Release Party, Chat and Contest With Author Jennifer Estep

Posted under Chat, Contests, Guest Bloggers, Site News by Site Hostess on Thursday 18 February 2010 at 1:11 pm

PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion of this event is now over. The winners will be contacted via email at a later date.

Greetings and salutations! First of all, I want to say thanks to Rachel for inviting me here to Bitten by Books. Thanks so much, Rachel!

So as some of you may know, I have a new book out – Spider’s Bite, the first book in my new Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series.

The Elemental Assassin series focuses on Gin Blanco, an assassin codenamed the Spider who can control the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.

In Spider’s Bite, Gin gets double-crossed on her latest hit, and her handler/foster father is brutally murdered. So Gin teams up with a sexy detective to get to the bottom of who set her up and why. And Gin has no qualms about killing her way to the top of the conspiracy. Only one thing’s for certain. If Gin has her way, someone’s going to die …

I’m billing Spider’s Bite as dark, gritty urban fantasy. But it’s also just plain fun. Yep, that’s right. My assassin Gin may kill people, but she has a sense of humor about it too.

Writing fun books is something that’s really important to me as an author. For one thing, if I’m not having fun with what I’m writing, then you guys aren’t going to have fun reading it. Believe me, it shows when an author struggles with a book.

Plus, as a reader, I just like fun books. When I read, I want to be entertained first and foremost. I want action and danger and romance and sex and violence, all wrapped up in one book. Those are the kind of books that I like to read, and those are the kind of books that I like to write. Some of my favorite paranormal authors right now are Jeaniene Frost, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Kresley Cole, because their books have all the action and adventure and romance that I want, as well as that sense of fun.

The same things goes for when I’m watching TV or going to the movies. Some of my favorite TV shows/movies are Chuck, Alias, The A-Team, The Princess Bride, the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and the James Bond series. These are all shows/movies that have lots of action, lots of great dialogue, and lots of romance in them. Well, maybe there’s not so much romance in The A-Team, but hey, lots of stuff blows up. ;-)

But back to those fun books I was talking about earlier. Those are the kind of books that I like to read, and those are the kind of books that I like to write. I know that I’m not writing the next great American novel with Spider’s Bite. And you know what? I don’t want to.

I want to write something that will transport readers to Ashland, my violent, gritty, corrupt city. I want to put readers in Gin’s dangerous world for a few hours and have them experience all of her highs, lows, and everything in between (but without the actual blood spatter). I want readers to close the book and think, “Wow, that was just a fun, fast-paced read.”

I’ll leave the angst and heartbreak to other authors. For me, it’s all about having fun – and hoping that readers do too.

What about you guys? What kind of books do you like? Share in the comments. Also, feel free to ask me questions about whatever – writing, reading, the secrets of the universe. I’ll be dropping by several times during the day to check comments, so post away.

And happy reading to everyone. I hope that you all have as much fun reading Spider’s Bite as I did writing it. ;-)

    Hi Jennifer,
I loved Spider’s Bite. Gin was a heroine I could really get into and I love the other characters as well, It’s a very undefined line between the good and bad guys here and I love that.

I’ve also been spreading the word to who ever will listen that this is a great new series.

Hi Jennifer! Your books sounds exactly like my kind of book! I like dark and gritty books, that still are able to have some humor. I can’t wait to read Spider’s Bite, I’ve heard only great things about it!
What is your favorite paranormal being?
Do you have a favorite great American novel?
    Thanks!

Hey Jennifer! Over the years, my interest in romance (paranormal or otherwise) has dropped considerably, but as long as there are writers out there like you who can write a book where the women are strong and the men like them that way, I’ll keep reading. So mostly, I’m just following a few of my favorite writers at this point and branching out to other genres more than I have in the past.

Question for you, on the Bigtime books. I believe you’ve said before that you’ve written more (or have ideas for more) but the publisher was more interested in Elemental Assassins. Do you think there’s a place in romance for a superhero sub-genre? Women are obviously going to see movies like Spider-Man and Iron Man and anything with Batman, so it’s not that the audience isn’t there. Can you expand a little on your success with the Bigtime books and the merging of superheroes and romance in novels?

