Interview:
Hi Jenna!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Jenna’s latest release Bound By Sin.
BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
JM: For me the most challenging aspect of writing is just getting the time to sit down and write. I live on a family farm and stalls need to be cleaned and animals need to be taken care of. That’s not something you can just blow off or postpone because you need to work. So especially during the winter it’s really hard for me to get the time to write. Spring, summer, and fall are much easier. The most rewarding aspect is getting the stories that float around in my head out on paper. There’s such a sense of satisfaction in that… for about a week until the next book starts talking to me! And my readers are so wonderful. I’m still new enough at this that it continues to amaze me that anyone wants to read what I write!
BBB: If you could have the Cin Craven series made into a TV series, who would your dream cast be?
JM: Oh, wow, wouldn’t it be nice to have to make that decision? Cin would be the hardest for me to cast because I don’t see a particular actress in my head when I think of her. I do that sometimes with the secondary characters because I don’t “know” them as well as I know my primaries and it helps me to see them better in my head. After I create a secondary character sometimes I’ll sit there and try to think of who would play them in a movie and it sort of cements them for me. I could see Alan Rickman as Edmund Gage, Alexis Dziena as Belladonna, Gerard Butler as Drummond, Robert Knepper as Jacques Aubert, Angelina Jolie as Morrigan, to name a few. Of my four main characters though the only actor I’ve run across that I think would be a spectacular fit for one of them would be Justin Hartley for Michael.
BBB: What are your top 3 favorite paranormal books and movies?
JM: Oh gosh, only 3? I’ve had so little time to read lately. I have a huge stack of wonderful-looking books in my TBR pile that I just can’t seem to get to. However, Seize the Night and Fantasy Love by Sherrilyn Kenyon are particular favorites of mine as well as the early Anita Blake books. As far as movies go, some of my favorites are Blithe Spirit; Bell, Book, and Candle; The Watcher in the Woods. Pretty tame stuff. I’m not a big fan of horror movies or anything that’s too gory or scary. I prefer suspense over giving myself nightmares!
BBB: What character (s) in any of your books is most like you?
JM: I will admit that Cin has my smart mouth but, honestly, I’m probably more like Devlin. He’s cautious and responsible and doesn’t run headlong into danger but he’ll fight to the death for those he loves—and be scary as hell while doing it! I think there’s a little of me in all my characters, though, even the villains. As a writer I don’t think that’s something you can help.
BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?
JM: Nothing comes to mind on my current series. However, I will say to any aspiring writers out there- never model your hero after anyone you know. I have a partially finished historical romance in my desk that I wrote in college and I modeled the hero after the really hot guy I was dating. As soon as you do that, though, you will break up and then you’re stuck with this guy in your book. Halfway through it I was severely tempted to drown him in the English Channel and save the heroine the trouble!
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
JM: On my first book it was post it notes. With the second and third books I graduated to jotting things down in notebooks or making Word files of genealogical charts. Now I’m faced with having to collate all that into something workable and easily referenced. It’s not the plots or the major things that give me trouble, it’s the little things like dates or the eye color on some of my secondary characters that I find myself having to go back to the original manuscript and look up.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?
JM: Well, I’m a tree-hugger so I do understand the environmental issues (though I think you can probably weigh that against plastic and batteries filling up landfills). I also think there’s a lot of waste that could be eliminated just by changing how the publishing industry operates in regards to things like returns. But in the end, I am a book lover. I like the smell of them, the feel of them, the look of them on my bookshelves. I can’t imagine that I would ever find myself curled up in bed with a Kindle, but I can see how e-readers would be fabulous for people who commute long distances or who don’t necessarily want anyone seeing the cover of whatever guilty-pleasure book they’re reading. They’re not for me but I can certainly understand their popularity now and in the years to come.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
JM: The big drawback of ebooks is that they’re so easily pirated. While that sucks for those of us trying to earn a living, it’s something that the music and entertainment industries have been dealing with for a long time, so I guess it’s our turn now. I think at the moment their impact on the publishing industry’s bottom line is still relatively small but (as much as it pains me to say it since I do love paper books) I think they’re the way the future is headed. That’s hard to deny when Amazon sold more Kindle books than print books on Christmas Day 2009 and print book sales only rose a couple percent in 2009 while ebook sales rose a couple hundred percent (depending on what data you look at).
BBB: Can you give us a more in depth look at Bound by Sin and the storyline that drives it and what can we expect from you next in this series?
JM: Cin has to deal with some hard issues in this book. In the beginning she has to come to terms with losing some of the people she loves, because that’s what happens when you’re an immortal with ties to the human world. Family and loyalty have always been what drives Cin so when her cousin Raina asks her to go to America to retrieve Raina’s kidnapped daughter, of course The Righteous agree. In the course of doing so, though, Cin is forced to finally face the dark magic that has haunted her for decades. This is my favorite book of the three and Morrigan and I both think that the events in Bound By Sin go a long way toward making Cin into the warrior she is destined to become. I hope to continue to build on that in the coming books as Cin and The Righteous explore new frontiers, make new friends, and fight some old enemies throughout the 20th century and on to present day.
BBB: Your background in history is evident in the Cin Craven series. Was choosing a historical setting a conscious decision on your part, or did it happen as the story began to flow?
JM: No, I always knew this series would start out as a historical. I come from a historical romance background and before I found the paranormal genre all I read were historicals. After a while, though, it sort of felt like I was reading the same story over and over again. Then a friend of mine turned me on to Xena, Buffy, and Anita Blake and I found that I really liked a heroine that kicked ass and (for the most part) didn’t need anyone else to save her. After that I wanted my books a little grittier than what I’d been used to reading. At the same time, I missed the historical setting and thought what a shame it was that all these wonderful modern-day vampires that I’d been reading had centuries of stories behind them that we never get to hear. I really wanted to read a series that started at the beginning of a vampire’s “afterlife” and worked its way up to the present day, but I couldn’t find one. So I wrote one. The decision to set the first book in 1815, however, was entirely based on the fact that I like that period’s dresses the best.
BBB: Which of your characters presents the biggest challenge to write about? Which one comes most easily?
JM: Cin and Michael come very easily to me. I know them well. The biggest challenge is writing Devlin and Justine. It’s not that I don’t know them as well, it’s that I have to tread that fine line between making them enough a part of the story that they’re “real” and not letting them completely take over Cin and Michael. I feel like I’ve done pretty well with Justine, especially in Bound By Sin, but I look forward to fleshing Devlin’s character out a bit more in the coming books.
BBB: You have also contributed a series novella and two short stories to anthologies. Did you enjoy using the shorter form as a change of pace?
JM: I really like using the short stories to fill in the gaps between the novels. Often several decades pass for the characters between books and the anthologies are a great way to briefly tell what’s happening during that time. I do prefer the longer novellas, though, because the higher word count provides more room to tell the story and makes a better plot for the readers.
BBB: What other jobs have you had besides being an author?
JM: I’ve worked in a grocery store, a western clothing store, as a bank teller and as a bookkeeper. I must say I much prefer writing and working on my farm to any of those!
BBB: Which authors works do you enjoy reading and do you have any other authors that you bounce ideas off of?
JM: I enjoy a lot of paranormal authors but I think my all-time favorites are still Jude Devereaux, Judith McNaught, and Catherine Coulter. I don’t have other authors that I work with. I’m a very private writer and I don’t want anyone reading what I’ve got until it’s finished and I’m happy with it.
BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?
JM: I think there’s always an ebb and flow. Eventually the PNR/UF genre will wane a bit and I believe historicals will probably make a comeback. But I think the vamps and weres will continue to rule the roost for a few more years.
BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?
JM: I don’t have anything coming up in the near future, but if readers will check my Facebook and Myspace pages I post all that information there!

