Eternal Vigilance by Gabrielle S. Faust

****½

Tynan Llywelyn wakes up from a sleep he thought would go on forever to a world that changed drastically while he had been out. Tynan does not want to be drawn back into the world he had left behind, but it forces him to in the form of his “father” and the darkness that wasn’t of his kind’s making.

Tynan is a dark character - in part because of what he is (vampire) and in part due to the fact that he is at war with himself and his loss of belief in what he, himself, had created. His darkness is as much emotional as it is physical, and it is that which makes him appealing.

Malakai, introduced later in the book, is a good opposite to Tynan. They make good counterpoints not because of their differences (i.e., their backgrounds) but because of their similarities. Neither one is trusting, each has his own reasons for working with the Phuree, and the odds are even as to whether this will help or hinder the cause.

I liked the book, hence my 4.5/5 rating, but not everyone might. The main reason for this might be that the book can be perceived as being very much “doom and gloom”. It is that dreary pervasiveness that makes the story work. Tynan is a character that had reached his breaking point, was an outcast, long before the story’s beginning and yet the very beings that cast him out now want his help - and they prey on the very humanity that Tynan managed to retain in order to draw him in. An excellent read.
