A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the the great prize being offered up. The contest runs until 3:00 pm Eastern time tomorrow to give our east coast and international readers a chance to participate.

NOTE: this is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 8:00 am PST. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and comments.

Interview:

Hi Jennifer!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Jennifer’s latest release Eternal Seduction.

BBB: What do you find the most challenging aspect of writing?

JT: Learning to stop when I’m ahead. I’m the kind of writer who will go back over chapters and change little things here, tweak other sentences there. I’m a perfectionist at heart, so it’s very hard for me to tag a filename with FINAL and leave it alone. It usually takes my husband or my mom reading me the riot act to break through the perfectionist haze and make me realize I’m being an unruly snot. But I love them for it!

BBB: What is the most rewarding aspect of writing for you?

JT: Hearing from my readers. I love hearing from all the different people who’ve enjoyed Eternal Seduction, be they family, friends or fans. I have bad days just like everyone else, and when those days happen sometimes I’ll go back through reader e-mails/guestbook entries and it helps me refocus. Helps me remember there are others who want to play in my world as much as I do. I think that’s why I say thank you so much in my blog. Selling books definitely motivates me, but it’s the comments and notes from my readers that keep me going when I want to toss my laptop out the window.

I also get a huge kick out of reading comments where my characters are referred to in the same context as someone you might meet on the street. There’s no greater feeling of satisfaction for me than hearing someone talk about Odin as though he might sit down next to them at any moment. If the characters have come to life in a reader’s eyes or heart…well, it doesn’t get any better than that!

BBB: What or who was your muse that got you started writing?

JT: The title of “Muse” goes to three people. My mom, because there isn’t a weekend I can remember when I was a kid that she didn’t have a Red Silhouette novel in her hands. Her love of reading made me want to read, which inevitably lead to my love of writing. My husband, because not only is he my pillar of stability, he made me promise once I started writing that I wouldn’t stop until it took me somewhere. And Sherrilyn Kenyon, because after reading Night Play, I was so enthralled with the world she created, I wondered if I could make someone else feel that way about my own. If it wasn’t for all three of them, I’m not sure I’d be doing this interview right now!

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle or the Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

JT: In terms of the Kindle, I don’t think there really are any yet. Most of the portable readers currently on the market are too expensive for the majority of consumers. I think in a few years when they’ve mastered the technology and the prices come down to something a little more reasonable, then you’ll see benefits to the environment. Less paper means more trees. Trees are good. Unless, of course, your name is Will Scarlet. Rumor has it he hates trees.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

JT: I know that I’ve sold twice as many eBooks of Eternal Seduction as I have print. So for me, the impact is definitely positive. And really, I think it’s positive all the way around. A lot of great authors who’ve been turned away by traditional publishers are finding very happy homes with e-publishers. That’s a win for everyone. The authors, who now have a market and home for their work when they may not have otherwise. The publishers, who are getting top notch authors to build their business on and around. And the readers, who literally have thousands of wonderful books available to them 24 hours a day – and they don’t even have to leave the house to go shopping!

BBB: Who among your character families is your favorite and why?

JT: Hmmm. If we’re talking about the families spawned by the six Original vampires, I’d have to say it’s a tie between the Mystics and the Warriors. The Mystics because their powers are off the charts and they can make almost anything happen if they really put their mind to it. The Warriors because they’re all heart and passion. They prize loyalty above all else, and will fight to the death for anything and anyone they care about.

If we’re talking about individual family bloodlines, I’d have to say it’s a tie between the Nelek family and the Black family. The Neleks because I love writing Stefan and his kids. They span such a wide range of age and personalities, they always keep me guessing. The Blacks because Justin holds a very, very special place in my heart. He’s one of the strongest, most confident characters I have – but at the same time he’s so lost and trapped in his own guilt.

BBB: Are Servios ever allowed to become a vampire or are they always a servant?

JT: Truthfully, it all depends on their Master. Some vampires won’t make someone a Child unless they’ve served as a Servio for a specific and usually extended period of time. Think of it almost like an internship, where you learn all the rules and come out more prepared to finally take the big step into true immortality. Other vampires will tell you, “Once a servant, always a servant.” They see Servios as second class citizens and can’t imagine one of them actually earning fangs, let alone passing their curse to one of them.

Believe it or not, the decision to turn a Servio into a Child gets more complicated the older a vampire is. If you’re a 10,000 year old vampire, and your personal Servio has been with you most of that time, chances are they’re more of a friend than a servant. No doubt you’ve come to depend on them during the day, will most likely listen to their council for better or worse, and you might even love them in some ways (and/or vice versa). Turning that beloved friend into a vampire can be a risky gambit. Vampires are constantly in competition with each other for food, power and prestige. Is it really a good idea to put someone who knows you so well on even ground with you? What if the new relationship between Sire and Child sours? Your former Servio, now Child, knows your greatest secrets…and more importantly, they probably know when and where you sleep.

So, is it physiologically possible for a Servio to be turned into a vampire? Yes, absolutely. Is it necessarily a good idea to allow it…maybe, maybe not.

BBB: Can you tell us how many books are planned after Eternal Seduction and when we can expect them? Or what your next releases will be if they are stand alone titles?

JT: As it stands, I have about 13 books and a few novellas planned for the Eternal Series. My goal is to release them no more than 6 months apart. Books 2, 3 and 4 are written and going through final revisions, and I’m writing book 5 (Odin’s Book!) on the in between. I promised myself I’d keep the series going as long as there’s interest, and as long as I never reach a point where I feel like I’m writing the same story over and over. If that happens, I’ll write the last book and move on to something else.

BBB: Succubus or Vampire. Which would you choose to be and why?

