Wolfskin by Emilia Filocamo
Emma Baj has returned with her father to her mother’s childhood home, the small town of Petraselice. Here, she hopes to finally get to know the woman who died giving her life. Petraselice is anything but welcoming. Cold and gray, Emma feels like it is sucking the very life out of her. But her father is happy to be back in the place where he and Emma’s mother met and fell in love. As the chief of police, he is often too busy with his work to really notice his daughter’s sadness. Her sadness, however, begins to disappear when she is befriended by Simona, the daughter of the local tavern owner. Wolf’s, the tavern, is a hangout for Simona and her friends as well as the place where Emma works. It is here that she first hears talk about the Mercuri brothers and how they are different; they are perfect, god-like creatures who don’t associate with any of the townspeople. When Emma is involved in a car accident, she gets her first glimpse of Damian and Samuel Mercuri and her life is changed forever. The Mercuri brothers are not the only ones in town with a secret identity, and Emma’s relationship with Damian will lead Emma to discover that she, too, has a secret - one that can only lead to death for the person she has come to love most.
Wolfskin was originally published in Italian and the translation to English seems to have been rushed. There are many places in the book where the translation does not make any sense and this breaks up the continuity of the story. In addition, there are more than a few parallels which will leave the reader comparing this story to Twilight - for example, Petraselice is cold and rainy, Emma is new to town, her father is the town’s police chief and the Mercuri brothers are perfect, don’t associate with the townspeople and drive expensive cars. While it does eventually veer away from being a complete Twilight knock-off, there are enough similarities that fans of Stephanie Meyer will be left feeling disappointed. My gut feeling is that if an editor where to go over this and fine tune those sections which do not read well in English, it would be a huge improvement. The story itself is the classic tale of loving someone who is your sworn enemy and it has so much potential. It contains all the elements of a bestseller; romance, heartbreak, and edge of your seat suspense. Unfortunately, the young adult audience that this book is intended for will have trouble with the awkwardness of the translation and will probably not get past the first chapter.
