When this first installment in the Brotherhood of Blood series begins, vampire Atticus Maxwell questions his existence, convinced he will never find “the One,” his soul mate. Lissa, recently laid off from a downsizing at work, plans to attend a job conference to get her life back on track. The two meet on the bus going to Lissa’s conference and both feel an immediate spark. Before they have a chance to even think much about one another, the bus crashes, killing all aboard but the two of them. Gravely injured himself, Atticus pulls Lissa to safety and manages to partly heal her concussion. When she regains consciousness, Lissa learns of Atticus’s true nature and, somewhat dazed from her head injury, accepts the information more calmly than she typically would have. Though they discover that they are indeed soul mates, able to hear each other’s thoughts, complications appear regarding the bus accident that Atticus and Lissa must figure out.

Though some aspects of the narrative are difficult to believe, such as Lissa’s declaration that she loves Atticus even more than she does her family after only two days, the author does an admirable job of expressing what Lissa means to Atticus: “She was a bright beacon of hope in his otherwise dark world” (Ch. 2). Compulsively readable, the novella maintains the suspense of the mystery regarding the bus accident, and the cliff-hanger ending guarantees that the reader will be anxious to get to book two.
