Heartless by Natalie Gray
Gaius had some serious issues with his first wife; she called him a jackal and heartless, and perhaps his actions had warranted the name calling, but, really, to send a living curse after him for 2000 years was a little over the top. His curse is never far behind, tormenting him and hurting anyone he gets close to until he meets a modern day thief who believes the man he has become is worth risking it all for. Anne-Marie lives her life by her own set of rules. Pulling herself out of the poverty she was born into, Anne-Marie has perfected her art; there isn’t a place she can’t slip in or out of with silence and ease. Coupling her skills and her love Egyptian antiquities, she has found a comfortable existence even though it was a lonely one. Yet a simple job and 2000 year old curse will change Anne-Marie’s life. Now she must not only unlock the mystery of the antique jar, she also needs to unlock the heart of a man who is literally heartless.
While this was a very short book, it didn’t leave me feeling like something was missing - it delivered on the action and hot steamy moments. Natalie Gray does an excellent job of giving you glimpses of Gaius’s past while keeping the story very much in the moment. I liked the character of Gauis; he was a man that acknowledged his past indiscretions and owned up to his actions as well as the consequences of those actions. Anne-Marie was the perfect thief and very clever “seeing” what tricks Gaius was going to pull and thwarting him at every turn she was a real woman. One thing that I really found interesting was the whole concept of a curse having shape and mass. Can you just imagine a world with living curses? I would hate to leave the house. Overall, “Heartless” was an action-based story filled with hot gratuitous sex and a great little read - just don’t expect loads of romance.
