Release Party, NOOK Contest and Chat with Author Donna Grant

Posted under Chat, Contests, Guest Bloggers, Site News by Site Hostess on Tuesday 5 January 2010 at 12:43 pm

PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion of this event is now CLOSED. The winner will be drawn an contacted later via email.

Thanks everyone for joining me in my virtual release party for Dangerous Highlander!

I’ve been asked many times why historical and why paranormal? I’ve always been drawn to historical romances whether they’re Regency, Medieval, Victorian or whatever. If it’s historical, I read it.

I feel the same way about paranormal. I love when paranormal is added into stories, so when the Dark Sword series came into being, it was without a doubt going to have paranormal aspects in the stories. I just didn’t realize it would take over the book. :)

To give the series more depth, I created my own lore and legend. It all began with the “what if?” game. What if Rome couldn’t invade northern Britain because of the Celts? What if the Druids helped the Celts? What if magic was involved? What if the Druids called up ancient gods? What if the Celts then had the gods trapped inside them?

The more I delved into the series, the more the lore and legend helped to shape the books. With Druids, magic, ancient gods, and immortal Highlanders the ride has been eventful and wonderful.

Do you enjoy books with legends and lore? What do you think is the appeal?

Hi Donna! Thanks for being her with us today! This book sounds very interesting and has been added to my TBR list. I really do like it when books have legend and lore in it. I think it can really add something more to the story when there is more behind the story. It sort of gives it an extra driving force in my opinion, if it is done right.

What made you decide to choose the Druid myths or lore?

I R.S.V.P’d…and it seems you have another cyber stalker! But that’s a good sign, right? Cyber fan sounds better! LOL

Yup, I’m the gal who keeps sending requests to the Sony Estore, asking them to stock this awesome, highlander sexy goodness. I am most likely to give up waiting and buy it from All Romance soon (but I have GC’s for sony that are burning holes in my pockets!)

I LOVE the premise, and can’t wait to get stuck in. Hope the sales are going great for you, and congrats on the release.

I think the appeal, for me, for lores and legends, is, as you have already said… what if? What if all those magical legends were based on real stories. What if. Two very strong words in fiction!

    I voted for BBB, too.

    Lara Adrian
    Shana Abe
    Lisa Kleypas
    Christina Dodd
    JR Ward
    Larissa Ione
    Lisa Renee Jones
    Suzanne Enoch
    Kresley Cole
to name just a few. I could go on for days!

Oh, favorite paranormal creature? That’s a good question. I’d have to say something different than the norm. Maybe like immortal Highland warriors with gods trapped inside them? lol. ;)

    What is your favorite?

  24. Comment by Donna Grant — January 5, 2010 @ 2:01 pm

Hi, Fallon - oh, thank you. I’m so glad you enjoyed Dangerous Highlander.

I’ve had many emails asking about Quinn. Some are quite upset his book isn’t second. But he’s got to be tormented just a bit more. :)

As for my favorite Warrior? I’d have to say its a toss between Quinn and Phelan and Charon (you’ll get to meet Phelan and Charon in book three). Although, I love all the Warriors. Each time I begin writing their story I think “this one is going to be my favorite.” Then I write then next one and think the same thing. :)

I love writing historical romances, and I’m even more thrilled that my editor is letting me put so much paranormal in the stories. So, I’d have to say though I love historical and I’m a sucker for contemp/para, if I find a historical paranormal, I’m sold!

Hi, Heather C - Isn’t Clash of the Titans awesome?! And they’re remaking it. I can’t wait. It has the hunky Sam Worthington in it. Yummy!!

As to why Druids? I think maybe it was the conflicting research I found on them. If you go by what the Romans said (and they were writing history at the time, so makes you wonder what they left out!) the Druids did human sacrifices and all kinds of henious things.

Then you have other accounts where the Druids were spiritual leaders and aided kings and leaders with their wisdom and healing abilities.

Makes you stop and think which account, if either, is what the Druids really where. It allowed me to play the “what if?” game. What if the Druids had magic? What if there were two sects of Druids - good and evil? What if that magic could change history?

