ORIGINAL RECIPE OR SUPER-COMBO?
Hey, y’all! (she says in her very best Paula Deen voice) Thanks so much for joining me today here at Bitten by Books while I chat a bit about life, death, afterlife, shifting shapes, and personality disorders (not necessarily in that order).
One of the most common pieces of advice that seasoned authors give to us newer authors is “don’t read reviews.” There are others, but that one ranks as both oft-repeated and hard to follow. Lots of reasons to not read reviews exist, and number one is that reviews will make you crazy. I suppose after that, the other reasons don’t matter quite as much, since so many of us are already neurotic in some way. We don’t need to make ourselves crazier.
However, I admit to reading reviews. I know, I know… I even read bad reviews, because as much as I love reading why someone liked my books, I’m curious about why someone disliked them, too. I have no illusions that everyone who picks them up will enjoy what’s between the covers, so it’s hard to get upset over bad reviews. But what does reading reviews have to do with this post? In the last two weeks, I’ve read two new-ish reviews of THREE DAYS TO DEAD, and two similar, spot-on points were made that inspired this post and really made me think hard about the series and my heroine, Evangeline Stone (so Bravo, bloggers!).
To paraphrase these points: 1) Evy used to kill things for a living, and she enjoyed it A LOT, which can be a bit of a turn-off; 2) pre-resurrection Evy wasn’t nice, or a person you’d want to know, or even (probably) root for.
Which is oh so true. In developing Evy as a character, I had to figure out what sort of person would, at the age of eighteen, be facing adult jail time and, instead, opt into an organization that trains you to be a killer. To the outside world, most of the Triad Hunters are not nice people—they have a hard, dirty job to do to keep the city’s Dreg population in line. Original Recipe Evy, as seen in the flashbacks, is all prickles and sharp edges and, yes, a killer. She’s someone I’d definitely want watching my back, but not someone I’d want to be friends with.
And then she dies and is resurrected into the body of deceased Chalice Frost, and we get Super-Combo Evy. It isn’t enough that Evy gets an untrained, somewhat clumsy body; she also gets some unwanted emotional feedback and physical attraction, and it’s these parts of Chalice’s personality that smooth out Evy’s roughest, prickliest edges. The emotional impact of fully inhabiting Chalice’s body is further explored in As Lie the Dead, from dealing with the people in Chalice’s life to exploring Super-Combo Evy’s attraction to Wyatt. She’s given a second chance to try life as a nicer, more emotionally-balanced person, and she must decide to either embrace change or fight it.
So let’s get kind of morbid for a minute. If you were to die tomorrow, and got to choose to come back to life for three days in the body of any other person, who would it be? This person doesn’t have to be dead (like Chalice was); they’ll just vacate for a while. Your mind/personality in anyone else’s body for three days.
Who? Why? What would you do? Pretend to be this person? Take their body and go do something over the top? Talk to me!

I think I’d come back in the body of whatever waitress George Clooney will be porking next. No, seriously, I think it would be someone like Selma Hayak or Chrisy Turlington-Burns that not only is gorgeous, but uses their celebrity and $$$ to contribute to great causes around the world.
How do you keep track of your world-building?
Was Evy’s last name Stone for a reason (her coldness, some elemental ability) or just something you picked?

Ooooh, GC. Yum.
World-building is tracked in a nice, big 3-ring binder. I have tabs for the different species, and pages on most of the main characters. Whenever I create something new, it goes into the binder to help me keep track of things. I’d be lost without it.
I’ve always liked the last name Stone. And in some ways, it’s an homage to a favorite DC Comics character, Victor “Cyborg” Stone.

If i could pick anyone’s body to live in for three days i would probably pick some like Lady GaGa. Strange choice to be sure. So that i could go out and do completely outrageous over the top things and no one would bat an eye. That way i would know what it like to just go out and live without being restricted by the shyness that has plagued me all my life.
Kelly we encountered some of the more unusual and less wrote about creatures in your first book “Three Days to Dead” what made you add in the gargoyles(which i love BTW)?
Also, Can we expect to see some of your secondary characters get books of their own in the future?
Are you going to stay with this series for a while or have you already considered trying to juggle a whole new series as many authors do?
Thanks

