Guest Blog, Chat and Contest With Author Jill Myles

Posted under Chat, Contests, Guest Bloggers, Site News by Site Hostess on Friday 18 December 2009 at 12:58 pm

Confession: I’m not a very serious person. Very, very unserious. It’s true: I have a terrible poker face, I laugh when those poor kids fall off the trampoline in every single America’s Funniest Home Video, and I don’t think that I could tell a sad story to save my life. I’m afraid that I have…an emo deficiency. And even more cowbell won’t fix this problem.

You see, once upon a time, I thought I’d write a novel. A tight, gripping, Indiana Jones type of story where the swashbuckling heroine would love (and leave) the hero, save the day, and move on to bigger and better things. So I introduced the heroine - a bad, naughty girl. A succubus! Rrowr! She was going to tear up the town…except I forgot one criticial thing. Emo-deficiency. So instead of my heroine kicking ass and taking names, she ends up kissing guys, making a muck of things and turning some very powerful immortals into enemies.

Saving the world? She’ll have to get back to you on that.

That should give you an idea of what the Succubus Diaries are like. Adventure! Swashbuckling! Pissed off immortals! Kissing! (Lots and lots of kissing, but this shouldn’t be a surprise with a succubus story, right?) Jackie Brighton is plenty capable, but she has her own ‘unique’ way of doing things. One thing she’s definitely not good at, though? Picking between the two hot guys in her life (a fallen angel and a vampire).

Which brings me to the discussion here today!

1) The common perception of a succubus is that she’s a ‘bad girl’ because her powers involve sex. Bum rap though it may be, I thought it was a great character type to play around with. Who’s your favorite bad girl? Real or fictional? And why — what about her do you find appealing?

2) I always have to ask this but — vampire or fallen angel? One man is quite deliciously naughty, and the other one is loyal, honest, and courageous. Both are smoking hot. Which one would you pick and why?

3) My books take place in a mythical metropolis in Wyoming (of all places), and it’s named New City. Do you like books that center around a made up city (like Gotham) or do you prefer the reality?

4) My books are light, rompy paranormals that deal with an awkward subject (sex, of course). I’m a big fan of awkward and funny — but I’ve noticed that most paranormals tend to be darker. For every Sookie Stackhouse, there’s ten kick-butt chicks running around. What’s your preference? Playful or dark?

Lots of questions for us today :D
    Hiya Jill, loving that trailer!

I will have a go at that fallen angel vs vamp. it is pretty simple these days cos alas, my love for vampires has simmered down and is pretty non existing, but a fallen angel sounds just about right.

Of course sadly I do have this certain image in my head of those two in briefs, that tattoo, and was there some hairy legs int there too ;)

    Hey there Blodeuedd!

Thank you on the trailer! That will make my husband quite happy (he drew all of it). The most I helped with is “Can you make her hair redder? And her boobs bigger? Like RIDICULOUS bigger?” Poor man.

And if I’m reading your comment correctly, I think you say that you want a fallen-angel-vampire-sandwich? Oh, the plot ideas that one forms… ;)

    Hi Ms. Myles,

This book sounds really interesting and great, can’t wait to read it. How did you come up with the idea for this book? How many succubus diaries will there be?

    2) Angels, because they’re loyal and honest.
    3) I like made up cities and reality.
    4) Playful because i like novels that can make me laugh.

    Jill-

Your book sounds like fun! Can’t wait to read it. Let’s see…I’m supposed to be answering questions.

    1. I can’t answer this one. I’ve tried. Really. I kept typing things and erasing them and ye olde braine refuses to help me out. I love complicated heroines. I don’t see them as “bad girls.” I think we all have depths we could sink to and lines we could cross and it’s interesting to read a character who does that. I love heroines who have issues, flaws, and make me laugh.

    2. I’m going to go with fallen angel. Mostly because I’m sort of vamped out at the moment. But also because I don’t think I would like the smell of blood breath. Just saying.

    3. Who needs reality? I’ll read any setting as long as it’s well written.

    4. I like to have my cake and eat it too. I write funny dark paranormals because I couldn’t decide between the two.

Great interview! I’m looking forward to reading your book. :)

    Hello Jill,

    1) The evil vampiress is my favorite Bad Girl. Mainly she’s old and when she fails, it is an epic failure.

