Betrayal by A.C. Mason
The Aequitas were created to be the equalizers for the higher realms. When a Demon or Angel becomes destructive, the Aequitas warriors are called to stop them and dispense justice. A being is transformed into an Aequitas through the infusion of a portion of an Angel’s spirit and a portion of a Demon’s spirit but retain their individual spirit as well. The never-ending struggle is to maintain balance between the three.
Etienne Grant, Chief of Police, is kidnapped by a strange and beautiful being, Auria (known as The General). He learns that he has been chosen to become an Aequitas and to marry. Only a partner-bond will save him from the spirit struggle that can send an Aequitas into madness, and his chosen partner is his kidnapper. However, there are secrets in the society and secrets in each of their souls that could destroy not only their bond, but creation itself.
Betrayal is the first book in the Aequitas series. The author has created a fascinating, absolutely unique complex universe. Betrayal sets the stage and introduces us to the primary characters, who are as unique and evocative as the universe in which they live. The book is such a different and radical concept that the reader must put aside all preconceived notions about creation, the universe and what is an angel or demon. There is a great deal of intentional ambiguity and hidden agendas, so the reader is kept guessing until the very end, which is actually no end at all. Nothing goes easy or smoothly in the universe of the Aequitas and yet it reflects the basic struggle to define the concept of good and evil and the cost of each.
