PLEASE NOTE: The Donna Grant event is now over. The winners will be drawn at random at a later date and notified via email.

It’s finally here! FORBIDDEN HIGHLANDER is on the shelves!

A DANGEROUS SECRET…

Fallon MacLeod has gifts any warrior would covet – fierce strength, unmatched skill, even immortality. But those gifts come at a price that puts everyone he loves at risk. Only when his brother, Quinn, is taken captive does Fallon leave the seclusion of his Highland home to seek the king’s aid. And though every women at court would gladly be his for the asking, one alone causes desire to roar to life within him: beautiful, mysterious Larena Monroe.

A WILD DESIRE…

Rumors swirl around the castle about “The McLeod” but Larena knows the truth. Like Fallon, Larena is searching for a way to vanquish the evil Druid who wants to wreak havoc on earth. Drawn to Fallon in spite of her fear, she surrenders to a passion that shocks them both with its raw intensity. But Larena dares not hope for more – not when she holds a secret that could turn her fiery Highland love against her forever…

About the Author:
Donna Grant is the award winning author of more than twenty novels spanning multiple genres of romance – Scottish Medieval, historical, dark fantasy, time travel, erotic, and paranormal.

Donna was born and raised in Texas but loves to travel. Her adventures have taken her throughout the United States as well as to Jamaica and Mexico. Growing up on the Texas/Louisiana border, Donna’s Cajun side of the family taught her the “spicy” side of life while her Texas roots gave her two-steppin’ and bareback riding.

Her childhood dream was to become a professional ballet dancer and study under the amazing Mikhail Baryshnikov. Though she never got to meet Baryshnikov, she did make it to New York City and performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Later, Donna’s love of the romance genre and the constant stories running through her head prompted her to sit down and write her first book. Once that book was completed, there was no turning back.

    Hey Donna,

I am so ready to get my hands on Fallon. I think i have read in your blog that it is Quinn then Hayden (my fav). who is after that? do you see this as an open ended series or is there a limit?

    Hey Christy!

Yes, Quinn’s book (WICKED HIGHLANDER) is third and is due out November 2, 2010. Hayden’s is fourth (UNTAMED HIGHLANDER)and is due out sometime May 2011.

After that there’s Galen’s books (SINFUL HIGHLANDER) with a tentative release date of November 2011.

And then its Broc’s book (DARKEST HIGHLANDER)! I’m in the middle of writing his book now. It has a tentative release date of May 2012. :)

Out of all the books so far, my editor’s favorite is Hayden’s book.

    Hi Sandy!

    Oh, good question.

Hmm…I’m not sure. I knew if my heroes were going to be Warriors have primeval gods inside them, whoever they were battleing needed to be able to stand their ground.

With my heroines being Druids with magic of their own, I thought it would be perfect to have evil Druids as well. :)

    Hello Donna,
I had to wait for Forbidden Highlander my bookstore was out of them.

    Who is your favorite villain?

    Reply by Donna Grant — May 26th, 2010 @ 4:19 pm

    Hi, Ruth!

Oh, wow! Really?! Well, I’m sorry you had to wait, but I’m glad to hear its moving off the shelves. :)

My favorite villain…hmm…tough one. There are some really good villains out there. I love the ones that make you wonder if they’re really as bad as they want you to think they are. For instance, Dark’n Raul from the TV show Legend of the Seeker.

There are so many sides to Dark’n Raul, and we’ve gotten to see several of them. I’m really hoping, despite all his awful deeds, that he turns out to do the right thing and be a good guy.

    Hi, Bethany!

Well, I love research! I do a lot of it to make sure I try and create the right atmosphere for my books. Also for the castles and villages, the landscapes and the clothes of the time. Especially the weapons.

However, with writing a historical paranormal where magic is heavily influenced in the books, I do take some literary license for the books.

Hi, Forbidden Highlander sounds like a fun read, I’m intrigued to know more about the world. It sounds like you’ve written a lot of novels, do the characters in FH appear elsewhere in your previous books? Do you have other series that interweave characters? thanks.

