Guest Blog, Chat and Contest With Author Molly Harper

Posted under Chat, Contests, Guest Bloggers, Site News by Site Hostess on Friday 18 December 2009 at 12:59 pm

People often ask if I’ve had paranormal experiences- if my lifelong obsession with all things that go bump in the night is rooted in some traumatic episode.

Plenty about my life has been weird, but that’s generally due to the people I’m related to. I’ve seen things I can’t scientifically explain. Facing a shadowy, indistinct shape that seemed to be staring down at me from an upstairs landing at a college friend’s rental house stands out as an incident that prompted my “get the hell out” response. Though, thinking back, it’s possible that was just my friend’s creepy upstairs neighbor.

I have had what my husband, David, calls “weirdo psychic flashes” of intuition, but sadly, they have never been related to lotto numbers.

Antique shops make me dizzy and nauseous. But that’s probably because I just really, really hate antiquing- not because of some psychic sensitivity.

I think that everyone has gone through some bone-chilling, goose-bumping incident that they can’t explain later. Even if they try to write it off with some logical explanation, there’s a tiny nagging suspicion in a corner of their brain that tells them that there is no logical explanation.

That nagging little suspicion is what fascinates me about the paranormal; because when you accept that, all things become possible. And when all things are possible, you get a heck of a story.

I don’t necessarily want to see a ghost. I just want to hear the sad tale of why they’re sticking around. I don’t want psychic powers, but I’d love hear about the wacky hijinks a psychic can get into during the course of an average day. I don’t really like to think about my vampire character, Jane, biting people, but the idea of Jane trolling the aisles of Wal-Mart for blood substitute cracks me up.

So I guess the answer is that my experiences haven’t been paranormal… but I’m probably a little abnormal.

Questions for readers:

1) Tell me about your creepiest, most logic-defying personal experience.
2) What area of paranormal fiction do you prefer (vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, aliens) and why?
3) What do you think the next “big thing” in paranormal fiction will be?

Hi Mrs. Harper, Love your Jane Jameson series :)

    1. About a year ago i was sitting in my room, when suddenly i felt the cold wind in my face. The thing is that there is two windows in that room, but both were closed and lock. I got creep out, so i went to sleep with my sister.
    2. Vampires and Shifters because they’re more fun to read about, ghost kinda gives me the chills whenever i read about them.
    3. Zombies!

My question is: Will there be more than three books to the series? Also which authors are on your must buy list?

    - I rsvped

Wow, Molly, you are making us work. :)

1.) Many years ago, as a teenager, I was visiting at my step-brother’s (very small)house (more of a beach cottage), at a time when I was alone, I saw a figure walk down the hall — but there was no door or any other exit there. Creepy, indeed.

2.) I have been partial to vampires for a long time, but also enjoy reading about witches and shifters.

3.)I’m not sure about the “next big thing,” but perhaps books where several paranormal species are co-existing and interacting. As long as those of you who write the stuff keep telling great stories, I’ll be happy. :)

    Hello Molly,
I am eagerly waiting for Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever. Ok I fan girled out and have my fingers crossed that my Indy will get it early.

My creepiest logic defying personal experience was in a hotel room a human shadow shape it stayed in one place didn’t move, wasn’t their the night before or the following nights.

I’m a huge witch, ghost, vampire fan namely because of Linda Wisdom’s Hex series.

The next big thing in paranormal fiction would be steakpunk with aliens fighting zombies.

On the first question, nada, I truly have nothing to tell. Once I felt a brush of wind, like that is all :(

I am into shifters these days, well weres cos I have soft spot for those rough men at the moment. But these things shift like the wind

Oh no idea! You guys are really covering everything at the moment

    Hello Molly,
    1. I have always felt like I have a presense around keeping my love ones and myself safe.

2.Vampires and I am getting into Fallen Angels. I have always loved movies with both but I find reading about vampires give such a thrill and fallen angels are just mysterious in their own nature.

    3. Fallen Angels since Legion will be coming out soon. Or something with a mixture because we have had tons with zomies , werewolves, and vampires so I dont think they are quite finished yet.