JT: Definitely a vampire. Although, in my world, the most effective way for a vampire to hide their feeding is to bite their prey during orgasm…so I suppose you get the best of both worlds! As for why, I think it’s because I’m strangely comfortable with the idea of never seeing the sun again and sleeping all day.

BBB: How would you describe the writing style in the Eternal Seduction? Is it serious dark paranormal or a cross between Urban Fantasy and paranormal or something else entirely?

JT: Personally, I’m still trying to figure out exactly what Urban Fantasy is. I’ve been told it’s essentially a paranormal romance novel where the romance takes a back seat and the fate of the world is always at stake, usually resting in the hands of the protagonists. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of series where the fate of the planet is hanging in the balance in every single novel. I’m all for putting a character’s personal world in jeopardy, but I don’t think every book needs an Earth shattering battle sequence.

So, with all that in mind, I’d say Eternal Seduction is Dark Paranormal Romance with mild horror elements. I know there’s been a big trend lately to stray away from the more romantic aspects of vampire/paranormal novels, but I don’t intend to follow that curve. Call me a rule breaker, but I really enjoy writing romance and I love the complexities that particular emotion brings out in my characters, ancient or otherwise. Will there be a little sarcasm and ass-kickery to go along with all the love? Of course, but only when pertinent to the story and characters.

As for serious, there are certainly moments in my novels when things take a more serious turn but I wouldn’t necessarily choose that word to describe my series. Dark? Definitely. I’m not sure I could write a novel that didn’t have some horror elements in it. I mean, we’re talking vampires here, some of whom are truly ancient. They prey on the very species they once were a part of. Now, that’s not to say I don’t have my good guys, but you’re not going to find any of my vampires frolicking in a sunlit field of poppies. :)

Side note: Every time someone uses the term Urban Fantasy…I automatically think of Marvin the Martian. “Where’s the ka-boom? The earth shattering KA-BOOM?!?”

BBB: How do you keep track of your characters and world building?

JT: Right now, it’s all in my head. I keep telling myself that I’m going to go buy one of those fancy little notebooks with the fabric cover then write all the rules and whatnot down, but whenever I actually make it to the store I always get sidetracked. And usually it’s because of something shiny or containing dark chocolate.

BBB: What is your favorite paranormal fiction book of all time?

JT: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. I read it for the first time back in 5th grade, and to this day, I’m still fascinated by the idea of the 4th dimension.

BBB: What do you like to do in between all the time you spend writing?

JT: I like to spend time with my daughter and my Husband. We’re feeling the economic crunch just like the rest of the country, so we’ve been staying home a lot and having Call of Duty 4 tournaments (my husband couldn’t live without his X-Box). I know COD4 is probably not the best video game for a 9 year old girl, but there’s something seriously funny about watching her use her infamous brute force machine gun attack, then hearing her talk smack to her Dad.

I also like to watch movies, read, and listen to music. Music is a huge part of my life, and there aren’t many moments in the day where there isn’t music playing somewhere in my apartment.

BBB: What made you decide to self publish instead of go with an e-pub or print publisher? Are you glad you did? Would you consider making the move over and letting somebody else do it all?

JT: To be completely honest, I chose to self publish because I couldn’t find an agent who wanted my series. I ran into a lot of opposition concerning Logan Ellis (the heroine in Eternal Seduction) because she starts out as a homeless drug addict. Apparently that concept pushed the bounds of Dark Paranormal a little too far for them. :) I was given the option a few times to change those elements and resubmit, but after a lot of thought I decided against it. Not because I was trying to be difficult, but more because I felt those aspects were very important to Logan’s character. I’m all about compromise, but removing Logan’s addiction and homeless status would have changed who she is and her outlook on the world, which inevitably would’ve changed the way Kerestyan saw her, and in turn changed the entire novel. Plus, considering the issues they had with the darker nature of Eternal Seduction, I could almost envision the look of horror on their face if they saw what happened in the next book.

Am I glad I self published? Yes. If nothing else, I learned firsthand about the amount of work that really goes into preparing a book for publication. The editing, proofreading, formatting, cover design, proofing and general hair-pulling-out feeling you get when that one line just won’t go where you want it to. Then you have the marketing and promotion. Self publishing has been a very trying road to walk at times, but getting a 5 Tombstone review and hearing from all the people who’ve enjoyed the first book…makes it all worth it!

Would I consider making the move over and letting someone else do it all? Gladly! Know anyone who’s interested?? :D

BBB: Do you plan on having the twins battle each other?

JT: Believe me when I tell you – they already are…

BBB: Will Odin get his own book or Drake??

JT: Drake’s book, Eternal Hearts, is next in line with a scheduled release date of May 1, 2009. Odin’s book, Eternal Embers, is book number 5, but you get to meet his woman in book 4, Eternal Desires.

BBB: What did you do before you became a writer? Do you write full time?

JT: I’ve been a cashier, a press operator at a dry cleaner, a food court attendant, an assembler at a chemical factory, a data entry operator, a recruiting specialist, a human resources assistant, a tattoo artist, a payroll clerk, an administrative assistant, a distribution clerk, and an inside sales representative…in that order!

I became a serious writer in between the last two. I do write full time now, but only because my husband, the awesome man he is, works a standard 48 hour week to give me this opportunity.

BBB: Why does Logan brush her teeth so much?

JT: LOL! For her, it’s a somewhat twisted but comforting affirmation of survival. Most people brush their teeth first thing after they wake up, to most, it’s an absolute necessity. So if she lives to brush her teeth that day and has the means to do so, she knows her life could be a lot worse.

BBB: Katie who reviewed your amazing book has one big question she would like to know but at the same time wouldn’t want to know, is Drake the vampire/werewolf?

JT: Is Drake a vampire/werewolf? Yes. Is he *THE* vampire/werewolf…you’ll have to read his book to find out.

