Think before you speak: this was a hard one for Michael Cromby. His mouth had landed him in some very sticky situations in the past and it wasn’t looking like his luck was going to change anytime soon. Michael knew he was going to find himself on the receiving end of something disappointing - that was just the way his life went so why shouldn’t he say what he wanted. Now enter a bolt of lighting and a mischievous out-of-this-world angel, and Michael is about to find out that even this down-on-his-luck ex-con has a chance for some redemption.

Michael Cromby was lonely and there was nothing he could do about it. Sure he found himself fantasizing about Dove the owner of the building where he was holding down his latest job, but Dove was untouchable in his gilded world of money and privilege. It also didn’t help that Dove preferred woman but he still was Michael’s fantasy on two legs. Too bad Dove was a royal ass; alright perhaps Michael had provoked Dove but really was it necessary to fire him? Okay yeah it was warranted, but you have to remember that Michael does have problem thinking before he speaks. He also has a problem saying “no” to someone in need even though he feels that for every good action he does, nothing positive comes from it. So when, as the object of Michael’s lust and anger, Dove gets hit by lightning, Michael drops his anger and leaps to help Dove; little does he know his world is about to change.

The Star Man takes an interesting turn for Michael when his arrogant boss is taken over by an angel alien who lives to observe mankind. Angel Dove, for lack of better word, is obsessed with Michael and his depressed soul. He manipulates the events so that he can save Michael. Angel Dove is naive and filled with childish enthusiasm for living like a human but very adult with his carnal desire for Michael. His only desire is to save Michael for the darkness that surrounds him.

I had some issues with The Star Man - namely with the angel possession of the human Dove. It was mentioned that Dove was sleeping in the consciousness of his body while the angel took it over. This very heterosexual male possessed by an angel that desires another man and acts on this desire -it just seemed very hard to read a book that took away the man’s free will. It isn’t explained and rather bothered me enough that I didn’t enjoy the book. If you don’t mind this aspect of the story, this book does give you a new prospective on the whole guardian angel mythology.
