Esther May Morrow’s Fruitless by Arthur Everest

Nick Bergman has had it with his employer who wishes him to fire four people on his staff for no good reason. When Nick refuses and is himself fired, he sets off for home, first receiving a text message from his girlfriend, Geri, asking him to please stop by Esther May Morrow’s shop to pick up a fruit bowl on his way home. Nick does so, and after his brother Dan comes to visit, they discover that there is something special about the new bowl, even magical: it produces whatever Nick wishes for. Of course, this circumstance leads to many interesting predicaments, and a particularly creepy and surprising one near the end of the story.

In each successive installment of the series, the author works with longer forms, giving him the opportunity to further develop ideas and themes. The first part is a story cycle of four pieces, the second a longer short story, and this third part is novella length. Everest’s style adapts well to each type. The novella length enables the author to add a bit more depth to character development.

The only character we do not learn much about in any of these segments of the series is Esther May Morrow herself. This situation is likely beside the point as the mystery surrounding Esther adds to the suspense of the stories. That said, it would be satisfying to find out more about Esther and her backstory, especially whenever Everest decides to end the series. A master of the art of surprise, Everest excels at catching the reader off-guard. The stories border on horror in some respects and will appeal to those readers as well as paranormal fiction fans.
