My Soul to Save by Rachel Vincent

Posted under Book Reviews, Fae, Urban Fantasy, Young Adult by Virginia on Thursday 17 December 2009 at 2:40 pm
****½

Kaylee returns in the second installment of Ms. Vincent’s Soul Screamer series. In this book, Kaylee makes it her mission to save a local pop star’s soul from being stolen at a young age. She has to avoid her father finding out what she is doing because messing with the underworld as a young bean sidhe is dangerous and too many things could happen. But Kaylee has to get to the bottom of every mystery that is brought her way and she will try to right a wrong even if it is at the expense of her own life.

This is another series that is at the top of my eagerly anticipating the next book list. I love Rachel Vincent’s take on the bean sidhe fae. It is a compelling look into the dark world of death and how it could work. Kaylee has to learn to control her screaming when she sees the darkness come down over a human life but, fortunately, she has the help of her boyfriend, Nash, his reaper brother and his bean sidhe mother to guide her through the twists and turns of her heritage. However, they cannot keep her away from the perils of the underworld. For some reason, Kaylee is determined to blaze a path into the dark recesses of a world that she does not understand and is fraught with danger, which makes for an exciting book.

Rachel Vincent keeps the reader guessing as to what is around the next corner. Sometimes, it is expected, and other times, the unexpected happens. I enjoy being kept on my toes, waiting to see where the book is going to go next. Kaylee is an enchanting character in her naivety, and Nash, well, he does whatever he can to protect her and keep her out of too much trouble. This series does need to be read in order as My Soul to Save refers back to events that happened in the first book, so go out and buy the first book today. It is a great addition to any young adult library.

Book Excerpt: The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad’s ironclad curfew and putting her boyfriend’s loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls for a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can’t possibly understand. Kaylee can’t let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk….

Seems a bit deep for a YA but I bet I didn’t think like that when I was a young adult! Sounds like a series I really do want to read. Lisa D.

Sounds like Kaylee makes a lot of discoveries during the first book - and has a lot to learn and handle about herself in this one (only read the reviews, not the books yet!). YA has changed a lot since I was a teen *ahem*, but it is good to see another great addition to the genre.

Wow after reading both reviews for this series. I definitely need to check this one out. Sounds like a really different take on paranormals that will be a real winner. Great review.

Sounds exciting. I wonder what’s causing all these girls to die (like the book before, which I also haven’t read). A reaper and sidhe? Well, I’ve certainly watched/read things in that vein, so this fits right in.

OH. Now I just have to read this series. It sounds captivating, dark and shudder worthy. Judging by BBB reviews of Soul Screamer books, the series is as good as everyone is saying! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on this series — always good to know what BBB thinks of a book before I buy. Typically, if you guys like it, I like it :) Such a rare find - a review site that I concur with. That’s just precious and saves me so much money…and also costs me so much money. hehehe

I read the prequel “My Soul to Lose” and can’t wait to read this one as well as “My Soul to Take.” The prequel was a book I couldn’t put down, ok a computer screen I couldn’t stop reading but it’s the same concept. I loved it and I want to see what happens. I hope she keeps this series going.

Reviews are good, but I always try to read the back cover or synipsis first if it is a new author. If I like the author then I try and read everything they have ever written (i know it’s my anal retentive Virgo personality). I read the prequel and fell in love so I will be going out to bu these books. Plus what ever other books she has written. :-D