    2) Fallen Angel because of the loyalty

    3) I don’t have a preference to a fantasy city or a real one as long as the story is good.

    4) My books tend to fall in the very dark or very lite, funny don’t really have any that are right in the middle.

Van P - Hi! The idea for the succubus diaries — okay, it’s kind of lame. :) I was having lunch with my sister. She is a big fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon (I am too!) and we were talking vampires, and I mentioned that I wanted to write a book with vampires in it. And we were talking and I think the topic of ‘blood starved’ vampires came up, and I joked that they would probably be ’sex starved’ too. And the phrase ’sex starved’ kind of set off a chain reaction in my brain. Like, what if vampires had to have sex to survive instead of blood? Would they still be vampires? Or would they be more like a succubus? So that’s kind of where it took off. :)

As for how many books in the series - at least three! I’m writing book 3 at the moment. Each book has its own encapsulated storyline that gets resolved with each novel so it feels more like a TV show with episodes (and hopefully less like a big epic fantasy), but there are ongoing threads that I have that tie the books together. I love ongoing characters, but I’m not a huge fan of storylines that go on and on forever, so I do have an end in mind. :)

CJ - Helloooo! ;) In regards to heroines with flaws - yes! I mean, I don’t want her to be tripping over her own feet to try and save the day. She does need to have some measure of competency. But I also dislike it when nothing is hard for the heroine because she is a badass at everything! So I’m hoping I hit a good balance.

As for blood breath, I never thought about it. I mean, I imagine a vampire would be so overwhelmingly sexy and scary that you’d never notice his breath, right? I don’t think I’d turn away, say, Johnny Depp if he smelled like hotdogs.

(Okay, maybe if he smelled like hotdogs. Maaaybe)

Hi Cyd - I love old vampiresses too! Actually, I love any older, very confident heroine that knows how to take care of herself. I think that’s one reason paranormal is so fun — powers and immortality level the playing field a little more for even less skilled heroines.

And you picked Fallen Angel too! My fallen angel is on the cover of book 1 (the vampire is on book 2). I have to admit that while I find both covers utterly gorgeous, #1 is my favorite! Maybe it’s the washboard abs. ;) He’s also got a tattoo on his arm, which I love because it’s a (very minor) story point.

Love guys with tattoos. Does anyone else? For some reason, tattoos scream urban fantasy to me, and I’m not sure why. Is it the edginess?

I Have Not Had The Pleasure Of Reading Your Book But My Favorite Bad Girl Would Be Geargina Kincaid From Richelle Mead’s Succubus Series. I Love Her Because Yes She Is A Demon But She Doesn’t Like WHat She Is. She Tries To Do The Right Things At The Cost Of Her Own Happiness.

    2. Vampire Or Fallen Angel? Which One Would You Pick And Why?
I Would Pick Vampire. I Have Loved Vampires Since I Was A Kid And Now Finally They Are Getting The Attention That They Deserve.

    3. Do You Like Books That Center Around A Made Up City (Like Gotham) Or Do You Prefer The Reality?

CJ — This is true. Though is there a grossness factor that Johnny Depp cannot reach? Like, what if he smelled like stinky, old cheese? Or that smell you get when you haven’t showered and you rub behind your ear?

Not that I know about that, of course.

  12. Comment by C.J. Redwine — December 18, 2009 @ 2:00 pm

Johnny Depp is one of the chosen few exempt from the grossness factor. Robert Downey Jr is another.

If, for some reason, both DJ and RDJ decided to eschew all forms of personal hygiene, I would (reluctantly) take one for the team (who’d better get their hands OFF) and hose them down.

Hi Jill, very funny interview and the video was really good.

    1. I like a gal who kicks ass and takes names but it’s important for me that she have a great sense of humor too.

    2. Ever since I read Hush,Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick I’ve really been into Fallen Angels.

    3. I have to say that I like cities that have been completely created by the authors more. Because it is made up the possibilites are endless.

    4. That’s tough for me because I tend to lean toward books that have some humor in them. However, I do really enjoy some of the darker books as well.