    Hi Jennifer,

I haven’t had a chance to read Spider’s Bite but it’s on my TBR list. I love books that have a lot of action and enough humor to lighten up the dark parts. I read for enjoyment and a break from everyday life so I’m not looking for the great American novel. I want a story that pulls me in and makes it hard to put the book down.

Hi Jennifer, I just now heard about your books and Spider’s Bite sounds kind of neat! For the past several years I’ve only read paranormal romance or historical romance, but I’m looking to broaden my literary horizons!

Ok my question for you is this. Are Gin’s motives for doing her job revenged based? Is she trying to get justice for her murdered family?

Debbie — Excellent! I’m glad you enjoyed the book. And thanks for recommending it to other folks. I appreciate that. ;-)

Amanda — Hmmm … that’s a toughie. I really like fairy tales and mythology, but if I had to pick just one paranormal being, I’d have to go with superheroes — just because their powers are so varied. And because I love Wonder Woman.

I would say my favorite “classic” novel is probably “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain. It’s one classic that’s actually fun to read!

    Hello Jennifer!

Well I always loved books with fantasy elements. Now I am huge into UF. I try to look for books with a nice blend of good plot and believable romance.

I wanna know how you came up with the name Gin for your main?

I also really enjoy dark urban fantasy, and I think a little humor is important, because it’s hard for me to take something seriously that takes itself too seriously. I wanted to know if it was important to you to place your story in the South, or if maybe it was just because of familiarity?

Jennifer, like you, I like a wide variety: surrealism of the character (the type that just jumps out and you connect instantly with, the kind that lingers in your mind), action and danger to keep me on the edge of my toes and immersed until they manage to get out briefly of a scrap, romance because yeah well, I love a good romance, and humor! The type I start giggling insanely to garner odd looks from my husband and three sons.

Sherrilyn and Kresley easily feed that fix. Another variety I like are elves (okay I have a drow fixation) and sometimes high fantasy.

My only question is one that I haven’t really asked in a while.. but if you were ever given the chance to collaborate on a writing project with anyone, they can be alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

Allie — Actually, I’m with a new publisher for the Assassin series, but you’re right. My old publisher did not want to continue with the Bigtime series after Jinx. I do have a fourth book written, and I’m thinking about maybe e-pubbing that one. We’ll see.

I think there’s a big market out there for superhero stories geared toward women, mainly because there are so many different things that could be done with it. You’ve got my Bigtime books which are really light, then stuff like Sin City or Watchmen that’s really, really dark. Most of the superhero movies are just big, fun, action-adventure stories. With superheroes, an author is only limited by her imagination.

Sandy G — Me too. There’s only so much darkness and angst that I can handle in one book.

Gabrielle — Some of Gin’s actions revolve around trying to figure out who murdered her family and why. Not so much in Spider’s Bite, but that plot point really drives the rest of the series. Gin also sticks up for her friends/family when push comes to shove. But she is an assassin, so some people, she does just kill for the money.

Marianna — A few years back, someone gave me a list of Welsh names. Genevieve (Gin’s real name) was one of the names, and I thought it was pretty and unusual at the same time. Plus, Gin is short and easy to type, something that every writer will tell you is important!

Bethany — I’m a Southern girl, so a little bit of it was familiarity. But I also think that there’s something really dark and gothic about Southern settings (the real-world Savannah and Charleston come to mind). So I decided to use it in Spider’s Bite. And hey, it let me write about a barbecue joint, and what’s more Southern than that? ;-)

Viki — Right now, I’m under contract for five books, which will let me finish out the first main story arc with Gin and her nemesis. I hope to write more books in the series beyond those, but we’ll see.

Hi Jennifer!!! I agree that I love my books to be a rollercoaster ride of action, mystery, violence, romance, sex, and humor. I don’t think that’s much to ask for. I enjoy movie’s like GI Joe or Transformers, and shows like the A-Team. I want explosions and to give my brain a break from thinking too deeply.

I am very excited about Spider Bite. I keep wanting to buy it, but I’m being good with the cash at the same time. I have a trip plan to Borders today, so I think I’m finally going to take the plunge. :) I have a question about your world and elementals. You mentioned on another interview that Gin has the rare ability to control to elements at the same time. Can you use them at the same time? For example, turn something into rock and then set-it on fire…could be a good weapon. Just curious.

