Esther May Morrow’s Lot 62 by Arthur Everest

****½

Retired MI6 agent Julie Blalock finds herself back in the game after a special request from the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Her mission: masquerade as a socialite to infiltrate an exclusive invitation-only auction being held by the mysterious Esther May Morrow. The item of particular interest to MOD is The Archangel, about which Julie receives no information other than it is Lot 62 in the auction.

This twisty story reads like a suspenseful spy story, yet turns into something else altogether. Readers, if they are anything like this reviewer, may think they have figured out what is going on and then find themselves taken completely by surprise. This aspect of the narrative, as well as the creepiness of the resolution, earn the author accolades.