Hi Jenna,
New to your books, but they sounds cool.
I could not help noticing that you had written a novel for TheMammonth book of Irish romance (Love Ireland, that one I should read too).
What made you wanna write a novel for the anthology?
I rsvped
[Reply]
Hi Jenna,
Don you think that part of the popularity of ebooks is due to the high price of print books? The last time I bought a new paperback it was $8.

Hey Jenna!
Welcome to BBB! Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to be with us today.
My question is about your farm. What kind of farming/barn do you do/have? And what happens when you end up famous like Nora Roberts. Do you keep the farm or travel far and wide and envelop yourself in the fame?
And when are you going to be covered in repairmen again? Cause I want pictures next time. LOL
Thanks again!
Rachel

I have not had a chance to go and buy Bound by Sin yet. I read the first two novels in less than a week. I could not put them down. I do have a question. Alot of the authors I read have more than one series going on at a given time. With the characters you have in the Cin Series do you plan on or have you thought of doing a spin off of one of the characters in the first two books? For instance…it’s been a bit since I read the first two but there is a character that guards a bridge or lives near a bridge that Cin goes to and questions him about the going on’s in the area. I cannot remember his name but I wanted to say she thought he was a doctor or sheriff and he is just one of the really descriptive characters I found interesting. Anyways, just wondering if the Cin Series is the only one you plan on working with or if there may be another one.