    Thanks for stopping by. :)

Raonaid — If you like elves, you should check out the Raine Benares series by Lisa Shearin. It’s an epic fantasy about the elf sorceress. Lots of cool magic/world building and a love triangle.

I’m a huge James Bond fan, so I’d love to write a Bond adventure with Ian Fleming. Cool question!

Jackie — The Assassin books are darker, but I think they have a lot of the same elements in common with my Bigtime books — a strong heroine, cool magic, lots of fight scenes, and some sizzling romance. Everything’s just darker and grittier in the Assassin books.

It was a lot of fun writing a character as tough and kick-butt as Gin. I didn’t really have a problem with that at all, mostly because she gets to say things that I can only dream of! ;-)

Beet — I hope you enjoy it.

Debbie C. — I’ve only read the first Anita book. Yet another series that I need to catch up on …

Debbie H. — I think so too. I’m hoping the books will sell well enough for me to be able to write several more of them.

Heather C — I’m super excited about the A-team movie that’s coming out in a few months. I love it when a plan comes together! ;-)

Gin can control the elements of Ice and Stone (the other two in my world are Air and Fire). She could use them both at the same time, like coating rocks with ice to make her enemy slip and fall. I like your idea about flaming rocks too!

Beth — I have a fourth superhero book written. I’m thinking about maybe e-pubbing that one sometime in the future. We’ll see.

Hi Jennifer! A huge welcome from myself and the staff at BBB! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to be with us today.

First I have to say that out of the gate in 2010 Spider’s Bite is my new favorite kick ass urban fantasy book of the year. It will be really hard to top for a new series. I typically don’t gush much, but this was a damn good book. I have read your other work and it is great too. This is the complete opposite type of style. I love LOVE LOVE it. :)

The review for Spider’s Bite just went up here: http://bittenbybooks.com/?p=19711

I didn’t write the review, BUT it really sums up my thoughts on many levels. (could be because Jackie is my evil brain twin too). lol

The artwork is excellent, this is really a well pulled together package from your groundbreaking writing to the publishing team and everybody who made it come to life. WELL DONE!

My question now that I am done gushing (really I am), is how many books are you contracted for in the series if can tell us. I see that there are two more available for pre-order on amazon.

Readers if you haven’t bought this book, RUN do not walk and get your copy now. You will be glad to have Gin Blanco in your life.

Jennifer - I am just finishing Spider Bite only 10 pages left darn train was fast this morning. I am loving it. Gin is a snarky woman who barrel’s ahead and makes no bones bout who or what she is. I can’t wait until the next one and when would that be? Also, whats your plan for Donovan Caine? Better yet if you want to write Roslyn out the picture I will volunteer to help ole’ Finn out.

As for what I like - I like P/F/UF/SF Romance. I also like UF/SF general fiction.

As for the world you created — where did you come up with the elemental mythology? Also, does the elemental need to be in contact with their element to make it work? I.e. Stone with Stone Air with Air etc.

It really depends on my state of mind or rather where I want it to go. Sometimes I like books dark with lots of angst, other times I want something with a splash of humor throughout. I personally like to deal with tension by breaking it with some humor in life so it goes that I enjoy that in my reading as well.

Jennifer — Yep, just the first Pirates movie. I was really disappointed with Pirates 2 and have not seen 3 yet. Johnny is too busy counting his Pirates millions to worry about little ole me. LOL.

Rachel — Thanks for having me here. And thanks to you and Jackie for the awesome review. I’m so glad you guys enjoyed the book. ;-)

Yep, Web of Lies and Venom are up for pre-order at Amazon. So I’ll have three books out this year, and I’m under contract for two more after that. So 5 Assassin books total at this point. I’m also doing some free short stories that folks can read on my Web site too. The first one, Spider’s Bargain, is up on the Excerpts page at my site — http://www.jenniferestep.com.

And if you haven’t, go to my site and check out the cover for Web of Lies. It’s just as cool as the one for Spider’s Bite is. Then again, I may be a little biased …

Leni — UF is a great genre to get into.