I havent had a chance to read your books yet but i have addded them to my TBR list .
My question for you though is :How do your stories differ from the others ones out there. And how did you come up with the main characters in your stories?

Hi Molly! I have indeed RSVPed.
First of all, to be completely unoriginal, I absolutely adore your books!
(And yes, I did pre-write this entire thing way before the chat started)

    1) I’ve never really had one. I think I actually tried to self- inflict an expirience like that. The closest thing was hearing noises from the hallway.
2)I prefer vampires, though all paranormals are good with me! Something about the elegance of a vampire, their dark humor, really gets me.
3)I think the whole Twilight frenzy, involving werewolves, is bringing us a whole lotta shape-shifting. Zombies are attracting attention as well.

Now, I have a question (obviously):
There are many myths about vampires out there. People that create their own “vampire world” must decide which ones they will enforce. How did you decide? For example, in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ (Oh, that’s your favorite TV show? I had no idea), vampires shy away from crosses, while in your books, they do not.

    Thanks!
    Gali

Hi Mrs. Harper. I really enjoyed reading your interview.

    1. I’ve had quite a few unexplainable incidents happen to me but the one that scared the bejesus out me was when I had to take my daughters dog out to potty one night. We live in the country or sticks as it is so often refereed to and the dog and I were in the back yard when all of a sudden this light came out of nowhere. It was over the treetops of my neighbor home and it just kind of hovered there for a moment and then shot straight up into the sky and disappeared. Every hair on my body rose and my heart was beating double time. For a second I thought maybe I had imagined it or mistaken it but I noticed that the dog was looking up toward the sky as well. I knew without a doubt that it couldn’t have been a plane because it was to close to the house. I don’t think I’ve moved that fast in years but I hightailed it to the house. I’ve never taken the dog out that late again. Ever. Just one of those experiences that I could never find a reasonable explanation.

    2. I read them all but my favorite would have to be fae.
    3. Angels, fallen angels, and demons.

My question: Have you ever had your fortune read or a physic reading?

Hope you have a Merry Christmas!

1)I have dreams that come true a lot. I mean completely come true. Word for word, action for action. Well, sometimes I change what I’m supposed to say and throw it off just for fun…
There was also this time… one night that I was laying in bed thinking about my boyfriend and the last time we had spent some time together. He called me the next day telling me of a ghost experience that was freakily (I don’t think that’s a word) close to what I had thought about the night before. I hadn’t mentioned a thing to him. Talk about weird. And it had happened at about the same time in the middle of the night.

    2) My favorite has always been vampires. Lately I’ve really enjoyed shifters, and I’ve always liked witches as well. Fallen angels are nice for a change every now and then as well.

3)Steampunk. It’s what I keep hearing about, and more and more authors are mentioning possible steampunk projects in the future so we haven’t seen the end of it.

What’s your favorite Stephen King novel?

    Hi Molly!!!
1 - One of the strange things is that our pups will just randomly start barking at a spot, and then all of sudden they walk over their with their tails waggin’. They sit there just kind of looking at nothing. I always wonder if that is a case of someone stopping by for a visit. They say that animals are more sensitive to the paranormal, so I like to think its family and friends that have passed stopping in to check-up on us.

2 - I love a little bit of everything. I’m an equal opportunity paranormal kind of girl. However, vamps are probably my favorite. From books to the Underworld movies, they seem to rate first with weres and witches close behind.

3 - I wish I knew. Kind of like wanting to know the lottery numbers….:) I also wish I could have that psychic moment. I’ve seen a lot more movies about zombies, and there is suppose to be a movie based on Sense, Sensibility, and Zombies…so I’ll guess zombies. I hope its more of the fun kind, and less of the gross evil ones.

I have to say that the anything goes aspect of the paranormal is what fascinates me the most. If a writer can make the world realistic enough, why can’t we have a whole crazy race of moose-people or something. :)

Hi Molly, you have great covers, lol. They’re so fun!

