Daydreams in Mermaid Grass by Natalie Williams
Taking a less-typical approach to writing about the paranormal, the author chooses to use poetry as her medium of exploration and illustration. While an intriguing idea, the execution has mixed results. To this reviewer, the poems in which the author does not attempt a structured rhyme scheme are the most pleasing, as this stricture sometimes results in simplistic word choice.
With evocative imagery and effective word selection, Williams deserves credit for approaching her topics in an unconventional manner. Expected to essentially say more with less, poetry is a daring choice to delve into a subject or express a feeling or an idea. Both intangible and mysterious, one could argue that the world of the paranormal is ideally suited to investigation through the use of a likewise elusive form.
Some stand-out pieces in the collection: “Daydreams in Mermaid Grass,” “Birdmaster,” “Nemesis,” “Lady in the Looking Glass,” “Quicksilver,” “Words of Cursing,” and Bracken Forest.” Readers who enjoy poetry may want to give this collection a chance.