Hi Jenna! I love your books! I haven’t read Bound by Sin yet, but am looking forward to it. I also apparently need to check out the Mammoth books of Vampire & Irish romance!
Which of the Cin novels is your favorite? And are you reading anything good at the moment?
Also, posted a link on twitter (http://twitter.com/r_green) & added you as a friend on FB!

Hi Jenna. I have read all 3 books. Bound By Sin is by far my favorite. I loved the American history being entwined with the work of The Righteous. The war and the South at the time made it all the better. Dark magic and shady characters are always good reading.
I’m just hoping that the ending ‘vision’ will be unfolded in the future

Ok, I’ve had some hot mac & cheese, warmed up a bit, got my fuzzy jammies back on and I’m good to go!
Blodeuedd A: Trisha Telep, the editor of the Mammoth books, contacted me about writing a story for the Irish Romance book. I’d written one for her for the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance last year. I hadn’t actually intended to tell Morrigan and the High King’s story yet, but Trisha said she wanted mythic Irish heroes and I happened to have one of those in the High King (and he’s the only Irishman I’ve got), so I figured maybe that was a sign I should tell their story now!
Sandy G: I haven’t priced a lot of ebooks, so I’m not sure how different the pricing is. Mine are sold on Kindle and I think they’re the same as the print books. The big difference I see is for self-published authors or authors of smaller publishing houses, which often tend to have higher prices for their print books than the larger publishers. I was originally a self-published author and I know how unfortunately expensive those print-on-demand books are! I think when Wages of Sin was out through Lulu the retail was $15.99 and I got $1 a book in royalties. The ebooks, however, I could sell for a more reasonable price and keep all that in royalties. Of course, back then ebooks weren’t as popular as they are today, but it was a big difference in money, both for the reader and for me!
Rachel: I live on a family farm. I have my parents and my sister & brother-in-law and 2 nieces who live here. We have sheep, llamas, alpacas, one old Highland Cow, and more dogs and cats than any sane people would have. Right now I’m watching the radar and waiting for all this ice (or rain or snow or whatever) to get here so that we can go down and get everyone into the barn before they get wet. I’m not sure about the whole traveling thing. It takes a lot to pry me off this farm and I tend to get a little twitchy if I’m gone too long. I’m always real sure some catastrophe is going to happen and I’m not going to be here to deal with it.
Oh, and everyone welcome Rachel to the South! I told her on Tuesday that I’d have her interview questions to her Wednesday because I was “covered up in repair guys” Tuesday. She got a large kick out of that and, no, that phrase does not mean what she imagined it means!!! (Darn it… if they’d been really hunky repair guys…)
Heather: Yes, I have many ideas for spin-off characters, though most of them I haven’t written yet. My werewolf Drummond would be one of them. And possibly Sinclair, just because he intrigues me, but I don’t quite know him well enough yet. I can’t think of who the character is that you’re referring to. Could it be Jacques Aubert from Grave Sins? He’s a very interesting guy. I’m not sure that he warrants his own spin-off but I do look forward to using him again.
Rachel G: I have to say that Bound by Sin is my favorite. I have a soft spot for the previous two books and there are a lot of things in them that I like, but I really love the characters in BBS.
Karen L: It will! One of the downsides of writing in the first person is that you really don’t get to know what’s going on until Cin does. I will give you clues along the way as to what Morrigan plans, but it’s going to be big and it’ll tie a lot of things from the previous books together. I’m not sure how to say any more than that without spoiling anything, especially for those who haven’t read the books yet, but it’ll happen in bits and pieces throughout the series.
[Reply]
I was wondering why you picked the specific years for your books, but you already answered that for the first book. Were the years for the subsequent books chosen only because that’s how many years needed to have elapsed for you to tell that story, or did you pick the years for another reason and let that influence the story? Did that make sense?
[Reply]
Bethany: I picked 1828 for Grave Sins because that’s when Burke & Hare were murdering people in Edinburgh and selling their bodies to the Medical College (that part was true, I didn’t make that up). I just thought it would be an interesting bit of history to work into a book. I picked the Civil War era for Bound by Sin because I had this idea of Cin facing off against Sherman as he marched into Savannah or the Islands. Once I started, however, I couldn’t find any reference to anyone being able to get a ship into the port of Savannah after 1862, so I had to abandon General Sherman and set the date back to well before his arrival. Just one of those things, but I think it turned out better this way.

