The Dark Path by Luke Romyn
He is evil personified, or so he believes, because when The Dark Man cometh, everyone makes haste to get out of his way. Spawned from tragedy, The Dark Man has made his way through the New York underground for a decade before being called up for this, his most important job. But why select the epitome of evil for a job requiring self-sacrifice and the ultimate in kindness? Only God knows, and he’s not telling. Charged with stopping the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and saving Sebastian, the Avun-Riah, The Dark Man, also known as Vain, must dig deep within himself to find the effort to care enough to carry out this seemingly impossible mission. In this battle of evil versus evil for the survival of the entire world, you’ll be surprised what you can find within you.
When Martin Roberts became The Dark Man, aka Vain, he never thought there was a chance to go back. After the brutal murders of his wife and daughter, his kind half hid in fear while Vain took over and became the ultimate tool of evil. He became the sort of evil of which even the Devil is afraid. However, when confronted with the task of saving the world, he proves beyond a doubt that no one is ever unsalvageable.
Sebastian is the Avun-Riah, the savior of the world. If he dies, life as we know it will cease to exist as the world is plunged into chaos and darkness. Unfortunately, he is young, inexperienced and all on his own…until he meets Vain. Fortunately for everyone, he is bright and a quick learner. Together with Vain and some unexpected help from the outside, Sebastian just might succeed.
Despite being an extremely dark and twisted story of horrific violence and tragedy, The Dark Path is also a story of hope and redemption. Vain’s struggles within himself and with the outside world affected me greatly. You really do come to like this incarnation of evil and want him to win, for all our sakes. With the addition of Sebastian, Vain’s complete and total opposite, they make a duo of epic proportions. A very profound work of fiction that will make you think. One of the very best horror stories I’ve read in a long time.
