Isiah, an agent for the Balance, finally has some free time and decides to do a little investigating into the Sorcerer, a shadowy and dangerous magic user. Dominus, the Sorcerer, had been a mentor to Samuel Harrigan, a powerful and evil blood mage. Isiah has had uneasy feelings about the blood magic taught to Samuel and although the entity, Balance, tells him to let it go, Isiah is determined to discover the source of the magic. The more he learns, though, the more alarmed he becomes. Dominus has created a new religion and its God promises to bring anarchy and chaos to the world and, if successful, the old gods of the world will be threatened with extinction as well. And as Isiah has learned through the centuries, “The fate of the world is often decided in the blink of an eye.”

MageSign is the sequel to RealmShift. It is a terrific standalone book, but the foundation was built in RealmShift and so it should be read first. It was very difficult for me to write a short summary of MageSign without giving away any of the plot secrets, and there are many. One of the joys of RealmShift and MageSign is in the discovery of the individual pieces of the puzzle that make up the whole of the tale. Isiah is an unlikely and often unwilling hero and absolutely delightful. He is fearless and absolutely irreverent, insulting gods (the morbid bastards) and humans alike. The novel is peopled (and I use that term loosely) with astounding characters and improbable situations that seem perfectly normal. Isiah’s best friend is a wise-cracking angel, he gets into a pissing match with the goddess Morrigan, and his love interest can (and does) kick his butt. The descriptive phrasing is chilling and graphic.

MageSign is a thriller, a mystery, a love story and a thought-provoking examination of the relationship between religion and humanity in all its glory and shame. Alan Baxter takes the reader right to the edge and then pushes us over. And I thank him for it.

[...] And what’s a blog carnival without a bit of self-pimpage? I wrote a review of The Road by Cormac McCarthy here and the Bitten By Books website wrote glowing reviews of both my books, which is always nice. Here’s their review of RealmShift and here’s their review of MageSign. [...]
