, I’ll add it to my TBR

I guess the “branding representatives” thing would explain why in some shops the sales assistants are so unhelpful. When I worked in clothes I couldn’t wear the clothes since it was men’s stuff, and we had to help people - we had to ask an opened ended question within x minutes of someone walking in the store. Which made us the annoying assistants who talk to you even when you don’t want to talk to them.

Fun post!
One strange question I’ve been asked is whether my husband is a hot lover or I just have a good imaginations. My answer, “Both.” LOL
A myth I’d like to see twisted is Beauty and the Beast. Why does he have to change? Why can’t Beauty accept him for who he is?
I’m not sure what I’d do if someone told me he/she were a vampire. But I know emotional vampires, and try to avoid them before they such the energy from me.
Weird jobs, let’s see. I once demonstrated a pasta machine in a cooking store. Didn’t sell even one.
My superhero name would have to be something to do with being clumsy. LOL That would be an oxymoron, wouldn’t it? When I was a kid I pinned a red towel around my neck and jumped from a tree. Didn’t fly. Splat, plus the pin tore the towel so I was in double trouble. So maybe SuperSplat would be me and I would land in a crash each time I appeared. LOL
[Reply]
The personal things people ask! Good answer though.
For a Beauty and the Beast story along those lines, try “The Fire Rose” by Mercedes Lackey. This is one of my favourite books actually. Not the best written or anything but it’s always a great pick me up, and a quick read.

Hey Louise!
Part of the reason I love BBB so much is because I’m introduced to authors I haven’t heard of before
I like that you take into account iron problems and how it can effect people differently depending on how they feel about the person (I never quite understood how some heroines get ‘turned on’ when bitten by someone they HATE–as in the enemy, not I hate you but secretly you are my true love).
Your Question:
What about you, would you take a chance on someone who is likely to live a lot longer than you?
–Well this can happen in RL too right? Obviously not to such an extreme, but its always a gamble how long you’ll have with someone anyhow. If I was diagnosed with terminal cancer tomorrow I would still fall in love and hope for the best (well as ‘hopeful’ as I am normally, which is pretty cynical anyhow) even though my partner is likely to live a lot longer than me.
I would have more issue with the discrepency in looks–wouldn’t she (that is Zara) look like a cougar pretty quickly because Gideon ages slower? (or did I misunderstand that?). Its kind of why I sometimes look at paranormal romances and go ‘wait wait wait. you want to stay HUMAN when he’s a VAMPIRE/WEREWOLF/WHO KNOWS WHAT, knowing you’ll AGE, and he’ll stay BEAUTIFUL. You’re a masochist aren’t you? That’s the only explanation’.
My Question to You:
You talked about your job influences and writer influences, is there any one thing that makes you feel inspired–a plot trope or story element?

Good question. Zara is safe on the cougar front because at this point in time her & Gideon both have approximately the same remaining life spans. However, this was something that Gideon’s first wife had to deal with - and yes I think it would be very hard. But I guess you could equate to one partner really letting themselves go, or and illness taking away their looks.
For my inspiration, hmmm, romance always romance. I’m always looking to pair people up. I see a girl alone on a beach & I think who’s she waiting for? what’s he like? or will she bump into someone when she goes to get an ice-cream… Then my imagination is off. I’ve got a girl, I’ve got an ice-cream splattered guy. where do I put them? what else can I do with them? Maybe he’s secretly undercover and doesn’t want to draw attention to himself. Maybe he’s not human and has horrible reactions to the cold and needs to be warmed up right away where the ice-cream hits his chest. He’s forced to quickly rip off his shirt…. And my brain is off. I better stop now before this comments gets to long.
- hope that answers your question.