What?!? You didn’t think I could just give that one away…did you?

BBB: Do you have any pearls of wisdom you would like to share with our readers here today?

JT: The sarcastic side of me says: Don’t eat yellow snow. But the other side says: Go ahead, a little dog pee never killed anyone. :D

Jennifer, thank you again for being here today, it has been fun!! Readers be SURE to check out Jennifer’s website here:

    Hi Jennifer! Welcome to BBB.

My question is why paranormal? What drew you to want to write in that genre as opposed to any other?

(rach-posted to three yahoo groups and twittered)

I just wanted to say thank you to Rachel and the BittenbyBooks staff for having me here today, and for the awesome review!!

    THANK YOU! :)

Hi, I read what Eternal Seduction was about and am really interested to read it, only one problem, I can’t seem to buy in the UK. Will it be realeased over here?

    Andrea

    Hi Virginia -

I chose paranormal because I’ve always loved the legend of vampires. And I think being able to create my own world featuring them, and a few other supernatural species, was really what sealed the deal for me. Plus, being able to rewrite a little history is always fun, and paranormal is one of the genres that lets you do that. :)

  5. Comment by Darby Lohrding — December 8, 2008 @ 9:33 am

    Jennifer,
For your story plots do you use history or tv shows, for your guideline? One writer I read, stated she got her plot idea from watching CSI and had the thought, what if the CSI team was made up of Vampires.
Thank you for your time and the nice interview!

    Hi Jennifer,
I do the same thing when I write. Usually I’ll read the last chapter before I start writing. Of course I have to make changes. For me it is like the Texas Two Step. Two steps forward, one step back, only sometimes I never get anywhere new. I would also like to know why you write paranormal. I’ll be interested in your response. This was a very nice interview by the way.

    Hi Andrea -

Unfortunately, right now, the US Amazon website is the only Amazon site that has Eternal Seduction. Because I’m self published, getting international distribution is a lenghty and involved process that I’m still wading through.

What you can do in the meantime (and anyone else who’s international), is drop an e-mail to tanaATdarknesswithinnovelsDOTcom (replace the AT and DOT with the @ and .) and let her know where you are, and we’ll work something out so the shipping doesn’t drain your budget.

You can also order through Amazon.com, but I’ve been told the international shipping rate is pretty stiff.

And, of course, there are always the eBook options, you can get a Kindle version from Amazon.com, a PDF from my website, or an electronic version from MobiPocket.com. MobiPocket has free software that suits not only computers but a bunch of different PDA’s and other devices.

    I hope those options help!

Thanks Jennifer that helps alot. I love my vampires and am always on the hunt for authors I haven’t read before. I wish you every sucsess with the series and thanks again.

Hey Jennifer! Thanks so much for being here. I can’t wait to get my copy of ES!

And, there is NO WAY I am eating yellow snow. LOL Just sayin’

  10. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 9:57 am

    Hi Darby -

I get my ideas from all over the place. Definitely from history. I’ve actually rewritten a lot of history and put vampires behind some major historical events while fleshing out my characters. In Eternal Seduction, you find out that Rome was destroyed by an angry vampire! :)

I have to admit I don’t watch a lot of TV (I don’t have cable) but my husband loves CSI. I think my character, Vouclade, has some of Gill Grisom’s characteristics. That ultra genius, but somewhat quirky demeanor.

I ask myself “What if” vampire questions all the time. Like, what if a vampire was a night clerk at a gas station and someone came in to rob them? I often wonder when I’m waiting for my daughter to get out of school (I have to pick her up every day), what if a Mom got turned into a vampire, and she has a school age child and couldn’t pick them up every day? How would you go about dealing with something like that?

Well, now that I’ve rambled on…I suppose my answer to your question is, yes. TV and history sometimes have a great infulence on my plots. :)

  11. Comment by Katie — December 8, 2008 @ 9:58 am

    Jennifer ~

I think it was a great decision to keep Logan as a drug addict. When I first started reading it I thought it would be kind of heavy. I was wrong and it fit her and the storyline.

So Drake isnt the ONE, huh? I knew you wouldnt answer that and I hoped you wouldnt either. I know that makes no sense at all. :)

Good luck with the rest of series!

    Katie

Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today :)

What types of music do you listen to? do you ever find yourself drawn for some inexplicable reason towards certain songs as you write? and if so, what are they?

  13. Comment by Nicole Hicks — December 8, 2008 @ 9:59 am

Wow thanks for coming Jennifer! Glad to have you here and wonderful prizes! I love the fact that you are releasing your books in 6 month intervals! But why did you chose 6 months? And if you could chose vampire, werewolf, or hybrid which would you chose?

    Hi Jo -

Congrats on your Covey Award! Now, you can’t say you’re a writer and not tell everyone what you write! :) Feel free to pimp yourself…I’m all about spreading the author love!

(Go click on Jo’s name and check out her books!)

I’m with you on the Texas Two Step. I can’t leave anything alone. And I know we all get told you should just write the draft, THEN go back and change things…but I can’t do it. So now I just tell everyone who asks, do what works for you!

Other than my love of vamps, and wanting to mess with history…I can’t say for sure what made me want to write paranormal. I started writing back in 2004, before vamps were all the rage…and I think the key for me was that vampires were want I *wanted* to write about. I didn’t really understand market trends or anything back then, I just wanted to have fun. :)

  15. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 10:20 am

    LOL Rachel -

It’s so funny. I was sitting here in my living room, much like I am right now, and agonizing over what my pearl of wisdom should be. I kept telling my hubby it HAS to be something good…like: Keep looking. Be it for that special person, your dreams, or your car keys…eventually they’ll turn up.

