Dark Stranger by Susan Sizemore
Lieutenant Zoe Pappas believes ending the war benefits everyone – her people and the other aliens - and she works diligently in peaceful negotiations with the other alien nations. But a diplomatic job is very dangerous, especially for the heir to the Byzant Empire throne, since the Hajim did not want cooperation and alliance between humans and the other aliens. Yet her training and talent (she’s an empath) makes her the best person to handle the political duties. Sadly, this time around, the Hajim captures her when they attacked. Thankfully, they are not able to see through her disguise.
General Matthias “Doc” Raven leads the human POWs in underground Camp 5, which automatically fell to his lap as the highest ranking officer among them. Having telepathic talent, being the only doctor, and possessing very keen eyesight (he is a vampire, after all – a secret only a few know) make him the ideal leader. When Zoe and her group join them, he instinctively knows that she is trouble (he cannot penetrate her mind as easily as he could the others) and, at the same time, very useful to him thanks to her training.
From the very start, Doc and Zoe felt the attraction with each other. When he finally tastes her blood, he realizes that she is the one. However, a match between a vampire and the future empress is forbidden, and both of them hold their duties to the empire sacred. Thus, he is willing to sacrifice his life – literally since only her blood can sustain him – to protect her. When an unexpected threat to her life occurs, together they formulate a plan to escape, which may mean permanent separation for both of them.
Dark Stranger is a compelling novel. Despite its length, I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. Yes, it is one of those books that you cannot put down. Doc and Zoe also happen to be interesting and likable characters as well. They are both dedicated, selfless, and strong people. I guarantee the big fans of Ms. Sizemore’s Primes Vampires would love this new series. Enjoy reading!
