Whom Gods Have Favored by Denysé Bridger
Set in the days leading up to the eruption of Vesuvius, Pompeii is a prosperous community, and Lucius is the general of the army. His power is great and so are his appetites. While attending the slave markets, he spies Xina, a young woman full of anger and ire who is sold from the only home she’s known since birth. Intrigued, Lucius buys the woman and brings her into his home. But at home all is not well. His wife’s affections are for another, his son has become a ruthless beast, rarely at home, and his daughter will not have anyone stand between her and her father’s undivided attention. As Lucius teaches Xina passion and how to please him, his daughter’s ire at the insult to her and her mother’s attention flares, and Xina’s life is put at stake.
As Pompeii sits at the cusp of its destruction, Lucius’s son displays exactly what kind of beast he has become turning Xina into a vampire. In her rage, she destroys him then offers her newfound gift to Lucius.
Heartache and pain are the threads which draw the main characters together in this beautiful saga. Denyse does a wonderful job of describing her world and the characters, allowing you to feel as if you know them like a close friend. Though not for younger audiences, this is a story that is sure to enrapture the historical reader as well as those who just love a good happily ever after.