Gargoyles are such an under-used creature. They pop up once in a while (such as Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dam as comic relief, or the TV show “Special Unit 2″), but aren’t featured very often. I wanted to use some of the lesser-seen monsters in Dreg City, and gargoyles were an easy choice.
Secondary characters getting their own books — that’s really something to think about in the future, and a lot of it depends on continued sales of the series. I’d love to get to write for some of the other characters, and I hope to do so in short stories, if nothing else.
I’ve actually got a second series I’m juggling. It’s a modern superhero series that will come out with Pocket next year (more info coming). Fingers crossed I can juggle well.
[Reply]
I would pick Katherine Hepburn. She was a great actress and admired by all. I love her voice and her style. She was strong & did things her own way.
Will there be more books in this series. And if so how many?

I don’t think I’d want to come back in someone else’s body. I’d still be me inside and I wouldn’t fit into their life.
When your first book came out they had already announced a release date for the second. Do you think that the publisher should have held off on the release date since knowing there would be a second book took away some of the suspense from the story?

That’s a very good question, and something that’s been mentioned before. I think yes, in some ways, knowing there will be a series took away some of the suspense. However, in any first person series starter, you pretty much *know* the narrator will survive. In the case of THREE DAYS TO DEAD, the suspense was in *how* she survived (and whether or not the people around her survived, as well).

Hi Kelly - Thanks for being here.
If I were to come back in another body it would have to be a fit one like Lucy Lawless’ since I’m a fitness buff. There is no way I’d want to come back in an unfit body no matter who they were.
I love your idea here. What made you go with this theme?
I rsvp’d.
[Reply]
Thanks! Don’t tell anyone, but I’ve always been fascinated with stories that deal with people inhabiting the bodies of other people. With or without their permission. When I was developing this series, using that particular theme seemed very natural, and I’m pleased with what it developed into.

If I were to die tomorrow (*sigh*) I would want someone who is close to my family so I can say good bye, and maybe ease their suffering. I would love to do other things as well, but this is the most important.
Ivy loved killing? oh the horror! Something new, and I like it. Usually most heroines don’t like killing, and I am getting (kind of) tired of that.

It doesn’t concern me, as much as it makes me think. I don’t always interpret a character the same way as someone who isn’t writing her.
I definitely want to get a reaction from readers, just as long as the reaction isn’t revulsion (hehe). Evy isn’t a character everyone will like, and I’m cool with that. I happen to love her to death (er, no pun intended).

I would love to be Dara Torres for 3 days, especially during the Olympics. She’s a smart, mature, articulate, blazingly fast swimmer. I’d love to feel what it’s like to swim like a dolphin, to finish a race faster than athletes half my age, enjoy the professional post-swim massage, receive an Olympic medal, conduct intelligent interviews, and hug my young child (mine are all grown up).

Hey Kelly! I can understand folks being uneasy with Pre-Rez Evy. Since I tend towards the violent sort it wasn’t an issue for me, plus either go full way or don’t go at all–she was who she was and now she’s something different.
That said I like Super-Combo Evy–she has some…interesting reactions. Does she count as a ninja yet?
Your Question:
Who? Why? What would you do? Pretend to be this person?
–That’s a weird notion. Can it be a fictional character? XD The idea of taking over someone’s life in RL wigs me. Though I think I’d want to be Felicia Day for 3 Days (ha that pun). I admire her quite a bit–she is the ULTIMATE geek/gamer/nerd girl, yet she has turned it into something to embrace and be proud of. I’d go hit up Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion and Joss Whedon for dinner/lunch. Oh and Maurissa Tancharoen, for much the same reasons actually. I couldn’t ever hope to be like them, but I’d settle for just being them for a few days.
My Questions(s):
–When envisioning the series, did you submit the manuscript with an over-reaching story-arc, or did you try to keep your focus on each individual book’s story-arc?
–What are you reading lately?
Also I saw recipe and thought there was going to be a recipe and I got hungry (but well for some reason your interview made me want to make Orange Chicken…well actually I know why, Evy reminds me of fresh ginger).

