Interview:

Hi Adrian!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Adrian’s newest book Beneath the Skin.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

AP: The most challenging aspect of writing (for me) is hitting my deadlines. LOL. I tend to be time-challenged, a flaw I’m working to fix. As for the rewarding aspects of writing, there are many. I absolutely love when you fall into the story so deeply that the words are spilling out from the keyboard in a white-hot rush and time disappears. When I hear from a reader that they loved the characters and the story and connected with it in some way - nothing beats it.

BBB: What are your top 3 favorite paranormal books and movies?

AP: A tough question! Hard to choose only 3. Okay, top 3 favorite paranormal books: 1. Wicked Game by Jeri-Smith Ready 2. Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost and number 3 is a tie between Jennifer Estep’s upcoming Spider’s Bite and D.B. Reynolds’s Raphael.

Top 3 paranormal movies: 1. Interview with the Vampire 2. Underworld 3. A three-way tie between Hellboy, Brotherhood of the Wolf, and Lost Boys. Of course, I’d never do anything as sneaky as trying to get past the top 3 with ties or anything. *innocent expression*

BBB: What character (s) in any of your books is most like you?

AP: I think Heather is more like me, though I’m nowhere near as bold and courageous and would most likely shoot my toe off if handed a gun. I’ve gone out target-shooting and have learned how to load guns, etc, but that still wouldn’t prevent me from blasting off a toe during a perilous moment. I share a bit of Von’s sense of humor and Lucien’s sense of guilt. And Dante’s love of music.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

AP: I thought long and hard on this and came up with nothing - unless sexual situations count. I had a ton of those that I never put into the books. LOL. I haven’t come up with anything ridiculous . . . yet. Give me time.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

AP: Most of it I keep in my head (getting very crowded), but lately I’ve been keeping notes that I can refer to quickly while writing. I’m finding notes on who did what or who said what and when more necessary with each book I write.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

AP: Well, of course, the electronic readers reduce the amount of paper and thus, trees, needed to print physical books. Although recycled paper is available, the more trees we have standing, the better.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

AP: I don’t think we know yet what impact electronic readers will have on the bottom line for authors, but I have a feeling it will be positive. Personally, I love books. I love holding them, shelving them, studying the covers. I don’t have that with an e-book. Of course, e-books are easy to travel with and can store tons of books. I think in the long run, e-books will be a positive thing for authors. But I don’t believe they’ll ever replace physical books.

BBB: Can you give us a more in depth look at The Maker’s Song and and the storyline that drives it and what makes it stand out from other Urban Fantasy series on the market today?

AP: The Maker’s Song storyline deals with Dante’s discovery of who and what he is and how that discovery will affect him, everyone close to him, along with the futures of the mortal, vampire, and Fallen worlds. The storyline also deals with the redemptive and restorative powers of love and hope even in the face of darkest evil and unthinking abuse. I feel the characters help the story stand out - Dante’s compassion in spite of all the cruel and heartless things done to him, Lucien’s love for his son and his guilt over not being there to keep him out of the hands of monsters, for not even knowing he existed; Heather’s grasp of a world she hadn’t known existed and her acceptance of it along with her acceptance of Dante; the love and loyalty between the characters. Dante is not only a born vampire, True Blood, he is also a Fallen Maker, someone who can create and destroy, so the story takes on a mythological tone, while still being down and gritty.

BBB: What made you choose New Orleans for the primary setting of your series?

AP: I absolutely love New Orleans. I couldn’t see Dante living anywhere else. Ever since I can remember, New Orleans has captured my imagination. I read about the city and Louisiana and watched documentaries, talked to people who’d lived there. On my first visit to the city, I felt like I’d come home. I hope to have a home there one day.

BBB: What other jobs have you had besides being an author?

AP: I’ve worked as a telephone solicitor (yes . . . shudder . . . but I had kids to feed), a CNA at a nursing home, a security guard (briefly!), a cashier in a grocery store, a bookstore clerk, a receptionist in a psychologist’s office, an accounts receivable clerk, a newspaper deliverer. I think that’s it.

BBB: When worldbuilding for your Maker’s Song series, how much religious and gothic legend influenced your work? What was your inspiration for the terms Fallen Maker and True Blood?