Hi Louise,
Good interview and questions for us readers. Your book sounds good I will have to search for it.
Do you tend to set many small goals or one large one?
What do you do to reward yourself when you meet your goals?
Do you keep track of random plot bunnies as they pop up or do you let them run free and grow until you need them?
bbl to answer questions….I have to run to physical therapy for now
[Reply]
Hope you enjoy it
I guess that I set a combination. Small goals like, x many words today, and big goals like finish the darn book.
goals - people are supposed to set goals
The little ones don’t really get rewarded (Unless I worked harder than I expected to achieve it), big ones yes, absolutely get rewards. Rewards are part of the fun.
Plot bunnies are usually allowed to stay. Because I’m carefully plotted out I don’t get to many and if I do they usually make the story/characters deeper. But sometimes they slow things down and send it off track - they have to go. I keep a record of them, sometimes they mean a story later for another character.

Hello there! I can’t recall a specific question, but once about 17 years ago, my husband and I were in a beer store and after I payed, the woman looked at me and said, I’m sorry but your son can’t carry the beer, you have to. I was like Oh no she didn’t!! She was from India I guess, the little red dot in her forehead, and I was like, hey, this is my HUSBAND, not my son, and boy, he don’t ever let me forget it!! As for a superhero name, right now my son has been calling me Dino Mom for several reasons, I just turned 40, plus I’ve had shoulder surgery, so I can’t lift my right arm too good, and when I reach for stuff he says I look like a T-Rex with stumpy arms. Gotta love him. I worked on a farm, which I think is the hardest job ever, fast food, clothing, and right now I am a mail carrier, which I guess is the strangest job ever. I love it when customers open their doors, you shoud see what some people are wearing, or NOT WEARING!! For real, some people have answered their door naked!! One guy like in his 30’s opened the door wearing a superman outfit!! No lie! I’d like to see some shapeshifter twists, what if the world was filled whith shifters, or werewolves and the “regular humans” were the poor ones born weird? Por sould can’t change like the rest of us!!I would love it if someone told me they were a vampire, as long as they don’t kill people, and take only willing donations, I’d be cool with it. I would take a chance on love anytime. It’s such a rare experience, I think anybody could go at anytime, car accidents, natural occurances, who knows, so grab love why you can. So some questions for you, how do you feel about ebooks? I saw you were giving some away on your blog, do you feel they are the new thing for the future, or do you hate to give up that feel of holding a book in your hands? How do you feel about b movies? Go out of your way to see them or are they a waste oftime? (me, I love b horror movies, the cheesier the better!) Do you read comic books at all? Well, your book sounds great, I put it in my wish list at amazon, will def check it out when I get some mula. thanks for being here!

OOOO, I love the people opening their doors stuff. Naked! love it. How about the werewolf twist. Opens the door, “Oops, pardon me, sir, you seem to have forgotten to tuck your tail in. Guess you’re not human then, explains all the bones in the trash.”
eBooks I wasn’t sure to begin with but since I’ve got a reader I’m hooked. Many, many books, all in my handbag when ever an emergency reading situation arises
As for tacky B movies, love ‘em, especially action & sci-fi.
I do read comics. Not often I admit, but my hubby has a good collection so I dip in and out of that.

Hello, Louise. Love your name. My mom was named Louise. My dad used to say with such love. I had always hoped to find that myself some day. Anyway, I too worked in a men’s clothing store. It was rather fun. I got a lot of dates out of the deal. My most mundane job though was as a substitute teacher in a middle school. Boring. Teachers just leave busy work for students when they are away. Not a lot of fun to be had with that.
I think it would be just frickin’ awesome to find out someone was a vampire. It’s one of those notions that I, deep down, pray is true. That vampires really do exist. I know. I sound odd. But I would love for it to be true.
As far as a superhero, I would be Madame Munificent! Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?
Well, that’s it for me here in the very hot, humid USA today.
Thanks for the great reads.