When I submitted the first book as a series, I also submitted short blurbs for two more books. It was mostly to let my editor know I knew where I was going with the story. I didn’t have to talk about the over-arcing story, but each book definitely supports the series story in some big way.
Lately I haven’t been reading a whole lot. I’m preparing to move house in just a few days, so when I haven’t been packing, I’ve been writing Dreg City #4. But I’m about a quarter of the way into reading Alan Moore’s WATCHMEN, and it’s fantastic!
And I have to ask - fresh ginger? ‘Splain?
[Reply]
heh ah two reasons:
The first time I read Three Days to Dead, I did it in between making sugared ginger candies–so my hands smelled like fresh ginger no matter what I did. Not a bad smell, but it can be very…strong. The second time I read it, for a group read-along, I could still smell the ginger on the pages. When a friend asked me to describe Evy in a few words I automatically said ’she’s like ginger’.
My friend needed me to explain it as well, but I felt embarrassed telling her it was because I was cooking at the time! So I said “She’s got a tough outer layer, is spicy and fresh, and she can be detrimental to your health if you’re not careful” Apparently it was the right thing to say as the group agreed. XD

It was kind of a series of moments, but the clearest in my mind is when I chose which editor/house to go with (there were three interested), and my agent officially accepted the deal on my behalf. I remember hanging up the phone with my agent, and calling my Dad. Babbling about choosing Bantam, probably shaking a little. In the middle of the conversation, my Call Waiting beeped. I looked at the caller ID and it said “Random House.” I told my dad, “I have to call you back, Random House is on the other line.” *click*
I chatted with my new editor for a bit, and then called my dad back, all kinds of excited and breathless. It was a fun afternoon.

Hi Kelly,
I really enjoyed Three Days to Dead and can’t wait to read As Lie the Dead.
Do you tend to set many small goals or one large one?
What do you do to reward yourself when you meet your goals?
Do you keep track of random plot bunnies as they pop up or do you let them run free and grow until you need them?
I am gonna have to do some thinking to answer you question. I will be back later.
[Reply]
When writing, I tend to set larger goals. I generally like to make a certain word count by the end of the week. Some days I have more time to write than others, so having a daily word count just doesn’t really work for me.
The only time I really reward myself is when I finish the first draft of a novel.
Plot bunnies…depends on the bunny. Some have taken the stories in amazing, unexpected directions. Others simply derail what I’m trying to do. I tend to think them through before letting them run wild or sticking them into a cage.
[Reply]
I’m not sure that I would choose anyone really famous. I think I would like to know what it was like to perform on stage in an orchestra solo (I have no musical instrument abilities at all) or a famous ballet dance. Maybe even, an Olympic ice-skating routine. (I took lessons when I was in elementary school, but stopped by the time I was in high school.)
For Kelly: How much research did you do to create the death and afterlife world in As Lie the Dead?
Did you deliberately choose the name Chalice for the dead person that Evy would come to inhabit? It seems more than coincidental that the word means a vessel, so to speak.

A lot of my research was for the creatures themselves, especially the Fey. Knowing their personalities, quirks, and habits, both in literature and pop culture, was important, so I knew which parts to pick and choose for my own world. Of course, the best part of creating the city itself, and deciding the layout. Choosing the neighborhoods, creating Mercy’s Lot, the intersecting rivers…it was a lot of fun.
Chalice/chalice - Dude! Can I sound all cool and say yes, it was deliberate? Because it wasn’t. Wow, that’s an amazing connection! I’d seen a movie around the time I was writing the first draft, and one of the character’s names was Chalice. I thought it was cool, so I went with it. LOL!
[Reply]
I thought about this for a while. And there were a few that came to mind. I mean I wouldn’t need to put a paper bag over my head if I came back as Halle Berry or someone like that.
But if I came back in someone else’s body I think I’d come back as Mae West. It would be very freeing to be looked at as a person with no limitations or expectations in personality. Imean it’s Mae West. I’d be able to say and do pretty much anything!
The world that you created is so full of character. Do you think you’ll ever write any full-length novels or short-stories about new or side characters within the same world?
By the way I loved the interview between you and Evy on your bio. Seriously funny!
Thanks!

I’d like to do more stories with the side characters. I have two available on Suvudu, my website and/or Scribd. Both feature side characters in the lead roles (Tybalt Monahan and Ash Bedford), and I would absolutely love to do more of these kinds of stories. The world of Dreg City is so large and layered, and there’s such a diverse cast of characters to pick from.

