Hi Catie! Thanks so much for joining us!

Can you tell us a bit about what drew you to writing this type of novel?

Oh, mostly it was something SO TOTALLY DIFFERENT from what I’d been writing. Don’t get me wrong, I love writing my urban fantasy, but after writing 3 contemporary series at once/in a row, diving into something lush and rich and historical (not to mention full of sax and violins!) was just an utter joy.

I also very much wanted to get something as starkly different as the Inheritors’ books out on the shelves early in my writing career in order to help establish I *could* do something different…it can be very easy for a writer to get pigeon-holed, and I wanted to avoid that if at all possible. :)

I have not read this book yet, can you tell me why I should spend my money so I can read it? I have read The Queens Bastard and loved it, but I really think that this is a very good question. Lisa D.

Well, loving TQB seems like a fairly good reason to buy its sequel, to me, but I may be biased. :) TPC picks up right after TQB ends, so you get the rest of the story–which I’m not going to outline for you here, a’course. :)

Lisa, I enjoyed the second book even more than the first. There is a HUGE surprise right at the beginning that I think may have caused me to stop breathing for a moment. :)

Well, Catie, you certainly made your case for being able to write “something different.” Wow!

In QB, I wondered if I would be able to enjoy reading about Belinda, but I did. Nice job. :)

I haven’t read the Inheritors’ Cycle yet but I love the Walker Papers. I hope you plan to keep writing that series.

I hope you enjoy them, Beets. :)

Thanks, Carol! Sorry (well, but not VERY sorry) to have temporarily stopped your breathing! :) And I’m genuinely pleased people have enjoyed reading Belinda, because, well, she’s awful. Just not a nice person at all. I hoped she’d be compelling, because I always knew she’d never be loveable. :)

Sandy–DEMON HUNTS, book five of the Walker Papers, is out in June! Joanne’s story is not yet done! :)

Oh wow, Amanda. In this series? *stares at the wall for a while, trying to decide*

The truth is, the thing I really love about these books is that *everybody* has an agenda and *nobody* is the hero. There’s exactly one character who is actually a good person. The rest of them, even if they’re *mostly* good, are willing to bend and break the rules to achieve their own ends.

And most of them aren’t even mostly good. They’re mostly complete sons of bitches, if you want to get right down to it. So I really sort of love them all just for being such bastards. :)

Okay so I just started the first book of this series and haven’t finished yet,(my TBR list is ridiculous) but I love the fact that the setting is an alternate version. It lets you have all the dramatic plot lines associated with the time period, but you don’t have to stick to all the same rules.

I love the fact that these characters are so unforgiving, I love that Belinda’s not nice( putting it lightly, I know).

But there are some times when I’m reading a book, wishing the person would just do what they want and need to do and get it done regardless of how messy it is. I love that you can’t figure out everything because you don’t know what the person might do because they don’t have morals to hold them back.

I can’t say too much because like I said haven’t finished. But I did want to say how much I’m loving the series!

Catie, you know I adore these books. I am so lucky because I downloaded the sample of The Queen’s Bastard to my Kindle w/o knowing a single thing about the books, other than that they were an AU historical fantasy setting, which I love.

So from the first page, I was breathless watching the twists and turns unfold, things that would have been less surprising had I actually read the cover blurb, etc. first. I think this was the best way to read it, because honestly, even though (as you’ve said) the characters weren’t “nice” I couldn’t stop reading because I never knew what was going to happen next.

This is page-turning, exciting and edgy. And having read both books, I recommend them highly to anybody who wants a break from the everyday variety of heroes and characters. I think what fascinated me most is how much I cared about these characters, even when I didn’t like them!

I have these books, but (sigh) have not gotten a chance to dig into them yet. My kids keep me busy and I started with the Walker books. I loved them. I will get to these and honestly, finding out that no one is the good guy really intrigues me. I will start them by this weekend. I also have the Negotiator series… guess I am a fan then, does that qualify? I like your work, thank you for putting yourself on paper in so many different ways and sharing it with me.

*grins at pooks* Part of me always kind of wishes that books didn’t have to have cover blurbs, just because there are inevitably spoilers, even if they’re gently couched. Sometimes it’s really the most fun to just plunge in with no idea at all what you’re getting into… :) And what a wonderful compliment, that you cared about them even when you didn’t like them. Thank you!

Irena, I look forward to hearing what you think. As it’s been said here, they’re tremendously different from the Walker Papers and the Negotiator books. They’re not everybody’s cup of tea, but I utterly adore my readers for being willing to give them a chance. I’m a lucky, lucky writer. :)

I just began The Queen’s Bastard a few days ago and love it so far. I am kind of upset that there is no audiobook for this book. Is this because there was a diffrent publishing company for these books?

I enjoyed the strength of will Belinda wielded to get through any circumstance, personal or required by duty. As a secondary character I was enamored of Javier but I also loved the spunk and potential of Ivanova whose story I would love to follow in say, book three? Happy to read anything you write Catie, even a shopping list! Cheers!

    Hi Catie!

    1) Yes, I like history and olde England, so if I read these, I’d likely enjoy that aspect (since I do others)

    2) I like a lot of characters who at least start out as rat-bastards (but are also very goal-oriented and motivated) like Damon Salvatore from Vampire Diaries and Spike from Buffy. Villainous types also have better costumes/clothing, it seems (re: Disney’s Maleficent and Evil Queen). I don’t know if Belinda has redeeming qualities, too.

    Catie,
I’ve read a few of the Walker Paper books (like others, my TBR pile seems to have a mind [and zip code] of its own), but have not picked up either of these. I am a former history major, so, I love things historical, and much to my surprise, those of “alternate” histories as well.

I have a question for you. What made you pick Tudor England, of all the places/periods you could have chosen to write about?

    4. Done. :)

  29. Comment by CE Murphy — February 25, 2010 @ 5:18 am

REB–I’ve always felt Belinda’s sole redeeming quality is her loyalty…but that’s a double-edged sword in itself. :) She does dress well, though!

Lady D–I’ve had a fascination with Tudor England since I was about eight years old. There were such splendid political intrigues and personality clashes, and it was a time in history where there were two women going head to head over political control of countries traditionally ruled by men, so for someone who tends to write female leads, it was a great springboard.
