Miyako is stuck in a stupefying life as an office girl in Tokyo. Still living with her parents, she can see no way out. Life in Tokyo is bound by tradition, and the next step is marriage to someone her parents select. Miyako is unsettled by the thought of turning out like her mother and is positive there must be something better and more joyous about life. Then one day an invite to Hotel Butterfly appears. Deciding to accept the invitation changes Miyako’s life in ways she could not have anticipated. But Hotel Butterfly also has a mind of it’s own, and to Miyako’s horror, a gaijin starts living in the hotel. Josh is not what Miyako expected, and her initial rection is disbelief and horror that this could happen in her Hotel Butterfly. Through her interaction with Josh, Miyako must learn to put aside past belief’s and form her own opinions.

Miyako starts out as a prim traditional girl with a yearning to find a better way of life. During her journey, her life changes in dramatic ways that force her to rethink and look at all her beliefs. I’m can’t quite pinpoint the reason but, for me, something seemed stilted or off about Miyako and I just could not warm to her.

Josh initially seems the lovable all-American boy-next-door but he has some deep seated desires that he has trouble expressing. As Josh grows, these desires are revealed and he must learn to accept and live with them rather than fighting against his nature.

I would be interested to hear what others think of this story. For me, something just wasn’t right, and I had difficulty believing in and falling for the characters. I found I had to make myself continue reading. Yet for the most part, the world-building and story worked, but I am finding it very hard to describe what I didn’t like. I think it boils down to the overall concept of a fantasy being there just for one person to manipulate and control. I like to be sucked into a fresh world and grow and learn along with the characters and I just didn’t get that from this.