Hi Kelly! I have to say these books sound really interesting. I put them in my wish list at amazon, as soon as I get some mula I will def be checking them out. To answer your questions, I can’t decide who’s body to come back in. I play violin, and maybe I’d pick David Garret’s girlfriend, he plays violin and is smokin, but truth be told who knows, maybe he’s an ass and I wouldn’t want to spend time with him. I was going to name some political people, but don’t want any grief for that either. Okay, how bout Daryl Hannah, she’s a great actress, and I could see how it is in hollywood. I would def get her in the papers for a few days with the over the top stuff I’d do. No, def Milla jovovich, she plays kick ass gurls, and is in great shape, hopefully she’d be in the middle of a great movie. I like your about me page on your website. I happen to have 10 neurotic cats, I think everyone should have 1. I agree with you about the movies, secret of Nihm is great and I love the stand. So what book are you reading right now? Is there any out there you wished you came out with? DO you listen to audiobooks at all? I love audio, are yours available? Do you like comic books at all? How do you feel about those awesome b movies? Well thanks for being here, and I will def be checking them out.

There are so many books I wished I’d thought of first. Too many to list, but I am in awe of some of my fellow authors, especially in the urban fantasy field.
My books aren’t available as audiobooks yet. But maybe someday.
I love comic books! It’s a great medium, and there are some awesome comic writers working today.

Hi, thanks for the post, I would also have a few questions:
- If you could meet any character of any novel, who would you like to meet?
- If a malicious genie forced you to read only 3 books for the rest of your life, which 3 books would you choose?
- How do you name your characters? After people you know or do you do reserach, or how?
- Who is your favourite character in your novels, and why?
If I could come back after my death I woudl like to come back and see how my family was doing, and if only our offsprings were alive then see how my grandchildren are doing. I would like to be a complete stranger so I could befriend them and observe them

Any character - that’s a hard one. Um… let’s go with Bones, from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. There’s just something about a hot, possessive, super-sexy vampire.
3 Books: Watership Down, by Richard Adams; The Story Girl, by LM Montgomery; a book I co-wrote with my best friend that will probably never see the light of day, but I love it to pieces anyway.
Naming characters - It’s a mix of naming them after people I know (such as Pat the assistant and Dr. Thomas, from the opening scene of THREE DAYS TO DEAD), picking them out of thin air because I’d heard them recently and they worked (Evangeline, Chalice, Phineas), and researching to find meaning and/or a name I could bastardize to mean something (Isleen).
My favorite of my characters? Ack! Currently, I admit it’s Phineas el Chimal. He’s been so much fun since his very first appearance, and he continues to shake things up for Evy.
[Reply]
Hi Kelly!!! Who to pick would be hard? I’d most likely would want to pick someone rich so I can go and do all things I’ve wanted to do, but couldn’t. Like fly to Rome 1 day, Athens the next…all on a private jet. When my 3 days was up, they can worry about the bill…:)
Question about the series - since it all takes place over 3 days, does each book represent a day?
PS - I RSVPed
[Reply]
No, each book has its own timetable. The first book takes place, for the most part, over about three days, as the title suggests. But subsequent books occur in different periods of time.

Hi Kelly - Congrats on the release. Got my copy yesterday. If I had a chance to come back for 3 days after I’ve flatlined, I’d choose the body of an adrenaline junkie. This way I’d live life to the fullest whether it be cliff/sky diving, running with the bulls, or doing something totally illegal.
I know we’re only into Bk.2, but do you have the entire Evy series mapped out to the last book? Or will it be open ended?
Thanks,
K Louie /USA
[Reply]
I don’t have the series mapped out, because I’m not much of an outliner. However I do have a general idea of where things will end up, and of where I need Evy to go, both professionally and personally. Her story (if I can write it the way I hope to) will have a definite sense of conclusion.
[Reply]
Hmm, that’s kind of hard. I think I’d like to be someone famous from a reality show and then just trash their reputation for fun. Let’s see, let’s be someone like Kim Kardashian for a day and then just knit and read the entire day in public. I think the reality shows would throw a hissy fit and the public would go mad because she’s not out doing something ridiculous. Or maybe just make a large donation and put her dollars to good use, lol. That’s the evil side of me coming out =D
So it kind of seems like most people want to do something crazy and/or illegal for their 3 days, can you share some of the crazy things you’ve done in your past? Also, how did you come up with the title? It’s definitely one that’s interesting for the book contest, lol.
Thanks,