Hi Louise, thanks for the very fun interview, I would also have a few questions:
- If you could meet any character of any novel, who would you like to meet?
- If a malicious genie forced you to read only 3 books for the rest of your life, which 3 books would you choose?
- How do you name your characters? After people you know or do you do research, or how?
- Who is your favourite character in your novels, and why?
Exotic/crazy/strange jobs you’ve had that were a lot more mundane than they sounded? In high school I worked as a “hostess” at conferences, it sounded much more elegant than it was: I was either in charge of the cloakroom or taking care of the attendees registration.
What about you, what are some of the myths that you’d like to see twisted/changed/ or turned on their heads? Oh I like it when werewolves can change whenever tehy please and not just at the full moon. I’m sure there are others too, but right now I can’t think of any other.
If I were a superhero my power would be empathy. Not too cool, I’d much rather be able to dreamwalk or fly, but I have a talent for that oh and I would be perfect to also be a calming superhero. I do that very well too. So I guess that makes me the Tranquilizer Empath

It’s actually the second title I had. I changed it after a beta reader came back and said “it’s not as vampirey for a paranormal.” So I decided to change the title to emphasize the human element. I got to give the cover designer idea, like I’d ratehr his face was a mystry, but she did the rest from there. I like what she came up with

What about you, how would you respond if someone you knew said ‘actually I’m a vampire & bite people & drink blood - Oh & I have an explanation?
Well for me? I honestly think I’d be a little shocked as well as disbelieving I think in this case I might need proof no matter how open minded I see myself.
What about you, would you take a chance on someone who is likely to live a lot longer than you?
For this question? I’d have to say yes especially if I were really fond of the person either personally or platonically.
Ok my question is this.
Is it possible for any of your vampires to fall in love with or pursue a relationship with the person they’re taking blood from? Or would that be to difficult for either the vampire or donor?
This book sounds great! Good luck with it!

[Reply]
Shocked & disbelieving is pretty much Zara’s responce to Gideon as well
The vampyre/donor relationship is not a bonded one, it’s casual. There a group of donors & a group of vampyres, and anyone can become a donor (they just need to know vamps are real). So yes, relationships between donors & vamps occur. If things don’t work out, the vampyre would find a new donor. In this case Zara will donate for Gideon, although here the relationship happenes before the donation. If fact finding out what he is, is both a shock & a struggle for her.
I hope when you give it a try it meets your expectations

I’m sure it will. Thanks!

How about you? Strange questions you’ve been asked? Exotic/crazy/strange jobs you’ve had that were a lot more mundane than they sounded?
The one job that I held for a really long time, was fairly mundane most of the time (retail manager), but there were experiences that were crazy and strange. From the guy who wanted help, but made me call a male manager, because he wanted advice on what condoms to buy. (Though actually, seems like the woman’s opinion might be pretty important. I was over 21, by the way.) To the guy who specifically asked for me (damn, those nametags) for advice on buying an emema. Which, by the way, I have no personal experience with!
What about you, what are some of the myths that you’d like to see twisted/changed/ or turned on their heads?
I love the way the cable channel Syfy reimagined Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz in Alice and Tin Man. I would love to see more fairy tales done that way in print.
I’m still taken by Planster
If you were a superhero, what would you call yourself?
There was a (probably) obscure British comedy called No Heroics a few years ago, that took place in a bar, and portrayed ’superheroes’ off-duty. My favorite character was Electroclash, who could communicate with anything electronic. I’d steal that, or Polaris from The X-Men.
For Louise: How did you decide to make Human with a Twist the book (of all the ones that you wrote) THE BOOK; the one that you would finish and try to get published? +40

Romance Writers NZ runs a competition every year (the Clendon award), and tag line for which is esentially: just finish the darn book already.
I decided to finish the darn book and enter, having that dead line, as well as some plotting advice gave me the kick I needed. Then at our conference I had a chance to pitch the book, and that as they say is that.