-Do you have a muse or are you naturally creative enough to write without a muse?

CJ - You can have those two. I think I will take a dirty Sam and Dean from Supernatural. And let’s not forget Castiel!

Rebecca - Hi! Thank you! You mentioned HUSH, HUSH. I have not had a chance to read it, but it’s sitting on my nightstand. I totally bought it because of the cover - so beautiful! What did you like best about it?

Speaking of covers - there’s another question to toss out to everyone. My covers have some half-nekkid, sexy men. Love that. But I’m also jealous of Molly Harper’s covers (you entered her contest too, right?) because they look so fun and charming.

So which do you prefer? Saucy girl on the cover or sweaty guy? I’m totally curious. :)

    Hi Jill!
    1) Oh, there are just to many for me to narrow it down, I can’t even begin! I love the bad girl heroin!

    2) I’ve always been partial to my vampires, but I do like fallen angels too. I haven’t read your books yet, but if yours are actually good then they get a few extra points. Fallen angels can be the worst of the worst.

    3) I like both. I don’t really have a preference.

    4) I like a mixture personally. Sometimes I read really dark stuff, but I tend to prefer a bit of snarkiness in the books I read.

Oh, and C.J. you can keep RDJ if he gets super gross, however I might just have to fight you for Johnny Depp no matter the circumstances!

  17. Comment by Jill Myles — December 18, 2009 @ 2:17 pm

    Hi Kayla!

I will tell you, I am really bad with titles! I sort of pick obnoxious ones. Like, Gentlemen Prefer Succubi first started out as SEX STARVED (get it, a succubus? sex starved?) and I thought that was horribly clever of me. Book two? Originally called SEX DRIVE. But everyone I told these titles to got this uncomfortable look on their faces. I guess it was too ‘in your face’ and blatant, because when my editor said “We’re changing the titles” I said “Oh, thank goodness.”

And then she asked me what else I had. And I had the deer in headlights look on my face. It took me about 4 days to come up with a big long list of new titles based off of movies. My personal favorite? LIVE AND LET SUCCUBI (instead of the James Bond “Live and Let Die”). Marketing said no to that one, drat. Can’t blame them. ;)

But we both liked Gentlemen Prefer Succubi and Succubi Like It Hot. Book 3 doesn’t have a title yet, but I do best when I think of books as titles, so I’m calling it ‘My Fair Succubi’ at the moment.

As far as a muse…not really! I do have two pushy cats that keep trying to lay on my keyboard when I type, and several friends that I bounce ideas off of (we call each other ‘Mean Girls’) but no official muse. I could probably use one, though! Maybe I could get a muse for Christmas.

    Hi Jill,

The book sounds really interesting and I like the cover. How much input do you have on the cover design?

    1. I don’t have a favorite but I like kick ass heroines who also have a sense of humor.

    2. I prefer Vamps. They can be loyal and naughty at the same time.

    3. My preference is real cities as long as the city is depicted properly. It’s a real turn-off to be reading a book about a city that you’re familiar with and a lot of the details are wrong.

    4. Definitely books should have some humor. Even if the book is mainly serious and dark you need some humor to make it more readable. Who wants to read books that are depressing all of the time.

    Hi Sandy!

Okay, the cover design. Small confession. I am married to an artist, and it’s made me realize I have the WORST ARTISTIC EYE EVER. Like, I’m the kind of person that thinks lime green and yellow and brown is a great color combination. And you know how some people can make their own web design graphics and throw things together and it looks amaaaaaazing? I am SO not one of those people. So I have no idea what makes a good cover other than what I like (again, questionable taste). I did have a conversation with my editor about the cover, though, and it went something like this.

Her: Do you have any ideas?
Me: Hot girls! And cartoons! And give her big boobs and–
    Her: No.
    Me: No?
Her:I think we’re going to go with a hot guy.
Me: Oooo, can he be all scary and angry and chewing on the heroine’s neck–
Her: No, just a hot guy. I’ll pick something out.
Me: Can we give him a random tattoo?
    Her: We can do that!