Marnie — Cool. Glad you are enjoying it. Web of Lies comes out May 25 so you won’t have too long to wait. Venom, the third book, will be out in October. Donovan is in Web of Lies, and I’m also introducing a new love interest for Gin in that book too — sexy businessman Owen Grayson. Since this is UF, Gin won’t get her HEA until a little later on in the series. Whether it’s with Donovan or Owen, well, you’ll just have to stayed tuned. ;-)

Lots of folks have liked Finn’s character as well. I will tell you that he gets his comeuppance a bit starting in book 4 when the woman he starts pursuing turns out to be a little harder to catch than he thought. And no, it’s not Roslyn. ;-)

Wendy — Just some dead freaking silence. LOL. I’m one of those authors who likes quiet, alone time when I write — no music playing, no distractions.

Sue — That’s what the TBR pile is for. So you can always have a book around to match you mood. LOL.

Jackie — The fourth book is called Nightingale, and the heroine is event planner Abby Appleby (you’ll meet her in Jinx). The hero is the sexy, gadgetmaster Talon, and the villain is named Sundown (think a cowboy ubervillain). Abby also has a dog that she rescues named Rascal.

Giada — Thanks! I would say that my all-time favorite book is Beauty by Robin McKinley. A lovely, lovely story.

I was wondering, do you think the cover of you’re book does a good job at representing whats on the inside? Thanks! :-)

Jackie — You have a good memory! Yep, Abby was the one coordinating the superhero event in Hot Mama. Talon is more of a Green Arrow-type character. He doesn’t have a bow and arrow, but he’s got some cool sunglasses, grapplings hooks, etc. Jasper’s the only bombmaker in Bigtime. LOL.

Minn — Those are two more series that I’ve enjoyed but am way behind on …

Virginia — I just started reading Mead’s Vampire Academy series, but I’m hooked on it. Hmm … it would have to be somewhere with books and mountains (I’m a mountain girl at heart). How about a library with a great picture window view of some awesome mountains (and computers with links to Amazon so I could buy more books once I got done with those in the library).

Chelsea — I do think that the cover of Spider’s Bite does an excellent job of representing what’s inside. It conveys one of the major scenes very, very well.

congratulations on your release, I can’t wait to read Spider’s Bite! Your book sounds fascinating and the reviews are wonderful. I love a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, action, adventure, and romance that’s for me.

My favorite books right now are Kresley Cole’s IAD series, Jeaniene Frost Dead series, and Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. I love Paranormal/Urban fantasy.

What’s the hardest part of finishing a book, do you pretty much have the book planned out or do you just go with the flow and let the muses have their way?

I finished Karma Girl about a week ago. While I was in college, I got behind on all non-assigned books & now I’m delving into all the books that I missed during my absence. ; ) I’m really enjoying the Urban Fantasy (Kitty series by Carrie Vaughn, anyone?) plus I’ve been reading Terry Pratchett and for my next trip to the library I’ll be picking up Hot Mama as well as trying to find some steam-punk on the shelves. I’m having so much fun “re-learning” all the sci-fi/fantasy sub-genres. : )

Onto the questions: how did you get a start with newspaper work? I’m also an English major (but no journalism) and I’m wondering what I can do with this degree (besides teach - everyone always assumes I want to teach when I say I’m an English major… not true!)

Hey southern girl (from a girl with southern parents),

I like similar books to your ideas: action/adventure, humor, some romance, strong female heroine (like Anita Blake, generally), stuff blowing up and a mystery with possibly a lot of sexual tension thrown in for good measure.

Since you like violence and action, what word(s) would you use to describe your sense of humor? (Mean or more fun but smartassed, etc.?)

My question is: I know this is a new series, but do you have other ideas in other worlds or genres that you’re just dying to write? Or is your main focus on the series you’re doing right now and you don’t want to think about going in any other directions.

    Hello Jennifer!
Thanks for coming here to chat with us! I haven’t read Spider’s bite yet, but it sure looks intriguing, I’ve just added it to my TBR list.
To answer your question: I also like the kind of books you described, danger and action mixed with romance. Romance alone gets boring, but some times danger and action without some romance feel like something is missing. So the mix between urban fantasy and paranormal romance is just about perfect.
I’d like to ask you: why did you choose “Spider” as Gin’s nick? And why did you set ice as one of the elements, and not water in general?
    Thanks!