    1) My creepiest, most logic-defying personal experience is all in my head. I have a ridiculously active imagination that likes to run amuck the minute I become aware of a dark situation. I’ve stood waiting at a bus stop in the dark before and was perfectly fine, but a day after, waiting at the same stop, I was talking with a friend and they pointed out the dark and slightly dangerous opportunites and my imagination started to come up with all ideas, especially ones involving that creepy The Ring girl… ugh
    2) I really like Vampire and Shifter paranormal books–I think it’s something to do with the guys being so self assured and in charge of themselves and what they would go through to get their girl. It’s a dream
    3) The next big thing will be psychics, just watch! :)

My questions: Why did you decide to write about vampires rather than something else? And how in the world did you come up with your titles? LOL! They’re great ;D

    1) Tell me about your creepiest, most logic-defying personal experience. Well the logic defying creepy personal experience I had was drinking water along with a spider which I did not see at all. :shudders: There was a little moving clump in my mouth. How the hell did I not see it? That was logic defying…
    2) What area of paranormal fiction do you prefer (vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, aliens) and why? Vampires. Every book I read has to have them in there. Mostly because they have lived long, and have seen much. They are highly intelligent (most of the times) Well Jane didn’t live long, she is still smart…well every rule has to have an exception.
    3) What do you think the next “big thing” in paranormal fiction will be? Angels? Or are they already the big thing? ….then maybe goblins or shadows of people…or maybe chocolate monsters!

Is Jane going to live in three books or are we going to see her star in more books?

    1. I am a psychic and a Witch, so I have plenty of paranormal experiences :-) I think my freakiest was when I was doing a tarot reading for a client and her dead sister started talking through me. Helpful for her…but kinda creepy for me.

    2. I like lots of paranormal types, although I have always been partial to vamps. And witches, obviously :-)

    3. I’m hoping the next big trend is witches, since that’s what I write! (No zombies, thank you very much.)

Molly love the books, sorry for the horrible and rushed review of the third book.

    (1) I plead the fifth
    (2) Vampires, ever since I saw Bela Lugosi in 1931 Dracula been hooked.
    (3) History has shown about every 20 years vampires become popular. None of the other classic Universal movie monsters have hit it as big. Zombies are seeing a nice revival, but commercially speaking nowhere near the revenue stream vampires are right now. I will say vampires will lose some of it’s current steam then 20 years down the road be back for more.

Good luck with the third book Molly!

Sandy G- There are three books contracted so far, but who knows what could happen? :)

And I wanted Jane to be sort of rudderless when she was still human. She loses her aunt, who was her guiding, stabilizing force. And her job, which was what gave her life meaning. When she wakes up as a vampire, she freaks out, but Aunt Jettie is the one who helps her understand the transition. Because only aunt Jettie could make her understand. It felt like I was giving Jane something back after being so mean to her.

Kayla- I’ve always been a storyteller. My mom would listen to me play and there was always a running narrative. But I never considered it for a career until high school, when my freshman English teacher told me my writing voice sounded like Erma Bombeck. And I actually suck at titles. My original title for the book SINGLE UNDEAD FEMALE, which sounded too much like other series. The publisher asked for a list of alternatives and NICE GIRLS came from the title of Jane’s mothers birds and bees lecture. “Nice Girls Don’t Do That. Ever.”

    1) I worked in a hospital & had to clean offices areas(said to be haunted). I would hear someone calling my name & I would answer thinking it was my boss~no one there. And the daycare across from(was old school)at around midnight I was in the basement area & one side of my arm when freezing cold and all the hairs stood up on my arm. That one scared me!
    2) Ghosts~I guess cause I really believe in them. But; I really do like all the others especially vampires.
    3)Zombies
I am always looking for new books and authors.

I RSVP’d and dropped in on Jill’s chat and commented today.
Molly it is good that you came out to join us at BBB, taking time out this close to Christmas was very nice of you and thanks for the image of a Vampire trolling WalMart aisles for Blood Substitute needed that laugh today….
You state that only 3 books are contracted so far, what series do you have planned next if any if you can tell us?

