A Ruthless Good by Susan Kelley
When the moral, noble warrior Roth and his family were taken captive by the malevolent, misogynistic Parlanians, he was horrified by their treatment of the women living among them and experienced firsthand why his people rebelled against the Parlanians. Fleeing them by throwing himself into an icy river, Roth expected to die.
Claudia Turan, the silver-haired warrior queen of the Realm, an independent civilization unaware of the evil of the Parlanians, had no idea what to expect from the blonde stranger she pulled from the river. His claims of the frontiers of her lands were wild, but even more unbelievable were her own feelings for him. Before either knew what was happening, they were embarking on a quest to free the people of Parlania and exploring a relationship neither could have dreamed of.
This is a fascinating book at a dystopian world that resembles our own in too many ways to not be unsettling. The characters managed to be strong without becoming two-dimensional and they have accessible, realistic emotions. The romance was nicely played out, and I felt a real connection to the emotions and inner debates the story’s leads had for and about each other.
I had a few moments where I felt overwhelmed by the number of new names and “countries” the author threw out in short amounts of time, but as this book is the second in the series, I think it can be forgiven. That said, it stands alone very nicely - I would still like to read its predecessor and I hope for a sequel.
Nice length, nice read.