(I voted in the bbb poll and commented in the weekly chat, RSVP’d for your event and Keri Arthur’s event and went to Karin Harlow’s LOST book release page.)

    Hi, Stephanie!

Glad I’ve intrigued you. :) The Dark Sword series isn’t connected to any of my other books, however, I have connected series before. Or, I should say one main character.

I had three series (Druids Glen, Royal Chronicles, and The Shields) where there was a Fae, Aimery, who was a major part of all three series and helping the characters out. Aimery did get his own story - and its one of my favorites - Dragonfyre.

    Thank you!

Historical hands down is my favorite. I love medievals, but I also love paranormals. It’s very natural for me to include all three of my favorites. Which I’m *very* thankful I’m able to do.

Whatever hero I’m writing at the time is my favorite. :) I get so into their worlds and feelings that I can’t help but make them my favorite. However, there are two Warriors (Phelan and Charon) in the Dark Sword series that I’m just dying to write!

    Hi Donna,

I am really looking forward to reading Forbidden Highlander. I love books set in Scotland and your cover is freaking HAWT!!!

How do you stay focused when you write? There have to be so many things to keep track of for each book as well, does that ever get hard? Do you ever find yourself writing the wrong characters into a story because they “fit” or anything?

Thanks for sharing with us today!

I RSVP’d for the chat today.

    Hi, Sharla!

Thank you! I’ve been pretty happy with my covers. :)

Writing is like any job. There are days when its easy, days when its hard, days when you’d rather claw out your own eyeballs rather than write one more word/sentence/paragraph. lol.

But I love it. So, you get through the difficult days and pray that the next day is better.

As for staying focused, believe me between emails, blogs, twitter, FB, and everything else, its *very* easy to let my focus shift if I let it.

I have a notebook as well as a file I keep specifically for each series. I write down everything that I know will be important for future books - and to help ensure that I keep everything straight. :)

    hugs,
    D

Donna, if you could spend an afternoon with anyone (alive/dead/historical/fictional), who would you like to spend it with? and what would you do?

What book are you reading? and who are your must read authors?

If you weren’t an author what would you be doing?

And a sweet one at last: what is your favourite dessert?

    Hi, Stella!

Good to see you again. :) And thank you!

I’d like to spend time with an every day, unimportant person from the medieval time, preferrably Scottish. I’d love to know how it was to truly live as a commoner during that time.

Reading a book for a contest, so can’t say. :S

Must read authors: Lara Adrian, Lisa Kleypas, JR Ward, Christina Dodd, and entirely too many more to list. lol

I’d probably still be an accountant if not an author.

I’m currently reading an interesting book I probably wouldn’t have picked up on the shelves, but its for a contest (which is why I can’t tell you what it is) and I find it’s quite interesting. Its one of the reasons I love to judge contests.

When I’m not writing? What’s that? lol. Kidding. Usually I’m with my family. I’ve got two young kids that constantly keep me going, though we do occassionally slow it down to catch a movie or one of the shows we watch as a family.

Do you listen to music while you write? Is so is it for inspiration/to get into a certain mood or is it to block the outside world?

    Hi, Beth!

Yes, I do listen to music. I began writing when I was pregant with my oldest child, so I’ve written with a crying baby in my arms and another hollering “momma!” every two seconds. I can block out just about anything. :D

But, I love music. Different music can change my moods. I have some soundtracks from movies (Lord of the Rings, Troy, Last of the Mohicans, etc…) that I have set up on my iPod to play as I’m writing. Everyone in my house knows when that music is on not to bother me unless your bleeding or broken. lol

Well, if I wrote the way they actually spoke in medieval times, none of us would be able to read it. :) I put in a splash of Scottish speak (verra, doona, isna) throughout the book to give it that flavor. I really don’t like to read books where I have to reread a line five times just to try to understand what a Scottish character is trying to say. :) But each reader is different.

Hi Donna, I signed up to be your friend on Twitter, facebook & Myspace. I bought your book today too. I left you message there too. I do have a few questions.

How long did it take you to publish your first book, after you started trying?