Here are my answers for Questions for readers:

    1) Tell me about your creepiest, most logic-defying personal experience.
The day I rolled and totaled a 1/2 ton pickup in a ditch and walked away with only scratches and bad nightmares…. ( I have a wonderful Guardian Angel who let me live to read more books and other stuff)
    2) What area of paranormal fiction do you prefer (vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, aliens) and why?
I prefer Shapeshifters because they are humans with dual sides to themselves usually and love the idea of being able to phase into a large cat or wolf as a defense mechanism or just to have the sheer joy of running wild….
    3) What do you think the next “big thing” in paranormal fiction will be?
Not sure what will be “big” but would like to see more of the books featuring the harpies and succubi, they are some really seriously bad ass females….

    Molly,
I met you at your Chesterfield Missouri book signing for Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men. (I was the first in line!! :-) ) You said you thought I would love the series, I was also buying for my cousin in Dallas…we both LOVE the books! I can’t wait for the next one! I hope you will continue the series. We love Jane! Keep up the fantastic work!! I have already ordered the next book for the both of us!!

    1. I “see” people at night. My roommate has walked into my room on more than one occasion and found me sitting in by bed talking to someone…actually having a conversation. Mornings after I have asked her about the people having a party and if she was bothered by the noise, and she has informed me there was no party, and that I had been talking to someone in my sleep…..
    2. I like vampires, shapeshifters and witches
    3. hopefully more shapeshifter stuff

    Thanks for the great writing!!

    Molly,
Great interview. I bought your first 2 books and gave them to my best friend for Christmas. She is a librarian. I know she will love them.

    1. When I was in high school a friend of mine was killed in a car accident. That night before I knew he was in an accident, someone touched me on the neck and I heard “Goodbye, Deana”. I found out the next morning about the deadly wreck.
My grandmother was a medium, maybe I get a little of that from her.
    2. I love vampires. I don’t know why. It is all a I read, pretty much. I’m not really into the blood and gore, though.
    3. I really have no idea.

    Thanks,

    Hey Molly,
I want to say how much I love your books. They are on my top ten favorites list.

The most logic-defying personal experience I have had was when I was 6 years old. I had a dream that my best friend was dead. He was talking to me and telling me he had drowned. it scared the crap out of me and I woke up crying. My mom asked what was wrong and after telling her she freaked and called my friends mom. The mom came over in the middle of the night and kept asking me what he said. Turns out my friend had drowned the day before and they just had not told me yet because they thought I was too young to handle it. To this day i wonder if maybe I heard the adults talking about it and didn’t or something and my mind just made it into a dream or if Christopher really came to me. It still gives me the chills.

I prefer vampire fiction, I the reason i really started reading them is because I have a allergy to the sun and it was kind of fun to relate to fictional characters that were just as odd as myself.

I think the next big thing in paranormal fiction will be demons. Don’t know why I think that but it’s just a guess.

    I rsvp’d for the event

Hi Molly! I love Jane, she is such a fun and strong character. :)I also liked her boss in the occult bookstore.
    1. The weirdest unexplainable experience for me is I feel like a man (apparition) always dressed the same, black long sleeve shirt and pants with dark hair is hanging in the doorway to my bedroom at night (not every night) when I am in there by myself and my husband is in another room. If I look directly at him, he goes away. I have chalked it up to staying up too late reading books, but he always looks the same and I may have seen him half a dozen times or more.
    2. My favorite is vampires because I love the danger that surrounds their ability to change humans. I also think about what it would be like to be immortal and have abilities that mere humans do not. Especially if some abilities are rare (such as flying).
    3. I think the next big thing in the paranormal world will be aliens. I think more and more people wonder if they are out there and what would Earth be like with the knowledge of existence. I can see fiction and the entertainment industry latching on to this to make aliens the next “vampire” craze.