But when I read that little ditty to him, he laughed at me. Like all out, grabbed his stomach and doubled over, laughed. He told me it was cheesy and so not me, and then asked me what I really wanted to say. So I told him the sarcastic side of me wants to say, don’t eat yellow snow. To which he reminded me that I’m really all sarcasm the majority of the time, so I should just be me. And the rest is yellow snow history! :P

  16. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 10:33 am

    Hi Katie -

I’m glad you approve of Logan! :) Like I said, and I think you can back me up, if Logan wasn’t a homeless addict…it would’ve changed everything.

I couldn’t answer about Drake…and, trust me, it makes all the sense in the world. Everyone needs a little something to look forward to. But believe me, I wanted to answer your question. My biggest flaw as an author is that I always want to spoil my own books. And usually will, unless there’s someone there to stop me! LOL

  17. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 10:50 am

    Hi Sarai -

I listen to ALL kinds of music. Right now, I’m listening to Bang! Bang! by The Knux, but the song before that was Right Here by Staind…and next up is Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce.

When I was younger, my Dad’s days off were always Wednesday and Thursday (he worked for the railroad). And on Wednesdays he’d cook all morning long and listen to Motown. So I have a very healthy love for the Temptations and the “Golden Oldies”. But my Mom loves country. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton singing Islands in the Stream, is something I heard a lot, too!
Chad, my husband, loves all things metal. Metallica, Drowning Pool, Coal Chamber, etc.

So I have a fairly eclectic taste for my age, which is only 30. And 30 is not old, I don’t care what anyone says! :)

While I was writing Eternal Seduction, I kept coming back to Save Me by Shinedown, which turned out to be Logan’s song. Whenever I needed to go to my “Logan place” but for some reason couldn’t get there…that song pulled me right in.

And there are a few songs that I always go back to, no matter the book, to help me with certain scenes. Dig by Mudvayne is what I use for combat scenes. Fade Into You by Mazzy Star helps me through intense emotional scenes. And I Love You, I’ll Kill You by Enigma goes on when it’s time for the characters to get it on. :)

Wow a Wrinkle in Time takes me back! Jen I cannot wait for the second book in the ETERNAL SEDUCTION series. Are you working on any other projects at this time?

  19. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 11:06 am

    Hi Nicole -

I chose every 6 months to try to keep myself ahead of the game. Right now, books 2-4 are undergoing final revisions, so I’m feeling really good about the 6 month time frame. More than anything, I wanted to give myself some breathing room, and give all my readers a schedule they could bank on. As a reader myself, I get bummed when a book I’m looking forward to reading gets pushed back, so I don’t want anyone else to feel that way because of me. :)

As it stands now, if I run into trouble with Odin’s book and it takes me a month or so longer to finish than I expect, it won’t upset the release schedule. And in turn, that means I won’t be running around like a mad woman, freaking out about the book not releasing when it should. Which I would do, OH, YES - I would freak out and probably scream like a howler monkey in the process. :D

As for vampire, werewolf or hybrid…I’m sticking with vampire. My hybrids have issues, none of which I’d want for myself. :)

Great inteview and contest. I haven’t read your book yet but I have added it to my tbb list, it sounds very interesting.
If you weren’t writing about Vampires and Werewolves what would you be writing about?
Whats your favorite things to do to relax besides COD4?

I posted this contest on Twitter and Facebook(twitter name-bbricke, Facebook name is my full name) I am already friend with you on both sites.

I just realized I’ve been so caught up in anwering the questions, I’ve forgotten to say THANK YOU. Thank you to everyone for the great questions, and for the well wishes and compliments. :)

This is my first real interactive chatty-type-event. So please forgive me if I come off like an interview virgin…because I kinda am. :)

Oh, and I apologize if I get a little long winded, or use a lot of smilies. I’m sure at some point today my Mom will pop in…and you’ll quickly see it’s ALL genetic!

  22. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 11:24 am

Here’s a question for all of you:

What is it you love about reading the paranormal genre? And, what’s your favorite supernatural to read about? (Vampires, werewolves, etc.)

  23. Comment by Nicole Hicks — December 8, 2008 @ 11:32 am

I love to lose myself in the what ifs of impossibilities! ok my spelling stinks thats wht I use spell check! LOL. I go between vamps and werewolves, can’t really chose. I think I like wolves more, I love my chocolate!

    Hi Caden -

I can’t wait for you to read Eternal Hearts! Drake is one of my favorite characters, and I’m so excited to get his story out for everyone. :)

I’m not working on any projects outside of the Eternal series right now. I’m in the middle of writing Odin’s book and working on the first novella, Immortal Passions (Raze’s story), which keeps trying to turn into a full length novel on me. :)

I’ve toyed with the idea of writing a horror/thriller novel, but I’m nervous that if I get too many projects outside the Darkness Within series going, it’ll suffer. So I’m focusing hard on my supernaturals!

  26. Comment by kizzy — December 8, 2008 @ 11:52 am

Hi Jen thanks for being here today. Since I haven’t had the chance, to read your books yet. I am going to ask if you have seen the Twilight movie? If so did you like it?

  27. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 11:59 am

    Hi Breia -

If I wasn’t writing about Vamps and Weres…I’d probably be writing horror/thrillers. My favorite author of all time is Stephen King.

My very first attempt at writing a story, which I did back in 7th grade, was about a babysitter battling a serial killer. Then in
10th grade, me and my best friend at the time, wrote a story about a circus coming to a small town that eventually devolved into demonic clowns and ritual sacrifices. :) So horror is definitely something that appeals to me. LOL

Besides COD4, I like to read to and with my daughter. I take a lot of pride in knowing she’s inerited my imagination. She’s the kind of kid who when I used make up a bedtime stories for her, she’d interact with the characters in the story. So it became more of a role-playing experience with her than just a story. Almost a choose-your-own adventure of sorts.

