Coyote Non Grata by Lena Austin
Rody is a coyote shifter banished from his pack for an offense he did not commit. Wounded and weary from a fight with his pack leader, Rody finds shelter in a park ranger’s cabin. When Jeff returns to his cabin, he senses another presence. Jeff had heard the Comanche tales of the Shifting Brethen but not one of his people has seen a shifter for over 200 years. Now, he is about to not only witness a shifting but also play an important role in his park’s coyote pack.
While the sex between Rody and Jeff is predictable, the build up is unique and touching as Jeff coaxes the hurt coyote, and then the young man, to trust him. The cabin’s intruder and the message he delivers are also surprises that add to the story. The pack members’ acceptance of the conflict’s conclusion comes too easily, and the ending, though uplifting with a sense of destiny and hopefulness, seems too rushed.