The title took forever! I ended up following some advice I read online and making columns on a piece of paper: Places, Things, and Adjectives. All of them had to relate to the book in some way, and then I mixed and matched. “Dead” and “Three Days” both seemed important and eye-catching, but it took a lot of combining to find a title I loved.
[Reply]
I’d come back as Oprah Winfrey for my three days and act like myself and see if people would still follow what is being said. That would be my little test to see if it is just the person or the message that people like.

I would want to come back as Diane Lane. I admire her immensely as an actress and as a person. And she’s beautiful. That kind of ageless beauty. And she gets to play opposite some really hot men. So hopefully it would be when she was filming a romantic scene with one of them.
My question is how do you decide your book is ready to present to a publisher? And do you think you would ever kill off a main character? BTW, I loved Three Days to Dead. Got six friends turned on to it as well. Thanks for the great read.

Knowing a book is ready to present to an agent/publisher isn’t always an easy one. I struck out with two other books before I signed with an agent on THREE DAYS TO DEAD. It was a combination of honing my craft, learning from my mistakes, and getting the right person to read the manuscript. You can only edit a book so many times before it’s as good as it’s going to get.
Technically, I’ve killed off two main characters, yes? *grin* They just happen to both come back…. Seriously, I’m not sure. I have no qualms about killing off supporting characters, as long as their death serves the story. If the story I’m telling demanded a main character die for good…I’d have to think really hard about it…
And thanks for spreading the word to your friends! Too cool!
[Reply]
Who? Why? What would you do? Pretend to be this person? Take their body and go do something over the top? I guess I would want to be someone famous and try to pretend to be them for three days. Although I would probably be a poor pretender. lol I can’t wait to pick up the second book in the series. I loved “Three Days To Dead.” Who are your favorite writers? And will there be a third book in this series? I RSVP’d for this event and Weldon.
[Reply]
Favorite writers: Stephen King, James Ellroy, Jeaniene Frost, Gena Showalter, Sydney Croft, Jackie Kessler, KA Mitchell, Patricia Briggs, SE Hinton, Laura Ingalls Wilder. On the TV side of things, I just adore Joss Whedon and the dudes who wrote LOST.
Yes, as of now, Bantam has purchased four books in the series. After that, we’ll have to wait and see.

Answering author’s questions:
If you were to die tomorrow, and got to choose to come back to life for three days in the body of any other person, who would it be? It would be nice if the person were female because, well, I like staying female. Being male is overrated. I don’t know if I want someone TOO famous. Dealing with paparazzi woudl be a pain. This person should be doing well financially and is in reasonably good health since I’d like to be comfortable while I’m “visiting”. The person should be well-liked, personable, and decently good looking but is unattached and childless to keep me from having to figure out how NOT to screw up her life during the time I’m occupying it. It would be great if the person is on vacation in a nice place. If that person is on vacation (in a place I’d like), I wouldn’t have to figure out how to handle their work. Would I do something over the top? Not no way, not no how. I’m borrowing the body. I don’t want to screw up their lives. Wow. How accurate are those tabloids? Who could this person be? Maybe it could be a famous painter or musician on vacation. I don’t think I’d like for that person to be a politician: too many mind games even when on vacation. A model? What are models’ lifes like? I’m not sure it’ll be pleasant. I think I’d like to be someone creative. I don’t really know who precisely … a ballet dancer? … a choreographer? … someone that had just finished working on the next great fantasy movie (like LOTR)? I can’t answer this question with a definitive name.
Questions for the author:
1. How did you decide on the names of the characters in your books?
2. How many other stories have you had published (including non-fiction or other genre)?
3. How did you decide on the number three (days)?
Entering the contest here is like playing “Simon Says” in the puzzle magazines but here it goes …
RSVP’d on Facebook for this event but that was this morning … so I don’t know if that counts. I couldn’t get on earlier since I’m sans a computer and have to borrow my daughter’s or the work computer.

2. None. THREE DAYS TO DEAD was my first published anything.
3. Three is a good, odd number. One wasn’t enough time, five seemed like too much. While writing the story, events unfolded in such a way that three days ended up being perfect.