I have not read your books but I think I really need to get one. From hearing your praise, it seems you are a great writer and can take the imagination to a far off place. Reading is my salvation. As well as the other girls in my reading club. We are all nurses in the hospital emergency room. Yeah we are together quite a bit. We usually meet once a month for dinner and trade new and old books. I will add you to the list. My girlfirends are suckers for a good book. LOL

Hi Jenna!
I just bought your books yesterday!
Wages of Sin
Grave Sins
Bound By Sin
I told my daughter about your series and she found and bought me Bound by Sin so now I have 2 Bound by Sins! lol
I already had The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance and Strange Brew.
I knew nothing about “The Mammoth Book of Irish Romance” But I’m going to be buying it next! BBB shows me tons of Authors to read! I’m so glad I found it! I’m starting Wages of Sin as soon as I finish UNKNOWN that I’m reading now.
I RSVPed But sense I haven’t read your books yet (BUT I HAVE THEM!)I’m kinda at a loss for a question. . .How many books are going to be in this series? Sorry if its already been asked. I do have a question I have wondered about many Authors, When you get the book right after its in print do you read it? or do you read it so much writing it that your just finished?

in which order should i read the books? thanks again
[Reply]
Van: I’m thinking there are five more books, possible six. But, as I said, there are lots of options for spin-offs too. I haven’t even touched on the Furies, the eastern European counterpart of the Righteous. And right now I’m not currently reading anything. I have a huge TBR pile but my farm chores keep me so busy in the winter time that by the time I get done in the evenings my brain is too tired to read!
Chelsea B: No, I don’t really have any input on the covers. I loved the cover of Wages, less so the other two. The dress in the original cover of Grave Sins had spaghetti straps and I pitched a fit about that so the did change it. It’s still not anything that anyone in 1828 would be wearing, but at least the straps are better! I was told they didn’t want the covers to look too historical. To which I asked, “What are you going to do when we get to the third book and everyone is wearing hoop skirts?” Apparenlty they got around that by putting her in her underwear. LOL!
Pam: Nope, pretty much by the time they go to print I’ve read it so many times I’m sick of it! And then there’s the whole issue of finding something I wish I’d done differently, or said differently, and not being able to do anything about it.
Just a note on the Mammoth books… I posted this on my facebook page yesterday: The editor of the Mammoth books is starting up a new website which will go live on Valentine’s Day. It’s called Romance Royale but I don’t have a URL for it yet. You will be able to buy and download individual stories from all the Mammoth books, so if you don’t want the whole book (though they are a great way to find new authors) you can just get the individual stories you’re interested in.

Debra: Chronologically by the date the stories are set, the reading order is– Wages of Sin, the Strange Brew anthology, Grave Sins, Bound by Sin, and the Huntress anthology. The two stories in the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance and the Mammoth Book of Irish Romance are from Cin’s world but they don’t involve Cin. Technically they’re set before Wages but they can be read in any order since they’re prequels and don’t directly impact the series.

Patricia: I was a history major so I know a little bit about a lot of history. I find when I’m writing, though, that it works best for me if I research just what I need to know. “They” always say that you should do a lot of research and know more than you need to know about your subject, but I’ve found that if I go that route I end up wanting to put EVERYTHING I know about a time period in the book. I do try to make sure that any hotels the characters stay at and things of that nature are historically accurate and would have been there at the time, but I’d rather the history be more like wallpaper in the background than take over the entire story. When I get to something I’m not sure about, I look it up. That way I’m not tempted to get sidetracked on things that I find fascinating but y’all don’t care anything about!
Beet: Yes, it’s a craptastic day out there today. I’m just about to have to bail on you guys and go get the sheep into the barn. But first…. my favorite cookies are Angelfood Cookies from my grandmother’s recipe. I don’t even want to think about how many calories are in them but if anyone wants to brave that much sugar I’ll be happy to share the recipe! My favorite book to write was the first one, Wages of Sin. I had no deadline and no expectations. I felt no pressure to make it great. I was basically just writing it for myself and then I decided afterward that maybe it was good enough to share. Oddly enough, Bound by Sin is my favorite book but it was a nightmare to write. I knew what needed to go on the page, I knew what happened in the story… but it just wouldn’t come out. The muse and I fought tooth and nail on that one but I beat her into submission eventually!

I haven’t read these yet, but I’ve heard good things about them.

And do you plan to give any of the secondary characters their own books later on?