I also like to go out with my friends, but I’m at that odd place in my life where I have a family and most of my friends are still single. So they’ll call and want my husband and I to go out to a bar at 11 pm, and I’m yawning and wondering who’s going to watch the Heathen?

    Jennifer -

You serie sounds very interesting. I know you picked your favorite characters but I have 2 additional questions along those lines.

    1) If you had to switch lives with one of your character (but the outside world would see you still)- who would you like playing you?

    2) Stuck on a dessert island who (character wise)would you take and why?

  29. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 12:01 pm

Nicole, you’re in luck. Eternal Hearts has vampires, werewolves and hybrids! :)

    Quick note:

For anyone who hasn’t read Eternal Seduction yet, you can read the first 3 chapters for free on my website. Considering you can’t just stop at a bookstore and peruse it, I thought it only fair to put enough out there for you to decide if it’s your cup of tea or not.

  31. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 12:15 pm

    Hi Kizzy -

I haven’t seen the Twilight movie, but I did read the book. It took me a little bit to get into it, but that’s only because I have a darker view of vampires. The whole sparkling like a diamond in the sun kind of threw me for a loop. :) But overall, I enjoyed it. It was definitey a different take on the whole vampire myth, and I give Stephenie Meyer all the credit in the world for that. When my daughter is a little older and wiser, I’d certainly give it to her as a present! She loves vampires, too.

  32. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 12:33 pm

    Hi Marnie -

Wow! Those are 2 great questions. Hmmmm…

In terms of who I’d want to play me, if we’re going for characters who most resemble some of my own personality traits, it’s a tie between Logan and Dahalia. Although I’ve never had a drug addiction or really been homeless, I have to admit I have a darker outlook on the world similar to Logan. And Dahalia is a very cautious and careful with the people she lets get close to her, which is a trait I can identify with.

Now, if we’re just going for all out fun, I want Stefan Nelek to play me. Because then I’d almost always be right, and even if I wasn’t, I could come up with an argument that makes me sound right. :) And, no doubt, my demeanor would be scary enough that even if I really wasn’t right, no one would argue!

If I was stuck on a desert island, I would take Justin Black with me. Why? Because he won’t burn up in the sun, which is always a bonus, he’d look really, really good without a shirt on…and because he’s old enough to remember how to make fire by banging rocks together. :)

  33. Comment by Rachel — December 8, 2008 @ 12:44 pm

    Hey Jen!

I think my favorite reason for reading paranormal fiction is that on some odd level I relate to it better. LOL

Kind of like trading the horrors of our own world we live in everyday and seeing it through a different lens so to speak. It is a twisted kind of escape for me I suppose. But better than sitting around watching the news where your neighbor kills his kids or worse. (not that there is much worse than that).

I can deal with a vampire killing people because they are supposed to be “monsters”.

Uh, I need therapy now. LOL

  34. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 12:57 pm

I’ll be back in a little bit. I have to go pick the kiddie up from school. :)

And Rachel, in terms of therapy, I’ll go with you. Maybe we can get a group rate!

I remember both the stories that you mentioned writing - in the 7th grade and 10th grade…and of course, I still have them!! :):) LOL :):) You know your Mom..:):)
Thanks sooo much for considering me one of your “muse”..:):) I had always hoped to pass on my love of reading to you and your brothers!! And I’m sooo very proud of you and what you’ve accomplished!! :):) I love you!! :):)
I’d also like to express a very special “Thank You” to everyone here - you’re helping Jen experience a “dream come true”!!! :):) And as her Mom - that’s AWESOME!!!! :):):)

  36. Comment by Willow — December 8, 2008 @ 1:18 pm

I was wondering if you have ever “found” your characters on TV or in real life? As in you see the person and are almost in a state of shock because they’re exactly how you pictured them in your head. Not necessarily an instance where you intentionally based a character off of someone else, but a total random account.

As a wanna-be writer (working on my first novel 55k words so far yay!) I’ve had this experience a few times and I just wanted to know if I’m the only one.

  37. Comment by Rachel — December 8, 2008 @ 1:21 pm

    Hi Jen’s mom!

That is SO awesome I don’t think anybody’s mom has ever shown up to an interview. You have made BBB history, and should get an award in the MOM hall of fame.

Too cool! You have a very talented, funny and kind daughter. Great job!

  38. Comment by Lisa Lane — December 8, 2008 @ 2:03 pm

I see that you’re self-published. What did you find to be the most beneficial marketing moves, for you? What would you say was the hardest part about working PR, without a company to back you?

  39. Comment by Tana — December 8, 2008 @ 2:12 pm

    Hi! Rachel, :)

    Oh my goodness!! :) ;) Thanks sooo much!! :) :) Wow…BBB History…how cool!! :)

I’m surprised no other Mom has popped in to an interview - I really enjoy being involved in Jen’s writing career, I think I’m her biggest fan!! :) :) I can’t tell you how exciting it was to finally have a hardcopy book of one of Jen’s stories in my hands!! :) :)

And trust me…her other stories are AWESOME too!! :) :)

Thanks, Rachel…I think she’s very talented, funny and kind too!! :) :) She does have a wicked sense of humor - and about the sarcastic “yellow snow” comment - she gets that from her Dad!!! :) :) :) LOL :) :)

  40. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 2:22 pm

Hi, Mom. :) LOL. You know, 12 years ago I’d be so completely embarassed right now that I wouldn’t know what to do with myself, but I have to say that my Mom has been a huge part of my support system. So her stopping by today is more than OK by me. Besides, she’s also an internet and romance novel junkie. And everyone should know, she reads Sherrilyn Kenyon, too! She’s also my editor and customer service department.

And, last but not least, you can see where the bad smiley habit comes from. I told you it was genetic!