What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview? How would you answer that question?

What’s the best thing about being an author?

    Hi, Christine!

First, thank you so much for buying my book! That’s the best compliment anyone can do for an author. :) I so hope you enjoy Fallon and Larena.

I wrote for about six years while trying to get an agent before I looked into epublishing (which isn’t for everyone). Once I submitted to the epub, it took about four months to get my first contract through an epub. Then another two years to get my first contract through a New York print publisher.

You know, I’ve done so many interviews, and I’m always amazed at the questions I’m asked, questions I would never have thought to ask, or that anyone might want to know. I’m just thrilled that anyone is curious to know about me. :D

The best thing about being an author is threefold. One, is seeing your book on the shelves. Each time is so amazing. The second is seeing a reader - someone who doesn’t know you - reading *your* book. The third is you, the reader. Without readers, there wouldn’t be authors. :)

    hugs,
    D

Hi Donna! I am sorry to say I haven’t read any of your books, but now that I’ve been introduced to them, they sound amazing, I will def be putting them on my tbr list. I love all scottish and irish things, I even researched my geneology and joind my scottish clan! That was an amzing thing to research, and I highly recomend every one to do it sometime. I saw your earlier comment about not really combining characters into dif books, so does that mean that they can be all stand alone books? Or do you suggest they be read in order for the history? I checked out your website, very nice, I am glad the books are offered in ebook form. I love my kindle!! I see you have cats, I am owned by 10. yes, that’s right, 10. (cat rescue). So what are their names? Thanks again for being here, I have added your books to my wish list, and will def be checking them out!!

    Joani -

Thank you! When I commented on my characters in the earlier question, I meant that the characters in the Dark Sword series didn’t carry over to other series. The Dark Sword characters do, however, show up repeatedly in all the Dark Sword books. :)

My books in the DS series can stand alone, but to fully understand what’s going on, its better to read them in order.

My cats are Lexi, Sheba, and Sassy (who’s actually my daughter’s cat). I have pictures of my pets up on my Facebook page.

    Hi Donna!
I can’t wait to get my hands on some of your wonderful stories. Unfortunately, as I’ve only recently come across you, as an author, and your works, I’ve not yet had the chance to enjoy any of your works!

While I’ve read much about the Dark Warrior series ( I am totally stoked to read these) I’ve not yet had occasion to hear much about the Sisters of Magic series. I saw mentioned that these are currently only in eBook format. As I don’t have an eReader, I was wondering if there is any future plans to have the Sisters of Magic release in print?

    Hi, Kate -

Ah, my Sisters of Magic trilogy. I loved writing those books. It was one of a few that I set in England instead of Scotland.

I would love to say that one day they will be in print, unfortunately, they are with an epublisher who doesn’t really do print books. So, I’d have to say that will probably never happen. Also, they are a few months away from going out of contract. The rights will revert back to me, and I’m not sure what I’ll do with them.

I also know several people that still read the ebooks on their computer. Though an ereader would make things much easier, I think. :)

Since I have such a young family, I make sure that I’m done with my pages before I must get the kids from school. I also try my best not to have to write on the weekends. Although, occassionally (like today) things happen and I have to stay on deadline.

I write Monday - Friday as long as it takes to get my 20 pages done. It usually takes about 4 hours to get my pages done, but that time is also taken up with chatting with readers, doing other promo stuff, and talking to my editor and agent. :)

    Hi, Margay!

It pretty much came down to the fact that my height wasn’t too much of a problem, because me being so short was easier for the guys to lift me in the dances. It was the fact that I wasn’t scary, skeleton skinny and I my boobs were too big.

    I kid you not!

They wanted me to do something about it and I said no. So, I went to college and studied to be an accountant. It was while at work one day that I decided to try writing. My hubby had been urging me to do it after listening to all my story ideas.

So, I tried it. It took me about three months to complete my first book, and then I never looked back. I knew it was what I wanted. :)

Hi Donna! Congratulations on your release. I love a sexy Scot!

