****½

Ryan is looking forward to his daughter’s birth and the life he and his wife will have afterward. Then tragedy strikes, and Ryan doesn’t know what to do or where to turn. After living in a fog for a while, he succumbs to the persistent dreams and moves home. Tanglewood is a small community that seems backward to Ryan after living in the city for so long. But despite only remembering glimpses of his childhood, there is a sense of coming home. Then he meets Annie, and his world changes again, though it does take Ryan a while to accept all the changes and implications of this.

Ryan is the focal point of this story and is a refreshing change from the strong female leads we are becoming used to. While he is slow to accept that not all things can be explained by science, Ryan has other qualities. Typically good looking (we’ll allow that lol) he has a very analytical mind and a strong sense of responsibility. When problems and oppression become apparent to him within the small community, he endeavors to right these wrongs. Ryan grows through the story to realize that everything is not always black and white. I liked Ryan, really enjoyed watching him struggle with his feelings.

Annie is the unassuming heroine in the background. While Ryan doesn’t realize it, Annie is confident about the future they will have together and is happy for the most part to let things happen. I felt Annie’s character was well written so as to let her be an important part of the story without taking over since this really is Ryan’s journey.

I really enjoyed the characters in Blind Consent. Initially, it was a little slow and I was kind of wondering what was happening. Once Ryan had moved home, though, the story really picked up pace. While the paragraphs with Ryan explaining the science behind things were necessary, I did have to pull myself up as I started to skim read them. The character building is very skillfully done, though. The ending has lent itself to a sequel, and I would definitely be wanting to read it.