Why, thank you Jackie, I would LOVE to plug my next books! :)

I have a non-paranormal romance called AND ONE LAST THING, coming out in August 2010 from Pocket Star. It’s about a woman, Lacey, who finds out her husband is cheating on her. She sends out an e-mail to his friends, family and clients describing his infidelity in humiliating technicolor detail. She’s exiled to a little cabin in the middle of nowhere, stuck living next door to a grumpy crime writer with an unfortunate buttock related nickname. Random nudity and romantic hijinks ensue.

Pocket Star also just bought my latest. It’s a series of books about a woman who moves from Mississippi to Alaska to get away from her intrusive hippie parents, but manages to stumble into a werewolf family drama. Release dates and titles have yet to be determined.

    Hi Molly! I RSVP’d!
I will poat contest stuff later — I wanted to go ahead & post this. :)

Congrats on the book release!!! :)
I have a question for you - if you could have any writers from history over for dinner - who would you have? If you could “live” in a book for a day - which would you live in?

    1) I was on a historcal tour with my mom in Charleston. I was at this one house tour & there was a big dining hall/ballroom/party room. The lady who lived there had a lot of parties there and was a big socializer.( her husband was in Politics, I think) Anyways! I entered the room & stopped dead in my tracks. I had the weirdest vibe that I was NOT welcome. My mom asked me what was wrong and I kept telling her we had to leave. I kind-of tried to describe the feeling & she believed me. I didn’t tell her until years later how intense the feeling was, though. Someone was telling me to get OUT & wasn’t happy. What made it weirder was there was a floor-to-ceiling length painting of the lazy of the house. It sent chills up my spine to see it. Ok, after that & any trip to Charleston (but Not that house) ever since has been great and I’ve never experienced such an ANGRY vibe out of nowhere. Years later, I was watching this “Top Hauntef Places in Charleston” years later. I figured it’d be interesting. Imagine my surprise when #1 was that house. & especially that room! People that work there won’t be there at night because supposedly sounds of parties, music & laughter continue into the night from that room - & they showed that painting again! Ok, that was longer than expected.

    2) LOVE vampire stories! & ghost stories. But vamps are número UNO on my list!

    3)  oh gosh, I don’t know. I just hope good fantasy continues to come out. I love that it is popular right now - hope it stays rhat way!

When I was about 12, my grandma passed and for the next year at least, every time we were in the family room and her name would come up, the lights would flicker like she wanted us to know she was listening!

    2) What area of paranormal fiction do you prefer (vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, aliens) and why? I prefer vampires because I find them to be quite sensual and a dangerous way! You know us girls! We like us some danger once in a while! =)

    1. Tell me about your creepiest, most logic-defying personal experience.

I once had a dream where my grandmother, who had died recently, called me and told me I’d be waking up soon and to be a good girl for my mom and not to worry because she was with my grandfather now. Freaked me the heck out; I was like 12.

    2. What area of paranormal fiction do you prefer (vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, aliens) and why?

Um. I’d have to say that I really like alternating between vamps (where there’s lots of description of blood), weres (where there’s a lot of smells being described) and SOMETHING ELSE where blood is just red and Not Good and where most smells aren’t noticeable.

    3. What do you think the next “big thing” in paranormal fiction will be?

I’d have to say something like Sherrilyn Kenyon and Angela Knight is doing where mythologies are being given new spins. Would LOVE to see Norse myth get a chance to shine like that.

    (1) I already own all of Molly’s books save for DEAD DON’T LIVE FOREVER because it hasn’t been released yet.

    Hi Molly! Great post!

I love reading about vamps and shifters. Ghosts rank too high on the spook factor for me. I guess I believe ghosts exist on some level, vamps and shifters are more fantasy. So reading about something that could exist freaks me out.

The next big thing…I hope its not aliens. Angels seem to be on the rise, witchy stories are always good, not sure. Are you thinking of something??

So Molly, you find a speller who is selling spells for all types of things..beauty, love, wealth, all sorts of things. What do you buy a potion for?

    Hi Molly!
The thing I love most right now has to be Vampires, I’m not entirely sure why. It must be the lore, it just facinates me.
But the next big thing I think might be Angels.
There’s a few Angel books out there and people are loving them (:

My question would be “What is your favorite paranormal fiction?”
:D Sorry, copying your questions, but I just woke up, I’m still in bed actually (I got a MacBook yesterday and I am abusing the power to have it anywhere!) and my brain is not working.

