Charlie Runs Rings Around the Earth by Robert Appleton
Charlie Thorpe-Campbell is the fastest RAM runner in the world. He follows in the footsteps of many Thorpe-Campbells who have always been among the world’s fastest. As a champion RAM runner, Charlie runs rings around the Earth in a very literal sense.
On his latest run, Charlie is swept through a wormhole to a distant galaxy where he crash lands on a barren and seemingly isolated planet. But then a strange group of aliens enlist his help, and Charlie realizes the fate of the galaxy rest in his hands. The same talent that has brought him fame and fortune must now be used for his very survival.
Robert Appleton takes his readers on another fantastic journey to exotic worlds with foreign landscapes and alien life forms. He manages to paint a stark portrait of a planet that is both terrifying and pathetic. You will fall and love with two of the little alien children that Charlie feels compelled to help.
Charlie is an interesting character, one whom I did not particularly like. Do not worry, he grows on you, and about half way through, you will be cheering for him. He is extremely arrogant and tends to hide his emotional issues behind his grandiose personality. However, when he encounters challenges on an alien planet, he steps forward and shines.
If you are into science fiction and great writing, give this a try.