Seriously - I am totally art-handicapped, so I did not fight to have anything in particular on the cover. My editor has been in the business for a long time, and she is a genius, so I went with whatever she wanted. And sure enough, my cover is fabulous! So I have her to thank. :)

Amanda - I am a total sucker for angels (that’s why I squealed a million times when Supernatural added Castiel) of any kind, but I am also partial to ghost stories! Really scary ghost stories. I love to have the pants scared off of me in a good horror movie. For paranormals, I’m a big fan of shifters! I love the shifters in Ilona Andrews’s series, and Nalini Singh’s books, and I even have my own shifter series coming out late in 2011. Not for a while yet!

As far as Supernatural, I do think it’s my favorite scripted TV show. My husband laughs, but I am totally addicted to Survivor. It’s the only TV show I never miss.

Her first book in her Guardian series featured the demoness Lilith, and Lilith falls for a fallen angel (uh, no pun intended). Meljean Brook is another favorite of mine. BIG TIME. Vampire Academy was majorly fun too! Oh, and have you read HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins? Katniss was a total badass. Loved her.

LOL! I’m sad to say I haven’t gotten the chance to read your books just yet but it’s on my list. So my question for you, when you wrote this series and it was supposed to be a Indiana Jones type story and it started going amiss, did you try to gear it back to that seriousness or did you start laughing and saying, “oh yeah, that’s totally Jackie”? Do you have an idea of who she’s going to choose yet? Share and spill please~ :)

I like both dark and light paranormal books–they counter each other nicely so when I’m moody I cn pick it up and be all emo in my corner or pick up a light one and LOL until someone looks at me funny.

As for the humor, once it started to appear in the story, I just ran with it! It was a lot of fun. But then after I wrote the story, I was convinced it wouldn’t sell (crazy, right?) because humor is so subjective. What if I’m just obnoxious and not funny? So I tried writing a few books that were very srs bzns and not at all light. And as you can probably guess…they sucked. So I went back to funny.

    3) My books take place in a mythical metropolis in Wyoming (of all places), and it’s named New City. Do you like books that center around a made up city (like Gotham) or do you prefer the reality? i like both really some books i love the idea of a real city but love fictional cities too

Playful or dark? depends on my mood sometimes i like moody and dark sometimes i like light and playful both are awesome to me really

    Hi Beverly,

I love shifters! I actually like snake shifters, though I don’t know how sexy they are. In the right hands, they can be very sexy. I actually had a long-running disagreement (minor disagreement anyhow) with a friend. I said that were-bears could be sexy - she said no way, because all she imagined was Winnie the Pooh!

So I do think it depends on the author and how they treat it. :)

Denise - I don’t know if I always wanted to be a writer. I remember as a kid that I was always writing stories, and I wrote a bajillion fanfiction stories as a teenager. I have spirals full of them in my closet still. It wasn’t until I was 23 or 24 or so that I got really freaking bored because I had just quit Everquest. I watched a movie that ended poorly and thought…I could do better! So I decided to try and write a novel and see how it turned out. And I liked writing so much that I stuck with it, and the rest is history. :)

    Hello!
    1. I have one other series about succubi, and its the Georgina Kinkaid series by Richelle Mead. I enjoyed those books. (she is a bad girl right? right?) Well maybe the power attracts me. The Epitome of woman’s power. How we can get anything we want, any way we want, we can be sly or innocent…
    2. Vampire or fallen angel? Can’t I have both? I like playful/naughty and innocent/loyal. Vampires fangs, or angel’s wings? Hmm….I can’t choose.
    3. I don’t mind made up cities, though if author’s used real places, I might be interested to go there, and see them and try to connect the places to the story, and just compare what I imagined was how it looked like in real life.
    4. I prefer playful and serious. I know, know I seem to prefer two things at once. But the story can’t be humor all the time, then it just gets boring or it doesn’t go with the scene. Same for series. Moderate books…yeah.
    Thanks.

    1. My favorite bad girl… Kate Daniels of course, I just can’t get enough of that ass-kicker :D
    2. I think I go fallen angel, it might be fun to get him in a little trouble now and then :::wicked grin:::
    3. I don’t mind where a book takes place, as long as the author does a good job of helping me “see” it.
    4. I like a good blend of playful and dark, I don’t discriminate

The common perception of a succubus is that she’s a ‘bad girl’ because her powers involve sex. Bum rap though it may be, I thought it was a great character type to play around with. Who’s your favorite bad girl? Real or fictional? And why — what about her do you find appealing?