* Laughs * With half the people I know off line and on-line… such a comment would not seem that weird. My three boys (twelve, nine and five) are convinced that I am “Goth” (and no, I do not dress all in black or wear the garments. Too expensive and not in this weather LOL). It really is a trip with those three especially when we go clothes shopping. As for the explanation, I am always there to listen, what friends and peeps likes most about me.
If you were a superhero, what would you call yourself?
Rao / Raonaid, the visionary druid (LOL, visionary druid is something I came up with nine, or so years ago. It’s a title i tend to sometimes use)
What about you, would you take a chance on someone who is likely to live a lot longer than you?

For a spell there I was the only female in the household. Even the house pet, a toy miniature black and red daschund was male (His name is Warlock). Now there is three females in the house, so I’m not alone. It’s me, a female minature auburn, medium haired daschund (named Cynder) and a pomchii (pomerian and chihuahua mix) named Nyxie.

Alas, no strange questions that I can think of, though I dare say it must have happened at some point. LOL And no strange jobs. . . just working in a deli senior year in high school. Then comes lots and lots of years of school.
2) - Hi!
I don’t mind myths being changed — said in another posting that sometimes we need changes to be different, but sometimes traditions aren’t bad either. But what myths I’d want to see different. . . I haven’t a clue, actually. Never even thought of it before! LOL
Being a superhero, I have no clue what I’d call myself. LOL But when I was a kid, I sure wished I was Wonder Woman, though when I got older I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of wearing the outfit. . . LOL
Well, I think it’s a lot easier to take the chance on someone who is bound to live longer than me, versus if I were the long living vampire. I almost imagine me living in seclusion or something so I couldn’t meet anyone because I knew I’d lose them, and just to keep facing that, gotta be tough. But this way, not being the 150 year old, a bit easier to try.

answers to your questions….
I have been asked alot of strange questions in my life. One of the fun ones I always remember was about my name tag. I alway hated wearing one so I would make up names to put on them. I spent about a year wearing one that proclaimed me Dorkmeister, but then someone figured it out. I was waiting on a woman that asked me if I knew that my “name” meant master of penises? My answer is what got me in trouble….Of course I do. I am in charge of a bunch of dickheads.
When I was 17 I was promoted to a position that made my family very uncomfortable. I was the very young very female Crew Leader for a construction crew made up entirely of Parolees and homeless men. Nothing ever happened other than building houses.
I like to see each author’s personal twist on myth and legend. What they add oe subtract from the “original”. My favorite of all to see turned on it’s ear is religion, not out of disrespect but the stories can be wonderful - and despite what some institutions may say - and open for interpretation.
I would at the very least listen to their story and explination. As far as how it might cange things. Won’t know until it happens…
I have no idea what I would call myself if I was a superhero…can I fall back on Dorkmeister?
I already do. Most will outlive me I am not the healthiest person.

While there were a few space observatory sites, most of the sites that came back on that internet search were bizarre (and disturbing) to say the least. I’ll leave it to your imagination…

Hi Louise,
Thanks for coming along to BittenbyBooks and congratulations on your first book! It’s got to be really exciting for you having it go out into the world. I hope that you get to thoroughly enjoy the experience.
What are some of the myths that you’d like to see twisted/changed/ or turned on their heads?
Well, considering that so many are being twisted and turned–which is fantastic and why I read in the paranormal/urban fantasy section so heavily–I’ve tried to come up with one I haven’t heard about making an appearance…a Banshee. A heroine who just happens to howl occasionally at sickbeds, or perhaps want to washing a stranger’s bloody clothes in a nearby brook or stream. I’m sure there’s plenty of twists that could be thrown in to make her a most unusual paranormal paramour for that striking gentleman caller and no doubt, the reaper has been trying to woo her for months now and just won’t take no for an answer…
How would you respond if someone you knew said ‘actually I’m a vampire & bite people & drink blood - Oh & I have an explanation?
It’s possibly a sign of the times…but isn’t that already a subculture? I doubt I’d be all that surprised or run screaming for the hills, unless of course it was my dentist informing me just after I’d sat down in the chair and had a ton of gear holding me firmly in place…then I expect I might react rather badly…
If you were a superhero, what would you call yourself?
That Guy; I think that the ordinariness and the anonymity of it would help contain complexes about feeling everyone loves your superhero persona more than you…
Would you take a chance on someone who is likely to live a lot longer than you?
I think that that’s the easier side of the equation…at least you’ll have spent your life with the person you love, they’ll be the ones left with the short end of the stick. If they’ve roughly double your lifespan, I would imagine you’d hope they’d have a second chance at dying first. And doesn’t that sound like a weird sentiment!
One for you: Is the world you created only populated by ‘vampyres’ or are there other diseases out there accounting for other mythologies?

