Where There’s a Witch by Madelyn Alt
The fifth book of the Bewitching Mysteries series, Where There’s a Witch, is an engaging continuation of the series featuring empath Maggie O’Neill. Residents of Stony Mill are understandably jumpy after an unusual number of murders have taken place recently. When yet another body turns up, the jumpiness is transformed into downright paranoia and fear. The newest murder isn’t all that has the townspeople in a tizzy. A cross filled, buried, secret room is discovered on the grounds of the Grace Baptist Church during a fund raiser and ground breaking ceremony for a new addition to the church. Also at the ceremony is a petition circulated by a fanatical reverend in an attempt to rid the town of evil dark forces. The evil dark forces referenced in the petition are Maggie, her boss Liss and the other members of their ghost hunting group the N.I.G.H.T.S. who were outed so to speak, in the previous book, No Rest for the Wiccan.
Maggie, yet again, finds herself in the middle of the investigation. If that isn’t enough to keep her busy, she also has to contend with a helpful spirit named Elias, the prejudice and paranoia of the town and her ongoing confusion about her love life. The conclusion to each of these plots tie into each other somewhat, and while you may have suspicions of what is to come, you won’t know for sure until the very end.
The Bewitching Mysteries series is one that gets better and better as it goes on. In my review of the previous book, No Rest for the Wiccan, I mentioned that Maggie had started to come into her own and that definitely continues in Where There’s a Witch. She seems to have gained more confidence in herself as a person and as an empath. Maggie has also finally chosen between Tom and Marcus, and I am eager to see how that affects the future books. Ms. Alt has done a superb job with the evolution of the characters and plots in this series, and I am already anticipating the next installment!
