Korrie Odell doesn’t know why she is being contacted about the Ransom Project. It had been ripped from her the moment the Institute got authorization to enter the estate and thrust into the eagerly awaiting hands of Paul Cathcart. There is only one thing that Korrie has that Paul doesn’t: the photographs of Sheba Ransom’s journal that are her last link to her father. Her father had first shown them to her when she was sixteen as a safe guard to their location, but it wasn’t till a year later, through the erotic words of Sheba Ransom, that she fell in love with a being she would never have the chance to meet. She doesn’t have the whole journal, and the mystery of the Ransom discoveries remain incomplete, but somehow she knows she will get the chance to discover what had truly happened all those years ago.

Athan could never recall her face upon waking, just the pleasant scent of lavender that reminded him of the gardens. Was she real? Maybe it was his lingering desire to mate? No matter, she probable wasn’t, and he had a warm and willing body by his side. Paul Cathcart definitely had an ulterior motive, but since his arrival at the estate, Athan’s voracious sexual appetite had been surprisingly satisfied. The man always knew when Athan’s need was great and was always willing to oblige. Athan is the combination of alchemy, sex, and science and the recipe could make a monster or a man. The good doctors had wanted the man, but he wasn’t going to give away the knowledge of his creation to anyone, not even a lover like Paul. If one edict had been ingrained in him more then any other, it was to trust no one.

It took me awhile to really get into this story. Korrie’s character didn’t seem fully formed at any given point and the erotic encounters were well done but not utterly outstanding. Though once I did get into it, there was definitely no going back. The concept of this story is highly original and the Frankenstein element is very interesting. The third person present wasn’t as strongly written as the first person journal entries, but in the latter half of this story, everything really started to come together well. Paul’s motive was murky at the start of this story, but there was some clues and I thought the building of his character was nicely done as well as Cornelius’s decent to madness. And hot damn, what an ending!