AP: Religious legend played a part, definitely, in my take on Gnostic beliefs about fallen angels and who the God of the Old Testament truly was, what became of him, and who the new God might be. I’ve also worked in bits of lore from other cultures as well. The term Fallen Maker spun naturally from what an elohim creawdwr does - make, create. As for True Blood, that term for a born vampire sprang from vampire knowledge of the Original Bloodline, the first born vampires. I chose words that I thought the races might create and I used a lot of (created) Welsh and Irish terms, since Celtic mythology plays into my worldbuilding - especially with the Fallen. I’d read a book years ago, one written in the early 1900s, about Celtic origins and it claimed that the Celts named themselves as descended from those who had fallen from the sky. *my imagination prances away*

BBB: Music obviously plays a huge role in the Maker’s Song series. How much of an impact does it have on the rest of your life?

AP: Music has a HUGE impact on me. I love it. It enhances my enjoyment of a movie and it’s emotional impact on me - depending on the score or soundtrack. I always listen to music when I write: Nine Inch Nails, Saints of Ruin, AFI, Muse, Batman Begins soundtrack, Stabbing Westward, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford soundtrack . . . just to name a few. I always listen to music in the car, too.

BBB: Which authors works do you enjoy reading and do you have any other authors that you bounce ideas of?

AP: There’s a bunch I enjoy reading! Jeri Smith-Ready, Jeaniene Frost, D. B. Reynolds, Jenna Black, Barb & J.C. Hendee, Phaedra Weldon, Marjorie Liu, J.F. Lewis, Mark Henry, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Kris Nelscott, Stephen King, James Ellroy, James Lee Burke . . .

I don’t have any authors I bounce ideas off of. I do that with some of my first readers - Sean Prescott, in particular. I bounce ideas off of him like he was a basketball backboard. LOL! Once in a while, he’ll calmly ask me if I’m insane after a rambling, “What if . . .?” scenario. Generally the answered is a snorted, “No. Maybe a little. I’m doing it!”

BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

AP: The shift away from vampires is already occurring - though books about vampires and werewolves will continue to come out - to other aspects of the paranormal, including magic, ghosts, elementals, fae, etc. I think the future for paranormal/urban fantasy is still bright. Readers love it. And as a writer, it’s a blast to write and is where my heart lurks anyway.

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?

AP: I have a signing on January 9th at Thurston Book Exchange in Springfield, OR - 5505 Main St. And that’s it for now.

    Carol M.,

I’d love to make it to Dragon*Con one of these days, definitely! It’s on my must attend list.

The new Hoodoo series is about a hoodoo apprentice, Kallie Riviere, who runs up against murder and mystery (including mysteries about herself and a dark, violent moment in her history) and hot, sexy nomads. This series has a little more humor, oh! And it has loup garou as well.

I usually have a general idea of where I want the story to go, but nothing concrete. The characters most definitely influence the storyline and the way events occur. I don’t know how many times I’ve said, “Huh. Never saw *that* coming.” LOL. I wouldn’t have it any other way. ;)

I also listened to Mutter by Rammstein, the soundtrack to The Matrix, Chevelle (first two albums), Stabbing Westward . . . sheesh. I know there’s more that I’m forgetting. ;) Oh! Sisters of Mercy. I think working with Jeri Smith-Ready would kick ass. Dante and Ciara (from Jeri’s WVMP series) have already done a couple of interviews together - which I believe you can access on her website http://www.jerismithready.com.

While I haven’t read any of your books yet thou I do have book 1. As a lover of paranormal series, I usually have to have 3 or 4 in the series before starting it. Just what I need for a weekend at the beach read.
    Three questions–
How many books planned for the “Makers Song” series?
Your June release of “Black Dust Mambo”- new series or stand alone?
What book would you give everyone if you had an endless number of copies and why?(it doesn’t have to be one of your books)

Hi Andrian!!! Thanks for stopping by. I’ve had your books on the top of my list to check out next. I’ve heard lots of great things about them, plus how can you go wrong with a main character named Heather. :)

What first inspired you to be a writer?

    Hi Tina I.,

Certain songs *did* have more influence than others. Sadly, I’m away from my playlist and music at the moment, so I’ll see what I can dredge out of the sandtrap I call my memory. LOL!