Thank you! I’ve been creating stories since I was a child. You’d be amazed the complicated personal lives my Barbies had. I dabbled a lot in writing during middle and high school, but never took it very seriously. I enjoyed it, but it was for fun. It wasn’t until college that I started getting feedback that made me think, “wow, maybe I could do this professionally.”
I’d never been athletic. I’m somewhat artsy, but in the “it’s passable, but not spectacular” kind of way. I wanted to find something I could do and be good at.

If I were to die tomorrow, and got to choose to come back to life in another person’s body, that is a very tricky, tricky question. I guess I would want a person who has the financial ease to travel at random for I would love to visit the many places I have always wanted to visit, to absorb and take in those sights. I would not sully or do what this person would not do themselves. I would treat the body like I would a loan, the best in my ability to do so.

Each book tends to get its own playlist, usually by accident. For Book 4, I’ve been listening to a lot of The All-American Rejects, OAR, Lifehouse, Ferras, and Ryan Star. How many will there be in this series?
If I die today would I want to come back for 3 days? No I don’t think I would like coming back as someone else. First of all I don’t know how I would act in someone’s body that didn’t hurt constantly. Myself because anything else would be weird, and I know people close to me that might feel weird knowing they were being possessed. If I HAD to, I would come back as (regularly alive) Michael Jackson because I always thought, in many ways, he reminded me of myself, just far more rich and famous. I’d give a final performance, help people and visit my family. They’d believe it was me because it makes odd sense. And then I would videotape a message before I had to leave again for my people to watch when they miss me. I know it sounds strange, but it’s the closest one to my love of entertaining, learning, joy, dancing, singing and trying to make the world a better place.

But it’d probably be fun to do something I won’t suffer permanent consequences for. It’s three days. I want to have as much fun as possible and take the risks I never did. Just because.

Can’t wait to read As Lie the Dead!!

[Reply]
My road was rather long and bumpy. I began querying agents on Book 1 (a paranormal thriller) about five years ago and didn’t get much response to it. Set it aside and began querying Book 2 (superheroes) about a year after that. When that didn’t seem to do it, I had this new urban fantasy I wasn’t so sure about, but I queried it anyway. About two and a half months later (and within four days of the manuscript reaching my now-agent’s desk) I had an offer of representation. So it either took a few months, or a few years, depending on how you see it.
It sold to my editor fairly quickly, too. But I think Cherie Priest says it best (and I’m paraphrasing here), when she said “Boneshaker” turned her into a ten-year-overnight-success. Sometimes good things seem to happen quickly to folks, but there’s often a lot of work happening beforehand.
Thanks so much!

Heh. You’re probably right. But at least it would only be short term.

Hi Kelly,
I’m very intrigued by the concept of your Dreg City novels! I hadn’t heard about them before, but I’m definitely going to get a copy of ‘Three Days to Dead’ and start catching up. (That gives you a little time to start working on the third book in the series…)
In answer to your question:
I don’t think I’d like to come back for three days…it sounds a little like some kind of newfangled Chinese torture to be sure. I certainly wouldn’t want to come back and say hello and goodbye to loved ones. So I suppose if I had to come back, I’d like it to be somewhere I’ve never been, somewhere exotic. My some ‘body’ should come with a very healthy bank account and not mind missing three days of work…because hey, three days to party doesn’t leave room for the paperwork.
My question for you:
If you could have a ‘guest appearance or cameo’ by any character from any book in any genre who would it be and would Evy like them or loathe them or even try to kill them?
I RSVP’d for this event.
I attended AND participated in author Jill Myle’s event.
I RSVP’d for Louise Delamore’s event.
I RSPV’d for Samantha Sommersby’s event.

Oooh, that’s a hard one. I think Kate Daniels, from Ilona Andrews’ Magic series. Kate’s such an awesome warrior, and I think she and Evy could have some fun fighting bad guys together.

Hi Kelly,
I’d like to return as someone who’s rich, and I’d probably just pretend to be that person, because otherwise everyone would think me just crazy. I’d simply finish off whatever things I didn’t manage to finish while I was alive, and then just relax and have some fun for the last time, like going somewhere warm with a beach, and partying, etc:)
I’d like to ask:
do you do a lot of research before starting a new novel?
What scenes are the easiest for you to write?
Have you ever written something not in the paranormal genre?
Thanks!