Hmmm…I have 2 picks - Angelina Jolie as Lara Craft and Mrs. Smith, and Kate Beckinsdale as Selene in Underworld. All of them are more than capable of taking care of themselves. I find their independence and confidence very sexy and appealing.

    2) I always have to ask this but — vampire or fallen angel? One man is quite deliciously naughty, and the other one is loyal, honest, and courageous. Both are smoking hot. Which one would you pick and why?

I just love the vamp. That whole getting bitten is just sexy. Lots of different places to bite….:)

    3) My books take place in a mythical metropolis in Wyoming (of all places), and it’s named New City. Do you like books that center around a made up city (like Gotham) or do you prefer the reality?

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter. A lot of the times I read books that happen in real cities that I’ve never been to, so they might as well be made since I wouldn’t know the difference. :)

I definitely don’t want serious all the time. I enjoy the butt-kicking 100%, but I want my herione to have some fun as well…not completely all business. So, my preference is both. LOL Variety makes life too interesting.

Hi Aori! I definitely think Georgina Kincaid counts as a ‘bad girl’ if mine does! I think they are both not evil, but they’re certainly not hosting bake sales at the local church, either! And playful AND serious makes sense - it can’t be all banana peels and screaming clowns 24/7 or we’d want to shoot someone. ;) There has to be some downtime amidst the levity - I totally get that!

MinnChica - who could forget Kate Daniels? (Answer, no one, because she’d come and kick your ass so often that you would remember it forever). As for the snuggie, I have an update! My husband confessed to me that he got me a SLANKET and it is sitting under the tree. So it’s not the Snuggie, it’s…better? Do you have the Snuggie or the Slanket? ;)

Heather - Angelina Jolie is a great pick as a bad girl. Did you see her in WANTED? She was excellent as an assassin!

And yes, getting bitten just about anywhere IS sexy. Well, except for maybe on your nose. I can’t think that ever turns out sexily. And well, it has to be a vampire biting. If it’s just some random dude taking a bite out of you…the sexiness loses something. ;)

Hello Jill, have not heard of your debut work as yet and shame on me for that. Thank you for being here and am also a person who has a screwy sense of the way should act when things are not funny, like you laugh when should be serious and also prefer chaos to saving the world in my heroines….

    #2 My answers are :
    1) The best Bad Girl I can think of that have been a fan of for a long long time is LKH’s Anita Blake just because she the mighty Vampire Hunter has fallen and fallen hard for JC the vamp master of the city and it cracks me up and of course have fallen in love with the half harpy half fallen angel love interest and bad girl in The Darkest Whisper, Gwen Skyhawk because she starts out calling herself (do not laugh) Gwendolyn The Timid- so not timid after all but turns out can kick ass with the best of them…..

    2) Fallen Angel because of the loyalty (Refer back to the movie with Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage, the Fallen Angel becomes human and much better than being immortal when I get old and withered after all)

    3) No real preference to a fantasy city or real one as long as the story is good. (Fantasy city does allow more left to the imagination of the author and thus the reader of course)

    4) My books tend to go both ways depending on my reading mood that day. Playful when am in a sunny mood and dark when the weather is gloomy and overcast….

Jackie - Gena Showalter is a fabulous author! She’s so creative. I love the harpy heroine concept - I haven’t read that book yet but I totally need to, don’t I? How fun!

Sue - You just started reading the genre? Wow! Congrats - it’s my favorite genre. ;) (But naturally I am biased, heh). If you are looking for authors to read, I recommend: Meljean Brook (hot angel-types mixed with vampires), Kresley Cole (valkyries), Ilona Andrews (urban fantasy with a kick-butt heroine and a shifter hero) and Nalini Singh (Shifters). All favorites!

MinnChica - We should have an internet contest. A “Show Us Your Snuggie!” sort of contest. I bet they are more popular than people care to let on. ;)

    Hi Aori! That’s ok. :)

I do read non-fiction, but a weird mix. I love books on cryptozoology, history, mythology, and I really enjoy autobiographical writing books — kind of like King’s On Writing — where the author talks about their experiences in the industry.

