Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey

*****

Jessica Packwood was looking forward to her senior year. Things were finally coming together with the boy she had a crush on, she had a shot in 4-H competition, and she enjoyed being a mathlete. Then Lucius Vladescu appears in her life, claiming that she comes from a royal lineage and that he is her betrothed…oh, and she is a vampire. Jessica is logical and thinks that vampires and the whole supernatural thing is a load of garbage. But as she learns more about her past, the more she begins to accept the truth. Only she begins to accept it a little too late. Lucius is enjoying being an American teenager and going through a rebellious stage. It will be up to Jessica to prove to Lucius that she can handle whatever the vampire clans throw at her and to keep the pact that was formed at their birth together.

I have had this book in my review stack for quite a while, and since I was on a reading young adult kick, it got moved to the top. Then I wished that I had not waited so long to read it. Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side is a well written young adult novel. I almost enjoyed it more than reading Twilight. Okay, at the risk of causing heresy, I did enjoy the story much more than Twilight (gasp!). Lucius is a dark, brooding vampire and that makes him an exciting character to follow. I loved the humor that came out in his letters home to his uncle. But, unfortunately, that light-hearted side began to disappear throughout the book, and I found myself missing it. I was glad to see that Jessica finally woke up, even if it was almost too late. But it added to the suspense of the story and made the ending that much more interesting. I do not know when the next book is due out, but I know I am already on pins and needles anticipating it. So go out and add this book to your reading pile as soon as you can.

Book Excerpt: “The undead can really screw up your senior year . . .

Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancé. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction.”
