A Darker Trinity by Candice Gilmer

Wow. What does it take to create a thoroughly erotic novella with characters you can empathize with (most of the time) while at the same time enjoy a true depth in the world around them? Candice Gilmer apparently. Where the last story in the Moonlight and Shadows series introduced werewolves, mythicals, and the Templars, we now learn of vampires as this intriguing series continues. They have some unusual strengths (Neo anyone?) and I liked that we get more of an explanation on their strengths and weaknesses later in this story.

On the subject of vampires; What do you get when you mix one woman a little too concerned with what’s ‘proper’ and who is searching for something she has yet to find with two hottie vampires looking for the third that will complete them and then add in a dash of trouble as the past haunts the present? The journey of Nicole, James, and Joseph that’s what. As this story is written in third person, we get a taste of more then just one person’s view as we follow this sensual threesome.

I enjoyed the length of this story much more then the first in the series, it allowed the story to reach a good depth and let the emotions really grab the reader in a nice way, though I still found some of the character reluctance a bit tedious at times (in other words, though I can understand where Nicole was coming from, half the time I wanted to tell her to shut up and listen to her gut). And yikes, what a way to leave it. Candice Gilmer, if you don’t deliver, there will be a mob of angry readers at your doorstep.

On one last note, I am very happy Candice Gilmer expanded the Templar characters in this story. They intrigued me in Unholy Night and now I very much hope she writes their stories at some point because their characters are just too much fun to go to waste. Plus it would be rather sad if the whole Liam and Felicia dynamic that was introduced never went anywhere.