Loved the interview, Jenna. Haven’t read your books yet but would love to. I’d also love to see the movie version with that cast of characters!
Do you ever get carried away with research? How do you know what’s the right amount to weave into your tale?
Sent a friend request on FB (btw, Jenna, I read awhile back that the FB police could delete a person for using the book cover as their photo - might want to switch to a fan page, where there’s more leeway for promo)

Hi Jenna! (I still get a kick that we have the same name)I am really looking forward to picking up the first book in this series this weekend. They sound so interesting. I am always looking for someone new to read.
So a question I have is what do you do when you get writers block? Do you go do something else, like draw or listen to music, or just make yourself sit there until something comes out?
As for the contest:

Hello Jenna so glad to hear from you that there will soon be a way to buy books individually from the Mammoth Books and am looking forward to you posting the URL on Facebook for us in the future. I have enjoyed the Cin Craven series since it was released in MMPB in Wages of Sin in 2008. Since that time have gotten all the books and enjoyed each one more than the last, at present am in the midst of Bound by SIn and have laughed out loud and cried and screamed NO and cannot wait to see what happens next when I get off this chat!!!!!!!
You have a big responsibility on your family farm and my questions today touch on that.
#2
Jenna being that you have your family members living on the farm how is it that you are “twitchy” when you leave it would seem to me that with that many people available you would have lots of help????
When you were younger did you ever dream about having what basically in some cases amounts to a “Zoo”, or is the family farm just your home because it is the best place for you to be to take care of your family?

Thanks for the cool interview Jenna! I’m wondering because you sound busy like me and I write non-fiction and have started writing fiction- do you outline, research then write, or is it more sitting down cranking out the words, then filling in later? By the way, leaving home is hard for me too:)

Beth C: Thanks for asking! See my comments #10 & #22 for the answers.
Sewicked: I’m sure there are people I see on a regular basis who don’t know what I do, but that’s just because they never asked. I don’t mind admitting I write vampire books! And I raise wool sheep. They all have names and I know them all. They’re my little woolly friends!
Cate: Thanks for the heads up. I’ll check that out. As for the research, other than what I said in comment #28 I try to make sure that the history ties into the story in some way or is explained through the plot. I want it to be like soft background music and not anything that smacks you in the face. That way people who don’t normally read historicals can enjoy the story without feeling bogged down by the time period.
Terri- Nope. I think they save that for the authors who don’t need it, which is a bit backward but that’s the way the indusrty works.
Seri- LOL… aren’t we lucky?! Jenna got shortened from Jennifer when I was in the 7th grade. There were 7 other Jennifers besides me in my English class! My best friend is also a Jennifer. I’m not sure what those other mothers were thinking. There are 11 years between me and my sister so my mom had no idea she was giving me the most popular name of my generation. Or at least that’s her story! It’s funny you should ask that question. I just wrote an article that will be out next week for the Seattle Examiner (watch my Myspace & FB pages for the link) where I touched on the subject. No, I can’t just keep writing. I wish I could but if it won’t come, it won’t come. I have to go do something else, clear my head, and tell my characters to get their act together!
Brenda: No, I don’t outline at all. When I start a book I know where I’m going to begin and where I’m going to finish. I usually have a few good scenes for in the middle even if I don’t quite know how I’m getting there yet. Mostly, though, I just let the characters tell me where they want to go. The hardest part of writing is doing the synopsis for my editor. It usually ends with: “This is what I intend to do but the characters might have other ideas.” Seriously.
Denise: I’ve always written stories (or really bad poetry) but I went to school to become a history teacher. After doing my student teaching, though, I realized that was not the job for me. I do not have the patience for it. But I love writing and there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing. Well, except maybe taking care of baby pandas. I think the people at the Wolong Research Center have the best job in the world!
Susan: Thank you so much! Feel free to email me of you need anything.

Jackie, dear Jackie, hello! Somehow I skipped over you. Ah yes, I’m twitchy. And yes, I do have plenty of help. We all have our jobs and when we’re all here everything runs seamlessly. I’ve been accused of being agoraphobic, but I’m not. I don’t have a fear of leaving the farm, I just get a little sideways if I’m gone too long. I think it’s more a matter of being a control freak. I know my mom is going to read this and I hate to say it (but she knows it’s true)… I just don’t entirely trust anyone to take care of things the way I would if I was there. She’ll be the first to tell you that if I’m gone I drive her nuts calling her constantly with things like “Did anyone go down and let my dogs out to potty?” And if I’m gone overnight you should see the pages of lists I leave behind! You don’t even want to know what it was like for my poor dad when mom & I went to Scotland for 2 weeks. Twice. But it’s not like my concerns are unfounded. I have come home late at night to find one of my Jack Russells walking purposefully down the driveway (well out of sight of the house & apparently off to find Mom) because someone let the dogs out and didn’t keep an eye on them. So, yeah, stuff like that I worry about if I’m gone.

