Wolfe by Skyla Dawn Cameron
Wolfe is a dramatic addition to a wonderfully original Young Adult series. The second in the series, Wolfe starts out only a few months after its prequel, River. I say original because in all of the books featuring shifters, how many of them feature characters that started as animals and were turned human?
Looking once more into River Wolfe’s life, we find that instead of the revenge she so adamantly sought in River, she has developed a relationship with Daryl Marsden. If you remember, Daryl was the one who bit River, turning her human. While River is still not comfortable in her skin, she has started to adjust more since getting closer to Daryl and his father, Gray. They have helped her both adjust to her still new life and also have worked with her, helping to hone her wolfe senses. Still living with her foster family, River is relatively content and has plans for her future as Daryl’s mate. But much to her disbelief and confusion, a woman, Patricia Weiss, has appeared claiming that River is her long lost niece. Knowing this is not true but having no way to prove it without revealing herself and the Marsdens, River is forced to move in with “Aunt” Patricia. True to River form, however, she is far from cooperative. Ripped from the only family she’s had as a human, from Daryl and from the life she has grown used to, River is angry and frustrated and does not hesitate to show it. As a result, Patricia sends her to a special camp run by Rick Nacy, the PI who supposedly found her. Not at all pleased, River is nonetheless taken by surprise to find that the other campers are also weres.
During her time at the camp, River is almost single-minded in her search for answers. Knowing that Rick is obviously aware of what she really is, River is convinced he is the key to finding her way home and back to Daryl. But when weeks go by with no word from Daryl or his father, River wonders if she’s yet again on her own. When she finally finds a solution and gets home, she’s horrified to discover Daryl and Gray gone and their house up for sale. Finding Daryl is not much of a problem, but dealing with what she finds…that is a different story.
I have no idea how many books are planned for this series but I sincerely hope there are many more to come. While it may be classified as a YA series, this is one that anyone can enjoy. Well written with very defined characters, the series is very compelling and captivating, so much so that I find myself somewhat curious about Ms. Cameron’s background and if she’s hiding any secrets about herself. I should say, though, that while this is YA, Wolfe does have a smidgen of sex. Nothing very descriptive, intense or frequent by any means, but as a parent, you may want to read it before allowing younger teens to read it. Otherwise, this is most definitely a great series that should be on any paranormal lover’s shelf.
