Businesswoman, ex-librarian, vampire Jane Jameson is back for a third time in author Molly Harper’s Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever. Harper has given readers one of the funniest characters to grace the written page in Jane Jameson. The book starts with Jane leaving her 150-year-old boyfriend, Gabriel, in a hotel room in Brussels. Jane’s first vacation outside the United States has turned into a nightmare. Gabriel has paid little attention to her and been called away for business at every stop. She decides to head back home to Half Moon Hollow after a phone call from her best friend, Zeb, informing her of a break in at her store, Specialty Books.

The main plot is the relationship between Jane and her vampire boyfriend, Gabriel. Gabriel has been hiding things from Jane, and if he wants a future with her, he must come clean. Somebody is out to put an end to Jane and Gabriel, and it’s a mystery Jane must solve before someone close to her is hurt.

The newly-married Zeb and Jolene Lavelle are still struggling with issues caused from both their families. Jolene’s wants the couple to live with them and have been thwarting construction on their new home. Molly Harper has given the couple a wonderful story arc in the first three books. I was shocked when Dick Cheney and Andrea Byrne got together in the last book. They have some of the funniest scenes throughout book three, and have grown on me as a couple. All four of these people feel like they are a part of Jane’s extended family.

We are introduced to a couple new characters throughout the book. Emery Mueller, the nephew of Gilbert Wainwright, finally arrives into town. Jane shows kindness to Dick’s last living heir, but Emery finds ways to annoy everyone at Specialty Books. We also meet the Courtneys of Half Moon Hollow’s Chamber of Commerce. The two most prominently featured are Courtney Herndon also known as head Courtney and Courtney Barrow who is the only chamber member to takes a liking to Jane. Hijinks ensue when Jane is forced to work with her sister Jenny to obtain prizes for a charity event presented by the Chamber.

I hope we get many more tales of Jane Jameson and her friends in the future. This series has a wonderful mix of humor, romance, mystery, and small town flare. Molly Harper gives us characters that everybody can relate to even though they involve vampires and werewolves. Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever is the first must read of 2010.