In NIN, “And All That Could’ve Been” was a huge influence, as was “Wish,” “Closer,” “The Great Below” was another huge influence. Crap. There’s many more. I’ll have to get back to you on this one this evening, when I have my music right in front of me. LOL!

    Hi Cyrene,

Great to see you here! Yes, being vampire, Von is immortal - unless someone dispatches him by beheading him or torching him, or staking him with a special item (to be revealed later). Lucien, being Fallen, is definitely immortal, but he can still be killed, although it’d be damned hard to do so. He can be unmade as well, or can will himself dead.

Dante’s immortal as well, but can be killed. As for his lifespan, no one is really certain being that he’s a very rare breed. How this will affect his relationship with Heather - well, that’s not an issue they’ve discussed. Yet. ;)

    Hi Adrian,

I was so excited to hear you were the guest for today. I did RSVP yesterday. I have LOVED everyone one of your books so far in the Maker’s Song series and I can’t wait to read “Beneath the Skin”. What a breath of fresh air your books have been! Raw, gritty, and courageous enough to take the reader into the mind of true evil. Any hope that you might head to Dallas for a signing? I really do not have much to say that I haven’t already said in my reviews of your books (check my fb book apps)except, “Please, keep on being brilliant”!

Rachel, I did send out a notice on fb yesterday. Here is the link to where it is still posted http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/profile.php?ref=profile&id=845915470

    Thanks!

Hi Adrian! My name is Tiffany and I am really enjoying learning about you and reading your site. I would like to ask a few questions for our members, most of which are aspiring online writers exploring your same genre.

    1) Many first-time writers begin exploring the paranormal universe to get their feet wet. Do you have any suggestions or tips for first-time writers that are beginning the process of world-building? More specifically, I read that you are beginning to take notes to keep your facts straight, but do you take time to explore the universe before you create it, or do you begin writing and the details fall into place?

    2) For writers beginning the daunting process of trying to get published, are there any tips or techniques you can share to keep confidence when pursuing their publication dreams?

    3) What part of building a character do you enjoy the most?

Thank you so much for your reply. We look forward to sharing the good news about your writing. Congratulations!

    Hi Adrian!

Some of the flashback scenes you’ve written for Dante are so well written, that they’re almost painful to read. Especially since Dante as a character is someone I’ve taken to heart. As a writer, I know how much I love my characters, and I’m pretty sure you feel the same way, because it comes through in your writing. So, is it painful for you to write such visceral scenes for Dante?

    Hi Lisa Richards,

So awesome that you have book 1! And the good news is, book 3 just came out, so now you have enough for a weekend at the beach read. ;) Book 4 will be out the end of this year, and I have more planned for the series.

Black Dust Mambo is the first book in a new series and I have five planned as of now, but will plan more if the series does well.

A book I was lucky enough to see early so I could provide a blurb for it is Jennifer Estep’s SPIDER’S BITE. If I had an endless supply of copies, that’d be the book I’d hand out. The characters drew me in immediately and her worldbuilding is original. I couldn’t put this book down.

What book would you give everyone if you had an endless number of copies and why?(it doesn’t have to be one of your books)

    Hi Heather C.,

Love your name! ;) As for what inspired me to write, I always loved to read. As a kid, I read constantly (still do - just slower with less time), and whenever I finished a story or book I was reluctant to finish because I didn’t want to leave the characters behind, I would re-read it. I realized as a teenager that I wanted to write stories about characters I wouldn’t want to leave behind when it ended either. That’s how it started, writing stories for myself, my sisters, and my friends.

    Hi Tiffany,

Great to hear from you and your writing group! Let’s get your questions answered!

    1) As to the process of world-building, I suggest new writers read as much in the genre they plan to write in as possible (but don’t limit yourselves only to one genre! Read many!) and study what other writers have done, and watch movies and TV for story and world-building. Consider what fascinates you and ‘what if?’.

I generally begin writing and the details fall into place. The subconscious amazes me every single time. Now that I have three books worth of world-building established, it saves me a lot of time to keep notes so I don’t have to go flipping through the books again to verify what I *think* is right. LOL.

2)Get as much information about potential publishers and editors as possible from http://www.writersdigest.com and http://www.publishersmarketplace.com and have reliable first readers. Always believe in yourself - no matter what anyone else says, and follow your heart. Always. If one editor doesn’t like your novel, go to the next. That is a single person’s opinion, no more. Believe in yourself! And always keep learning.