I love the “what if” game. :)

Welcome to BBB Donna! I haven’t read your books either but they look awesome! I too like stories with legend and/or myth in them. I think it gives the story (when it’s done right of course) a line that must be followed but also gives the characters some wiggle room. They either must fulfill some part of the legend, try to find a way around it or deal with what it brings.

I was not sure I would make this in time but here I am. I am looking at ice and snow for the past two weeks and now just about tired of it. I can not complain after seeing what other areas got. I have been home doing alot of reading and entering chats, contests and whatever else strikes my fancy. It has been a lot of fun. I was glad to see your party and chat today as I am here for most of the day. I have pretzels, chips and maybe some left over birthday cake if anyone cares for some. I had two cakes given to me yesterday for my big 63th year celebration. Donna your books are really haunting me and hope to get them soon. I was informed of cut hours for Jan and Feb so I have to put a hold on things but I will keep my list current and hope to be lucky to find some later. Cutting work hours in winter is rough but I try not to complain and just be thanksful for what I have. Now will go and stop back to see rest of the comments in a little while. susan L.

Hi! Just want to say the cover is great and any book with highlanders is always put on my list. Can’t wait to read it.

I love being introduced to new worlds with legends and folklore. Two of my favorite movies of all time are Legend (1985) with Tom Cruise and Labyrinth (1986) with David Bowie. I’ve always admired writers who can come up with such vivid and awesome new worlds and creatures.

    Thanks for visiting us today!

Hi Marie R - I didn’t research lore in particular. In some of my other books I delved into fantasy romance, and when doing that, it helps to learn to build worlds.

So, when I began the Dark Sword series, I just let my imagination go. Through the years I’d done a ton of research on Druids, Celts, and Medieval Scotland. From there it was easy to build my world.

Hey, Shell B - I tend to write pretty fast, so I manage to stay ahead of schedule. No cruch time, exactly, but there’s nothing better than a great Italian meal matched with an awesome bottle of wine. :)

You know, my editor asked me if I used beta readers. Apparently a lot of authors do, but I never have. Hmm…maybe something I should look into.

Hi Donna! I haven’t read any of the Dark Sword series yet, but they sound interesting. ^_^ I’m looking forward to reading the series. I was going through your website, specifically the Beginning, and I was wondering, are all the gods they bound in the warriors bad? Are there good ones? After all, they called them up from hell and had to seal them inside the warriors so it sounds like they are. I’ve always the disliked the absolutely evil/absolutely good division and prefer characters that are gray. Are there specific myths and stories that contributed to your set of gods? I love mythology. I took a latin course back in high school just because they also taught the roman and greek myths. =D Are all your gods made up or are some of them based on gods from actual belief systems?

Let’s see…I love to collect swords and daggers. Oh, and my first vehicle was my dad’s full size truck that I had to sit on books to see over the steering wheel. (I’m rather short - or vertically challeneged as my hubby teases me.)

Hi Denise V - I grew up dancing (ballet, jazz, tap). My dream was to study ballet and be a professional dancer. Had my parents agreed, I’d have gotten to study at the Royal Academy of Dance in London, but I was only 13 and they said no. Who knows how my life would have turned out had they let me go.

I always had a book with me, so its really no wonder that my dream soon switched from ballet dancer to author. :)

Hi Sabrina N - no, not all the Warriors are evil. Some are, just as some of the Druids are. Lucan, the hero in Dangerous Highlander, has a god inside him, and he’s not bad. And I love shades of gray as well. You’ll find that in my books.

All the gods I used are made up. No specific myths, but each god does give a Warrior a specific power others don’t have. After all, the gods of myth were powerful beings. ;)

Hey Donna- Haven’t read the Highlander yet but I love the “what if?” point of view. I fell in love with paranormal romance awhile back and have always loved historical fiction so your series(and I love a series) went straight to my wishlist.
    My question-
What book would you give everyone if you had an endless number of copies and why?(it doesn’t have to be one of your books)

I do enjoy books that incorporate legend and lore in their stories. Both were very important in early civilizations and certainly helped shape the actions of leaders and the common folk. You are right, whoever is writing the history gets to put their spin on the facts. “What if?” works as well as anything else in speculating what the truth was.
Good luck with the release of DANGEROUS HIGHLANDER. My TBR pile is impossible, so I’m afraid it is going on my To Buy List unless I happen to be in the bookstore and can’t stop myself (which is why my TBR pile is so big).