Thanks, Mom. For not only being my editor, sounding board and occasional whip-cracker, but just for being the wonderful woman you are. :)

  41. Comment by Nicole Hicks — December 8, 2008 @ 2:32 pm

“stripper loving old lady” OMG ROFL I laughed so hard my 3 year old come running- “Mama alright?” Just from that one line I had tears running! Wonderful, absolutely wonderful! *crosses fingers* oh my I have to pray to win now! and your Mom is just too sweet to come and show her support for you! You are very lucky to have a great talent and loving family! I just have to ask where did you get the idea for Logan? It’s a wonderfully unique take!

  42. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 2:32 pm

    Hi Willow -

YES!! That has happened to me…and I swear I about turned into a giggling little school girl.

I saw a guy in the supermarket once who was probably 6′8″, built really well, and had long black hair. He also had one of those really nice, strong jawlines. YUM! And the minute I saw him, all I could think of was Drake. He even had the tribal tattoos down his arms. I stood there staring at him like an idiot for probably a full minute before my daughter asked me why I stopped and started shaking the grocery list in my face. :)

And seriously, CONGRATS a million times on those 55,000 words!! I always say no one is a wannabe writer. The minute you put those words on paper/screen, you are a writer. You just wannabe published! :)

  43. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 3:12 pm

    Hi Lisa -

First, let me say congrats on your new release, The Darkness and the Night: Blood and Coffee, coming out on 12/21 from Ravenous Romance. :D (Like I said earlier, I’m all about sharing!)

I think the best marketing move I made was to start my website early. My site has actually been around since 2004, when I really started to think in the direction of seriously writing and publishing my series. Most of the fans and friends I made back then are still with me now. I lovingly refer to them as my “Originals”. They were essentially my beta readers, before I knew what that term meant. I’d post chapters and they’d stop by every night or so to read them and tell me what they thought. Having input from people who didn’t know me personally (no offense, Mom!), and didn’t have to be nice, really helped me grow as a writer.

The hardest part of working PR without a company behind me, is just getting my name and book out there. I’m really not a HEY! LOOK AT ME kind of person, so it’s been difficult for me to hit all the romance Yahoo! groups and start posting.

Yahoo! Groups are a great venue for new authors to get their names out there. Also, IWOFA (Infinite Worlds of Fantasty Authors - http://www.iwofa.net) is a sci-fi/paranormal author group I joined recently, and they’ve been a huge wellspring of knowledge for me. There are some truly awesome writers there, some of whom have been in the business for a long time.

Then you have kicka$$ review sites like BBB, who take the time to write honest reviews and offer opportunities for interviews. I can honestly say, with 100% certainty, getting my book reviewed here, among other places, has made a better impact than any other marketing strategy I’ve found. And getting reviews when your self-published or pubbed by a small e-press, isn’t an easy task. A lot of places won’t give you a shot unless there’s a name behind you.

So let me just say again, to Rachel and her BBB’ers, thank you for your willingness to review ES and take a chance on a newbie author!

I hope my laundry list answers your questions, Lisa. And GOOD LUCK with your novel!! It looks like a great vampire tale. :)

  44. Comment by Willow — December 8, 2008 @ 3:16 pm

I know exactly what you mean! I’ve had a new television series completely ruined for me because the main character looks exactly like the villain in my book. My husband heard me gasp and freeze up as soon as the opening credits started, and kept asking what was wrong, lol. (I’m horrible about lol’s by the way. They’re my “smiley’s” lol)

Once I realized that I couldn’t watch the show anymore, I Google’d the actor and realized that I’ve never seen anything he’s been in before either. It completely creeped me out. It really sucks to have a show that my husband seems to think is decent enough ruined because I can’t separate the world and characters that I’ve created from real life…

Oh well… Thanks for the kind words and encouragement! Congrats again on your successes and good luck with the rest of your series!

  45. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 3:26 pm

Oh, what’s this? We have another author with us today, too. Ms. Caden Leigh. And it would appear she has a book set to release in May of 2009, The Silver Septapgram, from Lyrical Press. :D

I’ll gladly out you all before the day is done! :) And better yet, feel free to out yourselves. Drop your website address in at the end of your questions or comments so others can learn about you, too!

  46. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 3:37 pm

LOL Nicole, “stripper loving old lady” is probably one of my favorite lines in the book, too.

I actually got the idea for Logan while I was at the bookstore. I was perusing the different romance novels out, and after looking at 8 different books, I realized all the heroines were doctors, lawyers, marketing pros, or part of some other well paying profession.

Then I had a “What if…” moment. I asked myself what if the heroine wasn’t a professional, what if she didn’t have a job? What if she was homeless? Which spiraled right into, how does she survive? What does she do to get money? Wow, she’s gonna be really skinny if she doesn’t eat, and she’s gonna be dirty if she doesn’t have a home. And damn, she’s probably not going to have a very friendly outlook on the world considering the way most homeless people are treated. But, oooh, what if she has a darker outlook on the world than the vampire she runs into? Wouldn’t that just flip the script on mainstream vampire romance?

Yeah, so that’s how Logan was born. :)

  47. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 3:55 pm

Willow, I know what you mean about separating your characters from real life. There are times when I talk about my characters, when I actually get mad at what they’re doing or saying in a chapter, and my husband looks at me like I’ve lost it.

  48. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 3:57 pm

    So here’s a weird question:

When you take your shoes off, do you untie them first or just kick them off?

Supposedly, your answer says a lot about your personality. I’ll tell you exactly what a little later, but I have to say I always kick my shoes off. :)

  49. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 4:00 pm

And here’s one more question, back to the paranormal side of things.

Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you ever seen one?

