The Brotherhood: To Lay or to Slay by Elizabeth Miette
This book was a witty and fun adventure for a strong and sexy leading lady who must chose in which path lies her true destiny.
Alexandra Russell hates her dead end job, hates that she has no chance to rise above it all and get promoted or leave to find better things. Known as a child genius, her abilities and strength are not being tested to their full potential at the dead end job. When she goes out for a night on the town with her friend, she finds herself dancing then leaving with a man too hot to be true. Too good to be true seems to have summed him up because she is attacked and taken unconscious to his hidden lair. Saved from the monster with fangs, she is still reeling from her attack and the fact that everyone knows her name but she has never met any of these men before.
Her savior, the Slayer Richmond, has been watching over her for years. A virgin, even after a failed attempt in college, an attempt that is still only a vague blur from her memory loss of that year, Alex is the one both the good and the bad know as The Chosen.
The Brotherhood, a group of slayers out to decapitate and destroy all vampires, is on the side of the good. Roland is one of the Darkness, a vampire that has gotten close to Alex on more than one occasion and wants her to become his Queen.
Alex accepts the world she is now cast into and lives and trains with the Slayer. Her family and friend’s potential to be in danger keeps her predominately to himself as they learn from each other and find solace in each others arms. Secrets about new abilities she is gaining are kept from Richmond as they train by day and make love all night. Alex has fallen for the Slayer, but he will never give in and tell her how he feels, so she leaves and goes to someone who may be able to help her. Nanny is a member of the Brotherhood, but something else is both different and familiar about how she acts.
When Nanny is brutally slaughtered, it is Alex that the Brotherhood blames for her death, and overhearing their conversation, Alex assumes that Richmond agrees with them and is out to get her. Feeling her heart break, Alex runs straight to the one who she believes will help make everything go away, Roland.
Richmond cannot believe that his love has given in to the Darkness but is being held accountable when the Brotherhood accuse Alex of killing Nanny and double dealing with the Darkness. When she puts the pieces together and figures out how she is gaining new abilities, Alex must again chose between the two groups. Will she be in time to help her true love and will she be able to figure out who really are the good guys in this battle?
I found this story an amusing and sexy romp. Elizabeth has created a very interesting world where the good and the evil are not black and white and where sex gains you power in more ways than one.