Denise — I pretty much always wanted to be a writer. I always loved reading and one day, I had the thought that I think a lot of writers do when they read something that’s maybe not so good — why, I could write a better book than that! I started writing then, and I haven’t stopped since.

Raquel — Hmm … I hate the color yellow, and I have a weakness for cheese fries and fried chicken. I also make a mean chocolate chip pound cake. ;-)

I’ve always liked reading about assassin characters, especially in fantasy books. One day, I decided that it would be cool to write my own assassin character in my own world with my own magic system. And Spider’s Bite just kind of flowed from there.

Tawania — I’m a total pantsers when it comes to writing. I have the characters and major plot points in mind when I start writing but the rest of it just comes to me as I go along. The hardest part for me really is just finding the time to write since I work a day job.

PS I just started First Drop of Crimson yesterday, and I’m really enjoying it so far.

Christa — Cool. Glad you enjoyed Karma Girl. I know what you mean about everyone thinking you want to teach with an English degree. Basically, I was an English major in college. I wanted to make some extra money so I started working for my college newspaper one summer. I wanted to make my writing fit the newspaper style so I took a couple of journalism classes, then decided to do a double major in that and English. I did an internship at a magazine, some freelancing, etc., then went to work for a newspaper.

Although I have to say that the newspaper industry is pretty much in the toilet right now. Have you considered public relations? The money and hours at much better!

    Kristina — Thanks!

Van — I’ll be at RT and RWA this year. I’m also doing Lora Leigh’s Reader Appreciation Weekend in West Virginia too.

Jane — Basically, UF is just a fantasy book set in a more modern, contemporary setting. For example, my book takes place in a fictional southern metropolis (think Atlanta but with more mountains). The books have electricity, cars, and all the other trappings of modern life, but there’s also magic too, creatures, different races (like vampires, elves, dwarves), etc. It doesn’t really have anything to do with having white or black or Asian or whatever kind of characters. It’s just modern fantasy, where epic fantasy is more swords, horses, and a medieval-type world. Does that make sense?

REB — I would say sassy, sarcastic, and definitely a smartass on occasion. I’m also a big fan of making fun of myself (and having my characters do the same) to make people laugh.

Melissa — You won the copy from Kelly Gay’s blog, right? I saw your review on your blog. I’m glad you enjoyed the book. The secret to the universe is … chocolate. And lots of it. ;-)

Julie — Me too. If there’s not action, then I’m not going to be too interested.

    [Reply]

  54. Comment by Jennifer Estep — February 18, 2010 @ 7:46 pm

Barbara — I have a couple of things I’m working on. I have another UF series that I’m writing, but with spies instead of assassins. The first book is called Live & Let Spy and is about Abby Tomb, a bookstore owner who gets blackmailed into being a spy to help take down a ring of magical terrorists. I also have a young adult UF that I’m working on. It’s kind of like 300 meets Veronica Mars. And of course, I’m writing the fifth Assassin book right now … I have more ideas than I have time!

Vale — I work at a newspaper and I’ve done several stories on psanky, the Ukranian art of Easter egg dyeing over the years. One of the symbols used in psanky is a spider, which is the symbol for patience. That symbol and its meaning always stuck with me, and I thought it would make a cool assassin name.

I decided to go with Ice because it was the exact opposite of Fire, which is another one of my elements (Stone and Air are the other two). Also, I had some ideas for ice-pased powers that I thought would be cool, like using ice magic to make lock picks. But folks can also use water in the books too — it’s just not one of the four main elements.

2 - I definitely like fun books, or ones that have humor, an all out laugh fest, or just I think I want to word it that it’s a lighter tone, but still might be plenty serious. I will say thou that my fav all time ever came as an assignment for school. The choice was a really cheesy historical romance or The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. Great a sci fi right? Hi Jennifer~
Personally, I like reading both fun and angsty books (in a wide variety of genres, too), but it’s always a matter of what my mood is at the time I pick up a book. As a writer (haven’t written anything decent since writing became my field of study/my job–I’m a translator), I had this thing where I would write happy things when I was sad/angsty/depressed, and then I would write sad/angsty/depressing stories when I was in a happy/good period. I guess that was a way of balancing things?

Lois — I think there are lots of secrets to the universe … and that most of them involve chocolate. ;-)

Krysten — I enjoyed Stephen King’s writing book On Writing. I think he offers up a lot of good advice in that one.