I really do believe in ghosts, but I’ve never seen one. I keep telling my husband we need to go stay in a haunted inn or hotel so I can have a ghost encounter.

  50. Comment by Willow — December 8, 2008 @ 4:09 pm

Weird Question #1: I always kick my shoes off. I’m usually lugging around a cranky toddler so it’s just quicker that way.

Weird Question #2: I definitely believe in ghosts. I’d love to go on a call with the TAPS team from Ghost Hunters someday. Some of the stuff they get to see first-hand is just amazing!

    Hi Jen

Great interview, you are doing awesome for an interview virgin….lol

As one of the Originals who has been with Jen since the beginning I would like to add my thanks to all the people who have posted great questions and comments for Jen, she thrives on them.

Since I don’t really have a question I will ask this……are we ever going to do characters chats again and who was your favorite character visiting us in chat? I have to say for myself it was probably Crypt since he is so hilarious and we (I) had the most fun in chat with.

    Kitty

and btw…I kick off my shoes.

  56. Comment by Willow — December 8, 2008 @ 4:41 pm

Until someday when I can afford to buy a Kindle, I’ll have to stick with my trusty paper books.

I’m torn with which I’d prefer in the long run though. I love holding and smelling a book, but I’m also a techy geek who kind of likes the planet being healthy and all…

Maybe they can create a little fan that lets out the smell of paper and ink on the kindle, lol!

  57. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 4:57 pm

Ahhh, the days of Dittos. Wow. Now I’m feeling my all of my 30 years, especially since I just asked my daughter if she knew what a ditto was, and she said, “Isn’t that some weird bird that went extinct?” LOL

  58. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 5:01 pm

    Hi Kitty -

You would call me out on national TV (or the internet’s version thereof) to ask me about character chats, wouldn’t you? :P

Maybe someday, Kitty. Maybe someday. :)

I’d have to agree with Crypt being my favorite chatter. He’s always fun!

  59. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 5:04 pm

I’m pretty sure if I had a Kindle, my MIL would steal it. She’s wanted one ever since Oprah told her she should have one. :)

But really, if I had a Kindle I’d never get anything done. It’s the same reason why I don’t have cable. I’m easily distracted.

  60. Comment by Kitty — December 8, 2008 @ 5:11 pm

Of course I would Jen (snicker)………we might get more traffic on the site if there is the possibility that newbies might get to “chat” with some of the characters and the forums will be more active again.

  61. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 5:33 pm

WOOHOO!!!!! *Jumping up and down is me!* It’s my very humbled pleasure to share some news with everyone here. Exactly one minute ago (ok, maybe a little more), Eternal Seduction officially sold over 100 e-copies on MobiPocket!! And it happened in only 38 days!

Sorry. :) One of the bonuses, but oh so nerve wracking parts of being self published, is that I can see my real-time sales. And they say that a self published author rarely sells more than 100 copies of a book over the entire life of the novel. So knowing that I exceeded the 100 mark in e-book copies alone, makes me stupid giddy. :)

A BIG, SLOPPY THANK YOU to everyone who’s purchased a copy. I will love you forever, just don’t tell my husband. :)

  62. Comment by Kitty — December 8, 2008 @ 5:41 pm

    Congrats Jen……you deserve it.

  63. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 5:43 pm

Okay, so I figure it’s time to tell you what your shoes mean.

If you kick off your shoes, you’re an instant gratification type of person. You want what you want, and you want it now. You’re someone who when out and about, and hungry, will go hit up the fast food place instead of a sit down restaurant (or going home to cook!).

If you untie your shoes, you’re a methodical, if not calculating individual. You may want what you want, but you’re willing to wait to get it. You enjoy the journey as much as the destination, and tend to be very patient.

Rachel - I don’t know what to tell you, other than I am so writing a character who owns no shoes that need to be tied. And when the vampire she finds herself with asks why, she’s going to say, “Because I’m the kind of person who hates wasting time. Now, take your pants off!” LOL

  64. Comment by Willow — December 8, 2008 @ 5:53 pm

Congratulations Jen!!! I’m sure that your success will continue to grow exponentially.

Oh, and LOVE the slip on shoes woman you created, hilarious!

Wow. Shake-n-Bake lives. Shows what I know. :) Now I want pork chops!

  74. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 7:33 pm

    Hi Arlene -

Sadly, I don’t think I’ve ever had any real-life paranormal experiences. I once had a weird moment when I KNOW I set my keys on the kitchen counter, but when I turned around to get the phone, the keys were on the floor in the dining room. That was strange enough. I’d like to think it was a ghost. :)

As for running into someone I had a hard time believing was human…I’ve never personally met her, but something tells me Joan Rivers isn’t human anymore. She scares me.

Logan was perfect! There is no way she could have been so indifferent and irreverent to the existence of vampires had she not lived the life she did. Those publishers are obviously not as smart as they think they are. You are going to be so popular once this series gets around. I blogged about ES this week in a Christmas contest. Hopefully it will bring you an interested reader or two.

Were any of your past jobs 3rd shift? I worked third shift after my second child so that I could be home in the afternoon when the girls got home from school and in the morning to get them to school. After that my internal clock just never wanted to go back to first. I could so totally get into the vampire schedule.

I can’t wait to read the next two books. I won the first one here (THANK YOU BITTENBYBOOKS). I’ll run off and put this interview on my blog. It is relatively un-read but I’ll try to drum up readers for you.

    Hi Crystal -

Thank you so much for blogging about me. :) I’ll take word of mouth recommendations any day. They really are the best kind!

