*****

Anita Blake is a necromancer who also hunts vampires. She has earned the nickname “The Executioner” among the undead. However, When vampires start turning up dead, the Master of the City, Nikolaos, turns to Anita to find out who is killing them. It is through her investigation that she meets the attractive vampire, Jean Claude for the first time. While Jean Claude is determined to have her, Anita will not give in to his desires.

Anita enlists the aid of a fellow vampire slayer by the name of Edward to find the murderer. Edward wants to slay slay Nikolaos for the evil that she has wrought as a vampire. After Anita discovers who the murderer is, Nikolaos feels that Anita has outlived her usefulness. Anita works with Jean Claude to save herself and the city’s vampires.

I give this book 5 tombstones. When I first picked up Guilty Pleasures, I had never heard of Laurell K. Hamilton or Anita Blake and almost expected a Buffy type story. Boy, was I ever wrong. After reading the first book, I knew I had to read the whole series. Ms. Hamilton created a dark world of intrigue, where vampires own strip joints and all types of underworld establishments.

Anita Blake is a strong, sexy and exciting character. And Jean Claude, even though he is a vampire, is dark and intriguing and charismatic. I found myself hoping that Anita and Jean Claude would get together. I knew the series had to be good when I was talking to a friend who is a mystery buff and found out that she was collecting the books in the series and reading them as well. If someone is looking to get into the paranormal genre, Ms. Hamilton’s books are always on the list of recommendations that I offer. I know that her books were the reason I got into reading paranormal books. I do suggest that you start with Guilty Pleasures as each book builds upon the last book.

Book Excerpt: “My name is Anita Blake. Vampires call me The Executioner. What I call them isn’t repeatable. Ever since the Supreme Court granted the undead equal rights, most people think vampires are just ordinary folks with fangs. I know better. I’ve seen their victims. I carry the scars…

But now a serial killer is murdering vampires — and the most powerful bloodsucker in town wants me to find the killer…”

This was the first time I read something so unique in the paranormal genre. Great balance between horror, comedy, and romance. Love this series.

I Love this series. I was hooked right away. Lots of action, romance, and a serious dose of sarcasm. A must read series for Paranormal lovers.