The most unexplainable experience I’ve ever had was feeling something sit down on the bed beside me and stroke my hair. The funny thing was, I wasn’t really scared. It was comforting. Still weird though.

    I’m all about the vamps!

In my RSVP I said I hoped to make it and I did.
    1. It’s not a creepy experience. When I was 6 or 7, on Christmas Eve, my parents were wrapping gifts late at night. I was so excited about Christmas I was having trouble getting to sleep. Suddenly, I heard bells. The jingle bell type. i rushed to the window. I couldn’t see anything but those bells sounded for several minutes. And the sound was up in the sky. Not directly on top of my house, but moving around the neighborhood.
    2. My favorite is the shifters. Specially those that have more than one breed living together in “relative” peace.
    3. No idea about the next big thing.

    Happy Holidays

    1) I grew up near graveyards, so I imagined a number of creepy experiences… but honestly, those were actually just peaceful places, no real creepiness there. The creepiest experiences are actually from when I’ve been sleeping. I’ve had some whopping nightmares.

    2) I prefer paranormal fiction that tells about different kind of creatures and their interaction. If vampires are real (in a book), why not ghosts, too?

    3) I have no clue, but I hope to see a lot of fresh or refreshed ideas.

    2. I love Vampires, always have since I was a kid and watched Dark Shadows!!! Something about the dark sexy Vamps out there now that is just alluring.

    3. Not sure what the next big thing in paranormal would be but I’m thinking maybe they will start looking into Fae’s??? Not sure, though I have read about some really sexy Were’s, wouldn’t mind exploring them some more!!!

    1) When I was in high school, my sister and I heard footsteps come running down the hall toward us in the living room but no one was there! We were home alone stayed by each others sides till out mom got home. When we told her she didn’t believe us and said we had big imaginations, lol.
    2) I really love paranormal fiction that has vampire, weres, and psychics because each of these 3 have something I like. Vampires are generally sexy, weres usually have a lot of exciting drama going on, and psychics always draw everything together as the human that sees them all and is the connection between both worlds. I also really like faery myths and books based on them.
    3) Tough to say for sure; it’s likely it will be the opposite of whatever I write here today, lol. But…I’d say angels and/or faeries seem to be gaining ground.

btw Molly! I loved ur book and have bought it for my friend (she also loves paranormal fic) for Christmas. I thought it would be funny cuz we both work at the library, lol

Pamk- Sadly, alien lifeforms are one area of the paranormal that don’t really interest me. Sorry.

When I’m not avoiding antiquing (snerk) I’m usually writing. It’s what I do for fun and work. I also enjoy reading, and when I had spare time (another snerk) I used to do needlework/cross-stitch and make elaborate cakes for birthdays and baby showers. I did a few wedding cakes for friends before deciding it was way too much stress. There was an episode involving a deerrunning into the road while I was driving a cake to a wedding reception, braking too hard and losing the top tier of a cake. I’d rather not relive it.

Donna S. - I really like coming up with my own rules for my universe. I liked deciding that vampires could come into your house uninvited if they wanted to, but choose not to because that would be rude.

I’m not entirely comfortable with the “who would you like to meet question” because I’m afraid of coming off like a stalker. But, I will say that I spent all weekend wandering around New York on foot. We didn’t run in Hugh Jackman ONCE. But according to TMZ and People Magazine, Hugh just spends his time walking around the city streets constantly.

    I feel misled. That’s all I’m saying.

    3) The next big thing? Maybe hybrid paranormal creatures like Keri Arthur’s Riley Jenson or Jaye Wells’ Sabina Kane. You can pick and choose which features of two different paranormal creatures to make one great character.
I RSVP’d and participated in the Jill Myles event as well.

Thanks, Libby, and seriously, knowing my luck, I would be the Penelope Clearwater. You never see her, but bad things happen to her off-screen and only one obnoxious person cares

    Hey Aori,

    I’m glad you’re pleased!

