Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong
Paige Winterbourne is not having a good year, and it doesn’t appear to be getting any better. Still reeling from her mother’s death and her expulsion from the American Coven of Witches, Paige is enlisted to investigate a number of attacks on young family members of the Cabals. Normally she and Lucas, her sorcerer boyfriend, would steer clear of anything Cabal related, but this case hits close to home.
Every step Paige takes towards solving this case tangles her deeper into the web of Cabal life, specifically the one run by her boyfriend’s father, Benicio Cortez. But soon Paige finds out the sorcerers are the least of her worries: she must survive a run in with a thirsty Celtic deity, demons, and maybe the most intimidating being of all—Eve Levine, Savannah’s deceased mother.
Reading a Kelley Armstrong novel is like falling into a pile of soft pillows and finding your worst nightmare. This is the second time I’ve read Industrial Magic
but the first since becoming a mother. The book affected me more this time around since much of the violence surrounds children. Kelley has my respect for handling the issue with class, staying away from more explicit descriptions in favor of showing the emotion in the actions of the other characters.
When Paige Winterbourne first emerged as a narrator in Dime Store Magic, I was wary. Elena left big shoes to fill, and I wasn’t sure a timid witch was up to the task.
Industrial Magic
proved I had nothing to worry about. Paige grew into her potential in this novel, not only as a witch but as a character. The way she tackled the case, her relationship to Lucas, and her dealings with other supernaturals—specifically a very grumpy vampire—made this a 5 tombstone novel and left the door wide open for a book surrounding Eve, my favorite half-demon black witch.
