Fish Out of Water by MaryJanice Davidson
Fredrika Bimm (but please just call her “Fred”) is exhausted. Sure, leave it to the King of the Undersea Folk to think her to be the best candidate to act as liaison between the mer-people and humans. Her! Grumpy. Grouchy. Does-not-like-people, Fred. So what if she is the only half mermaid/half human hybrid currently in existence? Did anyone catch the “does not like people” part? Between being Artur, Prince of the Undersea Folk’s girlfriend (yeah seriously, a prince’s girlfriend!), trying to quit her job, helping her metro sexual best friend (who most everyone thinks is gay but he‘s not) plan his wedding to her ex-boss (who still refuses to accept her resignation), and dealing with the overzealous press (who are up in her fins), Fred is at wit‘s end.
To add to her craze, her father, the infamous traitor to the Undersea Folk, the one who she has never met before and yet is the reason why majority of the mer-people do not like her, has shown up on her doorstep. And he says he is truly sorry, first for trying to stage a coup in the ocean against the royal family and second for not being there as a father. But he will undoubtedly prove his repentant nature and show his loyalty to where it belongs. Time is no problem for the Undersea Folk.
Of course that then is the perfect time for the King to come tell her that some mer-people are missing and have disappeared from his all ocean-encompassing telepathic mind. He also had to add that not only will he need her assistance but also the help of her previous-but-no-longer-suitor-who-she-could-not-care-less-about Dr. Thomas Pearson. It seems that even after she has chosen Artur over Thomas, Thomas still has an annoying way of hopping to the forefront of her mind.
Now it is common knowledge that Ms. Davidson was contracted for three books on Fred and has told readers that this is the final tale (pun intended) for Fred the mermaid. So with all the dignity I can muster to befit such a wonderful story I simply say: SAY IT ISN’T SO MJ! Say it is not so! Fred is really such a lovable creature. And by lovable I do not mean she gives off the warm and fuzzies and makes you think of rainbows and Bambi. No, she is lovable in the sense that reading about her antics, on land and sea, can make even the most humorless of brutes, laugh and cry along with her. Fred’s is the “lovable” that makes you think of the good ol’ times with friends when you laughed so hard you had tears in your eyes and almost wet yourself. The wit and humor and so-out-of-this-world craziness (that it is rather easy to relate to) feel in Fish Out of Water is too good to pass up on. Like many fans, I sincerely hope Ms. Davidson does not end Fred’s whale of a tale (pun intended) here but writes more, much, much more about such beloved sea creatures