Michelle — I have a room in my house that’s my office/writing space. My computer, my bookshelf, and my dry-erase board are in there. When I do a rough draft, I try to write a few thousand words on it every day until I’m done. This usually takes me about three weeks. Once that’s done, I let the story sit for a while before doing back and seeing if it holds together and is something worth pursuing.

Miranda — Donald Westlake and his Dortmunder series makes me laugh out loud. They’re just so absurd they’re funny. I would LOVE to quit the day job, but I don’t see that happening any time soon. Maybe if I win the lottery or something … LOL.

Christine — That is a good way of balancing things out.

Beth — I don’t listen to music while I’m writing. I prefer quiet time. But in general, I like Jimy Buffett, The Pretenders, The Killers, and oldies music.

Brittany — When I get blocked, I just make myself sit down at the computer and keep on writing and plugging along. Books don’t write themselves, and as long as I have something to work with (no matter how crappy it is), then I’m good. That’s what second drafts are for! LOL.

Kate — I haven’t read any of the Dream Hunters series yet, so I’ll have to go with Dark Hunters as being my favorite. I like Kyrian the best in the first DH book because that’s the one that got me hooked on Kenyon’s books/world.

I don’t think other authors’ writing has that much affect on mine. In fact, when I’m writing a new book, I don’t read in that genre just so I don’t get influenced by other folks. I want my books to be my own. But as a reader, I’m definitely drawn to authors who write in a similar vein to me — like those fun books I was talking about earlier. Kenyon, Cole, Frost …

Lisa — Hmm … I would say something like this for my book blurb: Magic! Action! Danger! Romance! And then stuff blows up. LOL.

I would want to live in the Harry Potter series. Rowling has a lot of spells/magic that would be handy in real life!

Paula — The powers between the books aren’t really related that much. The Bigtime books are about superpowers, while the Assassin books are more about elemental/earth magic. Some of the things overlap, like one of my villains in the Bigtime series has ice-based powers and so does Gin, but the worlds/magic are really separate.

Yep, I mentioned Fiona Fine in Spider’s Bite. I just wanted to give a little shout-out to my Bigtime books and the fans of them out there. ;-)

Larena — Yep, this is the start of my Elemental Assassin series. Right now, I’m contracted for five books in the series.

    Faerydreamer — Me too.

Donna — When my agent called me and told me that we had a deal for Karma Girl, I was at my day job. So I had to go outside, get in my car, and scream a little bit. ;-)

I like the paranormal genre because you can do anything you want to with it — dark and spooky, light and fun, angsty and weepy, with any kind of creatures/magic you want. An author is only limited by her imagination.

Beverly — I would say Carmen Cole in Karma Girl just because we have similiar jobs. She works at a newspaper and so do I — although I don’t unmask the secret identities of superheroes in my spare time. LOL.

Tina — I hope you enjoy it.

Stacey — I hope you’re feeling better! I have three books out now in my Bigtime series (Karma Girl, Hot Mama, and Jinx) and the first book is out in my Elemental Assassin series (Spider’s Bite). I have two more books in the Assassin series coming out this year — Web of Lies in June and Venom in October.

Lesley — I would say fantasy books by David Eddings and Terry Brooks. I discovered those and epic fantasy in general the summer before college. I loved their books and that’s what really got me interested in writing fantasy myself.

Lisa — I hope the movie’s good too. Have you seen the trailer? It looks like they’re trying to make the movie action-packed fun. As long as they do that and don’t take it too seriously, I think it will be all right. Fingers crossed anyway!

Ruby — I like to cook when I have the time. I also like hanging out with family and friends, and I am a total couch potato in that I watch waaay too much TV. I also like to play D&D (fantasy) and card games with my friends when we get together on the weekends. Yeah, I’m a total geek. LOL.

Moonsanity — Cool. Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for doing the tour. I appreciate that. ;-)

    Hi Jennifer,

in answer to your question- I too prefer fun books, because I read to be entertained, and not depressed:) I’m not that much a fan of action books, as I rather prefer fun and intrigue, a plot that makes my mind work and figure it out.