When you’re writing your first draft, do you share your chapters with your Beta readers/crit partners as you go along, or do you wait until the draft is finished? How do you feel about writing the synopsis? (A friend is agonizing over hers right now.)

    Happy sales!

    Hi, Laurie!

I don’t use critique partners or beta readers. I have some authors who are very close friends of mine that will read something if I need them to.

I really don’t care for synopses. Its an art, that’s for sure. I’ve been very, very lucky in that my editors understand that I cannot plot the book ahead of time. If I do, in my mind the book is already written. So, they don’t get very detailed, lengthy synopses from me. Most of mine are about 4-5 pages in length and I make sure to hit on the key points of the story - or at least the parts that I *think* might be in the story. lol Editors understand that the stories change, so most don’t make you stick to the synopsis.

Heroines are going to be druids? Oh yeah. This is going to be great! I was wondering what other creatures I would encounter (excluding druids, and warriors)? I was also wondering (this question was probably asked already) but what prompted you to write about these heros and heroines?

    Hi, DBSKLover!

Thank you. :) The only other creature - so far - in the series are the wyrran. They were creatued by the villain to be used only by her. They are ugly, yellow skinned creatures that cannot talk. And they like to creature lots of havoc for my Warriors.

As for what prompted me to write about the Warriors…I knew I wanted to write about Highlanders again, but different than what I had did before. I kept playing the “what if” game. “What if my heroes had gods trapped inside them?” etc… It was just supposed to a trilogy with the brothers, but the more I delved into this new world, the more I realized it could continue one for several books.

    Hi, Sue!

No, I’ve always just stuck to their books to read to them. They love Greek mythology, so I read a lot of those stories to them.

    Hi Donna,

    my questions:
if you were asked to write a book with any another author you want, who would you choose?
Have you ever written a character who is based on an actual person? Could you give us that character’s name?
Could you think of a novel by another author that you wish you have written yourself?

    Thanks!

    Dovile P.

    Hi, Dovile!

You know, I have no idea what author I’d want to be paired with to write a book. I’m not sure I could do that. Some authors co-write books very successfully, but not sure I could. :)

Oh, I’ve given characters traits of actual people before, but never based a character on an actual person.

Any great book I’ve read I always think, “I wish I’d have had this idea!” lol. But its not just the idea. Its the author’s voice and how she/he sees things that bring that idea to life and make it brilliant.

    hugs,
    D

    Hi Donna!

    1. Already a BBB newsletter subscriber

    2. What are some of your “family” TV shows? What draws you to write more romance than UF?

Your Scottish comment reminds me of reading Roots. I just sounded out a few sentences and caught on fast. Helps that I have a Southern background, though. :) I’m short, curvy and love to dance, so I understand the frustration when they didn’t like that.

RSVPd for this, heading to Karin now, will do book chat later, voted/commented, RSVPd Keri and Jenna.

    Hi, REB!

My kiddos think that since they are a little older now that they can watch anything they want. :) For instance, they love, love, love Supernatural. Occassionally we’ll let them watch a show that isn’t too scary, but for the most part, they’ll have to wait until they are much older. (8 and 11 just aren’t old enough!)

We watch Merlin and Legend of the Seeker. We love Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, and now the Stargate: SGU. Oh, and we’re getting caught up on the Farscape shows as well.

    hugs,
    D

Hi Donna, I’ve never read any of your books because I was a Highlander tv watcher, but once again BBB has done it again by letting me hear, meet and really take an indepth look at your books. I now plan to read this one! Can you tell me some good cajan stories and do these stories ever influence any of your books? I’m a BBB newsletter member, chatted in weekly chat, RSVPed in both events, voted in poll, joined in Karen’s event, RSVPed here, and I think that is all. Lisa D.

    Hi, Lisa!

Oh, I loved the TV show Highlander. And the movies! I hope you enjoy my book.:)

If I ever write a contemporary story set in Louisiana and cajun country, you better believe I’ll use the stories I’ve been told - and experienced. :)

    Hi, Donna!

One of my favorite parts of being an author is interacting with readers. :)

I have no plans to write a YA book, but you never know what the future holds.

    hugs,
    D
