The boiling-hot duo of Max Savoie and Charlotte Caissie from Masked by Moonlight return in the second book of their trilogy, and the thrill-ride just keeps getting better.

Hot off his ascension to the top of the organized New Orleans crime empire, Max has a whirlwind in store for him as he tries to balance everything in his contradictory life: earning the trust of the police officer whom he loves, managing a shady underworld on the knife’s edge of legality, and acting as leader for the local pack of shapeshifters. When a pair of murders leaves him as a primary suspect, it threatens to strain his relationship with Caissie, and the only way he can put all of their fears to rest is by tracking down the real killer. A new player’s arrival on the scene, however, might be just the rogue element needed to ruin everything he and Charlotte have tried to accomplish, yet is the key to Max’s past - and future.

I absolutely love these books. The plots are so strong, and it’s one of a rare breed of romances where the relationship between the leads is inextricably linked to the plot, and both elements feed off one another for an explosive combination. The detailed backstories at play make everything click together wonderfully. These books are intoxicating blends of the best elements that both paranormal romances and hardcore thrillers have to offer.

The combination of chemistry and conflict between the romantic leads is powerful, three-dimensional, and intense. Both Savoie and Caissie are possessed by undeniably strong emotions for each other, but the characters are true to themselves in spite of this; both have alpha personalities which are able to both clash and complement one another. The romance itself is outstanding, with the character development surrounding it equally so. I have not seen such exquisite attention paid to the perspective and development of a hero in a very long time; Chased by Moonlight follows the progression of Savoie from a silent enforcer to a leader in his own right, and it’s gripping every step of the way.

Backed with a perfect setting - the steamy side of New Orleans that’s just sordid enough to be fascinating and so close to reality that the reader can easily picture it - this novel has all of the best elements of scorchingly hot urban fantasy. It has great setup for a new book by opening the door into a completely different world while wrapping enough plot elements established in its predecessor to be satisfying.

This series is a must read; I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book.