I’ve been to Canada (Quebec and Toronto mostly) many times, and the farthest I’ve ever traveled is Norway. I went there shortly after the Lillehammer Olympics way back in 1996 or so? Lovely country, but very cold!

    1) Bad girls - Both Buffy & Faith from BtVS come to mind. In fiction, I’ve been reading a lot of YA lately & Isabelle Lightwood from Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments books is a pretty lovely ‘bad’ girl.

    2) Definitely the fallen angel. I like the loyal/devoted/courageous thing. Plus, I’m kind of squeamish about having blood drawn, so the vampire-sucking-on-your-neck thing isn’t overwhelmingly sensual to me.

    3) I like mythical (but realistic) cities best. That way I have no preconceived notions about the setting & can completely immerse myself in the author’s world.

    4) Playful. I love to laugh. So combining humor + paranormal romance = awesome! :)

Great book trailer & I enjoyed the first chapter of Gentlemen Prefer Succubi. I RSVP’ed yesterday & my questions are:

Do you create or listen to playlists while you write? If so, are there any particular songs you associate with the characters in the Succubus Diaries?

You mentioned that you used to write fanfiction, was there a particular book/movie/show/game that inspired you to jump into the world of fanfiction?

Along those same lines, if you could borrow a character from another author’s world to create a crossover book, who would it be? Would we get to see Jackie seduce Mr. Darcy with her succubus charms?

    Jill ,

    1. Bad girls- A Succubus yeah she has a bad rep for seducing and sleeping with alot of people but she can be whoever she wants and she can do her make up , hair and change clothes without lifting a finger if she wants.

    2. Fallen Angel sure he’s loyal/devoted/courageous/sexy but they also are mysterious and everyone loves alittle mystery

3.I like both . Its neat to see where a book can take us but its also interesting when authors take the cities they live in and make them come to life. It give you the feeling like you would want to go there someday to check the place out.

4.While funny are always good I really enjoy the dark ones. They are more mysterious.

Violet - Faith is arguably the best character to come out of Buffy, so no arguments here!

    And great questions!! Let’s see…

Playlists - Not really. I can’t listen to music or I end up typing in the lyrics when I write (it’s kind of sad — I’m too easily distracted). :) But I will say that certain songs/CDs do inspire my mind to write. The very first book I ever wrote, I wrote to the Last of the Mohicans Soundtrack, so it holds a dear spot in my heart. I have a YA that my agent is shopping and I wrote that one entirely to a Dixie Chicks CD. The succubus books don’t have a specific song, though I’m currently loving Lady Gaga, and her video for Bad Romance did inspire me through the last scene of Book 3 (that I’m currently writing).

Fanfiction - Oh boy. :) The earliest thing I remember writing was my own Pern story, back when I’d never even heard of fanfiction (I think I was 12 and this was pre-internet). I even illustrated it. After that, I dabbled in myriad other fanfiction types, but I fell hardcore in love with Elfquest when I was in high school, and wrote my own stories for that.

If I could borrow a character? I’d steal one of Meljean Brook’s Guardians. Preferably Michael. And let the two of them make sweet, sweet love together. Mmm, Guardians.

I love the vamps, I am still a bit unsure about Fallen Angels, something about all that perfection is intimidating. How could mortals be good enough for perfection?

Do you like books that center around a made up city (like Gotham) or do you prefer the reality? I like use of the imagination even when it comes to a setting. Make the author work for it! By using a real place/setting, the reader doesn’t have to use their imagination very much in order “see it” in their mind!

4)Hmmm, I’d have to say it really depends on my mood. However, too much darkness can be rather depressing so I find that a well placed humor, without going overboard, works best for me!

    2) I appreciate loyalty and honesty and a guy who doesn’t see me as food, so a fallen angel it is.

    3) Most locations are kind of imaginary for me anyway since I’ve never visited them. So it doesn’t matter if an author makes up a city or two.

    4) A mix of light and dark: I like butt-kicking that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Not that actual butt-kicking is a requisite, but a paranormal story is bound to have some excitement. (Or I hope so!)

guuuurl, I’m so getting ur book when I see it! lol
I loved the little promo trailer & the premise, so count me in.