3)Figuring out what lines they won’t cross or actions they won’t forgive. Of course, that comes from figuring out who they are - their life in every detail. Childhood, nightmares, love, heartbreak, betrayals. I love creating characters. Period. :)

Best of luck to you and all the writers in your group!

Thanks for your comments on Dante’s flashback scenes - it’s so good to know that they affect you as much as they do me. Yes, it’s often painful to write such visceral scenes for Dante. Often my throat gets tight, and sometimes I cry (yes, I’m a pansy). I often whisper apologies to Dante as I’m writing one of those scenes. I don’t think he believes me, however. LOL.

    Hi Melia M.,

    Thanks for joining us!

What do I do when I have writer’s block? Oh, I’m famous for my screaming, wall-punching tantrums followed by a sulking fit while huddled under a blankie while my cats roll their eyes. LOL. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a true writer’s block, but I *have* had times when the story came to a screeching halt because something didn’t feel right, but I couldn’t figure out the problem. Whenever that happens, I turn to my spiral bound notebook and start writing to myself in longhand. Things like: “Okay, what’s bothering you about this scene? Character X is doing such and such and character Y reacted this way.”

Then (as if possessed or a medium) I answer, “See, that’s the problem. Why the hell would character Y do that?” and before long I have the problem figured out and I’m back to writing.

The book that was the hardest to write so far was Beneath the Skin. The reason for that was while I was writing it,I broke my ankle (which needed surgery) and suffered a pulmonary embolism. Between recuperation and pain killers, it took me a long time to get it done.

    Hi Heidi,

    Thanks for joining us!

Readers can expect more development in the relationship between Dante and Heather, including the problems they face; Dante and Lucien will have to work on forging a new relationship; Heather will look into her mother’s long-ago murder, seeking both answers and the real killer; she also has her bi-polar sister to deal with as well. Annie will have a huge surprise to reveal to everyone. Von will be working to unite the llygaid and the nomads behind Dante for the war that is brewing between mortal, vampire, and Fallen powers.

Dante needs to choose a path. And the Morningstar (and Gabriel) will continue to try to manipulate Dante and those nearest him. Dante needs to be bonded by another person in order to keep his balance . . .

    Hi Darchole,

No, my world-building isn’t entirely fictional. It’s set in New Orleans, and I’ve traveled there - same with Seattle and Portland. If I haven’t been to a city, I research it. Of course, Gehenna is entirely fictional. That said, the New Orleans and other cities I depict in the books are alternative versions of the real things since the storyline is in the near-future, so some things are different. Like a West coast FBI forensics lab. One doesn’t exist now - there’s only the one in Quantico, VA, but I extrapolated the need for one on the West coast one day.

    Hi Koren,

I have little Goth dolls I collect, so when I finish a manuscript, I reward myself with one. It never hurts to have small goals and big goals. I don’t see why you can’t have both.

Give yourself a treat whenever you hit your daily word count or your weekly word count or both! Treat yourself when you finish a manuscript! Make the process a series of treats. LOL. Whatever works. ;)

    Hi Paula,

The upcoming series isn’t directly related to The Maker’s Song, but it *is* in the same world. The focus, however, is different - hoodoo, loa, hexes, loup garou . . . It’s not out of the realm of possibilities that character from one series might make a brief appearance in the other series.

I hope you enjoy A Rush of Wings!

Yes, sometimes I come up with an idea I just love and totally want to use, but as the book goes along, I realize there’s no way it’ll fit into the story. I always keep those ideas, planning to use them in the next book and that usually works out just fine.

    Hi Heather Ann,

When I chose Dante’s name, I had no idea it would be popping up all over the place and had already appeared in other books. LOL. I chose that name because it seemed perfect for him. Plus, given the circumstances under which his mother named him - it was more than appropriate.

I search name meanings before I finally choose one for a character. It needs to suit them and it doesn’t hurt if it looks and/or sounds good. Names are very important!

I promised BadAzzKelana earlier that I’d answer her question about who I’d like to see play Dante and the gang if the books were made into a movie or TV series, but alas, I don’t have an answer.