Happy birthday, Donna! I am also vertically challenged, but hey, that’s not a problem for writers. :) I love to dance, too. But I bet a lot of people are glad you ended up as a writer. :) Yes, especially Greek myths, history and twists on mysteries like Jack the Ripper (there are many fictional versions of that with paranormal combined). I think a lot of us might be able to look up to heroes of old, maybe to emulate or improve upon ourselves, or maybe it’s just good reading.

    Hi Donna!
I didn’t know about your works, but this book sounds really intriguing! To answer your question yes, I like books about legends and lore. Personally, I’ve always been interested in mithology. I think the appeal of that kind of books may be that people face different sets of beliefs, concepts and stories. In these cases it’s the reader who decides to what degree he/she believes there to be some truth backing up the legends, if ever.

Hi Kristen C - I don’t use a chart, but I do keep two spiral notebooks near me at all times. One keeps track of my page count for the day while the other is a series notebook. It has the characters, their attributes, the places the book takes place in and other characters and how they fit into the book.

It helps to keep me on track in a series. :)

Hi Amy S - Thank you!

As for research, I didn’t do a whole lot since I’ve written Scottish Medievals for awhile and the information tends to stick with you. However, I’m always looking through my research books. You never know what you might stumble across. :)

Hi Heidi S - I’m not sure where I get my love of Highlanders. I tease my hubby that I married him just for his Scottish name. I’ve not gone to Scotland *yet*. Hubby is a tad worried that once I get there he won’t get me home.

    And he’s right. :D

I enjoy books with legends and lore!! It makes me think “Are they real? No, really, are they?” and makes me want to research their history more. It’s mindboggling, trying to think if the characters in the legends exist and the events really did happen!

I know I have asked you this last question before privately but thought that you might get some more checking out this series with a question asked in this forum.

Hi, Kimi - thank you for the bday wishes. I look at writing like any job (just a job I really love). I have pages that I have to get done each day, and some days are easier than others. I don’t make myself have to write perfect pages on the first draft. That’s what revisions are for, so I take that into consideration. However, on those days that it just isn’t flowing, usually emailing my friends will help get me back on track. :)

Hey Donna! Thanks for coming to visit with us today! And I have to agree - I’m a history junkie and can’t get enough of it sometimes. And it doesn’t matter if it’s real history or fictionalized either. I also love it when legends and lore are mixed into a story, espeicially one with paranormal elements.

    The boring stuff:
I’ve been a long-time subscriber to Donna’s newsletter and a friend on FB. Just followed her on Twitter as well (asphaltcowgrrl). I voted on the P&E polls as well as the weekly Paranormal Poll. And, as always, BBB is on my permanent blogroll at http://www.readinsomethingcrazy.blogspot.com

    hi Donna!
I’ve never read a highlander story before so I’m not exactly sure what it means. But I like the cover and always look forward to trying something new in books, and I love legends and lore!I think the appeal lies in the human need to feel connected to our past, as well as wanting to feel there’s magic out there too. Ive 2 questions:
-Do you or your family have any personal family legends or lore?
-In reference to ur answer to Shell B, what’s a beta-reader exactly?
    It sounds fun!lol

I have another book to add to my TBR list…which is way too long already.

For the legends and lore question… I like books that have really great characterization and/or worldbuilding…if legends and lore are part of the story that’s fine, but I don’t miss it if the story really has no history element built into it.

Thanks for being at BBB, Donna, and for offering such a great prize. Generally, I don’t care for books with historic settings but I do enjoy reading about the highlanders. If a book focuses on a legend, like King Arthur or the Druids or whatever, then I might pick it up if something else about the book grabs me.

Beverly G - Personally, I thoroughly enjoy the sexy men on the covers. To me, that’s a romance. I know there are those who are embarrassed at the covers, but its covers that sometimes grab my attention. A sensual couple will grab my attention every time. Not to mention a hunky guy. :)