    1) I love fictional bad girl ‘Blair Waldorf’ as played by Leighton Meester on Gossip Girl! I love her sense of style, and her tenacious attitude, all the while looking like a lady when she takes down an enemy that f-ed with the wrong gal!She and Chuck Bass (played by Ed Westwick) are so great on that show. I’m a total fan :)

    2) I’d pick the deliciously naughty one (vampire) because they seem to be more passionate about everything.

    3) I generally prefer reality because I like recognizing details that I take for granted, especially when the author writes about them in a way that makes it hilarious. Like when I’m reading about Sookie driving to Shreveport and Charlaine makes witty observations about the most random crap that we’ve all been through (well, everyone that’s driven through LA), it amuses me.

    4) It’s a tough question because it’s all so subjective. I might find Sookie book hysterical while a friend thinks it dark. But I usually love the playful stuff the best. And if it’s got some romance, then I usually really like it. I’m a sucker for a good love (or even lust, lol) story. I like dark too, because I often read dystopic stories so it all kinda depends if it’s just a good story concept.

Also, I’d just written a book previously (that is still sitting in my closet, heh) that was set in downtown Dallas and mapping out streets and transportation was such a pain! 1. favorite bad girl would probably be Cat Woman. She hot, playful, the one woman batman has stuck around the longest with, wicked attitude, great outfits, misunderstood.
2.fallen angels are alright (especially the way some writers have been portraying them - Cynthia Smith in Eternal), but my pick will always be vampires. Minus the blood (and now you can get synthetic), the thought of loving and living for eternity with a hottie who will never change appeals to me.
    3. I like the setting to be in the real world (Laurell Hamilton has made St Louis the place to be for immortals) and a mix (Borderlands) for fantasy
4.I like both kinds (Sookie - light; Anita Blake - dark)

Can’t wait to see what you’ve done with a succubus (interesting how she became one). So, do you think it could work if a heroine was a vamp/shapeshifter mix who starts off hunting the creatures that attacked her preganant mother, making her into what she is, and finally accepts who/what she is (master of city and leader of shapeshifter clan both want her)by the end? Just a little idea I’m working with and trying to get some feedback.

I can’t think of a favorite bad girl, but I always enjoy them. Just like the bad boy, as long as they have some redeeming qualities, they’re always fun.
Vampire or fallen angel? I’ll take the vampire - dark, brooding, bad guys are more appealing to me.
I love the mythical city, because you can make it any way you want it, you don’t have to stick to reality. That’s more fun and can take the story in unexpected directions.
Playful or dark? I like dark and brooding, but playful, light paranormals are really fun.
I’m looking forward to checking out Succubus Diaries, sounds like a series I’ll really enjoy.

More cowbell! A succubus, fallen angel and a vampire. There’s definitely a story in that group. :)

1)Faith from Buffy and Catwoman. Kick a**, hot, street smarts, leather and vinyl.
2)Vampire, usually, unless you count Nicolas Cage in City of Angels. Then both. Wings are awesome.
3)As long as I get a good visual feel, either.
4)Darkly playful. A vampire falling into a bathtub is needed in a dark mystery. :) I love the mix.
Commented at Molly’s. You guys both worked us with the questions and made us laugh, yay. RSVPd for this.

Can’t see the trailer on my cell. Jill, I am a compulsive smiley-face-maker, too. :) I like the art of tattoos but wouldn’t want anything permanent. I just watched Johnny Depp as Sweeney and like Robert. I like both saucy girls with boots on the cover and guys. The LKH covers before they went to scissors and saws are some of my favorites (and Kim Harrison’s). I love your “art talk”. SRSLY Binder Clips! That Chick Pron was awesome! (Thanks Meljean!) Angelina makes a wonderful bad girl character (gonna watch Wanted eventually). Or your random friend licking your arm, sometimes that’s sexy. Vampire bites for the win. I’m making my own Snuggie in Hello Kitty design.

Alice-LKH much? :) Kind of a neat idea though, with that twist. :)

Today was definitely a fun chat day. Thanks again!

    I RSVP’ed.

I have to say that I’m fond of Succubus characters (I really enjoy the Georgina Kincaid series).