One of my data entry jobs was actually 3rd shift, and I still wonder if my internal clock ever reset. There are times I’ll wake up in the middle of the night, feeling like I got 8 hours of sleep even if I’ve only really gotten 2. So I’m with you, I dig the vampire schedule. Plus, as you can probably see from my picture above, I’m pretty fair skinned, so the sun and I don’t get along anyway. :)

Jen, great interview. I have included the link to the interview on my blog, http://mail8d.blogspot.com/
You know how much I like Eternal Seduction from my comments on your website. I think the best bit of marketing/advertising you did was to post those first chapters on your website. After reading them I just had to buy the e-Book so I could finish it immediately.
Congratulations on your 100+ copies the first month.

    Happy Holidays!!
What genre would you most like to try and write?

  82. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 10:17 pm

Thanks, Sandra! I’m glad to know the chapters are workin’. :) It’s something I plan to do for every book in the series, so hopefully it will keep working!

  83. Comment by Jen Turner — December 8, 2008 @ 10:21 pm

    Hi Lexee -

Happy Holidays to you, too! If I had to pick another genre that I’m not familiar with, I’d have to go with Sci-fi or maybe erotic. I marvel at authors of both. The world building skills needed for a good Sci-fi novel are just amazing. And I tip my hat to all erotica authors, because I’m not sure I could do what they do. I agonize over the sex scenes I write as it is, trying to go into even more detail might just kill me. :)

Okay, I’m checking out for the night. It’s 12:21 AM here in the frozen tundra (AKA - Ohio). I’ll be back in the morning to answer more questions.

Thanks again to everyone who’s commented so far. I very much appreciate it!

    Sleep well. :)

    Great interview!

How is it you create twists in your plot? I’m trying to create some in my story right now and am having trouble with it.

and what made you chose the genre you’re writing?

  87. Comment by Chris J. — December 9, 2008 @ 12:12 am

Thanks BBB, I have found a new author and series!
Jen,Thank you for a Great interview and insights into the world and characters you have created. Drake is already sounding good!
    Vampires and werewolves!!
I am working on writing my first book and I totally agree, the readers seeing the story in their heads and relating to the characters as if they were real would be the Awesomest!! After all if the author can do that for me then I am a dedicated reader of their books. :)
What awesome muses to have and I was wondering if you have ever met Sherilyn? I did a few months ago, while she was talking to the audience she made us all cry.She is an incredible lady.

I posted a blog with your interview here and the contest: http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog

Thanks again and I wish you the best of luck!

    Hi Jen,
You have SEDUCED me and I’m ready to read all the books up for grabs. I have 14 or 15 tattoos. How many do you have? Where did you live when you were a tattoo artist? Ever tattoo anyone famous? Would you come over to my house and tattoo me? *g* I’ve wanted a new one for months!

    Hi Jen -

Plot twists are one of my favorites. I treat every potential twist the way I’d treat a murder suspect, I ask myself who has the means, motive and opportunity. Most twists will lead back, in some form, to a character.

If you don’t have a twist in mind, try looking hard at ALL the characters involved in your story. Even if right now they only play bit parts. Perhaps one of them has “arranged” some circumstances in advance. But if they did, what do they get out of it (or what would they have gotten if it doesn’t work)? There always has to be a gain in some way. Most people don’t do anything unless it benefits them somehow - even if it’s just a the “good feeling” they get from helping. LOL

Usually, for me, once I figure out what my characters really want to get out of a situation, the twists start coming from all directions. Then all I have to do is pick which one fits the story best.

    I hope that helps!!

As for what made me choose Dark Paranormal. I love vamps, and in my perview, when you’re dealing with characters who are potentially thousands and thousands of years old, some of them are going to be far less than human. So that lets me explore some of the horror elements I love so much. Plus, I wanted to present a little different view of vampires and how they came to be. :)

    Hi Chris -

I did get to meet Sherrilyn, a few years ago in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She’s so nice, and such an incredible lady. She signed my copy of Seize the Night with: “Jen, good luck with your writing.”

    I still cherish that book!

I think there’s a part of me that will always idolize her. She has the kind of personal interaction with her fans that I want to have with mine. To me, she is everything an author should be. :)

  91. Comment by Jen Turner — December 9, 2008 @ 10:44 am

    Hi Mela -

I forgot to warn everyone that I’m practically a walking, talking, silken avatar of pure seduction. :) LOL

I have 6 tattoos, most of which are dark art. I have 2 skeletons - one crawling over my shoulder, one on the back of my neck with its legs folded up to look like an ancient symbol, a zombie-esque woman with negative space skeletons in her black evening gown on the oustide of my right forearm, a gruesome little scene on the inside of my right forearm that I really can’t explain except to tell you there’s a guy with a butterfly pinned to his chest. :) Then I have a treefrog with a rose in its mouth on my right ankel, and an angry sun I drew on the inside of my left forearm.

I got the frog back when I was 18, before I really hit the dark art stage. LOL!

I can’t say I’ve ever tattooed anyone famous, but the shop I used to work at (back in 2001), On The Edge Tattoo in Bowling Green, Ohio, I think has inked a rapper or two. :)

I’d gladly come and tattoo you, but we’d have to open our own shop and get all the proper permits and health department approvals, lest I be penning the next novel in the series from jail. :)

With about a half an hour to go, I wanted to take a minute to extend another BIG THANK YOU to everyone who commented, asked a question, offered well wishes for the series and compliments, bought my book, and to BBB for the awesome review and this opportunity.

I had a blast! And wish all of you good luck on winning the prize package. :)

I also want to wish you all a Merry Christmas (for those who celebrate) and a Happy Holiday season to everyone in general!

I’ll be posting the first 3 chapters of the second book in the series, Eternal Hearts, on my website in the next week or so, so stop by and check it out. You can also email me at jentATdarknesswithinnovelsDOTcom if you have any questions, comments or just want to chat. And if you’re interested, you can join the Forums on my website and chat with me and other readers!

Thanks again, everyone!! You were great! :)
