Chaos Forged by Kaitlyn O’Connor
When a global pandemic cuts off communications between Earth and the International Space Station Pegasus, Dr. Danielle Stevens and the other nine members of the crew must decide how to react. Their supplies are running low, and a huge space craft of unknown origin has just pulled along side them with an offer of help. Only after they are safely back on a near-deserted Earth and in the company of a small landing party of aliens do they learn the truth. The ship is an advance invasion vessel from a federation headed by despotic scavengers. There is the possibility of light at the end of the dark tunnel of the future because said scavengers have enemies, some of whom are on the ship and in the landing party.
Kaitlyn O’Connor has long been a favorite of mine for sexy, creative, and innovative stories. Her plots forge forward with determination, and her characters are revealed as layer after layer of complexity is stripped away. Lymra Sabin Au-tere is such a character. His homeworld had been taken over by the Grundts, the official name of the scavengers, when the planet had been at its most vulnerable. As the oldest of four clones, Sabin has assumed the role of head counter-revolutionary. He is also an alien and as such, we quickly come to see Earth culture through his eyes. His love interest, Dr. Danielle Stevens, provides an avenue for exploration of attitudes, actions and reactions. A rival for Danielle Steven’s attention is Captain Nick LaRoche, the womanizing ex-lover who wants a second chance. The interpersonal relationships provide a counter-balance to the post-apocalyptic invasion plot.
O’Connor can be counted on to bring her best game. She uses her mastery of craft to provide the reader with a full package: exciting plot, interesting characters, and thoughtful premise. Readers who appreciate character internalization and introspection will find both in spades in Chaos Forged.
