Phantom Desires by Bianca D’Arc
The third installment of the Brotherhood of Blood series focuses on Carly, the good friend of both Lissa and Kelly, the female main characters of the two previous novellas, and Dmitri, the dream-walking master vampire introduced in book two. For over a century, Dmitri has lived underground beneath a Wyoming homestead that had been in the same family for generations. When the farm is sold, Dmitri must determine whether or not the new owner is someone he can work out an arrangement with. Discovering that the new owner is a lovely lady who happens to be a computer systems analyst for the college where he teaches, Dmitri decides to spy on her via dreams. It does not take long for the two to become lovers and immediately discover that Carly is the One for Dmitri, his destined mate.
As the previous novella did, “Phantom Desires”, the shortest in the trilogy, consists primarily of sex scenes with little else going on. The author presents the reader with an interesting concept and world but does not explore it sufficiently. One of the more frustrating aspects of the last two segments of the series for this reviewer remains the lack of follow-up to the mystery introduced in the first book. However, the fact that three good friends all ended up as “the One” for three high-ranking vampires is mentioned, which may have something to do with the earlier unresolved mystery, though no connection is alluded to. This installment does introduce the intriguing shapeshifter culture, thereby setting the stage for what seems to be a forthcoming series, one perhaps tangentially related to the Brotherhood of Blood.