I did come up with the titles, but I didn’t intend for people to think that Jane was going to permanently die. (Honestly, it didn’t occur to me people would think that.) I feel sort of bad that I’ve distressed readers. “Live Forever” is just another thing that Jane does that “Nice Girls” don’t do, according to her mother. (Have Fangs, Date Dead Men…) I wanted the title to imply that Jane has to get off her butt and live her life if she’s going to be happy and stop letting everybody else jerk her around.

And Jane doesn’t play dirty to keep Gabriel… but there is an incident with a Taser. That’s all I’m saying, ask me no more!

Becca, I know this will sound psycho, but I’m sort of thrilled that something I wrote made you cry. i can’t believe I affected someone like that!

And I’m working on it! I’m working on it!

And I really wish I were clever enough to have come up with Harry Potter’s wizarding world.

I find intuition “doesn’t work like that” for the lottery, as well. I liked the way X-Files made all answers possible to a basic detective story.

1)Watching Ghost Hunters find quick-moving shadows can be startling, but my own inherited abilities usually don’t scare me. There was that one time recently a woman was yelling right next to my ear when I was alone, then an unseen passed male relative did the same thing in his ear soon after. I didn’t tell him that had happened until he mentioned his experience. Between the dreams, deja vu, visions, sensing energy (like in a haunted location), sort of mind-reading/planting and a somewhat photographic memory, I usually creep other people out, except my relatives, since all my abilities are inherited. :) Thanks everyone for sharing!
    2) Vampires, so much history as an immortal, and I keep similar hours and skin tone. Some shifters because they are also people who have an amazing sense of smell. One of my fave books is “The Ghosts of Departure Point” and my fave comic is “Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose”, so I like almost everything.

    3) Steamounk vampires. Zombies are rising, too (though I prefer vampires).

Heading over to Jill’s after this. RSVPd for this one.

Thanks for being here, Molly! I am also known to cross-stitch and decorate cakes in my “spare time”. Yay BtVS and less gore. Haha red shirt comment.

Heather C-there is a strange hybrid in Tank Girl. :)

Rebecca M-find a good reader (I’ve had 2 done but usually read myself in a pinch, and others). Sometimes a friendly bit of advice or confirming what you already know can send you in the right direction. Ouija shouldn’t be “played” with. No sense in accidentally stirring things up. :)

Deborah Blake-hey fellow psychic witch. :)

Becca R-Nautibitz turned Spike and Buffy into rabbits once.

Paula H-I agree with nice graveyards and also have weird nightmares.

This was a lot of fun!

Does it figure that we “sensitives” read about the paranormal?

Oh I can’t wait to read the incident involving the taseer. Seriously Molly, I cannot wait for “Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever” to come out!

R.E.B. Have you read “Soulless” by Gail Carriger? It involves Vampires, werewolves, steampunk inventions and science, among other things

    1. I once had a young girl ghost sit down on a bed next to me in the middle of the night at a friends house. The house is almost 200 years old. I was not afraid of her at all - she just seemed curious as to who I was.

    2. Vampires and witches are my favorite - them seem the most romantic to me

    3. Fallen angels and steampunk are things I think we will see a lot more of in the next few years.

    1) I guess I’m a bit too rational kind of a person, for anything creepy, but sometimes, when I’m relaxed and not really thinking about anything, I think about something happening or someone saying something particular, and that thing happens or people say exactly what I’ve been thinking a moment ago. Maybe that’s just because I know them too well:)

    2) I prefer aliens, witches and shapeshifters; vampires and other creatures are OK too if they are the good guys, not some creepy monsters, as I’m not a horror fan. And I don’t really care for ghosts.

    3) I’d say something not yet thought about, or maybe some original reinvisioning of the concepts that have already been much written about.

    Now my questions for you:

have you ever worked your the experiences you’ve mentioned into your books?
And, if you could choose any power you’d like what would it be, and what would you do having it?

    Thanks!