Hi Dovile! My paternal grandmother’s family is from Lithuania!
*Research depends on the novel, and what sort of things I’m including. I’ve done research on paranormals, on weapons, on different aspects of science. A lot of the research is done as I’m writing, too, because I don’t often know what I’ll need to learn about until I’ve started the book.
*Easiest scenes…probably the one-on-one scenes between two characters. I love writing dialogue and interpersonal relationships, and those quieter scenes are some of the easiest for me to write.
*My very first novel wasn’t paranormal at all. It was very literary, kind of a quiet, character-driven novel. I found my footing in paranormal pretty quickly, and that’s where my heart (and creativity) lays.

I would come back as President Obamma. To put as many soilders in Pakastan to find Alquida and blow him to pieces. I would somehow get rid of the leader of the senate, I don’t know how to spell her name and then go on a vacation. I’m sure I have misspelled alot of words but I think you can get the idea.
What do you do for fun when you are not writing?
where did you go to college?

Fun? What is fun? (KIDDING!)
I enjoy reading and watching television. I’m hopelessly addicted to the Food Network, so cooking shows are my new crack. I also like to cook and experiment with recipes. I’m not very outdoorsy, but I do enjoy white water rafting and hiking.
I went to Messiah College, up near Harrisburg, PA. Tiny school. Very religious, which probably explains why I write about vampires, shapeshifters, and chicks who come back from the dead. :-p

I’d come back as someone already close to me so I could use them to say goodbye to family and friends and finish up things before moving on. The only problem is that the person I pick I wouldn’t get to talk to…. so maybe I should choose my crazy aunt or my second cousins
hehe

Hi Kelly,
So, my question is why are you starving and sleep depriving poor Evy?
Finished “As Lie The Dead” yesterday and loved it. One complaint I have is that Evy never seems to get to eat or sleep. Something always happens to turn her off the food or interrupts her before she eats and the only time she gets to sleep is if she’s knocked out or sick. It kind of made me tired and hungry. Also, she and Wyatt get interrupted WAY too often!
I personally love to read a book knowing that is part of a series so I don’t agree that posting the release date ahead of time detracted at all from my enjoyment of the book.
As to your questions, I have never really thought about inhabiting another person’s body and some of the altruistic answers above sound nice but…being a woman, if I inhabited someone, I’d want it to be a man. The reason is that I just don’t understand how they think and I’d really like to know what is going on in their minds most of the time. It would probably be a real eye-opener!
I’m glad to hear you are planning on writing 6-7 books in this series because I really enjoy them. Let’s hope your publisher agrees.
Thanks for the great books and I can’t wait for the next one,
Beth (Texas-USA)

LOL! I’m not food/sleep depriving Evy out of sheer meanness. The stories she’s in just often happen so quickly that it’s difficult to work in regular naps/meals. Don’t worry, that was always one of my complaints while watching “24″ on FOX. Hehe.
On one hand, sleeping and eating are kind of boring daily activities. On the other hand, look what NINE AND A HALF WEEKS did for eating food. *grin*

Answer: I’d have to pass on the old inhabit someone else’s body for three days. I just don’t think I’d enjoy it and can’t imagine a reason to take over someone’s body except maybe to impersonate them and have them give all their money to me
Thanks for the fun guest blog!

I think inhabiting Angelina Jolie’s body for 3 days would be kind of fun. She leads a very interesting life
I wouldn’t do anything over the top, I would just try to live live her life just to see what it is like.

Hi Kelly. Welcome to BBB! I am so sorry that it has taken me so long et over here.
Very cool question you have posed, but dang — I really have no idea. Maybe it would be of use to assume the identity of some ridiculous politician but have them make sense for three days.
Or, perhaps being able to go back and red things in my own life would be nice.
Kelly, what do you enjoy doing for relaxation?
( I did RSVP).
[Reply]
LOL @ the politician making sense. Ha! A feat of magic, indeed.
Relaxation - reading in a bubble bath, I love to cook and play with recipes, taking walks to unwind. I keep saying I’ll start yoga, but we’ll see….