Andrea: Check out comment #24 (or my website) for the reading order. The anthologies don’t have to be read with the series but the Strange Brew story really bridges a gap between Wages and Grave Sins. If you were going to get one of them, that’s the one I’d get.
Raonaid: Wow, honestly, I’m not sure about that one. Let me think it over and I’ll get back to you.
Raelena: Check out comment #22. I think five or six more.
Heidi: Not to sound schizophrenic, but my characters sort of come up with themselves. I can’t think of one that I’ve consciously had to “create.” They’re a bit like Field of Dreams… if I need them, they will come! As far as keeping track of them, I have a genealogical chart on my computer and I have notepads, notebooks and sticky notes that I’m going to have to collate into something more easily accessible… soon!

Hello Jenna!
Thanks for taking time and coming here to chat with us! I must admit I haven’t read your books yet, but they look really interesting and are going on my TBR list. You mentioned in your interview that several decades pass between books, so I’d like to ask you what brought you to make this kind of choice? Normally in a series the time between books goes from a few years at most down to a couple of days. Is it difficult for you to manage the time changes?
Thanks!

Hey Jenna,
I do have your first two books but haven’t read them yet. As soon as I get the 3rd one though, I’m ready. I love series but I MUST HAVE at least 3 or 4 books before starting it. I have read the Mammoth book of Vampire Romance and
although I’m really not a short story person(just as I’m getting into the characters it’s over) it’s a great way to get a taste of a lot of different authors to see if your want to try their full length books. i can’t wait to start your as I love historical fiction and paranormal romance, so your books look to be a piece of heaven. Well, off to check the snow situation. Here in the NC foothills we are suppose to get between 8 and 15 inches but I got my pile of books (takeout pizza, donuts and cold beer) so I’m set.
What book would you give everyone if you had an endless number of copies and why?(it doesn’t have to be one of your books)

Andrea: Oops, I missed the first part of your question. I live in Georgia.
Jackie: And I missed the second part of your question. (Sorry, girls, I get distracted.) We all moved out to this farm when I was a junior in high school. We had a zoo at times even when we lived in the city, though. Bunnies, chickens, cats, dogs. We even bottle fed and raised three baby raccoons who fell out of one of my grandmother’s trees. Needless to say, as a kid I never played with dolls much… but I had tons of stuffed animals!
Cheryl: Yes, I have to watch that smart mouth sometimes! I was told that Cin was a little too snippy with Michael in several spots when we were editing the last book. (Cin and I both thought he deserved it, btw, but we caved and cut him some slack!)
Vale: I wanted to start at the beginning of a vampire’s afterlife and work my way up to the present day. That sort of necessitates skipping some decades or the series would go on forever and I don’t think I have that many stories in me! When I pick a time period, though, I tend to go with one I’m already interested in or one I think would make a good background for a story. And, no, the time changes themselves aren’t difficult for me. What’s difficult is changing the characters enough that time has passed but not so much that they’re not still the same people. I can fudge a bit on that because they’re vampires and I think that time moves a bit differently for them than it does the rest of us mortals.

Hi Jenna!!! Thanks for stopping by. Your series is new to me, but I checked the background that I love the idea of following a vamps story along. Meeting someone that is 400 years old, I know I would love to know about what life was truly like through the ages. I have a minor in history, so I just love that stuff.
I was wondering 1 - what made you want to write paranormal fiction? 2 - what kind of animals do you have on the farm?

Hi Jenna — thanks for interviewing over here! Could you talk a little bit about how you balance historical women’s rights issues from 1815 with a butt-kicking heroine? Thanks for visiting today, Jenna.
I haven’t read these, but I like the name Belladonna and Angelina Jolie as a character. I also have very little time to pleasure read lately but have read all but the latest Anita Blake book. I also prefer suspense over horror, so your books should be right up my alley. Also a Buffy fan, and I wish they’d do more of Spike’s beginnings and adventures there (like the way your books explore that). It’s nice that you’re choosing a few lesser-common knowledge time period link ups (like Burke and Hare). I would have liked to read about a vampire taking “care” of Sherman, but at least we know you considered it. I have roots in Georgia. I live on a farm, too, in the Northwest, but we mostly just have orchards and gardens for the family with a lot of extra pasture to roam on and a barn formerly used for horses. It’s hard to have others take care of my stuff and help with my businesses while I’m gone, too, for the same reasons you do. If I DON’T check in, there’s bound to be a snafu. I like your premise and that you considered clothing when setting your stories. I like a lot of eras that way. Which historical era is your favorite to write or research? (Obviously, women didn’t have a lot of rights back when, among other issues, but let’s say you’re looking at an ideal of the time period for argument’s sake.) I love Ancient Egypt, Victorian/turn of the century, 1930s-1950s. Also renaissance and Gothic stylings.