Good idea about the banshee, I think I read a blurb for a banshee book the other day, I must remember to go & look it up - I don’t think she was the heroine however.
My book only has vampyres, but the way things are set up I guess the door is open to the possibility.

2. Hi Louise!
cool, my today is your yesterday?!
none of my jobs have been anything but mundane, but I have had some crazy patrons at the public library. the most recent being a lady in her 50s who came in wearing a cardboard box hat covered with aluminum foil which she said she needed to wear while using our computers so she wouldnt “catch cancer”. As far as myths being turned on their heads, I’ve gotta admit I’m not that knowledgeable on myths to even know where to begin but I love reading what writers like u write!
I have a question when u say that “It’s more prevalent in men but the gene is dominant enough that the vampire community is about 60/40.”
Does that mean the vampire community is 60% male and 40% female? or 60% mixed human&vamp to 40% full vamp?
Loving the premise for Redemption’s Kiss by the way!! And when it comes to love, I’d definitely take a chance on someone even if they might someday outlive me. Once you become an adult, I think age is less important because it’s not like our brains are behind in development from the people 5 or 10 years older!lol So yeah, I think age isnt that big a deal, just maturity and sharing similar outlooks on life.

Yay, a fellow librarian (well, I’m an ex-librarian now but still).
60% male, 40% female.
I enjoyed writing “Redemption’s Kiss”. Here’s this guy, attracted to this girl, thinks he’s about to get some action, and suddenly her teeth are in his neck. My first thought on his natural response - panic!
[Reply]
lol, I like that - a misunderstanding that could cause him not to like her at all or even be afraid when she likes him and doesnt even mean harm. poor gal

Hi Louise,
1) How about you? Strange questions you’ve been asked? Exotic/crazy/strange jobs you’ve had that were a lot more mundane than they sounded?
-I can’t remember any strange questions, so that probably means nobody asked me any, yet. As for unusual jobs, I used to work as a post-lady (or should I say mail-woman?) for about a month, it was a temporary job, but since then I can really appreciate the hardships a mail person has to go through.
2) What about you, what are some of the myths that you’d like to see twisted/changed/ or turned on their heads?
-The dragon stories, they should have an interesting explanation.
3) What about you, how would you respond if someone you knew said ‘actually I’m a vampire & bite people & drink blood - Oh & I have an explanation?
-I’d certainly think they’d gone crazy, then would be seriously considering if I’m really that good friends with them:)
4) If you were a superhero, what would you call yourself?
- Black Cat. I love cats, and black seems to be the color for a kick-ass super-heroine:)
5) What about you, would you take a chance on someone who is likely to live a lot longer than you?
-I can’t see why not, unless he’s going to stay young while I’m getting older and older. This kind of relationship would just mean that I’m not going to watch him pass away, so that would be really up to him to decide if he’s up to it.
I’d like to ask:
What scenes are the easiest for you to write?
How do you choose names for your characters?
What comics do you read?:)
Thanks!

