Standing on top of a dam in Mexico with an orange cat watching her closely, Esmeralda thinks back to the struggles and unfilled promises of her life then jumps. Instead of the sweet obliteration of death that she was hoping for, she wakes in a hospital, stripped of her memories. An old woman, Dona Flor, claims that she is Marisol, her granddaughter, and takes her to her home in a small village. Marisol has been given a second chance at life and sometime later learns that the real Marisol died as a small child. Dona Flor believes Esmeralda is the reincarnated spirit of Marisol.

Marisol begins to learn the sweetness of life and meets Alexander Cruz, an American actor filming in Mexico. Despite a rocky start, they fall in love and marry, and soon Marisol is expecting a child. But tragedy strikes again, and for a second time, Marisol loses her memory. She forgets her life as Marisol and finds herself being Esmeralda, eight months pregnant with no memory of the child’s father. Once again, she start life over, and once again, she and Alexander find each other. They have been connected in a dream world, Mexiflor, since childhood, and fate will not let them separate.

The Way to Mexiflor is a story of love everlasting and triumph over obstacles. It was a grand idea, but the execution was very convoluted and choppy. Both characters are so filled with anger that there is little room or desire for love. It was difficult to get emotionally attached to either of them or the story because anger and mistrust permeates every interaction they have. I felt this was less a love story than an ongoing battle.
