My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent

Posted under Book Reviews, Demons, Fae, Urban Fantasy, e-books by Virginia on Thursday 17 December 2009 at 2:46 pm
*****

Kaylee is your normal, every day, average teenager. She sneaks out to over 18 clubs with the help of her friends, she is interested in boys, and she has a job. She just has one problem: when someone near her is about to die, she loses complete control and starts screaming. When she almost loses complete control in front of one of the best looking guys in school, she will have to trust that he will not reveal her secret to the entire student body; however, he has a little secret of his own. The pair must work together to discover what is happening to the young girls in their school. Will they be able to protect those that they care about without everyone finding out Kaylee’s secret?

I have said many times in the past that I am not much of a YA person; however, when one of my favorite authors puts one out, I have to give it a try and see if it will draw me back into the YA genre. My Soul to Take has almost done that. I am tempted to check out other YA novels and see if they are as compelling as this one. I thought I loved Rachel Vincent’s Shifter series and did not think she could top Faythe as a character. I was wrong. Kaylee is not your typical teenager, and the story of her background is one I have yet to see used in all the urban fantasy/paranormal books I have read up until this point. I do not want to go too much into detail for fear of writing a spoiler review, but I was highly impressed at the storyline and the uniqueness of the characters. I must say, the sequel to My Soul to Take is one that I will probably be counting the days until its release, that is how anxious I am to read the next installment of this book. If you are a YA fan or if you are a teen who is looking for a great YA book, pick this one up at your local bookstore today.

Book Excerpt: She doesn’t see dead people, but…

She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who’ll be next…

I don’t know what a YA person is or shouls I say I don’t know what they mean by it, but I read the prequel - My Soul to Lose and can’t wait to get my hands on the other two books. I would love for Rachel to write a book telling me what Linda’s story is and what happened to her. Maybe someday her and Kaylee will come across each other again but not in the same place. Not saying any more as I don’t want to give anything away. I’m not sure if I’ve read Rachel’s shifter series but if not I’m going to have to find them and read them if they are as good as the book I just read.

      Belinda,

YA stands for Young Adult. YA books are geared towards teens and up. Many adults read them too.

I love that Rachel Vincent doesn’t write about vampires or werewolves or witches and wizards. I like all of those things, especially if they bring something new to the genre, but after a dozen books about repentant vampires (I’m starting to prefer the soulless and bloodthirsty kind) the story gets a bit old. It’s nice to read about something different, like giant cats or banshees. And Rachel is an awesome storyteller. I’m really excited for the next book in the Soul Screamers series.

Sounds awesome! The book was amazing and written wonderfully. Rachel makes this YA really interesting and the fact that YA’s are generally shorter than adult books, she manages to put all this great action and plot development into such a short amount of pages. It was fantastic!

I haven’t had the chance to get to this series yet, but was excited when I saw what it was about. Very soon though! And I hope people don’t automatically write things off because it’s listed as YA or Teen. Just because there listed under the category doesn’t mean it’s not good.

I’ve judged some YA books in the past and just finished reading the prequel. I was reading since I was 3 & never understood the YA concept. Childrens yes maybe even teen but for me YA simply means that the characters are young. You can still relate to them (see Harry Potter)because they say and do things you know you may have done, seen done or wanted to do. I feel agreat YA book is one where there are no barriers. A great read, is a great read. I will be getting My Soul to Take when I get paid this week. :-D