I’m actually in the middle of writing a dragon story and trying to come up with good explanations is fun - don’t know if it’ll ever see the inside of a printing press though. Ah the vagaries of the writing life. All that hard work and it could end up as nothing the clutter under the bed.
Cool name! I can totally see that heroine now!
The easiest ones - I don’t think I can define that except to say that some scenes live really vividly in my mind and others don’t come alive the same way & I have to push harder.
As for names, some characters arrive in my head names already attached. For others I spend a fair bit of time looking around on baby naming sites.
Comics, my favourite would be the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman, I like his books too.
What about you? Do you read comics - which ones?
[Reply]
I love comics:) I usually read tie-ins to my favorite TV series, like Buffy, Stargate or Star Trek, and also X-Men and others. Of original comics, my favorites are Rising Stars and Midnight Nation by JM Straczynski.
I’ve got Gaiman’s comics on my wishlist too, I guess they’re a must read:)

I’ve had people not believe I’m my age, even when dressed in normal clothing. Like 12 in the booze section of the grocery store when I’m of age, like “should you be looking at that?” Not the worst thing, really.
Mundane is answering eBay questions that are clearly stated in listings. Strange I guess is modeling when you are hanging out with your fellow model friend at a dance party, and whenever she gets close to your fave to make sure you can hear her, a pack of females start snapping pictures. Or, younger as a model and having boy scouts cleaning up the park you’re shooting in chase you down and start snapping the camera and running in your way like the paparazzi. That was weird and yet funny, in its way.
I like vampires who can be around garlic and crosses ’cause I like those things.
I’d be surprised if anyone was more “vampire”-like than me.
Hours, pale skin, understanding blood is life (but no drinking), adoration of fangs, biteyness…
Purrversia is actually my superhero nickname. My friends gave it to me from a love for Catwoman and a somewhat dirty mind. We invented superpowers for ourselves, and mine was misinterpreting things in my mind so they would come true in a humorously risqué way. Odd, but true.
I’d like to write a comic about it one day, but for now, it’s a modeling/Twitter name.
Yes, love can overcome many things, but I know it would be harder for the survivor.
One of my fave travel spots is Hawaii. I miss it.

See I’m sure modeling is one of those things that sounds glamorous but is actually a lot of hard work. Does it have glamorous moments?
The original title was: A Risk Worth Taking?
But I much prefer the new one.
My Superhero name would be Labyrinth, because I’m always getting lost in my own mind
[Reply]
Cool, and yes, modeling is a hard job with a lot of work, but it helps if you are naturally talented because then it doesn’t so much matter if your photographer is shy about giving directions.

Hi and it is always nice to meet a new author. BBB has it’s finger on the pulse of new authors!
I have had alot of jobs but nothing like selling great coffee. I’m from the Bible Belt and also out in BFE.
I always let the authors do the changing of myths. I just enjoy reading about them!
If he looked like someone I could really get into hell yes bite my neck! I hope I would get the feeling of a life time of orgasims.
Sure I would take a chance on someone that would live longer than myself. I might as well have all the happiness I could have and enjoy it to the bitter end.

I used to work in a bakery/pastry shop and occasionally we would get customers wanting to know if we would make cakes in the shape of a penis…those were some interesting conversations.

Hi Louise. I know all about the age difference. My honey is 18 years older than me. Doesn’t really bother me…actually it has become more of a joke. Like, I’ll say, don’t worry honey, I promise to visit you often in the ‘home’.
I see that you are fan of the Hobbit, did you like that better than the LOTR? The whole spider thing just makes me shiver, so I have to give a little edge to LOTR because there is less spider scenes.

2. It wasn’t exactly an exotic or strange job, but when I was 16 I worked for a restaurant that was known for it’s huge salad bar with a myriad of salad varieties. I worked every Saturday from 8-5 with a 70 year old woman who was THE salad expert. She was also a royal b****…LOL! Talk about mundane…and hell listening to that constant carping!
If someone I knew told me they were a vampire, I would be like, “Look, you can explain all you want, but I really don’t care as long as you don’t kill me. Also, please make me immortal like you!”
I would take that chance if I loved that person so much that I felt I could not live without him. It would be worth it!