    RSVPed for this

XD Hahahahh looking forward to the incident.
Pretty good titles. The title made me pick your Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs, and then I read the back and was pretty hooked.
Have you traveled outside of the US?

  98. Comment by Molly Harper — December 19, 2009 @ 4:27 pm

Dovile- Nope, I haven’t really had all that many experiences. The only thing I’ve ever worked into a story was this: Late one night, I got up to check on the baby and was walking back through the dark house and realized something was wrong. The porch light, which is normally enough to lead me through the living room, was off. I walked toward the porch door to flip the switch and felt this cold ripple of dread running up my spine, like there was something on the other side of the glass looking back at me from the darkened porch. I was seriously afraid of what I would see if I flipped the switch. I stood there with my hand over the switch for a minute before I could work up the nerve to turn the light on. Nothing was there. I laughed at myself and went back to bed.

So when I was writing a haunted house story, I included a similar incident, only there’s an extremely cranky ghost staring through the window.

I think I’d like to be a telekinetic… only without the horrible Carrie White consequences.

Aori, yes, I’ve traveled outside the US a little bit, to the Caribbean. I would really like to go to a bunch of different places: the English countryside, Italy, Ireland, Greece, Japan, Portugal. David and I hope to make an extended trip next year… somewhere.

    Hi Molly!
Thanks for coming here to chat with us! I haven’t read this book yet, but I can’t wait to find out what happens to Jane and Gabriel! I know I’m kinda late, so all of my questions have already been asked somehow. I just wanted to drop by and say hi.
By the way, you said “I’m probably a little abnormal.” I can’t remember who it was that said something like “none of us is normal”. :-)

Oh, I love this series! I finally checked it out of the library and now I’ve bought the second book (though not in a time frame to count for this contest or online) because they didn’t have the second yet!! Love the humor and the just greatness (and yes, it’s late tonight so I’m not brilliant ;))

Glad you stopped by and I’ll definitely look forward to reading that second book soon–and getting some friend to check out the series, too :)

(and as for 3 I’m hoping it will be shifters since I’ve only seen Buffy and werewolves and a few books cover the topic)

    1) Tell me about your creepiest, most logic-defying personal experience.

A cave in Ireland tried to eat me one time… :)

    2) What area of paranormal fiction do you prefer (vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, aliens) and why?

What, no fae? Scary fairies are the best — especially when they’re based on traditional folk and fairy-tales.

    3) What do you think the next “big thing” in paranormal fiction will be?

I’d love to see more multicultural urban fantasy. I’m really excited about Tu Publishing, which just had a successful fundraising campaign and will be launching its first two titles in 2010!

Molly, do you have experience as a children’s librarian like Jane? If not, what inspired you to give her that work experience?

    Molly! (squeal!)

I adore your works. Some of the funniest stuff I’ve read in years, and with vampires to boot. Keep up the good work… please!

1: I’ve not have much in the way of super natural contact. The creepiest was one in college, when I signed up for this “Shamanistic Mind opening” class. I didn’t think it would do anything, but for 5$, I figured why not?

Being a fan of para-normal fiction, you’d think I would know better.

The creepiest part for me when was when it worked. I met my spirit companion (A Moth, of all things. I never would have picked that consciously) and walked through my grandfather’s house. He had died before hand, and I hadn’t been to his house in years. Yet in this vision I could see details I had long forgotten, from the refridgerator to the old phone. It was both amazing and frightening.

    2. Vampires are my fav, but I also enjoy witches, succubi, demons, elves, and the occasional shifter story.

    3. I’ll go with demons. It can benefit from both the Twilight craze in theaters, Angels and demons, and the para-normal romance crowd.

Alana- No, I don’t have experience as a children’s librarian. I just spent a lot of time in libraries. When I worked as a newspaper reporter, I would take my lunch breaks in the library across the street and got to the know the staff pretty well.

What’s funny is there was a message posted at a Ky. librarians association web site to the effect of: “OK, which one of you wrote the Jane Jameson books anonymously? This woman knows too much about the library system not to be one of us.” It was incredibly flattering and made me feel great.