As for bad girls, there’s always Buffy, of course. And for some reasons, Angelina Jolie pops to my mind. She’s done the bad girl thing in real time and well as in films!

Your series’ on my radar, I’m just waiting for the TBR pile to slim down a bit before I go on a new shopping spree. Good luck with your release!

    1. Witches who are not just white but slip into darker magic

    2. Love them both but I have to go with the fallen angel - I think he would be a better long term partner

    3. I like a well made up city. Real ones are fine as well if there are not major errors.

    4. Depends on my mood! I like both funny and dark books I just have to read them according to my mood that day.

    I RSVPED

Hi Libby! If I had a time machine, I’d check out Ancient Egypt. I’m a hardcore Egyptophile, so I’d definitely want to check out the 18th Dynasty and see who really was King Tut’s dad. And maybe go further back and see who built the pyramids after all. ;)

Three people to dinner — Queen Hatshepsut (the first successful female pharaoh), Eleanor of Aquitaine, and…hm. How about Edward III? I have a question about a plot idea that won’t go away and I can’t find the answer via research. ;)

    Hi Alice!

You asked: Can’t wait to see what you’ve done with a succubus (interesting how she became one).

Well, I do think a vamp/shifter mix can work (Keri Arthur has one), but if she goes around killing everyone, wouldn’t they be angry if she was their leader? :)

Aori — Cryptozoology is the study of cryptids (loch ness, bigfoot, etc). And neither Canada or Norway has figured in to my books…yet. I’m not ruling it out though!

Vampire or Fallen Angel? I have to say fallen angel since I just read Hush, Hush and Patch is a badboy hottie.

    1) I can’t anyone that I’d like; being a good girl myself, I’m more a good girl fan:)
    2) Fallen angel, definitely - much more mysterious and tragic.
    3) I’d prefer a made-up city, or anything as distant from the boring reality as possible.
    4) I like both, for different reasons. A combination of these two is even better.

    RSVPed for this

Oh wow. Does your heroine study that subject?
And do they have classes for studying cryptozoology?

    1) Who’s your favorite bad girl? Real or fictional? And why — what about her do you find appealing?

I think Kate Daniels is probably my favorite bad girl these days, in part because she’s so hard-core. She doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone. :)

    2) I always have to ask this but — vampire or fallen angel? One man is quite deliciously naughty, and the other one is loyal, honest, and courageous.

Wait, which one’s which? :) I think the back story of the fallen angel has to be more tormented — because the question becomes *why* he fell, and what he’s done since then. I’m definitely intrigued by the backstory!

    3) Do you like books that center around a made up city (like Gotham) or do you prefer the reality?

I like books that center around a real city *if* they really feel like the real city. If it’s someplace I’m familiar with and doesn’t feel like that place, I’d rather it be a made up place. :)

    4) I’m a big fan of awkward and funny — but I’ve noticed that most paranormals tend to be darker. … What’s your preference? Playful or dark?

I like awkward and funny, but I also like dark — it depends on the story. I love the lighthearted and snarky fun of Anton Strout’s and Mark Henry’s novels (and I especially love how awkward sex is in Mark Henry’s books!), but I also love serious dark stories like Devon Monk’s Allie Beckstrom series, or Caitlin Kittridge’s Black London series. Balancing the two types of series keeps both of them fresh!

Jill, I’ve been following your lj for awhile, and I’m really looking forward to reading your novels! What is the scariest part of your upcoming novel release? What part are you most looking forward to?

    (I RSVP’ed!)

    Hi guys!

Aori - The heroine’s job in this one is a docent (and later an archaeologist). I do have a Young Adult novel that I’m currently shopping that deals more with cryptozoology — hopefully it will sell!

Amber - Hi! I’m such a bad facebooker. :) I keep promising to post more often and then I forget!

Alana - I recognized your name! :) The scariest part of the upcoming release is that so much is out of your hands. I could promote all day long on my blog or on other websites but at the end of the day, I’m still only reaching a small portion of readers. The thing I’m looking forward to most? Seeing reader reactions, I think. I’m crossing my fingers for some good reactions, but I’m looking forward to the bad ones too so I can learn from them. :)