    Now I’d like to ask:
which characters do you like writing more, females or males?
And could you tell us a bit more about how the covers of your books are chosen? do you decide what will be depicted on it, or someone else?
    Thanks!

    Dovile P.

    I RSVPed for this

    HiJennifer,
Your new book sounds great! The kind of books that I like the most are spicy PNR romances (action sceens [like fights, chases, things getting blown up] are fun, too). Do you know yet how many books will be in your new series? Do you have any pets [indoor &/or outdoor]?

    Thanks,
    Lea Ellen B.

P.S. Received an RSVP from BBB.

    Hi Jennifer.

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book after reading the Bigtime series. I have my copy of Spider’s Bite waiting on my TBR pile.

I like fantasy and paranormal stories, even better if they’re funny. I also read some Regency historicals.

Dovile — I guess I would have to say that I like writing female characters better since all my books are first person from the heroine’s POV. LOL. But I’d like to write a first person from the hero’s POV someday too.

For Spider’s Bite, my editor sent me a questionnaire to fill out that asked me about important scenes in the book and what I thought would make for a good cover. Then, that got sent to the cover artist, who came up with the awesome cover. Basically, I get asked for a little input and then the artist takes it from there. I’ve been very pleased with the Assassin covers so far!

Lea — Right now, I’m under contract for five books in the Assassin series. No current pets for me. I had a wonderful little Corgie mix named Lucky for 19 years until we had to put him to sleep a few years ago. I still miss him. :-(

Beth — Cool. I hope you enjoy Spider’s Bite. I will warn you though, it is quite a bit darker than the Bigtime books.

    Jennifer,

I’ve heard good things about Spider’s Bite and I can’t wait to read it!

I was wondering if you could tell me what made you decide to create a city instead of picking one that already exists. And what went into creating Ashland? Did you draw maps, create pictures? It’s a very interesting idea.

    Thanks so much!

Lisa — Thanks! I decided to create my own city so I put things where I wanted them, like Gin’s barbecue restaurant, etc. Plus, coming up with my own city means that I can expand it and add in anything that I want to at any time. A big plus for a fantasy author. I would have drawn a map … if I had any drawing skill whatsoevre. LOL. Right now, the city of Ashland just exists in my head.

Stephanie — No problem. It’s not very exciting, but I like to write the most in my office just because I can shut the door and get rid of all the distractions!

Is that barbecue sauce based upon a real recipe? I loved this book and cannot wait for the next installment?

Hi jennifer. Thanks so much for joining us here. I really enjoy urban fantasy, some paranormal romance, and mystery/suspense. That’s why I love the paranormal genre — you get all of those things in one book much of the time.

And — I love Chuck! What a fun show. What about Burn Notice? :)

Jennifer - I loved all the Bigtime books, and the new series as well. My reading faves are mostly fantasy - epic, urban, and everything in between. Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey were early favorites - I really like strong characters, or those that discover their strengths through adversity. My question is how do you balance your writing and everything else in your life? Can’t wait for more books.

I have heard very good reviews about this book. Is there anything you do to prepare to write? How long did it take you to write your book?

    Hi Jennifer,
I love reading most genres and urban fantasy and paranormal romance are my favorites. I love reading the blurbs on the back of books and if it sounds interesting, I will usually read the book.

Do you find it easy to choose titles for your books?

Carol — I love Burn Notice too! That’s another one of my favorites. Then again, I’m a sucker for spy shows. ;-)

Robert — Thanks! It’s hard to balance everything. There are so many other things besides writing than an author has to do — keeping up my Web site, blogging, designing flyers/bookmarks, booking advertising, answering e-mails … It really is a full-time job. That’s why I spend most of my Sundays glued to my computer.

Lisa — No, I don’t really have any special ritual. If I have an idea for a story in my head, I think about it for a while, then just sit down and write it. Sometimes, it turns out well. Sometimes, it doesn’t. LOL.

Cheryl — Thanks! Nope, the barbecue sauce is just a figment of my imagination at this point. If I find a really great recipe for sauce, though, I plan to share it on my Web site. ;-)

Annalisa — Sometimes. My editor, agent, and I all brainstorm on the titles. Once we got Spider’s Bite, it was pretty easy for us to figure out Web of Lies and Venom. Right now, we’re working on the titles for Assassin 4 and 5 …
