Twilight’s Edge: Act 1 by Jo Atkinson
Twilight’s Edge, Daytime TV’s first gothic soap opera, ended amongst confusion in 1977. The death of its star, Rex Flanigan, ended any hope of a reunion and started rumors of a curse surrounding the show. Years later, his son, Ryan, hopes to break the curse and continue his father’s legacy.
When Veronica “Roni” Evans is contacted to audition for the role of Daphne St. Claire in the new Twilight’s Edge, she’s sure it’s her big break. The meeting with Ryan goes better than planned, not only securing her role but kindling a passion that neither of them expected.
The honeymoon period for Roni and Ryan doesn’t last long—the curse of Twilight’s Edge strikes quickly on the new set. A car accident, a missing script, and a ghost sighting are just the beginning of what is to come for Roni, Ryan, and the rest of the crew. Something is trying to keep the show from being filmed, and Roni is its next target.
Twilight’s Edge: Act 1 by Jo Atkinson is as engaging as any TV soap opera. The situations the characters are put in seem a bit convoluted but are written well enough that they are still enjoyable. Roni and Ryan fall in love quickly, fall into bed just as quickly, but manage to ring as a true couple. I have a feeling that there’s a reason why they feel so deeply for each other and hope the explanation will be given in the sequel. As it is, their relationship was a high point to reading this, especially the way they gain strength from each other and shed all pretenses during their love making.
I debated for a while on what rating to give Twilight’s Edge, and finally settled on 3.5 tombstones. It kept me riveted and up into the wee hours of the morning, but the ending caught me off guard. At first I was angry—how dare the story end when it was just getting good! Then the rational part of my brain kicked in and excitement overtook my anger. There’s a sequel! And when Twilight’s Edge: Act II releases, you can beat that I’ll be one of the first to get my hands on it.