RE comments to me by Jenna #46 & #51. Jenna just wanted to stop back by and say thanks for answering me at length. I figured that even with that many bodies on the farm you had yourself a job keeping track anyway, my mother and my husband do the same thing with my pitifully small family of furry kids let them run wild if I am not around to keep an eagle eye on them. My 2 cats and my one Chihuahua are very dependent on Mommy (me) to make sure they are kept warm, fed, fresh water and litter and like you am very loath to let them be in others care because worry the whole time I am gone…
I also wish had grown up like you raising raccoons, I raised pigeons and do not squirm baby mice and rats. I also had the fun of raising baby chickens in my room in the house a couple of times, quite messy and stinky but it was still fun at the time….
Have a great chat and a lovely weekend I hope and see you on Facebook…

Rachel RN: I was actually talking about writing music with a bass player the other weekend. He asked if I could do it but, unfortunately, the answer is no. I think maybe I could write lyrics (because that’s sort of like poetry) but I could never come up with the music, even humming it. My brain just doesn’t work that way. People who can write music- who have music in their heads the way I have characters in mine- fascinate me. I don’t know how they do it!
Leslie: I don’t know that I wish I had written anyone else’s book but there are certainly lines in a lot of them that I wish I’d thought of first!
Heather C: Well, as I said in the interview, I wanted a story with a little more grit and a little more of a dominant heroine than what I was getting in my favorite historical romances. When I first wrote Wages there weren’t a whole lot of vampire books out there yet, not like there are now. I’d read the ones I wanted to read, Buffy and Angel had both gone off the air, and I suddenly found myself vampire-less. So I figured I’d write my own!
[Reply]
Alana: I don’t think having a butt-kicking heroine in historical times is as much of an issue as a lot of people assume it is. They weren’t all simpering ninnies. Some of my favorite books for a quick read are the Uppity Women series. (If you haven’t seen them there’s Uppity Women of Medieval Times, Uppity Women of Ancient Times, etc.) I mean, I have a great-something-or-another who in the 1920s up and decided she was going to move to Alaska. By herself. She had her own dog sled team and everything– I’ve seen pictures– and I’ll bet she was one butt-kicking lady!
[Reply]
Rachel, Rachel… if you’re gonna live in the south now then you’ve got to get it right. It’s not “covered in” it’s “covered up with.” If you’re extremely busy with something, you’re “covered up with” it. It really wasn’t raining repair guys and they weren’t all up on me (<—I think that may be another one) but now, of course, every time I say that phrase I’m going to hear It’s Raining Men in my head! Thanks! LOL…
[Reply]
REB: I have to agree about Spike. The flashback scenes on Buffy and Angel were some of my favorite scenes and it’s what really got me thinking… why doesn’t anyone write THESE stories? As far as time periods, in general I really enjoy the Tudor Era and the Regency period. Oh, and Charles II. I did watch some of The Tudors on Showtime until they just started making stuff up. I know entirely too much about dear Ol’ Harry to not know when they’re taking creative license and that just makes me nuts!
Beverly G: Well, to each his own. Everyone has an opinion and if this genre isn’t for them, then it isn’t for them. There are plenty of people who love it, so I’m not worried! I don’t see anything offensive about it, though. Are you talking paranormal romance or just romance in general?
Jackie: Yep, that’s exactly it! And the raccoons were fabulous! I would totally have another one in heartbeat.
Stacy: I’m not sure who originally came up with the idea for the Mammoth Books. Trisha Telep is the editor on the ones I’ve been involved with but there are BUNCHES of Mammoth Books and I’m not sure how many are hers. It’s really hard to get a good story into such a short space but I think it’s a nice way to get lots of authors together in one place and let readers get a taste for them. Check my myspace on Valentine’s Day and I’ll post the link to Trisha’s new website, Romance Royale.
Tawania: I didn’t always want to be a writer, but I always have been. As a kid I used to make “books” out of notebook paper and staple them together. Wages of Sin is the first book I wrote (well, wrote and finished).