Dante would need to be played by an unknown, that I’m relatively sure of, but as for the others? I hang my head in shame. I can’t think of anyone. If someone was to toss ideas at me, I’d have an opinion on whether they’d be right or not, but other than that . . .

I need to start pondering who would play Heather, Von, Lucien, Silver, Annie, and Simone.

as an aspiring writer myself, how do you, or did you, balance working full time and writing?

    Hey Connery,

My cats are giving me evil looks. LOL. Pay attention to us! Wow! Thanks for the nomination on Twitter! :)

Balancing a full time day job and writing can be tough. You have to realize that you are essentially working two full time jobs and treat your writing time as you would your job hours. Put the hours in and no goofing off until breaktime. Like anything, it requires practice and discipline. It never hurts to set daily and weekly goals and to treat yourself - a special toy, going to see a movie, new music - when you hit them.

Good luck with your writing! Hugs!

I like your movie choices. Sexual situations can be ridiculous, which makes for lots of fun most of the time. I’d like to make it to New Orleans someday. I think I’d get along with the place. I’m a music lover, too. Soundtracks can make for some great backgrounds. :) If I was available, I’d head over to your Oregon book signing; we’re definitely readers here (and in the northwest in general).

Thanks for being here today! I like seeing what’s available from authors I haven’t read yet on Bitten By Books. This is a great way to do it. And the prizes are really nice.

    Gday Adrian,

I recently discovered your books a few months ago and fell in love with them. Dante is such a great character. I love how good he is even though so much has happened to him. I’m waiting to get Beneath the Skin.

When you first thought of Dante as a character did you already know all the bad things that were going to happen to him, or were they just progressive?

Don’t know if any has already asked this but how many books will there be in the series?

    Hi Adrian,

I love the covers, but I have to ask, why does the tattoo keep moving? Maybe I’m weird, the different models don’t throw me at all but the tattoo changing bugs me. Completely not important, but I’m asking anyway. =D You mentioned the importance of name meanings in an earlier comment. Is Adrian Phoenix your real name or a pen name, and any special meaning or story behind it? I have a second name in my parents’ language that translates to “spring’s sunlight.” My mom thought I was born in the spring because she was in sunny florida at the time. February’s always been a winter month in my mind, but it’s a good name. I find the stories behind names interesting, and I thought there might be one with yours.

When I came up with Dante, I knew some of the things that had happened to him, but not all. Other parts have his past have revealed themselves to me as I’ve gone.

Thanks so much for your support!

Here’s the funny thing, the model has been the same on every cover. As to why her tattoo keeps moving, I have no idea. Maybe the artist was having fun. ;)

Yes, Adrian Phoenix is my real name. There’s no real story behind it other than it being androgynous enough to suit either a girl or boy. :)

Hi Adrian - I’ve read your first book and loved it. I thought it was a trip that you’ve worked as a CNA before (I’m assuming that’s certified Nurse’s aide?) I did that also when I was younger and more fit. I worked in a nursin home, one of the best places I’ve seen/smelled. Did you work in a hospital, nursing home or doctor’s office. Working in a nursing home or convalescent hospital as they’re also called, is one of the hardest, yet rewarding jobs I’ve ever had. Not the funnest, not glamorous, but there were some wonderful moments as well as some back-breaking and heart-breaking moment. There are still some patients that stand out in my mind 25 years later.

My other question to you - Even though I enjoy the characters in your Dante series, is there a chance that you might write (or have you already) a different series or YA novel?

I thought I’d pop in real quick and answer the last group of questions.

I worked in a nursing home as a certified nurse’s aide and worked on the wing that housed all the dementia and Alzheimer’s patients.

    Hi Dovile,

No, no characters have been based on real people, even partially. Now, sometimes a character is *inspired* by a real person - the way they look or move, something they say that catches me - but the character I create is in no way like them.

I’ve never considered creating a character based on myself. I think that’d be a pretty boring character. LOL.

    Hi Shell,

Brotherhood of the Wolf is a French film and it’s great. Rent it, if you can.

I have first readers who go over my manuscript before I turn it into my editor. Two of them aren’t writers, but they are voracious readers and know what works, the other two are writers. In each case, I’ve chosen them because I respect their opinions.

I generally don’t use other authors for sounding boards. I also don’t edit much before turning in my manuscript. My editor will let me know if anything needs to be changed or fixed.

    Thanks! :)