Donna S: Well, I was in shock so I was really cool about it until I got off the phone with my agent. Then I sort of sat there for a few minutes until it sunk in what was happening. I screamed. I called my boyfriend. I dashed off to tell my parents… and then I called EVERYONE I knew!! LOL!
Ultimate party drink? I used to love strawberry daiquiris until I realized that I can’t drink rum. It upsets my stomach– and not in a drunk way, more in an unfortunate acid reflux sort of way. I drink margaritas now, though there are probably a lot of drinks I’d like better but at the prices they charge for at bars these days I tend to stick with something I know I’ll like. But, honestly, I rarely drink– pretty much only a couple times a year. I don’t like the taste of alcohol enough to want to drink it unless I intend to get drunk. Of course, this makes me a really cheap drunk. A couple margaritas and I’m flyin’ pretty high. Any more than that and there’s an ick factor later! I don’t know how Cin came by her love of whisky… it is so not my alcoholic beverage of choice! I need something fruity that masks the alcohol.

Raquel: Somehow I missed your question earlier. So very sorry! I answered the second one in comment #71. As for the first one– what is something you wouldn’t necessarily know about me– how about a fun answer? I carry a machete in the back seat of my pick-up truck!

Hi,
this is what I’d like to ask you:
if you weren’t a writer what would you think you’d be or would like to be?
I see that you’re a fan of Buffy and Angel. Have you also read any books or graphic novels from this franchise? What do you think of them?
Thanks!

Jenna,
Thanks for the interview. I haven’t read any of your books yet, but now I’ll have to pick one up. Cin sounds like my kind of heroine.
I was wondering if working on your farm gives you inspiration in your writing? At the very least it has to give you abundant enough time to think before jotting things down. Do you find yourself losing a lot of ideas before you get a chance to jot them down?
4. All three done.

Doville: I think after all these years out of an office setting it would be hard to go back to being inside all day. Although on cold, icy days like today that sounds a lot better than bundling up and going to the barn! But I think I’d have to find something that let me be outisde at least part of the time. Even when I was a bank teller I really only enjoyed working the drive-thru so that I could look out those big windows all day (and give out dog cookies to my canine customers).
I read one of the Spike and Dru books once and enjoyed it. I’d really like to read the post-TV “seasons” they have out when I get the time.
Lisa B: Two words: voice recorder! I think every author should have one. Especially people like me who can’t even manage to go to the grocery store with a mental list of 5 things and remember them all when I get there!

Hi Jenna,
I loved that you would choose Gerard Butler for Drummond, I love him.
All of your books sound amazing.

Dina: Oh, me too! I thought he was a wonderful Phantom. And I recently caught 300 on TV– oh yum! It wasn’t a movie I ever intended to watch because I already knew how the story ended and it wasn’t gonna be a happy ending for the Spartans, but I was clicking through channels one night and was like, “Hello! Eye candy!!” LOL…. He just has that rough around the edges quality that isn’t quite slick enough to be a vampire but I think would make a great werewolf.

Hi Jenna. Sorry it took me a while to get back over here — strange day yesterday.
I LOVED Bound by Sin! Great continuation of the series! You managed to both write a walloping good story and give just enough of a hint of things to come to pique the interest. However, now I want to know — any idea when we can expect to see book four?
And Jenna — creased spines and the pages turned down? Really?
[Reply]
Carol: Things are still a bit up in the air contract-wise but I promise there will be more books. I won’t leave you hanging! Yes, creased spines and turned down pages. I’m every librarian’s nightmare. But only on my paperbacks, never the hardcovers! The hardcovers are for research and looking pretty on my bookshelf (and they live on the bookshelves in my living room). The paperbacks are for snuggling up in bed with (and they live on the bookshelves in my bedroom)!

2. I’ve not read any of your stories. But I do love vamps and strong heroines. Since your a new to me author what could you tell me to tempt me to pick up your book. Any idea how many books there will be in this series. And do you have any ideas for more different types of stories that you want to write.
3. done and done
4. done, done, and done.

Your books souns really interesting! Being a private writer, do you work with a CP or bounce ideas off anyone or is it a completely solitary process?
And I’m following you at both Facebook and MySpace! Thanks for the chance to win

Is this a series that you need to start at the beginning? Also does this have a set number or books or is it open ended?
Sounds like an interesting series. I haven’t read any of the books but I think I would really like to.
